This article presents a new finite element method for convection-diffusion equations by enhancing the continuous finite element space with a flux space for flux approximations that preserve the important mass conservation locally on each element. The numerical scheme is based on a constrained flux optimization approach where the constraint was given by local mass conservation equations and the flux error is minimized in a prescribed topology/metric. This new scheme provides numerical approximations for both the primal and the flux variables. It is shown that the numerical approximations for the primal and the flux variables are convergent with optimal order in some discrete Sobolev norms. Numerical experiments are conducted to confirm the convergence theory. Furthermore, the new scheme was employed in the computational simulation of a simplified two-phase flow problem in highly heterogeneous porous media. The numerical results illustrate an excellent performance of the method in scientific computing.

We report in this paper the analysis for the linear and nonlinear version of the flux corrected transport (FEM-FCT) scheme in combination with the backward Euler time-stepping scheme applied to time-dependent convection-diffusion-reaction problems. We present the stability and error estimates for the linear and nonlinear FEM-FCT scheme. Numerical results confirm the theoretical predictions.
In this paper, we present optimal error estimates of the local discontinuous Galerkin method with generalized numerical fluxes for one-dimensional nonlinear convection-diffusion systems. The upwind-biased flux with adjustable numerical viscosity for the convective term is chosen based on the local characteristic decomposition, which is helpful in resolving discontinuities of degenerate parabolic equations without enforcing any limiting procedure. For the diffusive term, a pair of generalized alternating fluxes are considered. By constructing and analyzing generalized Gauss-Radau projections wi…
This paper investigates superconvergence properties of the local discontinuous Galerkin methods with generalized alternating fluxes for one-dimensional linear convection-diffusion equations. By the technique of constructing some special correction functions, we prove the $(2k+1)$th order superconvergence for the cell averages, and the numerical traces in the discrete $L^2$ norm. In addition, superconvergence of order $k+2$ and $k+1$ are obtained for the error and its derivative at generalized Radau points. All theoretical findings are confirmed by numerical experiments.
Entropy-conservative numerical flux functions can be used to construct high-order, entropy-stable discretizations of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. The purpose of this short communication is to present a novel family of such entropy-conservative flux functions. The proposed flux functions are solutions to quadratic optimization problems and admit closed-form, computationally affordable expressions. We establish the properties of the flux functions including their continuous differentiability, which is necessary for high-order discretizations.
Flux-corrected transport (FCT) is one of the flux limiter methods. Unlike the total variation diminishing methods, obtaining the known FCT formulas for computing flux limiters is not quite transparent, and their transformation is not obvious when the original differential operator changes. We propose a novel formal mathematical approach to design flux correction for weighted hybrid difference schemes by using linear programming. The hybrid scheme is a linear combination of a monotone scheme and a high order scheme. The determination of maximal antidiffusive fluxes is treated as an optimization…
We provide a framework for high-order discretizations of nonlinear scalar convection-diffusion equations that satisfy a discrete maximum principle. The resulting schemes can have arbitrarily high order accuracy in time and space, and can be stable and maximum-principle-preserving (MPP) with no step size restriction. The schemes are based on a two-tiered limiting strategy, starting with a high-order limiter-based method that may have small oscillations or maximum-principle violations, followed by an additional limiting step that removes these violations while preserving high order accuracy. The…

In this paper, we show that diagonal-norm summation by parts (SBP) discretizations of general non-conservative systems of hyperbolic balance laws can be rewritten as a finite-volume-type formula, also known as flux-differencing formula, if the non-conservative terms can be written as the product of a local and a symmetric contribution. Furthermore, we show that the existence of a flux-differencing formula enables the use of recent subcell limiting strategies to improve the robustness of the high-order discretizations. To demonstrate the utility of the novel flux-differencing formula, we constr…
In this paper, we propose a novel development in the context of entropy stable finite-volume/finite-difference schemes. In the first part, we focus on the construction of high-order entropy conservative fluxes. Already in [LMR2002], the authors have generalized the second order accurate entropy conservative numerical fluxes proposed by Tadmor to high-order ($2p$) by a simple centered linear combination. We generalize this result additionally to non-centered flux combinations which is in particular favorable if non-periodic boundary conditions are needed. In the second part, a Lax-Wendroff theo…
We show how to combine in a natural way (i.e. without any test nor switch) the conservative and non conservative formulations of an hyperbolic system that has a conservative form. This is inspired from two different class of schemes: the Residual Distribution one \cite{MR4090481}, and the Active Flux formulations \cite{AF1, AF3, AF4,AF5,RoeAF}. The solution is globally continuous, and as in the active flux method, described by a combination of point values and average values. Unlike the "classical" active flux methods, the meaning of the pointwise and cella averaged degrees of freedom is diffe…
In this contribution we analyze the large time behavior of a family of nonlinear finite volume schemes for anisotropic convection-diffusion equations set in a bounded bidimensional domain and endowed with either Dirichlet and / or no-flux boundary conditions. We show that solutions to the two-point flux approximation (TPFA) and discrete duality finite volume (DDFV) schemes under consideration converge exponentially fast toward their steady state. The analysis relies on discrete entropy estimates and discrete functional inequalities. As a biproduct of our analysis, we establish new discrete Poi…
This article presents a high order conservative flux optimization (CFO) finite element method for the elliptic diffusion equations. The numerical scheme is based on the classical Galerkin finite element method enhanced by a flux approximation on the boundary of a prescribed set of arbitrary control volumes (either the finite element partition itself or dual voronoi mesh, etc). The numerical approximations can be characterized as the solution of a constrained-minimization problem with constraints given by the flux conservation equations on each control volume. The discrete linear system is a ty…

This paper discusses the importance of high-frequency damping in high-order conservative finite-difference schemes for viscous terms in the Navier-Stokes equations. Investigating nonlinear instability encountered in a high-resolution viscous shock-tube simulation, we have discovered that a modification to the viscous scheme rather than the inviscid scheme resolves a problem with spurious oscillations around shocks. The modification introduces a term responsible for high-frequency damping that is missing in a conservative high-order viscous scheme. The importance of damping has been known for s…
Convection schemes are a large source of error in global weather and climate models, and modern resolutions are often too fine to parameterise convection but are still too coarse to fully resolve it. Recently, numerical solutions of multi-fluid equations have been proposed for a more flexible and consistent treatment of sub-grid scale convection, including net mass transport by convection and non-equilibrium dynamics. The technique involves splitting the atmosphere into multiple fluids. For example, the atmosphere could be divided into buoyant updrafts and stable regions. The fluids interact t…

A high-order quasi-conservative discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is proposed for the numerical simulation of compressible multi-component flows. A distinct feature of the method is a predictor-corrector strategy to define the grid velocity. A Lagrangian mesh is first computed based on the flow velocity and then used as an initial mesh in a moving mesh method (the moving mesh partial differential equation or MMPDE method ) to improve its quality. The fluid dynamic equations are discretized in the direct arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian framework using DG elements and the non-oscillatory kinetic …
