We consider implications of the IceCube excess for hadronuclear (pp) scenarios of neutrino sources such as galaxy clusters/groups and star-forming galaxies. Since the observed neutrino flux is comparable to the diffuse gamma-ray background flux obtained by Fermi, we place new, strong upper limits on the source spectral index, Γ<2.1-2.2. In addition, the new IceCube data imply that these sources contribute at least 30%-40% of the diffuse gamma-ray background in the 100 GeV range and even ~100% for softer spectra. Our results, which are insensitive to details of the pp source models, are one of the first strong examples of the multimessenger approach combining the measured neutrino and gamma-ray fluxes. The pp origin of the IceCube excess can further be tested by constraining Γ with sub-PeV neutrino observations, by unveiling the sub-TeV diffuse gamma-ray background and by observing such pp sources with TeV gamma-ray detectors. We also discuss specific pp source models with a multi-PeV neutrino break/cutoff, which are consistent with the current IceCube data.
We discuss a simple non-supersymmetric model based on the electroweak gauge group $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)^\prime\times U(1)_{B-L}$ where the lightest of the right-handed neutrinos, which are part of the leptonic doublet of $SU(2)^\prime$, play the role of a long-lived unstable dark matter with mass in the multi-PeV range. We use a resonant $s$-channel annihilation to obtain the correct thermal relic density and relax the unitarity bound on dark matter mass. In this model, there exists a 3-body dark matter decay mode producing tau leptons and neutrinos, which could be the source for the PeV cascad…
Deep inelastic scattering of very high-energy neutrinos can potentially be enhanced by the production of a single top quark or charm quark via the interaction of a virtual $W$-boson exchange with a $b$-quark or $s$-quark parton in the nucleon. The single top contribution shows a sharp rise at neutrino energies above 0.5 PeV and gives a cross-section contribution of order 5 percent at 10 PeV, while single charm has a low energy threshold and contributes about 25 percent. Semi-leptonic decays of top and charm give di-muon events whose kinematic characteristics are shown. The angular separation o…
We study possible effects of non-local gravity corrections on the recent discovery by the IceCube collaboration reporting high-energy neutrino flux detected at energies of order PeV. Considering the 4-dimensional operator $\sim y_{αχ}\bar{L_{α}}\, H\, χ$, it is possible to explain both the IceCube neutrino rate and the abundance of Dark Matter, provided that non-local corrections are present in the cosmological background. Furthermore, the mechanism could constitute a natural way to address the $H_0$ tension issue.
The discovery by the IceCube experiment of a high-energy astrophysical neutrino flux with energies of the order of PeV, has opened new scenarios in astroparticles physics. A possibility to explain this phenomenon is to consider the minimal models of Dark Matter (DM) decay, the 4-dimensional operator $\sim y_{αχ}\overline{L_{L_α}}\, H\, χ$, which is also able to generate the correct abundance of DM in the Universe. Assuming that the cosmological background evolves according to the standard cosmological model, it follows that the rate of DM decay $Γ_χ\sim |y_{αχ}|^2$ needed to get the correct DM…
Gamma-ray Astronomy with Muons: Sensitivity of IceCube to PeVatrons in the Southern Sky
The recent study on the the 6-year up-going muon neutrinos by the IceCube Collaboration and the multi-messenger analyses support the hypothesis of a two-component scenario explaining the diffuse TeV-PeV neutrino flux. Depending on the steepness of the astrophysical power-law, an excess in the IceCube data is shown in the energy range 10-100 TeV (low-energy excess) or at PeV (high-energy excess). In both cases, we characterize a two-component neutrino flux where decaying Dark Matter particles provide a contribution to the IceCube observations.
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has observed a diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos with energies from TeV to a few PeV. Recent IceCube analyses have limited sensitivity to PeV neutrinos because upward-going neutrino fluxes are attenuated by the Earth while the Extremely High Energy (EHE) result targets cosmogenic neutrinos only above 10 PeV. In this work, we present a new event selection that fills the gap between 1 PeV and 10 PeV. This sample is obtained by selecting high-energy down-going through-going tracks from 8 years of data. To reduce the atmospheric muon backgrounds and achieve a…

Electron anti-neutrinos at the Glashow resonance (GR, at $E_{\bar ν_e} \sim 6.3$ PeV) have an enhanced probability to be detected. With three neutrinos detected by IceCube in the (1-2) PeV energy range at present, one would expect that about 1 to 4 GR $\barν_e$ should have been detected. The high-energy $\sim 8.7$ PeV muon neutrino detected by IceCube may not be a GR event. If so, we expect to detect 50 to 70 GR $\barν_e$, then one would have a "missing Glashow-resonance problem". This would suggest (1) that $pγ$ interaction rather than $pp$ interaction is the dominant channel to produce the o…
The observation of very high energy neutrino events at IceCube has grasped a lot of attention in the fields of both astrophysics and particle physics. It has been speculated that these high energy neutrinos might originate either from purely conventional astrophysical sources or from the late decay of a super heavy (PeV scale) dark matter (DM) particle. In order for decaying DM to be a dominant source of the IceCube high-energy neutrinos, it would require an unusually suppressed value of the coupling of DM to neutrinos. We attempt to explain this small coupling in the context of an $R$-parity …
Carpet-2 is an air-shower array at Baksan Valley, Russia, equipped with a large-area (175 m^2) muon detector, which makes it possible to separate primary photons from hadrons. We report the first results of the search for primary photons with energies E_γ>1 PeV, directionally associated with IceCube high-energy neutrino events, in the data obtained in 3080 days of Carpet-2 live time.
Evidence for high-energy astrophysical PeV neutrinos has been found in the IceCube experiment from an analysis with a 7.5 year (2010 - 2017) data. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are among the most prominent objects in the universe, and are widely speculated to be emitters of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic rays with proton domination. Based on the standard two-step LLCD mechanism of particle acceleration, a transformation of energy occurs from AGN's central super-massive black hole (SMBH) rotation to high-energy protons. Protons can be accelerated up to $\sim 0.1$ EeV energies and above, and migh…
The Glashow resonant scattering, $i.e$. ${\overlineν^{}_{e} + e^{-} \rightarrow W^{-} \rightarrow \text{anything}}$, offers us a possibility of disentangling $\overlineν^{}_{e}$ from the total astrophysical neutrino fluxes. Meanwhile, a great number of high-energy neutrino telescopes, with various detection mechanisms, are advancing towards a better understanding of one of the most energetic frontiers of the Universe. In this work, we investigate a connection between through-going muons at IceCube and the Glashow resonance signal through the channel $W^{-} \rightarrow μ$. We find that for IceC…

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole is a multi-component detector capable of measuring the cosmic ray energy spectrum and composition from PeV to EeV, the energy region typically thought to cover the transition from galactic to extragalactic sources of cosmic rays. The IceTop array at the surface is sensitive to the electromagnetic part of the air shower while the deep in-ice array detects the high-energy (TeV) muonic component of air showers. IceTop's reconstructed shower size parameter, S$_{125}$, is unfolded into a high statistics all-particle energy spectrum. Furthermore, fo…
Although many high-energy neutrinos detected by the IceCube telescope are believed to have anextraterrestrial origin, their astrophysical sources remain a mystery. Recently, an unprecedenteddiscovery of a high-energy muon neutrino event coincident with a multiwavelength flare from ablazar, TXS 0506+056, shed some light on the origin of the neutrinos. It is usually believed that ablazar is produced by a relativistic jet launched from an accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH).Here we show that the high-energy neutrino event can be interpreted by the inelastic hadronuclearinteractions between t…
The diffuse Galactic gamma-ray flux between 0.1 and 1 PeV has recently been measured by the Tibet AS$γ$ Collaboration. The flux and spectrum are consistent with the decay of neutral pions from hadronuclear interactions between Galactic cosmic rays and the interstellar medium (ISM). We derive the flux of the Galactic diffuse neutrino emission from the same interaction process that produces the gamma rays. Our calculation accounts for the effect of gamma-ray attenuation inside the Milky Way and uncertainties due to the spectrum and distribution of cosmic rays, gas density, and infrared emission …
We report on measurements of the all-particle cosmic ray energy spectrum and composition in the PeV to EeV energy range using three years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The IceTop detector measures cosmic ray induced air showers on the surface of the ice, from which the energy spectrum of cosmic rays is determined by making additional assumptions about the mass composition. A separate measurement is performed when IceTop data are analyzed in coincidence with the high-energy muon energy loss information from the deep in-ice IceCube detector. In this measurement, both the spectru…
Recently, Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has detected several Galactic point sources of ultra high energy (UHE; $E_γ> 100$ TeV) gamma-rays. These gamma-rays are possibly created in leptonic or hadronic interactions of cosmic rays (CRs) of PeV energies. In the hadronic channel ($p-p$ interaction), the gamma-rays are accompanied by neutrinos. The detection of neutrinos is therefore crucial in understanding CR acceleration in such objects. To estimate the neutrino flux, we adopt the two LHAASO sources (J2226+6057, J1908+0621) found to be spatially associated with the Supernov…
