One-dimensional chain of pointwise particles harmonically coupled with nearest neighbors and placed in six-order polynomial on-site potentials is considered. Power of the energy source in the form of single ac driven particles is calculated numerically for different amplitudes $A$ and frequencies $ω$ within the linear phonon band. The results for the on-site potentials with hard and soft nonlinearity types are compared. For the hard-type nonlinearity, it is shown that when the driving frequency is close to (far from) the {\em upper} edge of the phonon band, the power of the energy source normalized to $A^2$ increases (decreases) with increasing $A$. In contrast, for the soft-type nonlinearity, the normalized power of the energy source increases (decreases) with increasing $A$ when the driving frequency is close to (far from) the {\em lower} edge of the phonon band. Our further demonstrations indicate that, in the case of hard (soft) anharmonicity, the chain can support movable discrete breathers (DBs) with frequencies above (below) the phonon band. It is the energy source quasi-periodically emitting moving DBs in the regime with driving frequency close to the DBs frequency, that induces the increase of the power. Therefore, our results here support the mechanism that the moving DBs can assist energy transfer from the ac driven particle to the chain.
The mobility of high-frequency discrete breathers in monatomic chains with nonlinear interatomic potentials of the nearest neighbours is considered. It was found that the odd (cubic and fifth) anharmonicity strongly affects the mobility of breathers, sharply increasing the distance that it propagates without being trapped. It was also found that the correctly chosen fifth anharmonicity leads to an inversion of stability between the bond-centred and site-centers breathers and to the low-radiative propagation of discrete breathers along the chain.
In the present work, we develop a systematic examination of the existence, stability and dynamical properties of a discrete breather at the interface between a diatomic and a monoatomic granular chain. We remarkably find that such an "interface breather" is more robust than its bulk diatomic counterpart throughout the gap of the linear spectrum. The latter linear spectral gap needs to exist for the breather state to arise and the relevant spectral conditions are discussed. We illustrate the minimal excitation conditions under which such an interface breather can be "nucleated" and analyze its …
We examine the dynamics of strongly localized periodic solutions (discrete breathers) in two-dimensional array of coupled finite one-dimensional chains of oscillators. Localization patterns with both single and multiple localization sites (multibreathers) are considered. The model is scalar, i.e. each particle can move only parallel to the axis of the chain it belongs to. The model involves symmetric parabolic on-site potential with rigid constraints (the displacement domain of each particle is finite) and a linear nearest-neighbor coupling in the chain, and also between the neighbors in adjac…
We study a locally resonant granular material in the form of a precompressed Hertzian chain with linear internal resonators. Using an asymptotic reduction, we derive an effective nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) modulation equation. This, in turn, leads us to provide analytical evidence, subsequently corroborated numerically, for the existence of two distinct types of discrete breathers related to acoustic or optical modes: (a) traveling bright breathers with a strain profile exponentially vanishing at infinity and (b) stationary and traveling dark breathers, exponentially localized, time-periodic …
We report on the existence of discrete breathers in a one-dimensional, mass-in-mass chain with linear intersite coupling and nonlinear Hertzian local resonators, which is motivated by recent studies of the dynamics of microspheres adhered to elastic substrates. After predicting theoretically the existence of the discrete breathers in the continuum and anticontinuum limits of intersite coupling, we use numerical continuation to compute a family of breathers interpolating between the two regimes in a finite chain, where the displacement profiles of the breathers are localized around one or two l…
In strained monoatomic chains with Lennard-Jones interactions, we revealed a stable static non-homogeneous structure appearing as a result of a certain phase transition. Positions of individual particles in this structure form an exact arithmetic progression whose difference depends on the value of the strain. For N-particle chain, this structure is characterized by one long and N-1 short interatomic distances (bonds). In the vicinity of the static structure, we found discrete breathers of new type which essentially differ from the traditional breathers in the form of Sievers-Takeno and Page m…
We explore dynamics of discrete breathers and multi-breathers in finite one-dimensional chain. The model involves parabolic on-site potential with rigid constraints and linear nearest-neighbor coupling. The rigid non-ideal impact constraints are the only source of nonlinearity and damping in the model. The model allows derivation of exact analytic solutions for the breathers and multi-breathers with arbitrary set of localization sites, both in conservative and forced-damped settings. We choose periodic boundary conditions; exact solutions for other types of the boundary conditions are also pos…
We propose a model for a chain of particles coupled by nonlinear springs in which each mass has an internal mass and all interactions are assumed to be nonlinear. We show how to construct an asymptotic solution of this system using multiple timescales, the systematic solution of coupled equations by repeated application of a consistency condition. Our results show that for some combinations of nonlinearity the dynamics are governed by the NLS as in the more usual mass-in-mass chains with linear interactions between inner and outer masses. However, when both nonlinearities have quadratic compon…
We explore breather propagation in the damped oscillatory chain with essentially nonlinear (non-linearizable) nearest-neighbour coupling. Combination of the damping and the substantially nonlinear coupling leads to rather unusual two-stage pattern of the breather propagation. The first stage occurs at finite fragment of the chain and is characterized by power-law decay of the breather amplitude. The second stage is characterized by extremely small breather amplitudes that decay hyper-exponentially with the site number. Thus, practically, one can speak about finite penetration depth of the brea…
In the aerospace industry the trend for light-weight structures and the resulting complex dynamic behaviours currently challenge vibration engineers. In many cases, these light-weight structures deviate from linear behaviour, and complex nonlinear phenomena can be expected. We consider a cyclically symmetric system of coupled weakly nonlinear undamped oscillators that could be considered a minimal model for different cyclic and symmetric aerospace structures experiencing large deformations. The focus is on localised vibrations that arise from wave envelope modulation of travelling waves. For t…
We explore the dynamics of strongly localized periodic solutions (discrete solitons, or discrete breathers) in a finite one-dimensional chain of asymmetric vibro-impact oscillators. The model involves a parabolic on-site potential with asymmetric rigid constraints (the displacement domain of each particle is finite), and a linear nearest-neighbor coupling. When the particle approaches the constraint, it undergoes an impact (not necessarily elastic), that satisfies Newton impact law. Nonlinearity of the system stems from the impacts; their possible non-elasticity is the sole source of damping i…
Inspired by the experimental results of Cuevas et al. (Physical Review Letters 102, 224101 (2009)), we consider theoretically the behavior of a chain of planar rigid pendulums suspended in a uniform gravitational field and subjected to a horizontal periodic driving force applied to the pendulum pivots. We characterize the motion of a single pendulum, finding bistability near the fundamental resonance, and near the period-3 subharmonic resonance. We examine the development of modulational instability in a driven pendulum chain and find both a critical chain length and critical frequency for the…
We consider the localized nonlinear breathing modes that emerge in heterogeneous granular configurations of two materials with a periodicity of three and four beads. We examine as characteristic examples chains with 1 steel and 2 alumnium beads, as well as ones with 1 steel and three aluminum beads. We analyze the higher order gaps that emerge in such settings and explore the intrinsic localized modes that bifurcate from the edge of the upper bands. A generic surprising feature of such states is that they appear to be more robust than their counterparts bifurcating from the edges of the lower …
We consider an infinite chain of particles linearly coupled to their nearest neighbours and subject to an anharmonic local potential. The chain is assumed weakly inhomogeneous. We look for small amplitude discrete breathers. The problem is reformulated as a nonautonomous recurrence in a space of time-periodic functions, where the dynamics is considered along the discrete spatial coordinate. We show that small amplitude oscillations are determined by finite-dimensional nonautonomous mappings, whose dimension depends on the solutions frequency. We consider the case of two-dimensional reduced map…
We prove nonexistence of breathers (spatially localized and time-periodic oscillations) for a class of Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices representing an uncompressed chain of beads interacting via Hertz's contact forces. We then consider the setting in which an additional on-site potential is present, motivated by the Newton's cradle under the effect of gravity. Using both direct numerical computations and a simplified asymptotic model of the oscillator chain, the so-called discrete p-Schrödinger (DpS) equation, we show the existence of discrete breathers and study their spectral properties and mobili…
Nonlinearity shapes lattice dynamics affecting vibrational spectrum, transport and thermalization phenomena. Beside breathers and solitons one finds the third fundamental class of nonlinear modes -- $q$-breathers -- periodic orbits in nonlinear lattices, exponentially localized in the reciprocal mode space. To date, the studies of $q$-breathers have been confined to the cubic and quartic nonlinearity in the interaction potential. In this paper we study the case of arbitrary nonlinearity index $γ$ in an acoustic chain. We uncover qualitative difference in the scaling of delocalization and stabi…
We study localized waves in chains of oscillators coupled by Hertzian interactions and trapped in local potentials. This problem is originally motivated by Newton's cradle, a mechanical system consisting of a chain of touching beads subject to gravity and attached to inelastic strings. We consider an unusual setting with local oscillations and collisions acting on similar time scales, a situation corresponding e.g. to a modified Newton's cradle with beads mounted on stiff cantilevers. Such systems support static and traveling breathers with unusual properties, including double exponential spat…
We present a study of the existence, stability and bifurcation structure of families of dark breathers in a one-dimensional uniform chain of spherical beads under static load. A defocus- ing nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) is derived for frequencies that are close to the edge of the phonon band and is used to construct targeted initial conditions for numerical computations. Salient features of the system include the existence of large amplitude solutions that bifurcate with the small amplitude solutions described by the NLS equation, and the presence of a nonlinear instability that, to th…
We consider a chain of torsionally-coupled, planar pendula shaken horizontally by an external sinusoidal driver. It has been known that in such a system, theoretically modeled by the discrete sine-Gordon equation, intrinsic localized modes, also known as discrete breathers, can exist. Recently, the existence of multifrequency breathers via subharmonic driving has been theoretically proposed and numerically illustrated by Xu {\em et al.} in Phys. Rev. E {\bf 90}, 042921 (2014). In this paper, we verify this prediction experimentally. Comparison of the experimental results to numerical simulatio…
Exact solutions for symmetric discrete breathers (DBs) are obtained in forced-damped linear chain with on-site vibro-impact constraints. The damping is related to inelastic impacts; the forcing may be chosen from broad class of periodic antisymmetric functions. Global conditions for existence and stability of the DB are established. Some unusual phenomena, like non-monotonous dependence of the stability boundary on the forcing amplitude, are revealed analytically for the full system and illustrated numerically for small periodic lattices.
We derive a Hamiltonian version of the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation that describes synchronized dynamics of coupled pendula driven by a periodic movement of their common strings. In the limit of weak coupling between the pendula, we classify the existence and spectral stability of breathers (time-periodic solutions localized in the lattice) supported near one pair of coupled pendula. Orbital stability or instability of breathers is proved in a subset of the existence region.
Existence of large-amplitude time-periodic breathers localized near a single site is proved for the discrete Klein--Gordon equation, in the case when the derivative of the on-site potential has a compact support. Breathers are obtained at small coupling between oscillators and under nonresonance conditions. Our method is different from the classical anti-continuum limit developed by MacKay and Aubry, and yields in general branches of breather solutions that cannot be captured with this approach. When the coupling constant goes to zero, the amplitude and period of oscillations at the excited si…
Artificial intelligence in the form of deep learning is now very popular and directly implemented in many areas of science and technology. In the present work we study time evolution of Discrete Breathers in one-dimensional nonlinear chains using the framework of Convolutional Neural Networks. We focus on differentiating discrete breathers which are localized nonlinear modes from linearized phonon modes. The breathers are localized in space and time-periodic solutions of non-linear discrete lattices while phonons are the linear collective oscillations of interacting atoms and molecules. We sho…
The paper addresses compact oscillatory states (compact breathers) in translationally-invariant lattices with flat dispersion bands. The compact breathers appear in such systems even in the linear approximation. If the interactions are nonlinear, but comply with the flat-band symmetry, the compact breather solutions exist, but can lose their stability for certain parameter values. As benchmark nonlinear potentials, we use the $β$-FPU (Fermi-Pasta-Ulam) and vibro-impact models. Loss of stability is numerically observed to occur through either pitchfork or Hopf bifurcations. The loss of stabilit…
By applying an out-of-phase actuation at the boundaries of a uniform chain of granular particles, we demonstrate experimentally that time-periodic and spatially localized structures with a nonzero background (so-called dark breathers) emerge for a wide range of parameter values and initial conditions. Importantly, the number of ensuing breathers within the multibreather pattern produced can be "dialed in" by varying the frequency or amplitude of the actuation. The values of the frequency (resp. amplitude) where the transition between different multibreather states occurs are predicted accurate…
We study the escape of a chain of coupled units over the barrier of a metastable potential. It is demonstrated that a very weak external driving field with suitably chosen frequency suffices to accomplish speedy escape. The latter requires the passage through a transition state the formation of which is triggered by permanent feeding of energy from a phonon background into humps of localised energy and elastic interaction of the arising breather solutions. In fact, cooperativity between the units of the chain entailing coordinated energy transfer is shown to be crucial for enhancing the rate o…
We present a systematic study of the existence and stability of discrete breathers that are spatially localized in the bulk of a one-dimensional chain of compressed elastic beads that interact via Hertzian contact. The chain is diatomic, consisting of a periodic arrangement of heavy and light spherical particles. We examine two families of discrete gap breathers: (1) an unstable discrete gap breather that is centered on a heavy particle and characterized by a symmetric spatial energy profile and (2) a potentially stable discrete gap breather that is centered on a light particle and is characte…
We consider a previously experimentally realized discrete model that describes a mechanical metamaterial consisting of a chain of pairs of rigid units connected by flexible hinges. Upon analyzing the linear band structure of the model, we identify parameter regimes in which this system may possess discrete breather solutions with frequencies inside the gap between optical and acoustic dispersion bands. We compute numerically exact solutions of this type for several different parameter regimes and investigate their properties and stability. Our findings demonstrate that upon appropriate paramet…
A nonlinear chain with six-order polynomial on-site potential is used to analyze the evolution of the total to kinetic energy ratio during development of modulational instability of extended nonlinear vibrational modes. For the on-site potential of hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity, the instability of $q=π$ mode ($q=0$ mode) results in the appearance of long-living discrete breathers (DBs) that gradually radiate their energy and eventually the system approaches thermal equilibrium with spatially uniform and temporally constant temperature. In the hard-type (soft-type) anharmonicity case, the…
We consider the discrete p-Schrödinger (DpS) equation, which approximates small amplitude oscillations in chains of oscillators with fully-nonlinear nearest-neighbors interactions of order alpha = p-1 >1. Using a mapping approach, we prove the existence of breather solutions of the DpS equation with even- or odd-parity reflectional symmetries. We derive in addition analytical approximations for the breather profiles and the corresponding intersecting stable and unstable manifolds, valid on a whole range of nonlinearity orders alpha. In the limit of weak nonlinearity (alpha --> 1^+), we introdu…
The effect of discrete breathers (DBs) on macroscopic properties of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain with symmetric and asymmetric potentials is investigated. The total to kinetic energy ratio (related to specific heat), stress (related to thermal expansion), and Young's modulus are monitored during the development of modulational instability of the zone boundary mode. The instability results in the formation of chaotic DBs followed by the transition to thermal equilibrium when DBs disappear due to energy radiation in the form of small-amplitude phonons. It is found that DBs reduce the specific heat…
We visualize the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) recurrence in a classical Heisenberg ferromagnetic (HF) spin chain by exploiting its gauge eq uivalence to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). We discuss two types of spatially periodic breather excitations in the spin chain, that are associated with: (I) Akhmediev breather, and (II) Galilean transformed Akhmediev breather. The recurrence in the former is exact in the sense that the initial and final states are identical. In the later, the spin chain undergoes an additional global rotation during the rec urrence process, which makes the i…
We explore a recently proposed locally resonant granular system bearing harmonic internal resonators in a chain of beads interacting via Hertzian elastic contacts. In this system, we propose the existence of two types of configurations: (a) small-amplitude periodic traveling waves and (b) dark-breather solutions, i.e., exponentially localized, time periodic states mounted on top of a non-vanishing background. We also identify conditions under which the system admits long-lived bright breather solutions. Our results are obtained by means of an asymptotic reduction to a suitably modified version…
So far, only the energy thresholds of single discrete breathers in nonlinear Hamiltonian systems have been analytically obtained. In this work, the energy thresholds of discrete breathers in thermal equilibrium and the energy thresholds of long-lived discrete breathers which can remain after a long time relaxation are analytically estimated for nonlinear chains. These energy thresholds are size dependent. The energy thresholds of discrete breathers in thermal equilibrium are same as the previous analytical results for single discrete breathers. The energy thresholds of long-lived discrete brea…
