Low visual quality has prevented underwater robotic vision from a wide range of applications. Although several algorithms have been developed, real-time and adaptive methods are deficient for real-world tasks. In this paper, we address this difficulty based on generative adversarial networks (GAN), and propose a GAN-based restoration scheme (GAN-RS). In particular, we develop a multi-branch discriminator including an adversarial branch and a critic branch for the purpose of simultaneously preserving image content and removing underwater noise. In addition to adversarial learning, a novel dark channel prior loss also promotes the generator to produce realistic vision. More specifically, an underwater index is investigated to describe underwater properties, and a loss function based on the underwater index is designed to train the critic branch for underwater noise suppression. Through extensive comparisons on visual quality and feature restoration, we confirm the superiority of the proposed approach. Consequently, the GAN-RS can adaptively improve underwater visual quality in real time and induce an overall superior restoration performance. Finally, a real-world experiment is conducted on the seabed for grasping marine products, and the results are quite promising. The source code is publicly available at https://github.com/SeanChenxy/GAN_RS.

In real-world underwater environment, exploration of seabed resources, underwater archaeology, and underwater fishing rely on a variety of sensors, vision sensor is the most important one due to its high information content, non-intrusive, and passive nature. However, wavelength-dependent light attenuation and back-scattering result in color distortion and haze effect, which degrade the visibility of images. To address this problem, firstly, we proposed an unsupervised generative adversarial network (GAN) for generating realistic underwater images (color distortion and haze effect) from in-air…

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) rely on a variety of sensors - acoustic, inertial and visual - for intelligent decision making. Due to its non-intrusive, passive nature, and high information content, vision is an attractive sensing modality, particularly at shallower depths. However, factors such as light refraction and absorption, suspended particles in the water, and color distortion affect the quality of visual data, resulting in noisy and distorted images. AUVs that rely on visual sensing thus face difficult challenges, and consequently exhibit poor performance on vision-driven tasks…

Recent advancements in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) enable the generation of highly realistic images, raising concerns about their misuse for malicious purposes. Detecting these GAN-generated images (GAN-images) becomes increasingly challenging due to the significant reduction of underlying artifacts and specific patterns. The absence of such traces can hinder detection algorithms from identifying GAN-images and transferring knowledge to identify other types of GAN-images as well. In this work, we present the Transferable GAN-images Detection framework T-GD, a robust transferable fra…

To boost the object grabbing capability of underwater robots for open-sea farming, we propose a new dataset (UDD) consisting of three categories (seacucumber, seaurchin, and scallop) with 2,227 images. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first 4K HD dataset collected in a real open-sea farm. We also propose a novel Poisson-blending Generative Adversarial Network (Poisson GAN) and an efficient object detection network (AquaNet) to address two common issues within related datasets: the class-imbalance problem and the problem of mass small object, respectively. Specifically, Poisson GAN combi…

Although the recent advancement in generative models brings diverse advantages to society, it can also be abused with malicious purposes, such as fraud, defamation, and fake news. To prevent such cases, vigorous research is conducted to distinguish the generated images from the real images, but challenges still remain to distinguish the unseen generated images outside of the training settings. Such limitations occur due to data dependency arising from the model's overfitting issue to the training data generated by specific GANs. To overcome this issue, we adopt a self-supervised scheme to prop…

The state-of-the-art StyleGAN2 network supports powerful methods to create and edit art, including generating random images, finding images "like" some query, and modifying content or style. Further, recent advancements enable training with small datasets. We apply these methods to synthesize card art, by training on a novel Yu-Gi-Oh dataset. While noise inputs to StyleGAN2 are essential for good synthesis, we find that coarse-scale noise interferes with latent variables on this dataset because both control long-scale image effects. We observe over-aggressive variation in art with changes in n…

Despite remarkable success in image-to-image translation that celebrates the advancements of generative adversarial networks (GANs), very limited attempts are known for video domain translation. We study the task of video-to-video translation in the context of visual speech generation, where the goal is to transform an input video of any spoken word to an output video of a different word. This is a multi-domain translation, where each word forms a domain of videos uttering this word. Recent advancements in conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs) have shown promises in label guided image synthesis. Semantic masks, such as sketches and label maps, are another intuitive and effective form of guidance in image synthesis. Directly incorporating the semantic masks as constraints dramatically reduces the variability and quality of the synthesized results. We observe this is caused by the incompatibility of features from different inputs (such as mask image and latent vector) of the generator. To use semantic masks as guidance whilst providing realistic synthesized res…

In recent years, hyperspectral image (HSI) classification based on generative adversarial networks (GAN) has achieved great progress. GAN-based classification methods can mitigate the limited training sample dilemma to some extent. However, several studies have pointed out that existing GAN-based HSI classification methods are heavily affected by the imbalanced training data problem. The discriminator in GAN always contradicts itself and tries to associate fake labels to the minority-class samples, and thus impair the classification performance. Another critical issue is the mode collapse in G…

Concretely, we disentangle encoded features into multiple frequency components and perform low-frequency skip connections to preserve outline and structural information. Then we alleviate the generator's struggles of synthes…

Automated lesion segmentation from computed tomography (CT) is an important and challenging task in medical image analysis. While many advancements have been made, there is room for continued improvements. One hurdle is that CT images can exhibit high noise and low contrast, particularly in lower dosages. To address this, we focus on a preprocessing method for CT images that uses stacked generative adversarial networks (SGAN) approach. The first GAN reduces the noise in the CT image and the second GAN generates a higher resolution image with enhanced boundaries and high contrast. To make up fo…
