We consider Berezin-Toeplitz operators whose multipliers are compactly supported densities carried by a submanifold of ${\mathbb C}^N$ . We compute asymptotically the moments of their spectral measures, and we prove Szegö limit theorems in cases when the submanifold is isotropic or co-isotropic, from which Weyl estimates follow. We also obtain asymptotics of the Schatten norms of such operators. Rescaled versions of these operators can be thought of as quantum mechanical mixed states, and our results give the semi-classical limit of their entropy.
We compute the limiting statistical distribution of the eigenvalues of sequences of matrices whose entries satisfy what we call a vanishing mean variation condition and are $μ$-distributed for some probability measure. As an application of our results, we extend the well-known class of Kac-Murdock-Szegő generalized Toeplitz matrices to sequences of matrices whose diagonal entries are modeled by Riemann integrable functions.
We discuss an analogue of the First Szegő Limit Theorem for multiplicative Toeplitz operators and highlight the role of the multliplicative Følner condition in this topic.
Szegő's First Limit Theorem provides the limiting statistical distribution (LSD) of the eigenvalues of large Toeplitz matrices. Szegő's Second (or Strong) Limit Theorem for Toeplitz matrices gives a second order correction to the First Limit Theorem, and allows one to calculate asymptotics for the determinants of large Toeplitz matrices. In this paper we survey results extending the first and strong limit theorems to Kac-Murdock-Szegő (KMS) matrices. These are matrices whose entries along the diagonals are not necessarily constants, but modeled by functions. We clarify and extend some existing…
A Szegö-type theorem for Toeplitz operators was proved by Boutet de Monvel and Guillemin for general Toeplitz structures. We give a local version of this result in the setting of positive line bundles on compact symplectic manifolds.
We study the asymptotic behavior, as $n\to\infty$, of ratios of Toeplitz determinants $D_n(e^h dμ)/D_n(dμ)$ defined by a measure $μ$ on the unit circle and a sufficiently smooth function $h$. The approach we follow is based on the theory of orthogonal polynomials. We prove that the second order asymptotics depends on $h$ and only a few Verblunsky coefficients associated to $μ$. As a result, we establish a relative version of the Strong Szegő Limit Theorem for a wide class of measures $μ$ with essential support on a single arc. In particular, this allows the measure to have a singular component…
In this paper, we construct a family of Berezin-Toeplitz type quantizations of a compact symplectic manifold. For this, we choose a Riemannian metric on the manifold such that the associated Bochner Laplacian has the same local model at each point (this is slightly more general than in almost-Kähler quantization). Then the spectrum of the Bochner Laplacian on high tensor powers $L^p$ of the prequantum line bundle $L$ asymptotically splits into clusters of size ${\mathcal O}(p^{3/4})$ around the points $pΛ$, where $Λ$ is an eigenvalue of the model operator (which can be naturally called a Landa…
We consider Berezin-Toeplitz operators on compact Kahler manifolds whose symbols are characteristic functions. When the support of the characteristic function has a smooth boundary, we prove a two-term Weyl law, the second term being proportional to the Riemannian volume of the boundary. As a consequence, we deduce the area law for the entanglement entropy of integer quantum Hall states. Another application is for the determinantal processes with correlation kernel the Bergman kernels of a positive line bundle : we prove that the number of points in a smooth domain is asymptotically normal.
We introduce a minimalistic notion of semiclassical quantization and use it to prove that the convex hull of the semiclassical spectrum of a quantum system given by a collection of commuting operators converges to the convex hull of the spectrum of the associated classical system. This gives a quick alternative solution to the isospectrality problem for quantum toric systems. If the operators are uniformly bounded, the convergence is uniform. Analogous results hold for non-commuting operators.
This article concerns the asymptotics of pseudodifferential operators whose Weyl symbol is the convolution of a discontinuous function dilated by a large scaling parameter with a smooth function of constant scale. These operators include as a special case generalised anti-Wick operators, also known as Gabor-Toeplitz operators, with smooth windows and dilated discontinuous symbol. The main result is a two-term Szegő theorem, that is, the asymptotics of the trace of a function of the operator. A special case of this is the asymptotic terms of the eigenvalue counting function. In both cases, prev…
This paper is devoted to the use of half-form bundles in the symbolic calculus of Berezin-Toeplitz operators on Kahler manifolds. We state the Bohr-Sommerfeld conditions and relate them to the functional calculus of Toeplitz operators, a trace formula and the characteristic classes in deformation quantization. We also develop the symbolic calculus of Lagrangian sections, with the crucial estimate of the subprincipal terms.
A Weyl law for Toeplitz operators was proved by Boutet de Monvel and Guillemin for general Toeplitz structures. In the setting of positive line bundles, we revisit this theme in light of local asymptotic techniques based on the microlocal theory of the Szego kernel. By pairing this approach with classical arguments used to estimate the spectral function of a pseudodifferential operator, we first establish a local Weyl law (that is, a pointwise estimate on the spectral function of the Toeplitz operator).
A trace formula for Toeplitz operators was proved by Boutet de Monvel and Guillemin in the setting of general Toeplitz structures. Here we give a local version of this result for a class of Toeplitz operators related to continuous groups of symmetries on quantizable compact symplectic manifolds. The local trace formula involves certain scaling asymptotics along the clean fixed locus of the Hamiltonian flow of the symbol, reminiscent of the scaling asymptotics of the equivariant components of the Szegö kernel along the diagonal.
In this paper the authors show how to use Riemann-Hilbert techniques to prove various results, some old, some new, in the theory of Toeplitz operators and orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC's). There are four main results: the first concerns the approximation of the inverse of a Toeplitz operator by the inverses of its finite truncations. The second concerns a new proof of the `hard' part of Baxter's theorem, and the third concerns the Born approximation for a scattering problem on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}_+$. The fourth and final result concerns a basic proposition of Golinskii-Ib…
In the 1980s, Helffer and Sjöstrand examined in a series of articles the concentration of the ground state of a Schrödinger operator in the semiclassical limit. In a similar spirit, and using the asymptotics for the Szegö kernel, we show a theorem about the localization properties of the ground state of a Toeplitz operator, when the minimal set of the symbol is a finite set of non-degenerate critical points. Under the same condition on the symbol, for any integer K we describe the first K eigenvalues of the operator.
We discuss the Berezin transform, a Markov operator associated to positive operator valued measures (POVMs), in a number of contexts including the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization, Donaldson's dynamical system on the space of Hermitian products on a complex vector space, representations of finite groups, and quantum noise. In particular, we calculate the spectral gap for quantization in terms of the fundamental tone of the phase space. Our results confirm a prediction of Donaldson for the spectrum of the Q-operator on Kahler manifolds with constant scalar curvature. Furthermore, viewing POVMs as …
This paper is a follow-up to a recent article about the essential spectrum of Toeplitz operators acting on the Bergman space over the unit ball. As mentioned in the said article, some of the arguments can be carried over to the case of bounded symmetric domains and some cannot. The aim of this paper is to close the gaps to obtain comparable results for general bounded symmetric domains. In particular, we show that a Toeplitz operator on the Bergman space $A^p_ν$ is Fredholm if and only if all of its limit operators are invertible. Even more generally, we show that this is in fact true for all …
We provide asymptotic formulas for the Bergman projector and Berezin-Toeplitz operators on a compact K{ä}hler manifold. These objects depend on an integer N and we study, in the limit N $\rightarrow$ +$\infty$, situations in which one can control them up to an error O(e^{-cN}) for some c > 0. We develop a calculus of Toeplitz operators with real-analytic symbols, which applies to K{ä}hler man-ifolds with real-analytic metrics. In particular, we prove that the Bergman kernel is controlled up to O(e^{-cN}) on any real-analytic K{ä}hler manifold as N $\rightarrow$ +$\infty$. We also prove that To…
In recent years, the Tian-Zelditch asymptotic expansion for the equivariant components of the Szegö kernel of a polarized complex projective manifold, and its subsequent generalizations in terms of scaling limits, have played an important role in algebraic, symplectic, and differential geometry. A natural question is whether there exist generalizations in which the projector onto the spaces of holomorphic sections can be replaced by the projector onto more general (non-complete) linear series. One case that lends itself to such analysis, and which is natural from the point of view of geometric…
