A tentative excess in the electron spectrum at 1.4 TeV was recently reported by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). A non-astrophysical scenario in which dark matter particles annihilate or decay in a local clump has been invoked to explain the excess. If $e^\pm$ annihilation channels in the final states are mediated by left-handed leptons as a component in the $SU(2)_L$ doublet, neutrinos with similar energies should have been simultaneously produced. We demonstrate that generic dark matter models can be decisively tested by the existing IceCube data. In case of a non-detection, such models would be excluded at the $5σ$ level by the five-year data for a point-like source and by the ten-year data for an extended source of dark matter particles with left-handed leptons.
We search for a spatial association between the CHIME FRBs and IceCube neutrinos detected in the TeV energy range, by counting the total number of neutrino-FRB pairs with angular separations of $< 3 $ degrees, as well as within the observed neutrino error circle. This number constitutes the total signal events, which is then compared to the total background, corresponding to the null hypothesis of no spatial association. The background was obtained from the total neutrino-FRB matches in off-source angular windows with the same solid angle as the signal window. We do not find any statistically …
The tentative 1.4 TeV excess in the $e^+e^-$ spectrum measured by The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) motivates the possible existence of one or more local dark matter concentrated regions. In particular, Ultra-compact Micro Halos (UCMHs) seeded by large density perturbations in the early universe, allocated within ~0.3 kpc from the solar system, could provide the potential source of electrons and positrons produced from dark matter annihilation, enough to explain the DAMPE signal. Here we consider a UCMH with density profile assuming radial in-fall and explore the preferred halo paramet…
A recent proposal to associate 60~TeV to 2~PeV IceCube neutrino events with gamma-ray bursts~(GRBs) indicates the Lorentz violation of cosmic neutrinos and leads further to the $CPT$ symmetry violation between neutrinos and antineutrinos. Here we find that another 12 northern hemisphere track events possibly correlated with GRBs from three-year IceCube data satisfy the same regularity at a lower energy scale around 1~TeV. The combined fitting indicates a Lorentz violation scale ${E}_{\rm LV}=(6.4\pm 1.5)\times10^{17}~{ \rm GeV}$ and an intrinsic time difference ${Δ{t}_{\rm in}=(-2.8\pm 0.7)\ti…
Neutrinos are key to probing the deep structure of matter and the high-energy Universe. Yet, until recently, their interactions had only been measured at laboratory energies up to about 350 GeV. An opportunity to measure their interactions at higher energies opened up with the detection of high-energy neutrinos in IceCube, partially of astrophysical origin. Scattering off matter inside the Earth affects the distribution of their arrival directions --- from this, we extract the neutrino-nucleon cross section at energies from 18 TeV to 2 PeV, in four energy bins, in spite of uncertainties in the…
The recent IceCube publication claims the observation of cosmic neutrinos with energies down to $\sim 10$ TeV, reinforcing the growing evidence that the neutrino flux in the 10-100 TeV range is unexpectedly large. Any conceivable source of these neutrinos must also produce a $γ$-ray flux which degrades in energy en route to the Earth and contributes to the extragalactic $γ$-ray background measured by the Fermi satellite. In a quantitative multimessenger analysis, featuring minimalistic assumptions, we find a $\geq 3σ$ tension in the data, reaching $\sim 5σ$ for cosmic neutrinos extended down t…
Recent observations of GeV gamma-rays from novae have led to a paradigm shift in the understanding of these objects. While it is now believed that shocks contribute significantly to the energy budget of novae, it is still unknown if the emission is hadronic or leptonic in origin. Neutrinos could hold the key to definitively differentiating between these two scenarios, though the energies of such particles would be much lower than are typically targeted with neutrino telescopes. IceCube's densely instrumented DeepCore sub-array provides the ability to reduce the threshold for observation from 1…
The IceCube Neutrino Detector observes tens of thousands of atmospheric neutrinos every year with its low energy extension DeepCore, covering the neutrino energy range from GeV to TeV. These neutrinos can be used to study particle interactions in conditions that are inaccessible to current accelerator-based experiments. Here, we present constraints concerning the production of light and strange mesons in atmospheric particle cascades using a dedicated analysis based on the shape of the neutrino spectrum in zenith and energy. We report the first measurement of the atmospheric K/Pi-ratio in a co…
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole can provide unique tests of muon production models in extensive air showers by measuring both the low-energy (GeV) and high-energy (TeV) muon components. We present here a measurement of the TeV muon content in near-vertical air showers detected with IceTop in coincidence with IceCube. The primary cosmic-ray energy is estimated from the dominant electromagnetic component of the air shower observed at the surface. The high-energy muon content of the shower is studied based on the energy losses measured in the deep detector. Using a neural netwo…
We report on the search of astrophysical gamma rays with energies in the 100 TeV to several PeV range arriving in directional and temporal coincidence with public alerts from HAWC (TeV gamma rays) and IceCube (neutrinos above ~100 TeV). The observations have been performed with the Carpet-2 air-shower detector at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory, working in the "photon-friendly" mode since 2018. Photon candidate showers are selected by their low muon content. No significant excess of the photon candidates have been observed, and upper limits on gamma-ray fluences associated with the alerts are …
IceCube detects neutrinos at energies orders of magnitude higher than any neutrinos produced at particle accelerators. Neutrinos are weakly interacting particles but at energies above 30 TeV the Earth becomes opaque to neutrinos. The neutrino cross section is well predicted in the Standard Model. Any unexpected increase in the cross-section could be a sign of beyond the standard model physics. In this analysis IceCube's through-going muon neutrino flux is used to fit for the cross section of neutrino interaction, the through-going high energy neutrinos will be absorbed as they travel through t…
The first ever identification of a cosmic ray accelerator as the consequence of spacial and temporal correlation of IceCube event 170922A with flaring of a blazar TXS 0506+056 motivated us to look for other flaring blazars in Fermi-LAT 3FGL catalog, which could be correlated with IceCube high energy track events. We have studied the Fermi-LAT light curves of blazars correlated with neutrino track events. Among the eight sources identified within 2$σ$ angular uncertainty of the IceCube track events selected in our study, we find only one source 3FGL J2255+2409 was in flaring state during the ne…
Archival Search for IceCube Sub-TeV Neutrino Counterparts to Sub-Threshold Gravitational Wave Events from the Third Observing Run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA
Although IceCube has discovered a diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux, the underlying sources of these neutrinos remain unknown. Transient astrophysical objects, such as fast radio bursts (FRBs), could explain a large percentage of the measured flux. We present the analysis techniques of IceCube searches for MeV to TeV neutrinos from FRBs. As no significant correlation between IceCube neutrinos and FRBs has been found, we present the first limit on MeV neutrino emission from FRBs and the most constraining limits for neutrinos with GeV to TeV energies. We also describe the prospects for future …
Whether studying neutrinos for their own sake or as a messenger particle, neutrino cross sections are critically important for numerous analyses. On the low energy side, measurements from accelerator experiments reach up to a few 100s of GeV. On the high energy side, neutrino-earth absorption measurements extend down to a few TeV. The intermediate energy range has yet to be measured experimentally. This work is made possible by the linear relationship between the event rate and cross section, and will utilize IceCube muon neutrino data collected between 2010 and 2018. An advanced energy recons…
We present a novel analysis method for the determination of the neutrino-nucleon Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) cross section in the TeV - PeV energy range utilizing neutrino absorption by the Earth. We analyze five years of data collected with the complete IceCube detector from May 2011 to May 2016. This analysis focuses on electromagnetic and hadronic showers (cascades) mainly induced by electron and tau neutrinos. The applied event selection features high background rejection (< 10% background contamination below 60 TeV, background free above 60 TeV) of atmospheric muons and high signal ef…
The IceCube Collaboration has published four years of data and the observed neutrino flux is significantly in excess of the expected atmospheric background. Due to the steeply falling atmospheric background spectrum, events at the highest energies are most likely extraterrestrial. In our previous approach we have studied blazars as the possible origin of the High-Energy Starting Events (HESE) neutrino events at PeV energies. In this work we extend our study to include all HESE neutrinos (which does not include IC 170922A) at or above a reconstructed energy of 100 TeV, but below 1 PeV. We study…
Gamma-ray Astronomy with Muons: Sensitivity of IceCube to PeVatrons in the Southern Sky
Although they are best known for studying astrophysical neutrinos, neutrino telescopes like IceCube can study neutrino interactions, at energies far above those that are accessible at accelerators. In this writeup, I present two IceCube analyses of neutrino interactions at energies far above 1 TeV. The first measures neutrino absorption in the Earth, and, from that determines the neutrino-nucleon cross-section at energies between 6.3 and 980 TeV. We find that the cross-sections is 1.30 $^{+0.21}_{-0.19}$ (stat.) $^{+0.39}_{-0.43}$ (syst.) times the Standard Model cross-section. We also present…
The era of multimessenger astrophysics has arrived with the simultaneous operation of large cosmic-ray, gamma-ray, neutrino, and gravitational-wave observatories. In just the past two years, an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart was detected for a gravitational wave event, and evidence for an EM counterpart of high energy neutrinos has been identified. These measurements have had a major impact on our view of the non-thermal universe, but understanding cosmic accelerators require a substantial increase in the number of multimessenger observations. The Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Net…
I study the possibility of directly detecting Ultra-high energy (UHE from now on) WIMPs by the IceCube experiment, via the WIMPs interaction with the nuclei in the ice. I evaluate galactic and extragalactic UHE WIMP and astrophysical and atmospheric neutrino event rates at energy range of 10 TeV - 10 PeV. I assume UHE WIMPs $χ$ are only from the decay of superheavy dark matter $ϕ$, that is $ϕ\toχ\barχ$. If the lifetime of superheavy dark matter $τ_ϕ$ is taken to be $5\times10^{21}$s, WIMPs can be detected at energies above O(40-100)TeV in this detection. Since UHE WIMP fluxes are actually depe…
The recent high energy electron and positron flux observed by the DAMPE experiment indicates possible excess events near 1.4 TeV. Such an excess may be evidence of dark matter annihilations or decays in a dark matter subhalo that is located close to the solar system. We give here an analysis of this excess from annihilations of Dirac fermion dark matter which is charged under a new $U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry. The interactions between dark matter and the standard model particles are mediated the $U(1)_X$ gauge boson. We show that dark matter annihilations from a local subhalo can explain the exces…
Recent accurate measurements of cosmic ray electron flux by the Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) reveal a sharp peak structure near 1.4 TeV, which is difficult to explain by standard astrophysical processes. In this letter, we propose a simple model that the enhanced dark matter annihilation via the $e^+e^-$ channel and with the thermal relic annihilation cross section around the current nearest black hole (A0620-00) can satisfactorily account for the sharp peak structure. The predicted dark matter mass is $\sim 1.5-3$ TeV.
Despite the spectacular discovery of an astrophysical neutrino flux by IceCube in 2013, its origin remains a mystery. Whatever its sources, we expect the neutrino flux to be accompanied by a comparable gamma-ray flux. These photons should be degraded in energy by electromagnetic cascades and contribute to the diffuse GeV-TeV flux precisely measured by the Fermi-LAT. Population studies have also permitted to identify the main classes of contributors to this flux, which at the same time have not been associated with major neutrino sources in cross-correlation studies. These considerations allow …
