One of the most important results in operator theory is Andô's \cite{ando} generalization of dilation theory for a single contraction to a pair of commuting contractions acting on a Hilbert space. While there are two explicit constructions (Schäffer \cite{sfr} and Douglas \cite{Doug-Dilation}) of the minimal isometric dilation of a single contraction, there was no such explicit construction of an Andô dilation for a commuting pair $(T_1,T_2)$ of contractions, except in some special cases \cite{A-M-Dist-Var, D-S, D-S-S}. In this paper, we give two new proofs of Andô's dilation theorem by giving both Schäffer-type and Douglas-type explicit constructions of an Andô dilation with function-theoretic interpretation, for the general case. The results, in particular, give a complete description of all possible factorizations of a given contraction $T$ into the product of two commuting contractions. Unlike the one-variable case, two minimal Andô dilations need not be unitarily equivalent. However, we show that the compressions of the two Andô dilations constructed in this paper to the minimal dilation spaces of the contraction $T_1T_2$, are unitarily equivalent.
In the special case when the product $T=T_1T_2$ is pure, i.e., if $T^{* n}\to 0$ strongly, an Andô dilation was constructed recently in \cite{D-S-S}, which, as this paper will show, is a corollary to the Douglas-type construction.
We define a notion of characteristic triple for a pair of commuting contractions and a notion of coincidence for such triples. We prove that two pairs of commuting contractions with their products being pure contractions are unitarily equivalent if and only if their characteristic triples coincide. We also characterize triples which qualify as the characteristic triple for some pair $(T_1,T_2)$ of commuting contractions such that $T_1T_2$ is a pure contraction.
It is well-known that an $n$-tuple $(n\ge 3)$ of commuting contractions does not posses an isometric dilation, in general. Considering a class of $n$-tuple of commuting contractions satisfying certain positivity assumption, we construct their isometric dilations and consequently establish their von Neumann inequality. The positivity assumption is related to Brehmer positivity and motivated by the study of isometric dilations of operator tuples in [4].
Given a bounded operator $Q$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, a pair of bounded operators $(T_1, T_2)$ on $\mathcal{H}$ is said to be $Q$-commuting if one of the following holds: \[ T_1T_2=QT_2T_1 \text{ or }T_1T_2=T_2QT_1 \text{ or }T_1T_2=T_2T_1Q. \] We give an explicit construction of isometric dilations for pairs of $Q$-commuting contractions for unitary $Q$, which generalizes the isometric dilation of Ando [2] for pairs of commuting contractions. In particular, for $Q=qI_{\mathcal{H}}$, where $q$ is a complex number of modulus $1$, this gives, as a corollary, an explicit construction of …
Sz.-Nagy and Foias proved that each $C_{\cdot0}$-contraction has a dilation to a Hardy shift and thus established an elegant analytic functional model for contractions of class $C_{\cdot0}$. This has motivated lots of further works on model theory and generalizations to commuting tuples of $C_{\cdot0}$-contractions. In this paper, we focus on doubly commuting sequences of $C_{\cdot0}$-contractions, and establish the dilation theory and the analytic model theory for these sequences of operators. These results are applied to generalize the Beurling-Lax theorem and Jordan blocks in the multivaria…
We introduce a notion called `maximal commuting piece' for tuples of Hilbert space operators. Given a commuting tuple of operators forming a row contraction there are two commonly used dilations in multivariable operator theory. Firstly there is the minimal isometric dilation consisting of isometries with orthogonal ranges and hence it is a noncommuting tuple. There is also a commuting dilation related with a standard commuting tuple on Boson Fock space. We show that this commuting dilation is the maximal commuting piece of the minimal isometric dilation. We use this result to classify all rep…
We find an explicit tetrablock isometric dilation for every member $(A_α, B, P)$ of a family of tetrablock contractions indexed by a parameter $α$ in the closed unit disc (only the first operator of the tetrablock contraction depends on the parameter). The dilation space is the same for any member of the family. Explicit dilation for the adjoint tetrablock contraction $(A_α^*, B^*, P^*)$ for every member of the family mentioned above is constructed as well. This example is important because it has been claimed in the literature that this example does not have a dilation. Taking cue from this c…
Let $A_1,\ldots,A_d$ be a $d$-tuple of commuting dissipative operators on a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Using the theory of operator vessels and their associated systems, we give a construction of a dilation of the multi-parameter semigroup of contractions on $\mathcal{H}$ given by $e^{i \sum_{j=1}^d t_j A_j}$.
This paper extends the trace formulas of [5] with perturbations in normed ideals of $B(H)$ to multivariate functions of commuting contractions admitting a dilation to commuting normal contractions.
These are the notes of a lecture given at the university of Wroclaw in 1996. We present results of semigroups of (sub)positive contractions on L^p-spaces. The dilation theorem of Akcoglue and sucheston is considered as a starting point. We construct a dilation of a strongly continuous semigroup of (sub)positive contractions on L^p-space, 1<p<infinity by a strongly continuous group of invertible isometries acting on some larger L^p-space. The transference results, for functions of the generators, are established as well as some square and maximal functions. This applies especially to sub-markov…
In this work, we give a description of Taylor spectrum of commuting 2- contractions in terms of characteristic functions of such contractions. The case of a single obtained by B.Sz.Nagy and C. Foias is generalised in this work.
We prove some estimates for elementary symmetric polynomials on $\mathbb D^n.$ We show that these estimates are sharp which allow us to study the properties of closed symmetrized polydisc $Γ_n.$ Furthermore, we show the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the operator equations $$S_i-S_{n-i}^*S_n=D_{S_n}X_iD_{S_n}~~{\rm{and}}~~S_{n-i}-S_{i}^*S_n=D_{S_n}X_{n-i}D_{S_n},$$ where $X_i,X_{n-i}\in \mathcal B(\mathcal D_{S_n}), ~{\rm{for ~all~}} i=1,\ldots,(n-1),$ with numerical radius not greater than $1,$ for a $Γ_n$-contraction $(S_1,\ldots, S_n).$ We construct a conditional dilation of vario…
A characteristic function is a special operator-valued analytic function defined on the open unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^n$ associated with an $n$-tuple of commuting row contraction on some Hilbert space. In this paper, we continue our study of the representations of $n$-tuples of commuting row contractions on Hilbert spaces, which have polynomial characteristic functions. Gleason's problem plays an important role in the representations of row contractions. We further complement the representations of our row contractions by proving theorems concerning factorizations of characteristic functions. …
We define four 3x3 commuting contractions which do not dilate to commuting isometries. However they do satisfy the scalar von Neumann inequality. These matrices are all nilpotent of order 2. We also show that any three $3\times3$ commuting contractions which are scalar plus nilpotent of order 2 do dilate to commuting isometries.
We introduce the notion of $Q$-commuting operators which is a generalization of commuting operators. We prove a generalized version of commutant lifting theorem and Ando's dilation theorem in the context of $Q$-commuting operators.
The fundamental result of B. Sz. Nazy states that every contraction has a coisometric extension and a unitary dilation. The isometric dilation of a contraction on a Hilbert space motivated whether this theory can be extended sensibly to families of operators. It is natural to ask whether this idea can be generalized, where the contraction $T$ is substituted by a commuting $n$-tuples of operators $(S_1,\cdots, S_n)$ acting on some Hilbert space having $Γ_n$ as a spectral set. We derive the necessary conditions for the existence of a $Γ_n$-isometric dilation for $Γ_n$-contractions. Also we discu…
An n-dilation of a contraction T acting on a Hilbert space H is a unitary dilation acting on H \oplus C^n. We show that if both defect numbers of T are equal to n, then the closure of the numerical range of T is the intersection of the closures of the numerical ranges of its n-dilations. We also obtain detailed information about the geometrical properties of the numerical range of T in case n=1.
We present a set-theoretic version of some basic dilation results of operator theory. The results we have considered are Wold decomposition, Halmos dilation, Sz. Nagy dilation, inter-twining lifting, commuting and non-commuting dilations, BCL theorem etc. We point out some natural generalizations and variations.
For a contraction P and a bounded commutant S of P, we seek a solution X of the operator equation S-S*P = (I-P*P)^1/2 X(I-P*P) 1/2, where X is a bounded operator on Ran(I-P*P) 1/2 with numerical radius of X being not greater than 1. A pair of bounded operators (S,P) which has the domain \Gamme = {(z 1 +z 2, z 1z 2) : |z1|{\leq} 1, |z2| {\leq}1} {\subseteq} C2 as a spectral set, is called a \Gamme-contraction in the literature. We show the existence and uniqueness of solution to the operator equation above for a Γ-contraction (S,P). This allows us to construct an explicit Γ-isometric dilation o…
A classical result of Sz.-Nagy asserts that a Hilbert-space contraction operator $T$ can be lifted to an isometry $V$. A more general multivariable setting of recent interest for these ideas is the case where (i) the unit disk is replaced by a certain domain contained in ${\mathbb C}^3$ (called the {\em tetrablock}), (ii) the contraction operator $T$ is replaced by a commutative triple $(T_1, T_2, T)$ of Hilbert-space operators having ${\mathbb E}$ as a spectral set (a tetrablock contraction) . The rational dilation question for this setting is whether a tetrablock contraction $(T_1, T_2, T)$ …
A particular case of the fundamental Sz.-Nagy--Foias functional model for a contraction states that a pure contraction always dilates to a pure isometry. We are interested in the similar question for pairs, more precisely: does a pair of commuting pure contractions always dilate to a pair of commuting pure isometries? The purpose of this article is to identify pairs of commuting pure contractions for which the above question has an affirmative answer. Our method is based on an explicit structure of isometric dilation for pure pairs of commuting contractions obtained in a recent work by Das, Sa…
We show that whenever a contractive $k$-tuple $T$ on a finite dimensional space $H$ has a unitary dilation, then for any fixed degree $N$ there is a unitary $k$-tuple $U$ on a finite dimensional space so that $q(T) = P_H q(U) |_H$ for all polynomials $q$ of degree at most $N$.
The collection $\frk{C}_3$ of all triples of commuting contractions forms a family in the sense of Agler, and so has an "optimal" model $\pd\frk{C}_3$ generated by its extremal elements. A given $T\in\frk{C}_3$ is extremal if every $X\in\frk{C}_3$ extending $T$ is an extension by direct sum. We show that many of the known examples of triples in $\frk{C}_3$ that fail to have coisometric extensions are in fact extremal.
Let $Φ_1$ and $Φ_2$ be nondecreasing functions from $\mathbb{R_+}=(0,\infty)$ onto itself. For $i=1,2$ and $γ\in \mathbb{R}$, define the Orlicz class $L_{Φ_{i}}(\mathbb{R_+})$ to be the set of Lebesgue-measurable functions $f$ on $\mathbb{R_+}$ such that \begin{equation*} \int_{\mathbb{R_+}} Φ_{i} \left( k|(Tf)(t)| \right) t^γdt < \infty \end{equation*} for some $k>0$. Our goal in this paper is to find conditions on $Φ_1$, $Φ_2$, $γ$ and an operator $T$ so that the assertions \begin{equation} T : L_{Φ_2,t^γ}(\mathbb{R_+}) \rightarrow L_{Φ_1,t^γ}(\mathbb{R_+}), \tag{I} \end{equation} and \begin…
We obtain dilation results which simultaneously generalize Sz.-Nagy dilation theorem for contractions, Ando's dilation theorem for commuting contractions, Sz.-Nagy--Foias commutant lifting theorem, and Schur's representation for the unit ball of H^\infty, in the framework of noncommutative varieties in several variables and Poisson kernels on Fock spaces. This leads to inequalities which, in the particular case of two contractions, are sharper than Ando's inequality and Agler-McCarthy's inequality in the setting of commuting contractive matrices or arbitrary commuting contractions of class C_0…
Consider $d$ commuting $C_{0}$-semigroups (or equivalently: $d$-parameter $C_{0}$-semigroups) over a Hilbert space for $d \in \mathbb{N}$. In the literature (\textit{cf.} [29, 26, 27, 23, 18, 25]), conditions are provided to classify the existence of unitary and regular unitary dilations. Some of these conditions require inspecting values of the semigroups, some provide only sufficient conditions, and others involve verifying sophisticated properties of the generators. By focussing on semigroups with bounded generators, we establish a simple and natural condition on the generators, \textit{viz…
Motivated by Ball, Li, Timotin and Trent's Schur-Agler class version of commutant lifting theorem, we introduce a class, denoted by $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$, of $n$-tuples of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We always assume that $n \geq 3$. The importance of this class of $n$-tuples stems from the fact that the von Neumann inequality or the existence of isometric dilation does not hold in general for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions on Hilbert spaces (even in the level of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces). Under some rank-finiteness assumptions, w…
We develop a $d$-variable analog of the two-component de Bran-ges-Rovnyak reproducing kernel Hilbert space associated with a Schur-class function on the unit disk. In this generalization, the unit disk is replaced by the unit ball in $d$-dimensional complex Euclidean space, and the Schur class becomes the class of contractive multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space over the ball. We also develop some results on a model theory for commutative row contractions which are not necessarily completely noncoisometric (the case considered in earlier work of Bhattacharyya, Eschmeier and Sarkar)
The symmetrization map $π:\mathbb C^2\rightarrow \mathbb C^2$ is defined by $ π(z_1,z_2)=(z_1+z_2,z_1z_2). $ The closed symmetrized bidisc $Γ$ is the symmetrization of the closed unit bidisc $\overline{\mathbb D^2}$, that is, \[ Γ= π(\overline{\mathbb D^2})=\{ (z_1+z_2,z_1z_2)\,:\, |z_i|\leq 1, i=1,2 \}. \] A pair of commuting Hilbert space operators $(S,P)$ for which $Γ$ is a spectral set is called a $Γ$-contraction. Unlike the scalars in $Γ$, a $Γ$-contraction may not arise as a symmetrization of a pair of commuting contractions, even not as a symmetrization of a pair of commuting bounded op…
Given a row contraction of operators on Hilbert space and a family of projections on the space which stabilize the operators, we show there is a unique minimal joint dilation to a row contraction of partial isometries which satisfy natural relations. For a fixed row contraction the set of all dilations forms a partially ordered set with a largest and smallest element. A key technical device in our analysis is a connection with directed graphs. We use a Wold Decomposition for partial isometries to describe the models for these dilations, and discuss how the basic properties of a dilation depend…
Let E be a product system of C*-correspondences over N^r. Some sufficient conditions for the existence of a not necessarily regular isometric dilation of a completely contractive representation of E are established and difference between regular and *-regular dilations discussed. It is in particular shown that a minimal isometric dilation is *-regular if and only if it is doubly commuting. The case of product systems associated with higher-rank graphs is analysed in detail.
A commuting triple of Hilbert space operators $(A,B,P)$, for which the closed tetrablock $\bar{\mathbb E}$ is a spectral set, is called a \textit{tetrablock-contraction} or simply an $\mathbb E$-\textit{contraction}, where \[ \mathbb E=\{(a_{11},a_{22}, \det A):\, A=[a_{ij}]\in \mathcal M_2(\mathbb C), \; \|A\| <1 \} \subset \mathbb C^3 \] is a polynomially convex domain which is naturally associated with the $μ$-synthesis problem. We introduce triangular $\mathbb E$-contractions and prove that every pure triangular $\mathbb E$-contraction dilates to a pure triangular $\mathbb E$-isometry. We …
We provide an explicit normal distinguished boundary dilation to a pair of commuting operators $(S,P)$ having the closed symmetrized bidisc $Γ$ as a spectral set. This is called Sz.-Nagy dilation of $(S,P)$. The operator pair that dilates $(S,P)$ is obtained by an application of Stinespring dilation of $(S,P)$ given by Agler and Young. We further prove that the dilation is minimal and the dilation space is no bigger than the dilation space of the minimal unitary dilation of the contraction $P$. We also describe model space and model operators for such a pair $(S,P)$.
A contractive $n$-tuple $A=(A_1,...,A_n)$ has a minimal joint isometric dilation $S=(S_1,...,S_n)$ where the $S_i$'s are isometries with pairwise orthogonal ranges. This determines a representation of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra. When $A$ acts on a finite dimensional space, the \wot-closed nonself-adjoint algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ generated by $S$ is completely described in terms of the properties of $A$. This provides complete unitary invariants for the corresponding representations. In addition, we show that the algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ is always hyper-reflexive. In the last section, we describe s…
If $T= \big[ T_1 ... T_n\big]$ is a row contraction with commuting entries, and the Arveson dilation is $\tilde T= \big[ \tilde T_1 ... \tilde T_n\big]$, then any operator $X$ commuting with each $T_i$ dilates to an operator $Z$ of the same norm which commutes with each $\tilde T_i$.
A classical result of Sz.-Nagy asserts that a Hilbert space contraction operator $T$ can be dilated to a unitary $\cU$. A more general multivariable setting for these ideas is the setup where (i) the unit disk is replaced by a domain $Ω$ contained in ${\mathbb C}^d$, (ii) the contraction operator $T$ is replaced by a commuting tuple $\bfT = (T_1, \dots, T_d)$ such that $\| r(T_1, \dots, T_d) \|_{\cL(\cH)} \le \sup_{\lam \in Ω} | r(\lam) |$ for all rational functions with no singularities in $\overlineΩ$ and the unitary operator $\cU$ is replaced by an $Ω$-unitary operator tuple, i.e., a commut…
Absolutely continuous commuting row contractions admit a weak-$*$ continuous functional calculus. Building on recent work describing the first and second dual spaces of the closure of the polynomial multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space, we give a complete characterization of these commuting row contractions in measure theoretic terms. We also establish that completely non-unitary row contractions are necessarily absolutely continuous, in direct parallel with the case of a single contraction. Finally, we consider refinements of this question for row contractions that are annihilated by a give…
This note records some dilation theorems about contraction semigroups on a Hilbert space - all of which fall into the categories "known" or "probably known" - that I proved while working on my PhD in mathematics (under the supervision of Baruch Solel). It is convenient to have them recorded for reference.
This paper is devoted to prove the S. L. Singh's common fixed point Theorem for commuting mappings in cone metric spaces. In this framework, we introduce the notions of Generalized Kannan Con- traction, Generalized Zamfirescu Contraction and Generalized Weak Contraction for a pair of mappings, proving afterward their respective fixed point results.
Consider a nonzero contraction $T$ and a bounded operator $X$ satisfying $TX=qXT$ for a complex number $q$. There are some interesting results in the literature on $q$-commuting dilation and $q$-commutant lifting of such pair $(T,X)$ when $|q|=1$. Here we improve a few of them to the class of scalars $q$ satisfying $|q|\leq \dfrac{1}{\|T\|}$.
This note constructs an explicit normal boundary dilation for a commuting pair $(S,P)$ of bounded operators with the symmetrized bidisk $$Γ=\{(z_1+z_2,z_1z_2):|z_1|,|z_2| \leq 1\}$$ as a spectral set. Such explicit dilations had hitherto been constructed only in the unit disk \cite{sfr}, the unit bidisk \cite{ando} and in the tetrablock \cite{sir and me1}. The dilation is minimal and unique under a suitable condition. This paper also contains a natural example of a $Γ$-isometry. We compute its associated fundamental operator.
