The excess of high energy neutrinos observed by the IceCube collaboration might originate from baryon number violating decays of heavy shadow baryons from dark mirror sector which produce shadow neutrinos. These sterile neutrino species then oscillate into ordinary neutrinos transferring to them specific features of their spectrum. In particular, this scenario can explain the end of the spectrum above 2 PeV and the presence of the energy gap between 400 TeV and 1 PeV.
We determine constraints on parameters of a single eV-scale light neutrino using IceCube-59 data. Particular emphasis is put on the question whether such an analysis can rule out sterile neutrino hints. While important complementary information is provided, the different dependence on the various sterile neutrino mixing angles makes it currently not possible to fully exclude short baseline appearance results or sterile neutrinos in general.
The short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, the excess of radiation from the measurement of the cosmic microwave background radiation, the necessity of the nonbaryonic dark matter candidate and the depletion of the neutrino flux in IceCube all seem to hint at new physics beyond the standard model. An economical way to address these issues is to invoke the existence of sterile neutrinos. We present simple extensions of the standard model with additional three sterile neutrinos and discuss the corresponding PMNS like neutrino flavor mixing matrix. The noteworthy features of the sterile …
The flavor composition of astrophysical neutrinos observed in neutrino telescopes is a powerful discriminator between different astrophysical neutrino production mechanisms and can also teach us about the particle physics properties of neutrinos. In this paper, we investigate how the possible existence of light sterile neutrinos can affect these flavor ratios. We consider two scenarios: (i) neutrino production in conventional astrophysical sources, followed by partial oscillation into sterile states; (ii) neutrinos from dark matter decay with a primary flavor composition enhanced in tau neutri…
We discuss the possibility that a sterile neutrino of mass around 50 MeV slightly mixed with the muon flavor may be the origin of the MiniBooNE anomaly. We show that its production in the atmosphere in a fraction of kaon decays would imply an excess of contained showers at IceCube from down-going and near-horizontal directions.
We study oscillations of the high energy atmospheric neutrinos in the Earth into sterile neutrinos with the eV-scale mass. The MSW resonance and parametric enhancement of the $\barν_μ\to\barν_s$ oscillations lead to distortion of the zenith angle distribution of the muon-track events which can be observed by IceCube. Due to matter effect, the IceCube signal depends not only on the mixing element $U_{μ4}$ relevant for LSND and MiniBooNE but also on $U_{τ4}$ and the CP-violating phase $δ_{24}$. We show that the case with $U_{τ4} = δ_{24} = 0$ leads to the weakest IceCube signal and therefore sho…
We show that study of the atmospheric neutrinos in the 10--100 GeV energy range by DeepCore sub-array of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory can substantially constrain the mixing of sterile neutrinos of mass $\sim 1$ eV with active neutrinos. In the scheme with one sterile neutrino we calculate $ν_μ-$ and $\barν_μ-$ oscillation probabilities as well as zenith angle distributions of $ν_μ^{CC}$ events in different energy intervals in DeepCore. The distributions depend on the mass hierarchy of active neutrinos. Therefore, in principle, the hierarchy can be identified, if $ν_s$ exists. After a few y…
We analyze the energy and zenith angle distributions of the latest 2-year IceCube dataset of upward going atmospheric neutrinos to constrain sterile neutrinos at the eV scale in the 3+1 scenario. We find that the parameters favored by a combination of LSND and MiniBooNE data are excluded at more than the 99% C.L. We explore the impact of nonstandard matter interactions on this exclusion, and find that the exclusion holds for nonstandard interactions (NSI) that are within the stringent model-dependent bounds set by collider and neutrino scattering experiments. However, for large NSI parameters …
Data from the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments, and revised expectations of the antineutrino flux from nuclear reactors suggest the existence of eV-mass sterile neutrinos. 3+2 and 1+3+1 scenarios accommodate all relevant short-baseline neutrino data except for the low-energy MiniBooNE anomaly. We analyze the angular distribution of upward going atmospheric neutrino events in the IceCube-40 dataset for evidence of sterile neutrinos within these scenarios. Depending on how systematic uncertainties are handled, we find strong evidence for, or weak evidence against sterile neutrinos. We show that fu…
IceCube has observed a flux of cosmic neutrinos, with a "bump" in the energy range $10 \lesssim E/{\rm TeV} \lesssim 100$ that creates a $3σ$ tension with gamma-ray data from the Fermi satellite. This has been interpreted as evidence for a population of hidden cosmic-ray accelerators. We propose an alternative explanation of this conundrum on the basis of cold dark matter which decays into sterile neutrinos that after oscillations produce the bump in the cosmic neutrino spectrum.
In the absence of an astrophysical standard candle, IceCube can study the deficit of cosmic rays from the direction of the Moon. The observation of this "Moon shadow" in the downgoing muon flux is an experimental verification of the absolute pointing accuracy and the angular resolution of the detector with respect to energetic muons passing through. The Moon shadow has been observed in the 40-string configuration of IceCube. This is the first stage of IceCube in which a Moon shadow analysis has been successful. Method, results, and some systematic error studies will be discussed.
Oscillation interpretation of the results from the LSND, MiniBooNE and some other experiments requires existence of sterile neutrino with mass $\sim 1$ eV and mixing with the active neutrinos $|U_{μ0}|^2 \sim (0.02 - 0.04)$. It has been realized some time ago that existence of such a neutrino affects significantly the fluxes of atmospheric neutrinos in the TeV range which can be tested by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. In view of the first IceCube data release we have revisited the oscillations of high energy atmospheric neutrinos in the presence of one sterile neutrino. Properties of the o…
IceCube is the world's largest neutrino telescope, recently completed at the South Pole. As a proof of pointing accuracy, we look for the image of the Moon as a deficit in down-going cosmic ray muons, using techniques similar to those used in IceCube's astronomical point-source searches.
The IceCube neutrino telescope at the South Pole has measured the atmospheric muon neutrino spectrum as a function of zenith angle and energy in the approximate 320 GeV to 20 TeV range, to search for the oscillation signatures of light sterile neutrinos. No evidence for anomalous $ν_μ$ or $\barν_μ$ disappearance is observed in either of two independently developed analyses, each using one year of atmospheric neutrino data. New exclusion limits are placed on the parameter space of the 3+1 model, in which muon antineutrinos would experience a strong MSW-resonant oscillation. The exclusion limits…
The shadowing effect of the Moon and Sun in TeV cosmic rays has been measured with high statistical significance by several experiments. Unlike particles from directions close to the Moon, however, charged particles passing by the neighborhood of the Sun are affected not only by the geomagnetic but also by the solar near- and interplanetary-magnetic field. Since the latter undergoes a well-known 11-year cycle -- during which it can become highly disordered -- the cosmic-ray shadow cast by the Sun as observed on Earth is expected to change over time. We present an update of the analysis of the …
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a cubic-kilometer-scaled detector located at the Geographic South Pole. The calibration of the directional reconstruction of neutrino-induced muons and the pointing accuracy of the detector have to be verified. For these purposes, the moon is used as a standard candle to not rely exclusively on simulated data: Cosmic rays get absorbed by the moon, which leads to a deficit of cosmic-ray-induced muons from the lunar direction that is measured with high statistics. The moon shadow analysis uses an unbinned maximum-likelihood method, which has been methodically …
The 4.8$σ$ anomaly in MiniBooNE data cannot be reconciled with MINOS+ and IceCube data within the vanilla framework of neutrino oscillations involving an eV-mass sterile neutrino. We show that an apparently consistent picture can be drawn if charged-current and neutral-current nonstandard neutrino interactions are at work in the 3+1 neutrino scheme. It appears that either the neutrino sector is more elaborate than usually envisioned, or one or more datasets needs revision.
Neutrino telescopes provide strong sensitivity to sterile neutrino oscillations through matter-enhanced oscillation, occurring in the few TeV energy range for eV$^{2}$-scale neutrino mass-squared splittings. Prior searches have focused on $ν_μ$ disappearance, which has a particularly strong sensitivity to the mixing angle $θ_{24}$ via $ν_μ\rightarrowν_s$ transitions. Nowadays, the $ν_μ\rightarrowν_e$ and $ν_μ\rightarrowν_τ$ appearance channels have been considered less promising at neutrino telescopes, due in part to the much smaller target volume for cascades relative to tracks. This work exp…
Future neutrino detectors will obtain high-statistics data from a nearby core-collapse supernova. We study the mixing with eV-mass sterile neutrinos in a supernova environment and its effects on the active neutrino fluxes as detected by Hyper-Kamiokande and IceCube. Using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis, we make projections for how accurately these experiments will measure the active-sterile mixing angle $θ_s$ given that there are substantial uncertainties on the expected luminosity and spectrum of active neutrinos from a galactic supernova burst. We find that Hyper-Kamiokande can reconstr…
We consider the effects of active-sterile secret neutrino interactions, mediated by a new pseudoscalar particle, on high- and ultra high-energy neutrino fluxes. In particular, we focus on the case of 3 active and 1 sterile neutrino coupled by a flavor dependent interaction, extending the case of 1 active and 1 sterile neutrino we have recently examined. We find that, depending on the kind of interaction of sterile neutrino with the active sector, new regions of the parameter space for secret interactions are now allowed leading to interesting phenomenological implications on two benchmark flux…
The high energy neutrinos produced in a choked GRB can undergo matter oscillation before emerging out of the stellar envelope. Before reaching the detector on Earth, these neutrinos can undergo further vacuum oscillation and then Earth matter oscillation. In the context of IceCube we study the Earth matter effect on neutrino flux in the detector. For the calculation of track-to-shower ratio R in the IceCube, we have included the shadowing effect and the additional contribution from the muon track produced by the high energy tau lepton decay in the vicinity of the detector. We observed that R i…
A variety of new physics models allows for neutrinos to up-scatter into heavier states. If the incident neutrino is energetic enough, the heavy neutrino may travel some distance before decaying. In this work, we consider the atmospheric neutrino flux as a source of such events. At IceCube, this would lead to a "double-bang" (DB) event topology, similar to what is predicted to occur for tau neutrinos at ultra-high energies. The DB event topology has an extremely low background rate from coincident atmospheric cascades, making this a distinctive signature of new physics. Our results indicate tha…
The ANITA balloon experiment has recently observed several ~EeV cascade events at an angle below the horizon that renders any Standard Model (SM) interpretation unlikely as the Earth is significantly opaque to all SM particles at such energies. In this paper, we study a sterile neutrino interpretation of these events, calculating the angular acceptance of cascades and the relative sensitivities of several experiments to a cascade initiated by an EeV sterile neutrino. We find that ANITA is uniquely sensitive to this type of upward directed cascade signal over a wide portion of the sky and from …
Astrophysical objects such as active-galactic nuclei (AGN) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can be sources of high energy, astrophysical neutrinos. The decay of charged pions produces electron and muon-flavor neutrinos from the primary decay of the pion, and from the secondary decay of the resulting charged lepton. At low energies we expect the flavor ratio $Φ_{ν_e}:Φ_{ν_μ}:Φ_{ν_τ}$ to be $1:2:0$ at the source. We are interested in the flavor ratios as measured on Earth after the neutrinos propagate over cosmic distance scales from the source. If we only consider vacuum flavor transition probabilit…

We generalize gravitational particle production in a radiation-dominated $CPT$-symmetric universe to non-standard, but also $CPT$-symmetric early universe cosmologies. We calculate the mass of a right-handed "sterile" neutrino needed for it to be the cosmological dark matter. Since generically sterile neutrinos mix with the Standard Model active neutrinos, we use state-of-the-art tools to compute the expected spectrum of gamma rays and high-energy active neutrinos from ultra-heavy sterile neutrino dark matter decay. We demonstrate that the sterile neutrinos are never in thermal equilibrium in …
The recent measurement of high energy extragalactic neutrinos by the IceCube Collaboration has opened a new window to probe non-standard neutrino properties. Among other effects, sterile neutrino altered dispersion relations (ADRs) due to shortcuts in an extra dimension can significantly affect astrophysical flavor ratios. We discuss two limiting cases of this effect, first active-sterile neutrino oscillations with a constant ADR potential and second an MSW-like resonant conversion arising from geodesics oscillating around the brane in an asymmetrically warped extra dimension. We demonstrate t…
The atmospheric neutrino data collected by the IceCube experiment and its low-energy extension DeepCore provide a unique opportunity to probe the neutrino sector of the Standard Model. In the low energy range the experiment have observed neutrino oscillations, and the high energy data are especially sensitive to signatures of new physics in the neutrino sector. In this context, we previously demonstrated the unmatched potential of the experiment to reveal the existence of light sterile neutrinos. The studies are routinely performed in the simplest 3+1 model concentrating on disappearance of mu…
We describe several components in the diffuse flux of high energy neutrinos reaching the Earth and discuss whether they could explain IceCube's observations. Then we focus on TeV neutrinos from the Sun. We show that this solar neutrino flux is correlated with the cosmic-ray shadow of the Sun measured by HAWC, and we find that it is much larger than the flux of atmospheric neutrinos. Stars like our Sun provide neutrinos with a very steep spectrum and no associated gammas. We argue that this is the type of contribution that could solve the main puzzle presented by the high energy IceCube data.
The steep spectrum of neutrinos measured by IceCube extending from >1 PeV down to ~10 TeV has an energy flux now encroaching on the Fermi isotropic GeV background. We examine several implications starting from source energetics requirements for neutrino production. We show how the environment of extragalactic nuclei can extinguish ~10-100 TeV gamma rays and convert their energy to X-rays for plausible conditions of infrared luminosity and magnetic field, so that the Fermi background is not overwhelmed by cascades. We address a variety of scenarios, such as for acceleration by supermassive blac…
The source of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) is still an unresolved mystery. Up until recently, sources of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) had been considered as a suitable source for UHECR. Within the fireball model, the UHECR produced at GRBs should be accompanied with a neutrino flux detectable at the neutrino telescope such as IceCube. Recently, IceCube has set an upper bound on the neutrino flux accompanied by GRBs about 3.7 times below the prediction. We investigate whether this deficit can be explained by the oscillation of the active neutrinos to sterile neutrinos en route from the sour…
We study the detection prospects of relatively light charged scalars in radiative Majorana neutrino mass models, such as the Zee model and its variants using scalar leptoquarks, at current and future neutrino telescopes. In particular, we show that these scalar mediators can give rise to Glashow-like resonance features in the ultra-high energy neutrino (UHE) event spectrum at the IceCube neutrino observatory and its high-energy upgrade IceCube-Gen2. The same scalars can also give rise to observable non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI), and we show that the UHE neutrinos provide a complemen…
Neutrino masses and light (keV-GeV) sterile neutrinos can arise naturally via a modified, low energy seesaw mechanism if the right-handed neutrinos are charged under a new symmetry broken by a PeV scale vacuum expectation value, presumably tied to supersymmetry breaking. The additional field content also allows for freeze-in production of sterile neutrino dark matter. This framework can accommodate the recently observed 3.5 keV X-ray line, while a straightforward extension of the framework, using the new symmetry and the PeV energy scale, can explain the PeV energy neutrino events at IceCube. …
We report on the observation of a deficit in the cosmic ray flux from the directions of the Moon and Sun with five years of data taken by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Between May 2010 and May 2011 the IceCube detector operated with 79 strings deployed in the glacial ice at the South Pole, and with 86 strings between May 2011 and May 2015. A binned analysis is used to measure the relative deficit and significance of the cosmic ray shadows. Both the cosmic ray Moon and Sun shadows are detected with high statistical significance ($>10σ$) for each year. The results for the Moon shadow are con…
We report on the observation of a significant deficit of cosmic rays from the direction of the Moon with the IceCube detector. The study of this "Moon shadow" is used to characterize the angular resolution and absolute pointing capabilities of the detector. The detection is based on data taken in two periods before the completion of the detector: between April 2008 and May 2009, when IceCube operated in a partial configuration with 40 detector strings deployed in the South Pole ice, and between May 2009 and May 2010 when the detector operated with 59 strings. Using two independent analysis met…
It has been recently proposed that a sterile neutrino ν_h of mass m_h=40--80 MeV, mixing |U_{μh}|^2=10^{-3}--10^{-2}, lifetime τ_h \lsim 10^{-9} s, and a dominant decay mode (ν_h \to ν_μγ) could be the origin of the experimental anomalies observed at LSND, KARMEN and MiniBooNE. Such a particle would be abundant inside air showers, as it can be produced in kaon decays (K -> ν_h μ, K_L -> ν_h πμ). We use the Z-moment method to evaluate its atmospheric flux and the frequency of its decays inside neutrino telescopes. We show that the ν_h would imply around 10^4 contained showers per year inside a …
Observations of the time-dependent cosmic-ray Sun shadow have been proven as a valuable diagnostic for the assessment of solar magnetic field models. In this paper, seven years of IceCube data are compared to solar activity and solar magnetic field models. A quantitative comparison of solar magnetic field models with IceCube data on the event rate level is performed for the first time. Additionally, a first energy-dependent analysis is presented and compared to recent predictions. We use seven years of IceCube data for the Moon and the Sun and compare them to simulations on data rate level. Th…
The cosmic-ray Sun shadow, which is caused by high-energy charged cosmic rays being blocked and deflected by the Sun and its magnetic field, has been observed by various experiments, such as Argo-YBJ, HAWC, Tibet, and IceCube. Most notably, the shadow's size and depth was recently shown to correlate with the 11-year solar cycle. The interpretation of such measurements, which help to bridge the gap between solar physics and high-energy particle astrophysics, requires a solid theoretical understanding of cosmic-ray propagation in the coronal magnetic field. It is the aim of this paper to establi…
In a recent combined analysis of short baseline neutrino oscillation data by Conrad et al it is shown that (3+3) neutrino model, defined by three active and three sterile neutrinos, results in an overall goodness of $67\%$ and a compatibility of $90\%$ among all data sets - to be compared to the compatibility of $0.043\% $ and $13\% $ for a (3+1) and a (3+2) model, respectively. Aside from the fact that (3+3) model still finds inconsistencies with MiniBooNE appearance data sets, its high quality overall compatibility and goodness of fit led us to study the atmospheric neutrinos in this model w…
We propose a model where a long-lived pseudoscalar EeV particle can be produced with sufficient abundance so as to account for the cold dark matter density, despite having a Planck mass suppressed coupling to the thermal bath. Connecting this state to a hidden sterile neutrino sector through derivative couplings, induced by higher dimensional operators, allows one to account for light neutrino masses while having a lifetime that can be much larger than the age of the Universe. Moreover, the same derivative coupling accounts for the production of dark matter in the very first instant of the reh…
Astrophysical and atmospheric neutrinos are important probes of the powerful accelerators that produce cosmic-rays with EeV energies. Understanding these accelerators is a key goal of neutrino observatories, along with searches for neutrinos from supernovae, from dark matter annihilation, and other astrophysics topics. Here, we discuss how neutrino observatories like IceCube and future facilities like KM3NeT and IceCube-Gen2 can study the properties of high-energy (above 1 TeV) neutrino interactions. This is far higher than is accessible at man-made accelerators, where the highest energy neutr…
We couple a sterile neutrino sector to a spin-3/2 particle and show that with a Planck reduced coupling, we can obtain a sufficiently long lifetime making the spin-3/2 particle a good dark matter candidate. We show that this dark matter candidate can be produced during inflationary reheating through the scattering of Standard Model particles. The relic abundance as determined by Planck and other experimental measurements is attained for reasonable values of the reheating temperature $T_{\rm RH} \gtrsim 10^{8}$ GeV. We consider two possible gauge invariant couplings to the extended Standard Mod…
Neutrino telescopes like IceCube, KM3NeT and Baikal-GVD offer physicists the opportunity to study neutrinos with energies far beyond the reach of terrestrial accelerators. These neutrinos are used to study high-energy neutrino interactions and to probe the Earth through absorption tomography. Current studies of TeV neutrinos use cross sections which are calculated for free nucleons with targets which are assumed to contain equal numbers of protons and neutrons. Here we consider modifications of high-energy neutrino interactions due to two nuclear effects: modifications of the parton densities …
