We study the time evolution of early universe which is developed by a cosmological constant $Λ_4$ and supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) fields in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) space-time. The renormalized vacuum expectation value of energy-momentum tensor of the SYM theory is obtained in a holographic way. It includes a radiation of the SYM field, parametrized as $C$. The evolution is controlled by this radiation $C$ and the cosmological constant $Λ_4$. For positive $Λ_4$, an inflationary solution is obtained at late time. When $C$ is added, the quantum mechanical situation at early time is fairly changed. Here we perform the early time analysis in terms of two different approaches, (i) the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and (ii) Lorentzian path-integral with the Picard-Lefschetz method by introducing an effective action. The results of two methods are compared.
The Hartle-Hawking wave function in cosmology can be viewed as a decaying wave function with anti-de Sitter (AdS) boundary conditions. We show that the growing wave function in AdS familiar from Euclidean AdS/CFT is equivalent, semiclassically and up to surface terms, to the tunneling wave function in cosmology. The cosmological measure in the tunneling state is given by the partition function of certain relevant deformations of CFTs on a locally AdS boundary. We compute the partition function of finite constant mass deformations of the O(N) vector model on the round three sphere and show this…
We consider correlator of two concentric Wilson loops, a small and large ones related to the problem of flux-tube formation. There are three mechanisms which can contribute to the connected correlator and yield different dependences on the radius of the small loop. The first one is quite standard and concerns exchange by supergravity modes. We also consider a novel mechanism when the flux-tube formation is described by a barrier transition in the string language, dual to the field-theoretic formulation of Yang-Mills theories. The most interesting possibility within this approach is resonant tu…
We propose a way to obtain holographic cosmology models for 3+1 dimensional cosmologies vs. 3 dimensional field theories from a "dimensional reduction" procedure, obtained by integrating over the time direction, of (modifed) standard holographic duals of 3+1 dimensional field theories. The example of a modified ${\cal N}=4$ SYM vs. $AdS_5\times S^5$ is presented, and in perturbation theory doesn't match observations, though at strong coupling it might. But the proposed mechanism is more general, and it could in principle be applied to other top down holographic models.
We show that our Universe lives in a topological and non-perturbative vacuum state full of a large amount of hidden quantum hairs, the hairons. We will discuss and elaborate on theoretical evidences that the quantum hairs are related to the gravitational topological winding number in vacuo. Thus, hairons are originated from topological degrees of freedom, holographically stored in the de Sitter area. The hierarchy of the Planck scale over the Cosmological Constant (CC) is understood as an effect of a Topological Memory intrinsically stored in the space-time geometry. Any UV quantum destabiliza…
We studied the correction of the quantum tunneling radiation of fermions with spin $1/2$ in Kerr Anti-de-Sitter black hole. First, the dynamic equation of spin $1/2$ fermions was corrected using Lorentz's violation theory. Second, the new expressions of the fermions quantum tunneling rate, the Hawking temperature of the black hole and the entropy of the black hole were obtained according to the corrected fermions dynamic equation. At last, some comments are made on the results of our work.
We revisit HHH model in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101}, 031601 (2008)] and extend the ansatz of matter fields to being of depending on a spatial dimension except the holographic direction. Despite homogeneous solutions of ground and excited states, especially for the excited states, there also exists solutions where the translational invariance is broken. It is worth mentioning that no periodic sources are assigned to the matter fields, so the translational symmetry is broken spontaneously. We investigate how the new solutions and the condensates of excited states develop with the change of tempe…
Holographic modeling of strongly correlated many-body systems motivates the study of novel spacetime geometries where the scaling behavior of quantum critical systems is encoded into spacetime symmetries. Einstein-Dilaton-Maxwell theory has planar black brane solutions that exhibit Lifshitz scaling and in some cases hyperscaling violation. Entanglement entropy and Wilson loops in the dual field theory are studied by inserting simple geometric probes involving minimal surfaces into the black brane geometry. Coupling to background matter fields leads to interesting low-energy behavior in hologra…
We study tunneling pair creation of W-Bosons by an external electric field on the Coulomb branch of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We use AdS/CFT holography to find a generalization of Schwinger's formula for the pair production rate to the strong coupling, planar limit which includes the exchange of virtual massless particles to all orders. We find that the pair creation formula has an upper critical electric field beyond which the process is no longer exponentially suppressed. The value of the critical field is identical to that which occurs in the Born-Infeld action of probe D3-brane…
The recent proposal on the correspondence between the ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and string theory in the Penrose limit of the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ geometry involves a few puzzles from the viewpoint of holographic principle, especially in connection with the interpretation of times. To resolve these puzzles, we propose to interpret the PP-wave strings on the basis of tunneling null geodesics connecting boundaries of the AdS geometry. Our approach predicts a direct and systematic identification of the S-matrix of Euclidean string theory in the bulk with the short-distance structure of c…
Gauge theory/string theory holographic correspondence for ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is well under control in the planar limit, and for large (infinitely large) 't Hooft coupling, $λ\to \infty$. Certain aspects of the correspondence can be extended including ${\cal O}(λ^{-3/2})$ corrections. There are no reliable first principle computations of the ${\cal N}=4$ plasma non-equilibrium properties beyond the stated order. We show extreme sensitivity of the non-hydrodynamic spectra of holographic ${\cal N}=4$ SYM plasma to ${\cal O}(λ^{-3})$ corrections, challenging any conclusi…
In this paper, we extend our study of the holographic Rényi entropy of single interval on a torus to the CFT with W symmetry. To read the possible corrections from W fields clearly, we compute the thermal correction to the Rényi entropy up to the order $e^{-8π/TL}$. In the field theory, this requires us to compute the contribution from all the level 4 states, from both the vacuum module and W primaries. On the gravity side, after computing the eigenvalue of single Schottky generators to the order $e^{-4 π/TL}$, we obtain the 1-loop quantum correction to the holographic Rényi entropy. We find c…
According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, the ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory has been studied by solving the dual supergravity. In solving the bulk Einstein equation, we find that it could be related to the 4D Friedmann equation, which is solved by using the cosmological constant and the energy density of the matters on the boundary, and they are dynamically decoupled from the SYM theory. We call this combination of the bulk Einstein equations and the 4D Friedmann equation as holographic Friedmann equations (HFE). Solving the HFE, it is shown how the 4D decoupled matters an…
We find the holographic dual to the three classes of superconformal Janus interfaces in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM that preserve three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$, $\mathcal{N}=2$, and $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry. The solutions are constructed in five-dimensional SO(6) maximal gauged supergravity and are then uplifted to type IIB supergravity. Corresponding to each of the three classes of Janus solutions, there are also AdS$_4\times S^1\times S^5$ J-fold backgrounds. These J-folds have a non-trivial SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy for the axio-dilaton on the $S^1$ and are dual to three-dimensional sup…
We discuss various aspect of the holographic correspondence between 5-d gravity and 4-d field theory. First of all, we describe deformations of N=4 Super Yang-Mills (SYM) theories in terms of 5-d gauged supergravity. In particular, we describe N=0 and N=1 deformations of N=4 SYM to confining theories. Secondly, we describe recent proposals for the holographic dual of the renormalization group and for 4-d central charges associated to it. We conclude with a ``holographic'' proof of the Goldstone theorem.
Tunneling in quantum field theory is well understood in the case of a single scalar field. However, in theories with spontaneous symmetry breaking, one has to take into account the additional zero modes which appear due to the Goldstone phenomenon. We calculate the false vacuum decay rate in this case. The result may differ significantly from the tunneling rates in the absence of symmetry breaking.
We study the time evolution of holographic mutual and tripartite information for a zero temperature $CFT$, derives to a non-relativistic thermal Lifshitz field theory by a quantum quench. We observe that the symmetry breaking does not play any role in the phase space, phase of parameters of sub-systems, and the length of disentangling transition. Nevertheless, mutual and tripartite information indeed depend on the rate of symmetry breaking. We also find that for large enough values of $δt$ the quantity $t_{eq}δt^{-1}$, where $δt$ and $t_{eq}$ are injection time and equilibration time respectiv…
It is known that a classical SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime can provide a holographic dual to a 2+1 dimensional time reversal symmetry breaking superconductor with a pseudogap. We study the properties of this holographic superconductor in the presence of an applied constant external magnetic field, neglecting backreaction on the geometry. The superconductor is immersed into a constant external magnetic field by adding a radially (the extra dimension) dependent magnetic field to the black hole. As for real superconductors, there is a critical magnet…
We compute holographically the vevs of all chiral primary operators for supergravity solutions corresponding to the Coulomb branch of N=4 SYM and find exact agreement with the corresponding field theory computation. Using the dictionary between 10d geometries and field theory developed to extract these vevs, we propose a gravity dual of a half supersymmetric deformation of N=4 SYM by certain irrelevant operators.
Holographic CFTs and holographic RG flows on space-time manifolds which are $d$-dimensional products of spheres are investigated. On the gravity side, this corresponds to Einstein-dilaton gravity on an asymptotically $AdS_{d+1}$ geometry, foliated by a product of spheres. We focus on holographic theories on $S^2\times S^2$, we show that the only regular five-dimensional bulk geometries have an IR endpoint where one of the sphere shrinks to zero size, while the other remains finite. In the $Z_2$-symmetric limit, where the two spheres have the same UV radii, we show the existence of a infinite d…
We revisit the theory of strongly correlated quantum matter perturbed by Harris-marginal random-field disorder, using the simplest holographic model. We argue that for weak disorder, the ground state of the theory is not Lifshitz invariant with a non-trivial disorder-dependent dynamical exponent, as previously found. Instead, below a non-perturbatively small energy scale, we predict infrared physics becomes independent of the disorder strength.
Very special $T\bar{J}$ deformations of a conformal field theory are irrelevant deformations that break the Lorentz symmetry but preserve the twisted Lorentz symmetry. We construct a holographic description of very special $T\bar{J}$ deformations. We give a holographic recipe to study the double trace as well as single trace deformations. The former is obtained from the change of the boundary condition while the latter is obtained from the change of the supergravity background.
We derive a new class of supersymmetric D3/D7 brane configurations, which allow to holographically describe N=4 SYM coupled to massive N=2 flavor degrees of freedom on spaces of constant curvature. We systematically solve the $κ$-symmetry condition for D7-brane embeddings into AdS$_4$-sliced AdS$_5\times$S$^5$, and find supersymmetric embeddings in a simple closed form. Up to a critical mass, these embeddings come in surprisingly diverse families, and we present a first study of their (holographic) phenomenology. We carry out the holographic renormalization, compute the one-point functions and…
In a hard-wall model of holographic QCD, we find that nonlinear boundary dynamics are required in order to maintain the correct pattern of explicit and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking beyond leading order in the pion fields. With the help of a field redefinition, we relate the requisite nonlinear boundary conditions to a standard Sturm-Liouville system. Observables insensitive to the chiral limit receive only small corrections in the improved description, and classical calculations in the hard-wall model remain surprisingly accurate.
We study the time development of strongly coupled ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang Mills (SYM) theory on cosmological Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) backgrounds via the AdS/CFT correspondence. We implement the cosmological background as a boundary metric fulfilling the Friedmann equation with a four-dimensional cosmological constant and a dark radiation term. We analyze the dual bulk solution of the type IIB supergravity and find that the time-dependence of the FRW background strongly influences the dynamical properties of the SYM theory. We in particular find a phase transition between a co…
Type IIB S-folds of the form $\,\textrm{AdS}_{4} \times \textrm{S}^1 \times \textrm{S}^5\,$ are conjectured to correspond to new strongly coupled three-dimensional CFT's on a localised interface of $\,\textrm{SYM}_{4}\,$. In this work we construct holographic RG flows on the D3-brane that generically connect anisotropic deformations of $\,\textrm{SYM}_{4}\,$ in the UV to various S-fold $\textrm{CFT}$'s in the IR with different amounts of supersymmetry and flavour symmetries. Examples of holographic RG flows between \mbox{S-fold} CFT's are also presented. Lastly a geometric interpretation of ax…
A self-consistent holographic QCD model is proposed which can realize both chiral symmetry breaking and confinement, two most important phenomena of QCD. It is pointed out that the model can accommodate both Regge spectra of hadrons and the linear potential between quarks. The model is formulated in the framework of graviton-dilaton-scalar system, where the dilaton field is dual to the dimension-2 gluon condensate and can lead to the linear confinement, while the scalar field corresponds to the quark anti-quark condensate and can explain the property of chiral dynamics.
We review a recent investigation of the effect of magnetic catalysis of mass generation in holographic Yang-Mills theories. We aim at a self-contained and pedagogical form of the review. We provide a brief field theory background and review the basics of holographic flavordynamics. The main part of the review investigates the influence of external magnetic field on holographic gauge theories dual to the D3/D5-- and D3/D7-- brane intersections. Among the observed phenomena are the spontaneous breaking of a global internal symmetry, Zeeman splitting of the energy levels and the existence of pseu…
We discuss the holographic counterpart of a recent conjecture regarding R-symmetric RG-flows in four-dimensional supersymmetric field theories. In such theories, a quantity τ_U can be defined at the fixed points which was conjectured in arXiv:1109.3279 to be larger in the UV than in the IR, τ_U^{UV} > τ_U^{IR}. We analyze this conjecture from a dual supergravity perspective: using some general properties of domain wall solutions dual to R-symmetric RG flows, we define a bulk quantity which interpolates between the correct τ_U at the UV and IR fixed points, and study its monotonicity properties…
We study the instability, for the supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theories, caused by the external electric field through the imaginary part of the action of the D7 probe brane, which is embedded in the background of type IIB theory. This instability is related to the Schwinger effect, namely to the quark pair production due to the external electric field, for the $SU(N_c)$ SYM theories. In this holographic approach, it is possible to calculate the Schwinger effect for various phases of the theories. Here we give the calculation for ${\cal N}=2$ SYM theory and the analysis is extended to the f…
Homogeneous, zero temperature scaling solutions with Bianchi VII spatial geometry are constructed in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory. They correspond to quantum critical saddle points with helical symmetry at finite density. Assuming $AdS_{5}$ UV asymptotics, the small frequency/(temperature) dependence of the AC/(DC) electric conductivity along the director of the helix are computed. A large class of insulating and conducting anisotropic phases is found, as well as isotropic, metallic phases. Conduction can be dominated by dissipation due to weak breaking of translation symmetry or by a quant…
In this work we reason that there is a universal picture for several different holographic toy model constructions, and a gravity-like bulk field theory that gives rise it. First, we observe that the perfect tensor-networks and hyperbolic fracton models are both equivalent to the even distribution of bit-threads on geodesics in the AdS space. Such picture is also a natural "leading-order" approximation to the holographic entanglement properties. Then, we argue that the rank-2 U(1) theory with linearized diffeomorphism as its gauge symmetry, also known as a case of Lifshitz gravity, is the bulk…
All possible scaling IR asymptotics in homogeneous, translation invariant holographic phases preserving or breaking a U(1) symmetry in the IR are classified. Scale invariant geometries where the scalar extremizes its effective potential are distinguished from hyperscaling violating geometries where the scalar runs logarithmically. It is shown that the general critical saddle-point solutions are characterized by three critical exponents ($θ, z, ζ$). Both exact solutions as well as leading behaviors are exhibited. Using them, neutral or charged geometries realizing both fractionalized or cohesiv…
The transit times are obtained for a symmetrized (two identical bosons) and an antisymmetrized (two identical fermions) quantum colliding configuration. Considering two identical particles symmetrically impinging on a one-dimensional barrier, we demonstrate that the phase time and the dwell time give connected results where, however, the exact position of the scattered particles is explicitly determined by the phase time (group delay). For the antisymmetrized wave function configuration, an unusual effect of {\em accelerated} transmission is clearly identified in a simultaneous tunneling of tw…
We study fermions in an electrically-probed and asymptotically anti-de Sitter Schwarzschild spacetime which interact via novel chiral symmetry-preserving interactions. Computing the dual fermion two-point correlator, we show that these bulk interactions anisotropically gap Fermi surfaces of the boundary spectrum. Consequently, the interactions we devise provide holographic models for Fermi arcs seen ubiquitously in the pseudogap regime of the cuprates. Our interactions are modifications of the chiral symmetry-breaking Pauli coupling, which has previously been proposed as the holographic realiz…
We investigate nonlinear extensions of the holographic soft wall model proposed by Karch, Katz, Son and Stephanov \cite{Karch:2006pv} with a positive quadratic dilaton. We consider a Higgs potential for the tachyonic field that brings a more natural realisation of chiral symmetry breaking in the infrared regime. Utilising the AdS/CFT dictionary and holographic renormalisation we find the chiral condensate as a function of the quark mass. The nonlinearity of the Higgs potential leads to a nonlinear relation between the chiral condensate and the quark mass. Solving the effective Schrödinger equa…
Cohen and Glashow introduced the notion of very special relativity as viable space-time symmetry of elementary particle physics. As a natural generalization of their idea, we study the subgroup of the conformal group, dubbed very special conformal symmetry, which is an extension of the very special relativity. We classify all of them and construct field theory examples as well as holographic realization of the very special conformal field theories.

Using the framework of higher-form global symmetries, we examine the regime of validity of force-free electrodynamics by evaluating the lifetime of the electric field operator, which is non-conserved due to screening effects. We focus on a holographic model which has the same global symmetry as that of low energy plasma and obtain the lifetime of (non-conserved) electric flux in a strong magnetic field regime. The lifetime is inversely correlated to the magnetic field strength and thus suppressed in the strong field regime.
Recently, we constructed the first-principle derivation of the holographic dual of N=4 SYM in the double-scaled $γ$-deformed limit directly from the CFT side. The dual fishchain model is a novel integrable chain of particles in AdS5. It can be viewed as a discretized string and revives earlier string-bit approaches. The original derivation was restricted to the operators built out of one of two types of scalar fields. In this paper, we extend our results to the general operators having any number of scalars of both types, except for a very special case when their numbers are equal. Interesting…
Most holographic models of superconducting systems neglect the effects of dynamical boundary gauge fields during the process of spontaneous symmetry-breaking. Usually a global symmetry gets broken. This yields a superfluid, which then is gauged "weakly" afterwards. In this work we build (and probe the dynamics of) a holographic model in which a local boundary symmetry is spontaneously broken instead. We compute two-point functions of dynamical non-Abelian gauge fields in the normal and in the broken phase, and find non-trivial gapless modes. Our AdS3 gravity dual realizes a p-wave superconduct…
