We show that the quantum Hamilton Jacobi approach to a class of quantum mechanical bound state problems and the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrix theory are equivalent. The Berry connection for both problems is identical to their quantum momentum function. The potential that appears in the joint probability distribution function in the random matrix theory is a super potential allowing us to apply it to exceptional polynomials.
We study the $S$-matrix interpretation of quantum theory in light of Categotical Quantum Mechanics. The $S$-matrix interpretation of quantum theory is shown to be a functorial semantics relating the algebras of quantum theory to the effective $S$-matrix formalism. Consequently, issues such as state reduction and entanglement generation can be depicted in a simple manner. Moreover, this categorical $S$-matrix interpretation does not have the alleged thermodynamic cost.
A new quantum mechanical notion -- Conditional Density Matrix -- is discussed and is applied to describe some physical processes. This notion is a natural generalization of von Neumann density matrix for such processes as divisions of quantum systems into subsystems and reunifications of subsystems into new joint systems. Conditional Density Matrix assigns a quantum state to a subsystem of a composite system under condition that another part of the composite system is in some pure state.
This is an introductory chapter of the book in progress on quantum foundations and incompleteness of quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics is represented as statistical mechanics of classical fields.
The quantum mechanical probability densities are compared with the probability densities treated by the theory of random variables. The relevance of their difference for the interpretation of quantum mechanics is commented.
This paper is concerned with the connection between density matrix method, supersymmetric quantum mechanics and Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory. It is shown that these three formulations share the common mathematical structure: specifically, all of them have the invariant operators which satisfies the Liouville-Von Neumann equation and the solutions to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and/or Schrödinger eigenvalue equation can be constructed in terms of the eigenstates of the invariants.
Here are a few random thoughts on the interpretations of the quantum double slit experiment, the Mach Zehnder experiment, the delayed-choice experiment and the measurement problem.
We propose a model CCS (complex-conjugate-space) to understand the inner and outer product nature of wave functions in non-hermitian PT-symmetry model in quantum mechanics considering (NxN) matrix model. Further we reflect the correct nature of C-symmetry ,P-parity and original Hamiltonian matrix for any arbitrary values of N. Interestingly the present result on N=2 , remains the same reported earlier by Bender,Brody and Jones model PT-symmetry operator. In non-conventional way one can notice that wave functions in a PT-symmetry model satisfies similar relations as in hermitian operator .
The tomographic invertable map of the Wigner function onto the positive probability distribution function is studied. Alternatives to the Schrödinger evolution equation and to the energy level equation written for the positive probability distribution are discussed. Instead of the transition probability amplitude (Feynman path integral) a transition probability is introduced. A new formulation of the conventional quantum mechanics (without wave function and density matrix) based on the ``probability representation'' of quantum states is given. An equation for the propagator in the new formulat…
For a specific exactly solvable 2 by 2 matrix model with a PT-symmetric Hamiltonian possessing a real spectrum, we construct all the eligible physical metrics and show that none of them admits a factorization CP in terms of an involutive charge operator C. Alternative ways of restricting the physical metric to a unique form are briefly discussed.
It is argued that the quantum correlations are not maximally nonlocal to make it possible to control local outcomes from outside spacetime, and quantum mechanics emerges from timeless nonlocality and biased local randomness. This rules out a world described by NL (nonlocal) boxes. A new type of experiments is suggested.
Stochastic realization of the wave function in quantum mechanics, with the inclusion of soliton representation of extended particles, is discussed. The concept of Stochastic Qubits is used for quantum computing modeling.
It is well known that density matrices can be used in quantum mechanics to represent the information available to an observer about either a system with a random wave function (``statistical mixture'') or a system that is entangled with another system (``reduced density matrix''). We point out another role, previously unnoticed in the literature, that a density matrix can play: it can be the ``conditional density matrix,'' conditional on the configuration of the environment. A precise definition can be given in the context of Bohmian mechanics, whereas orthodox quantum mechanics is too vague t…
We account for the origin of the laws of quantum probabilities in the de Broglie-Bohm (pilot wave) formulation of quantum theory by considering the property of ergodicity likely to characterise the dynamics of microscopic quantum systems.
The problem of quantum harmonic oscillator with "regular+random" square frequency, subjected to "regular+random external force, is considered in framework of representation of the wave function by complex-valued random process. Average transition probabilities are calculated. Stochastic density matrix method is developed, which is used for investigation of thermodinamical characteristics of the system, such as entropy and average energy.
The characterization of quantum correlations, being stronger than classical, yet weaker than those appearing in non-signaling models, still poses many riddles. In this work we show that the extent of binary correlations in a general class of nonlocal theories can be characterized by the~existence of a certain covariance matrix. The set of quantum realizable two-point correlators in the~bipartite case then arises from a subtle restriction on the structure of this general covariance matrix. We also identify a class of theories whose covariance does not have neither a quantum nor an "almost quant…
We propose a generalization of cubic matrix mechanics by introducing a canonical triplet and study its relation to Nambu mechanics. The generalized cubic matrix mechanics we consider can be interpreted as a 'quantum' generalization of Nambu mechanics.
We clarify different definitions of the density matrix by proposing the use of different names, the full density matrix for a single-closed quantum system, the compressed density matrix for the averaged single molecule state from an ensemble of molecules, and the reduced density matrix for a part of an entangled quantum system, respectively. We show that ensembles with the same compressed density matrix can be physically distinguished by observing fluctuations of various observables. This is in contrast to a general belief that ensembles with the same compressed density matrix are identical. E…
A long sequence of tosses of a classical coin produces an apparently random bit string, but classical randomness is an illusion: the algorithmic information content of a classically-generated bit string lies almost entirely in the description of initial conditions. This letter presents a simple argument that, by contrast, a sequence of bits produced by tossing a quantum coin is, almost certainly, genuinely (algorithmically) random. This result can be interpreted as a strengthening of Bell's no-hidden-variables theorem, and relies on causality and quantum entanglement in a manner similar to Bel…
The objective of this series of three papers is to axiomatically derive quantum mechanics from classical mechanics and two other basic axioms. In this first paper, Schreodinger's equation for the density matrix is fist obtained and from it Schroedinger's equation for the wave functions is derived. The momentum and position operators acting upon the density matrix are defined and it is then demonstrated that they commute. Pauli's equation for the density matrix is also obtained. A statistical potential formally identical to the quantum potential of Bohm's hidden variable theory is introduced, a…
In the first paper of this series, I introduced a non-linear, Hamiltonian, generalization of Schroedinger's theory that blocks formation of macroscopic dispersion ("cats"). But that theory was entirely deterministic, and so the origin of random outcomes in experiments such as Stern-Gerlach or EPRB was left open. Here I propose that Schroedinger's wavefunction has a random component and demonstrate that such an improvised stochastic theory can violate Bell's inequality. Repeated measurements and the back-reaction on the microsystem are discussed in a toy example. Experiments that might falsify …
In principle, non-Hermitian quantum equations of motion can be formulated using as a starting point either the Heisenberg's or the Schrödinger's picture of quantum dynamics. Here it is shown in both cases how to map the algebra of commutators, defining the time evolution in terms of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, onto a non-Hamiltonian algebra with a Hermitian Hamiltonian. The logic behind such a derivation is reversible, so that any Hermitian Hamiltonian can be used in the formulation of non-Hermitian dynamics through a suitable algebra of generalized (non-Hamiltonian) commutators. These result…
In this paper, we give random matrix theory approach to the quantum mechanics using the quantum Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. We show that the bound state problems in quantum mechanics are analogous to solving Gaussian unitary ensemble of random matrix theory. This study helps in identify the potential appear in the joint probability distribution function in the random matrix theory as a super potential. This approach allows to extend the random matrix theory to the newly discovered exceptional polynomials.
We formulate the mapping between a large class of nonlinear wave equations and flow equations for barotropic fluid with internal surface tension and capillary effects. Motivated by statistical mechanics and multi-channel physics arguments, we focus on wave equations with logarithmic nonlinearity, and further generalize them to matrix equations. We map the resulting equation to flow equations of multi-channel or multi-component Korteweg-type materials. For some special cases, we analytically derive Gaussian-type matrix solutions and study them in the context of fluid mechanics.
We propose a generalization of Heisenbergs' matrix mechanics based on many-index objects. It is shown that there exists a solution describing a harmonic oscillator and many-index objects lead to a generalization of spin algebra.
Matrix mechanics is developed to describe the bound state spectra in few- and many-electron atoms, ions and molecules. Our method is based on the matrix factorization of many-electron (or many-particle) Coulomb Hamiltonians which are written in hyperspherical coordinates. As follows from the results of our study the bound state spectra of many-electron (or many-particle) Coulomb Hamiltonians always have the `ladder' structure and this fundamental fact can be used to determine and investigate the bound states in various few- and many-body Coulomb systems.
The many-body space fractional quantum system is studied using the density matrix method. We give the new results of the Thomas-Fermi model, and obtain the quantum pressure of the free electron gas. We also show the validity of the Hohenberg-Kohn theory in the space fractional quantum mechanics and generalize the density functional theory to the fractional quantum mechanics.
We formulate N-fold supersymmetry in quantum mechanical matrix models. As an example, we construct general two-by-two Hermitian matrix 2-fold supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems. We find that there are two inequivalent such systems, both of which are characterized by two arbitrary scalar functions, and one of which does not reduce to the scalar system. The obtained systems are all weakly quasi-solvable.
An alternative method is proposed for deriving the time dependent Schroedinger equation from the pictures of wave and matrix mechanics. The derivation is of a mixed classical quantum character, since time is treated as a classical variable, thus avoiding any controversy over its meaning in quantum mechanics. The derivation method proposed in this paper requires no ad hoc assumption and avoids going through a second-order differential equation that can be reduced to the well known time-dependent Schroedinger equation only postulating a complex wavefunction with an exponential time dependence, a…
The Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics assumes the existence of the classical deterministic Newtonian world. We argue that in fact the Newton determinism in classical world does not hold and in classical mechanics there is fundamental and irreducible randomness. The classical Newtonian trajectory does not have a direct physical meaning since arbitrary real numbers are not observable. There are classical uncertainty relations, i.e. the uncertainty (errors of observation) in the determination of coordinate and momentum is always positive (non zero). A "functional" formulation of clas…
The analytic structure of the S-matrix of singular quantum mechanics is examined within a multichannel framework, with primary focus on its dependence with respect to a parameter ($Ω$) that determines the boundary conditions. Specifically, a characterization is given in terms of salient mathematical and physical properties governing its behavior. These properties involve unitarity and associated current-conserving Wronskian relations, time-reversal invariance, and Blaschke factorization. The approach leads to an interpretation of effective nonunitary solutions in singular quantum mechanics and…
The notion of probability plays a crucial role in quantum mechanics. It appears in quantum mechanics as the Born rule. In modern mathematics which describes quantum mechanics, however, probability theory means nothing other than measure theory, and therefore any operational characterization of the notion of probability is still missing in quantum mechanics. In this paper, based on the toolkit of algorithmic randomness, we present a refinement of the Born rule, as an alternative rule to it, for specifying the property of the results of quantum measurements in an operational way. Algorithmic ran…

The probability operator is derived from first principles for an equilibrium quantum system. It is also shown that the superposition states collapse into a mixture of states giving the conventional von Neumann trace form for the quantum average. The mechanism for the collapse is found to be quite general: it results from the conservation law for a conserved, exchangeable variable (such as energy) and the entanglement of the total system wave function that necessarily follows. The relevance of the present results to the einselection mechanism for decoherence, to the quantum measurement problem,…
The aim of the famous Born and Jordan 1925 paper was to put Heisenberg's matrix mechanics on a firm mathematical basis. Born and Jordan showed that if one wants to ensure energy conservation in Heisenberg's theory it is necessary and sufficient to quantize observables following a certain ordering rule. One apparently unnoticed consequence of this fact is that Schrödinger's wave mechanics cannot be equivalent to Heisenberg's more physically motivated matrix mechanics unless its observables are quantized using this rule, and not the more symmetric prescription proposed by Weyl in 1926, which has…
In this paper, we explore the possibility of building a quantum memory that is robust to thermal noise using large $N$ matrix quantum mechanics models. First, we investigate the gauged $SU(N)$ matrix harmonic oscillator and different ways to encode quantum information in it. By calculating the mutual information between the system and a reference which purifies the encoded information, we identify a transition temperature, $T_c$, below which the encoded quantum information is protected from thermal noise for a memory time scaling as $N^2$. Conversely, for temperatures higher than $T_c$, the in…
Random quantum circuits are proficient information scramblers and efficient generators of randomness, rapidly approximating moments of the unitary group. We study the convergence of local random quantum circuits to unitary $k$-designs. Employing a statistical mechanical mapping, we give an exact expression of the distance to forming an approximate design as a lattice partition function. In the statistical mechanics model, the approach to randomness has a simple interpretation in terms of domain walls extending through the circuit. We analytically compute the second moment, showing that random …
We consider the classical dynamics of bosonic and fermionic matrix variables in complex Hilbert space, defined by a trace action, assuming cyclic invariance under the trace and the presence of a global unitary invariance. With plausible and explicitly stated assumptions, including the existence of a large hierarchy of scale between the underlying dynamics and observed physics, we show that (1) the equilibrium statistical mechanics of this matrix dynamics, in the canonical ensemble, gives rise to an emergent quantum mechanics for many degrees of freedom, including the standard canonical commuta…
Recently developed methods for PT-symmetric models are applied to quantum-mechanical matrix models. We consider in detail the case of potentials of the form $V=-(g/N^{p/2-1})Tr(iM)^{p}$ and show how the calculation of all singlet wave functions can be reduced to solving a one-dimensional PT-symmetric model. The large-N limit of this class of models exists, and properties of the lowest-lying singlet state can be computed using WKB. For $p=3,4$, the energy of this state for small values of $N$ appears to show rapid convergence to the large-N limit. For the special case of $p=4$, we extend recent…
We describe the implications of permutation symmetry for the state space and dynamics of quantum mechanical systems of matrices of general size $N$. We solve the general 11- parameter permutation invariant quantum matrix harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian and calculate the canonical partition function. The permutation invariant sector of the Hilbert space, for general Hamiltonians, can be described using partition algebra diagrams forming the bases of a tower of partition algebras $P_k(N)$. The integer $k$ is interpreted as the degree of matrix oscillator polynomials in the quantum mechanics. Fam…
Despite the seminal connection between classical multiply-periodic motion and Heisenberg matrix mechanics and the massive amount of work done on the associated problem of semiclassical (EBK) quantization of bound states, we show that there are, nevertheless, a number of previously unexploited aspects of this relationship that bear on the quantum-classical correspondence. In particular, we emphasize a quantum variational principle that implies the classical variational principle for invariant tori. We also expose the more indirect connection between commutation relations and quantization of act…
We describe a numerical method which allows us to go beyond the classical approximation for the real-time dynamics of many-body systems by approximating the many-body Wigner function by the most general Gaussian function with time-dependent mean and dispersion. On a simple example of a classically chaotic system with two degrees of freedom we demonstrate that this Gaussian state approximation is accurate for significantly smaller field strengths and longer times than the classical one. Applying this approximation to matrix quantum mechanics, we demonstrate that the quantum Lyapunov exponents a…
Pseudo-random number generators are widely used in many branches of science, mainly in applications related to Monte Carlo methods, although they are deterministic in design and, therefore, unsuitable for tackling fundamental problems in security and cryptography. The natural laws of the microscopic realm provide a fairly simple method to generate non-deterministic sequences of random numbers, based on measurements of quantum states. In practice, however, the experimental devices on which quantum random number generators are based are often unable to pass some tests of randomness. In this revi…
We show how two-point correlation functions derived within non-isotropic random wave models are in fact quantum results that are obtained in the appropriate limit in terms of the exact Green function of the quantum system. Since no statistical model is required for this derivation, this shows that taking the wave functions as Gaussian processes is the only assumption of those random wave models. We also show how for clean systems the two-point correlation function defined through an energy average defines a Gaussian theory which substantially reduces the spurious contributions coming from the …
I argue that Bohmian mechanics (or any similar pilot-wave theory) cannot reasonably be claimed to be a deterministic theory. If one assumes the "quantum equilibrium distribution" provided by the wave function of the universe, Bohmian mechanics requires an external random oracle in order to describe the (Kolmogorov-Levin-Chaitin) algorithmic randomness properties of typical outcome sequences of long runs of repeated identical experiments (which provably follow from the Born rule). This oracle lies beyond the scope of Bohmian mechanics (or any deterministic extension thereof), including the impo…
