Images captured in low-light conditions usually suffer from very low contrast, which increases the difficulty of subsequent computer vision tasks in a great extent. In this paper, a low-light image enhancement model based on convolutional neural network and Retinex theory is proposed. Firstly, we show that multi-scale Retinex is equivalent to a feedforward convolutional neural network with different Gaussian convolution kernels. Motivated by this fact, we consider a Convolutional Neural Network(MSR-net) that directly learns an end-to-end mapping between dark and bright images. Different fundamentally from existing approaches, low-light image enhancement in this paper is regarded as a machine learning problem. In this model, most of the parameters are optimized by back-propagation, while the parameters of traditional models depend on the artificial setting. Experiments on a number of challenging images reveal the advantages of our method in comparison with other state-of-the-art methods from the qualitative and quantitative perspective.

We propose a marginal super-resolution (MSR) approach based on 2D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for interpolating an anisotropic brain magnetic resonance scan along the highly under-sampled direction, which is assumed to axial without loss of generality. Previous methods for slice interpolation only consider data from pairs of adjacent 2D slices. The possibility of fusing information from the direction orthogonal to the 2D slices remains unexplored. Our approach performs MSR in both sagittal and coronal directions, which provides an initial estimate for slice interpolation. The interpol…
Single image super-resolution (SR) is extremely difficult if the upscaling factors of image pairs are unknown and different from each other, which is common in real image SR. To tackle the difficulty, we develop two multi-scale deep neural networks (MsDNN) in this work. Firstly, due to the high computation complexity in high-resolution spaces, we process an input image mainly in two different downscaling spaces, which could greatly lower the usage of GPU memory. Then, to reconstruct the details of an image, we design a multi-scale residual network (MsRN) in the downscaling spaces based on the …

The channel attention mechanism is a useful technique widely employed in deep convolutional neural networks to boost the performance for image processing tasks, eg, image classification and image super-resolution. It is usually designed as a parameterized sub-network and embedded into the convolutional layers of the network to learn more powerful feature representations. However, current channel attention induces more parameters and therefore leads to higher computational costs. To deal with this issue, in this work, we propose a Parameter-Free Channel Attention (PFCA) module to boost the perf…
Mixed Sample Regularization (MSR), such as MixUp or CutMix, is a powerful data augmentation strategy to generalize convolutional neural networks. Previous empirical analysis has illustrated an orthogonal performance gain between MSR and conventional offline Knowledge Distillation (KD). To be more specific, student networks can be enhanced with the involvement of MSR in the training stage of sequential distillation. Yet, the interplay between MSR and online knowledge distillation, where an ensemble of peer students learn mutually from each other, remains unexplored. To bridge the gap, we make t…
In this paper, we propose a novel fully convolutional two-stream fusion network (FCTSFN) for interactive image segmentation. The proposed network includes two sub-networks: a two-stream late fusion network (TSLFN) that predicts the foreground at a reduced resolution, and a multi-scale refining network (MSRN) that refines the foreground at full resolution. The TSLFN includes two distinct deep streams followed by a fusion network. The intuition is that, since user interactions are more direct information on foreground/background than the image itself, the two-stream structure of the TSLFN reduce…

Deep image relighting allows photo enhancement by illumination-specific retouching without human effort and so it is getting much interest lately. Most of the existing popular methods available for relighting are run-time intensive and memory inefficient. Keeping these issues in mind, we propose the use of Stacked Deep Multi-Scale Hierarchical Network, which aggregates features from each image at different scales. Our solution is differentiable and robust for translating image illumination setting from input image to target image. Additionally, we have also shown that using a multi-step traini…

Human motion prediction is a challenging task due to the stochasticity and aperiodicity of future poses. Recently, graph convolutional network has been proven to be very effective to learn dynamic relations among pose joints, which is helpful for pose prediction. On the other hand, one can abstract a human pose recursively to obtain a set of poses at multiple scales. With the increase of the abstraction level, the motion of the pose becomes more stable, which benefits pose prediction too. In this paper, we propose a novel Multi-Scale Residual Graph Convolution Network (MSR-GCN) for human pose …

Methods based on convolutional neural networks have improved the performance of biomedical image segmentation. However, most of these methods cannot efficiently segment objects of variable sizes and train on small and biased datasets, which are common for biomedical use cases. While methods exist that incorporate multi-scale fusion approaches to address the challenges arising with variable sizes, they usually use complex models that are more suitable for general semantic segmentation problems. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture called Multi-Scale Residual Fusion Network (MSRF-Net),…
Recovering an image from a noisy observation is a key problem in signal processing. Recently, it has been shown that data-driven approaches employing convolutional neural networks can outperform classical model-based techniques, because they can capture more powerful and discriminative features. However, since these methods are based on convolutional operations, they are only capable of exploiting local similarities without taking into account non-local self-similarities. In this paper we propose a convolutional neural network that employs graph-convolutional layers in order to exploit both lo…

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for text detec- tion in natural images. Both local and global cues are taken into account for localizing text lines in a coarse-to-fine pro- cedure. First, a Fully Convolutional Network (FCN) model is trained to predict the salient map of text regions in a holistic manner. Then, text line hypotheses are estimated by combining the salient map and character components. Fi- nally, another FCN classifier is used to predict the centroid of each character, in order to remove the false hypotheses. The framework is general for handling text in multiple ori- e…
The recent success of learning-based image rain and noise removal can be attributed primarily to well-designed neural network architectures and large labeled datasets. However, we discover that current image rain and noise removal methods result in low utilization of images. To alleviate the reliance of deep models on large labeled datasets, we propose the task-driven image rain and noise removal (TRNR) based on a patch analysis strategy. The patch analysis strategy samples image patches with various spatial and statistical properties for training and can increase image utilization. Furthermor…

In neural architecture search (NAS), differentiable architecture search (DARTS) has recently attracted much attention due to its high efficiency. It defines an over-parameterized network with mixed edges, each of which represents all operator candidates, and jointly optimizes the weights of the network and its architecture in an alternating manner. However, this method finds a model with the weights converging faster than the others, and such a model with fastest convergence often leads to overfitting. Accordingly, the resulting model cannot always be well-generalized. To overcome this problem…
Fully Convolutional Neural Network (FCN) has been widely applied to salient object detection recently by virtue of high-level semantic feature extraction, but existing FCN based methods still suffer from continuous striding and pooling operations leading to loss of spatial structure and blurred edges. After combining visual modality, ASR is upgraded to the multi-modality speech recognition (MSR). In this paper, we propose a two-stage speech recognition model. In the first stage, the target voice is separated from background noises with help from the corresponding visual information of lip movements, making the model 'listen' clearly. At the second stage, the audio modality combines visual modality again …

It is well believed that video captioning is a fundamental but challenging task in both computer vision and artificial intelligence fields. The prevalent approach is to map an input video to a variable-length output sentence in a sequence to sequence manner via Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). Nevertheless, the training of RNN still suffers to some degree from vanishing/exploding gradient problem, making the optimization difficult. Moreover, the inherently recurrent dependency in RNN prevents parallelization within a sequence during training and therefore limits the computations. In this paper,…

We introduce a new arbitrary-shaped text detection approach named ReLaText by formulating text detection as a visual relationship detection problem. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this new formulation, we start from using a "link" relationship to address the challenging text-line grouping problem firstly. The key idea is to decompose text detection into two subproblems, namely detection of text primitives and prediction of link relationships between nearby text primitive pairs. Specifically, an anchor-free region proposal network based text detector is first used to detect text primitives…

Most recent self-supervised learning methods learn visual representation by contrasting different augmented views of images. Compared with supervised learning, more aggressive augmentations have been introduced to further improve the diversity of training pairs. However, aggressive augmentations may distort images' structures leading to a severe semantic shift problem that augmented views of the same image may not share the same semantics, thus degrading the transfer performance. To address this problem, we propose a new SSL paradigm, which counteracts the impact of semantic shift by balancing…

Convolutional networks are the de-facto standard for analyzing spatio-temporal data such as images, videos, and 3D shapes. Whilst some of this data is naturally dense (e.g., photos), many other data sources are inherently sparse. Examples include 3D point clouds that were obtained using a LiDAR scanner or RGB-D camera. Standard "dense" implementations of convolutional networks are very inefficient when applied on such sparse data. We introduce new sparse convolutional operations that are designed to process spatially-sparse data more efficiently, and use them to develop spatially-sparse convol…
