Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to investigate the electronic and magnetic structures of a two-dimensional (2D) monolayer Li$_{2}$N. It is shown that bulk Li$_{3}$N is a non-magnetic semiconductor. The non-spinpolarized DFT calculations show that $p$ electrons of N in 2D Li$_{2}$N form a narrow band at the Fermi energy $E_{\rm{F}}$ due to a low coordination number, and the density of states at the Fermi energy ($g(E_{\rm{F}}$)) is increased as compared with bulk Li$_{3}$N. The large $g(E_{\rm{F}}$) shows instability towards magnetism in Stoner's mean field model. The spin-polarized calculations reveal that 2D Li$_{2}$N is magnetic without intrinsic or impurity defects. The magnetic moment of 1.0\,$μ_{\rm{B}}$ in 2D Li$_{2}$N is mainly contributed by the $p_{z}$ electrons of N, and the band structure shows half-metallic behavior. {Dynamic instability in planar Li$_{2}$N monolayer is observed, but a buckled Li$_{2}$N monolayer is found to be dynamically stable.} The ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between the N atoms is also investigated to access the exchange field strength. {We found that planar (buckled) 2D Li$_{2}$N is a ferromagnetic material with Curie temperature $T_{c}$ of 161 (572) K.}
In this work, we investigated the electronic structure and the quantum capacitance of the functionalized MoS$_2$ monolayer. The functionalizations have been done by using different ad-atom adsorption on Mo$S_2$ monolayer. Density functional theory calculations are performed to obtain an accurate electronic structure of ad-atom doped MoS$_2$ monolayer with a varying degree of doping concentration. The quantum capacitance of the systems was subsequently estimated. A marked quantum capacitance above 200 $μ$F/cm$^2$ has been observed. Our calculations show that the quantum capacitance of MoS$_2$ m…
Recently, Bafekry et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 119, 142102 (2021)] reported their density functional theory (DFT) results on the elastic constants of a novel C6N7 monolayer. They predicted a very soft elastic modulus of 36.29 GPa for the C6N7 monolayer, which is remarkably low for carbon-nitride 2D lattices. Using DFT calculations, we predict a remarkably higher elastic modulus of 267 GPa for this monolayer. The maximum tensile strength is also predicted to be 20.5 GPa, revealing the outstanding mechanical properties of the C6N7 monolayer.
Isolated and full monolayer adsorption of various carboranethiol (C$_2$B$_{10}$H$_{12}$S) isomers on gold (111) surface have been investigated using both the standard and van der Waals density functional theoretical calculations. The effect of differing molecular dipole moment orientations on the low energy adlayer geometries, the binding characteristics and the electronic properties of the self-assembled monolayers of these isomers have been studied. Specifically, the binding energy and work function changes associated with different molecules show a correlation with their dipole moments. The…
Using density functional tight-binding theory, we investigated the elastic properties and deformation and failure behaviors of pristine and defective carbon-phosphide (CP) monolayers subjected to uniform uniaxial tensile strain along armchair (AC) and zigzag (ZZ) directions. Two variants of carbon phosphide were studied and two types of carbon and phosphorous vacancies (single and double) were considered. It was found that carbon monovacancies have the lowest formation energy, while phosphorous divacancies have the highest one in both CP allotropes. A strong mechanical anisotropy for carbon ph…
Two-dimension (2D) semiconductor materials have attracted much attention and research interest for their novel properties suitable for electronic and optoelectronic applications. In this paper, we have proposed an idea in new 2D materials design by using adjacent group elements to substitute half of the atoms in the primitive configurations to form isoelectronic compounds. We have successfully taken this idea on group V monolayers and have obtained many unexplored Group IV-V-VI monolayer compounds: P2SiS, As2SiS, As2GeSe, Sb2GeSe, Sb2SnTe, and Bi2SnTe. Relative formation energy calculations, p…
A long-standing controversy related to the dimer pattern formed by S atoms in methanethiol ($CH_{3}SH$) on the Au(111) surface has been resolved using density functional theory. For the first time, dimerization of methanethiol adsorbates on the Au(111) surface is established by computational modeling. For methylthiolate ($CH_{3}S$), it is shown that the S atoms do not dimerize at high coverage but reveal a dimer pattern at intermediate coverage. Molecular dynamics simulation at high coverage demonstrates that the observed dialkyl disulfide species are formed during the desorption process, and …
Ga2O3 is a wide-band-gap semiconductor of great interest for applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Two-dimensional (2D) Ga2O3 synthesized from top-down or bottom-up processes can reveal brand new heterogeneous structures and promising applications. In this paper, we study phase transitions among three low-energy stable Ga2O3 monolayer configurations using density functional theory and a newly developed machine-learning Gaussian approximation potential, together with solid-state nudged elastic band calculations. Kinetic minimum energy paths involving direct atomic jump as well as con…
The structure and electronic properties of single Cu atoms, copper monolayers and thin copper films on the polar oxygen and zinc terminated surfaces of ZnO are studied using periodic density-functional calculations. We find that the binding energy of Cu atoms sensitively depends on how charge neutrality of the polar surfaces is achieved. Bonding is very strong if the surfaces are stabilized by an electronic mechanism which leads to partially filled surface bands. As soon as the surface bands are filled (either by partial Cu coverage, by coadsorbates, or by the formation of defects), the bindin…
Alkali metal atoms (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs), dimers and (2$\times$2) monolayers on a graphite (0001) surface have been studied using density functional theory, pseudopotentials, and a periodic substrate. The adatoms bind at the hollow site (graphite hexagon), with Li lying closest to (1.84 Å) and Cs farthest (3.75 Å) from the surface. The adsorption energies range between $0.55-1.21$ eV, and the energy ordering of the alkali adatoms is Li$>$Cs$\ge$Rb$\ge$K$>$Na. The small diffusion barriers (0.02-0.21 eV for the C-C bridge) decrease as the atom size increases, indicating a flat potential energy sur…
The optical spectra of two-dimensional (2D) periodic systems provide a challenge for time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) because of the large excitonic effects in these materials. In this work we explore how accurately these spectra can be described within a pure Kohn-Sham time-dependent density-functional framework, i.e., a framework in which no theory beyond Kohn-Sham density-functional theory, such as $GW$, is required to correct the Kohn-Sham gap. To achieve this goal we adapted a recent approach we developed for the optical spectra of 3D systems [Cavo, Berger, Romaniello, Phy…
Density functional theory (DFT) is widely used to study defects in monolayer graphene with a view to applications ranging from water filtration to electronics to investigation of radiation damage in graphite moderators. To assess the accuracy of DFT in such applications, we report diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations of the formation energies of some common and important point defects in monolayer graphene: monovacancies, Stone-Wales defects, and silicon substitutions. We find that standard DFT methods underestimate monovacancy formation energies by around 1 eV. The disagreement be…
Electron-crystal and phonon-glass are regarded as two essential factors for ideal thermoelectric materials, which require both an enhanced electronic transport and a depressed phononic transport. These two characteristics usually can not coexist in complete bulk semiconductors because of the strong interaction between electrons and phonons. Introducing nanostructures into bulk thermoelectric materials has long been applying to allow for diverse phonon scattering mechanisms to reduce lattice thermal conductivity while keeping the electrical conductivity intact. However, some two-dimensional mat…
The absolute integrated intensity of the single-phonon Raman peak at 1580 cm^{-1} is calculated for a clean graphene monolayer. The resulting intensity is determined by the trigonal warping of the electronic bands and the anisotropy of the electron-phonon coupling, and is proportional to the second power of the excitation frequency. The main contribution to the process comes from the intermediate electron-hole states with typical energies of the order of the excitation frequency, contrary to what has been reported earlier. This occurs because of strong cancellations between different terms of …
In a first-principles study based on many-body perturbation theory, we analyze the optical excitations of azobenzene-functionalized SAMs with increasing packing density and different terminations, considering for comparison the corresponding gas-phase molecules and dimers. The intermolecular coupling increases with the density of the chromophores independently of the functional groups. The intense $π\rightarrowπ^*$ resonance that triggers photo-isomerization is present in the spectra of isolated dimers and diluted SAMs, but it is almost completely washed out in tightly packed architectures. In…
Monolayers of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) can in principle be identified by a Raman signature, consisting of an upshift in the frequency of the E2g vibrational mode with respect to the bulk value, but the origin of this shift (intrinsic or support-induced) is still debated. Herein we use density functional theory calculations to investigate whether there is an intrinsic Raman shift in the h-BN monolayer in comparison with the bulk. There is universal agreement among all tested functionals in predicting the magnitude of the frequency shift upon a variation in the in-plane cell parameter. It …
We investigate the optical property of monolayer and layered BiI$_3$ and reveal the presence of exciton only in the monolayer crystal. We evaluate the energy spectrum of a dielectric function by using time-dependent density functional theory. Bulk crystal of BiI$_3$ is an atomic layered semiconductor with the band gap corresponding to the frequency of visible light. The numerical result for the bulk crystal is confirmed to be consistent with the previous experimental results and it does not depend on the number of layers except the monolayer. We reveal the excitons appearing below the resonant…
wo-dimensional (2D) materials unique properties and their promising applications in post-silicon microelectronics have attracted significant attention in the past decade. Recently, ferromagnetic order with out-of-plane easy axis in a monolayer of CrI3 has been observed and reported, with a Curie temperature of 45 K. Here we study, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, how hydrogen and oxygen adsorption affects the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of a CrI3 monolayer. Our results show that while the structure remains almost unchanged by the adsorption of hydrogen, a…
We utilize density functional theory to calculate the edge energy and edge stress for monolayer MoS$_{2}$ nanoribbons. In contrast to previous reports for graphene, for both armchair and zigzag chiralities, the edge stresses for MoS$_{2}$ nanoribbons are found to be tensile, indicating that their lowest energy configuration is one of compression in which Mo-S bond lengths are shorter than those in a bulk, periodic MoS$_{2}$ monolayer. The edge energy and edge stress is found to converge for both chiralities for nanoribbon widths larger than about 1 nm.
We present the G$_0$W$_0$ band structure, core levels, and deformation potential of monolayer FeSe in the paramagnetic phase based on a starting mean field of the Kohn Sham density functional theory (DFT) with the PBE functional. We find the GW correction increases the bandwidth of the states forming the $M$ pocket near the Fermi energy, while leaving the $Γ$ pocket roughly unchanged. We then compare the G$_0$W$_0$ quasiparticle band energies with the band structure from a simple empirical +A approach, which was recently proposed to capture the renormalization of the electron-phonon interactio…
Elemental monolayers of the group 14 with a buckled honeycomb structure, namely silicene, germanene, stanene, and plumbene, are known to demonstrate a spin splitting as a result of an electric field parallel to their high symmetry axis which is capable of tuning their topological phase between a quantum spin Hall insulator and an ordinary band insulator. We perform first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory to quantify the spin-dependent band gaps and the spin splitting as a function of the applied electric field and extract the main coefficients of the invariant Hami…
Density functional theory calculations are carried out to study the electronic and topological properties of $M$P$X_3$ ($M$ = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and $X$ = S, Se) monolayers in the ferromagnetic (FM) metastable magnetic state. We find that FM MnPSe$_3$ monolayers host topological semimetal signatures that are gapped out when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is included. These findings are supported by explicit calculations of the Berry curvature and the Chern number. The choice of the Hubbard-$U$ parameter to describe the $d$-electrons is thoroughly discussed, as well as the influence of using a hybrid-f…
We present thermoelectric properties of Be$_2$C monolayer based on density functional theory and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. Electronic structure calculations predict this material as a semiconductor with a direct bandgap of 2.0 eV computed using Gaussian-attenuating Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (Gau-PBE) hybrid functional. The Gau-PBE band structure is used to compute transport properties by solving the Boltzmann transport equation under the constant relaxation time approximation. In this work, we have explicitly determined the relaxation time by studying the electron-phonon interact…
The structural stability and electronic states of GaSe monolayer with trigonal-antiprismatic (AP) structure, which is a recently discovered new polymorph, were studied by first-principles calculations. The AP phase GaSe monolayer was found stable, and the differences in energy and lattice constant were small when compared to those calculated for a GaSe monolayer with conventional trigonal-prismatic (P) structure which was found to be the ground state. Moreover, it was revealed that the relative stability of P phase and AP phase GaSe monolayers reverses under tensile strain. These calculation r…
Monolayer Mo$_2$C is a new member of two-dimensional materials. Here the electronic structure and lattice dynamics of monolayer Mo$_2$C are calculated. According to the electron-phonon interaction, it is predicted that monolayer Mo$_2$C could be a quasi-two-dimensional superconductor and the effects of functional-groups are crucially important considering its unsaturated surface. Despite the suppressed superconductivity by chalcogen adsorption, our most interesting prediction is that the electron-phonon interaction of monolayer Mo$_2$C can be greatly enhanced by bromine absorbtion, suggesting …
Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with direct and modest bandgap and ultrahigh carrier mobility are highly desired functional materials for nanoelectronic applications. Herein, we predict that monolayer CaP3 is a new 2D functional material that possesses not only a direct bandgap of 1.15 eV (based on HSE06 computation), and also a very high electron mobility up to 19930 cm2 V-1 s-1, comparable to that of monolayer phosphorene. More remarkably, contrary to the bilayer phosphorene which possesses dramatically reduced carrier mobility compared to its monolayer counterpart, CaP3 bilayer possesse…
Density functional theory simulations with conventional (PBE) and hybrid (HSE06) functionals were performed to investigate the structural and electronic properties of MXene monolayers, \ce{Ti_{n+1}C_n} and \ce{Ti_{n+1}N_n} ($n$ = 1--9) with surfaces terminated by O, F, H, and OH groups. We find that PBE and HSE06 give similar results. Without functional groups, MXenes have magnetically ordered ground states. All the studied materials are metallic except for \ce{Ti_{2}CO_{2}}, which we predict to be semiconducting. The calculated density of states at the Fermi level of the thicker MXenes ($n$ $…
The surface stabilized MnO(100)-like monolayer, characterised by a regular c(4x2) distribution of Mn vacancies, is studied by hybrid functionals and discussed in the light of available scanning tunneling microscopy and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy data. We show that the use of hybrid functionals is crucial to account for the intermingled nature of magnetic ineractions, electron localization, structural distortions and surface phonons. The proposed Pd(100) supported Mn3O4 structure is excellently compatible with the experiments previously reported in literature.
We perform first-principles calculations of electronic and dielectric properties of bismuthene functionalized with small ligands using first-principle calculations. We show that all functionalized structures have topological insulating (TI) behavior with a sizeable gap by calculating the Z$_2$ topological invariant. Furthermore the adsorption of all groups induce a quasi-planar structure to the initially pristine bismuthene structure. Finally we show that the dielectric properties show a large anisotropy with two main in plane absorption peaks.

By a combined study with first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we theoretically investigate the electronic properties of monolayer MoSi$_2$N$_4$. While the spin-orbital coupling results in bands splitting, the horizontal mirror symmetry locks the spin polarization along z-direction. In addition, a three-band tight-binding model is constructed to describe the low-energy quasi-particle states of monolayer MoSi$_2$N$_4$, which can be generalized to strained MoSi$_2$N$_4$ and its derivatives. The calculations using the tight-binding model show an undamped $\sqrt{q}$-dependent plasmo…
First-principle calculations with different exchange-correlation functionals, including LDA, PBE and vdW-DF functional in form of optB88-vdW, have been performed to investigate the electronic and elastic properties of two dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDCs) with the formula of MX$_2$(M=Mo,W; X=O,S,Se,Te) in both monolayer and bilayer structures. The calculated band structures show a direct band gap for monolayer TMDCs at the K point except for MoO$_2$ and WO$_2$. When the monolayers are stacked into bilayer, the reduced indirect band gaps are found except for bilayer WTe$_2$, i…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials may have potential applications in thermoelectric devices. In this work, we systematically investigate the thermoelectric properties of orthorhombic group IV-VI monolayers $\mathrm{AB}$ (A=Ge and Sn; B=S and Se) by the first-principles calculations and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is included to investigate their electronic transport, which produces observable effects on power factor, especially for n-type doping. According to calculated $ZT$, the four monolayers exhibit diverse anisotropic thermoelectric properties, alt…
We present first-principles many-body calculations of the dielectric constant, quasiparticle band structure, and optical absorption spectrum of monolayer MoS$_2$ using a supercell approach. As the separation between the periodically repeated layers is increased, the dielectric function of the layer develops a strong $q$ dependence around $q=0$. This implies that denser $k$-point grids are required to converge the band gap and exciton binding energies when large supercells are used. In the limit of infinite layer separation, here obtained using a truncated Coulomb interaction, a $45\times45$ $k…
Recently, two-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductors have been an important class of materials for many potential applications in spintronic devices. Based on density functional theory, we systematically explore the magnetic and electronic properties of CrGeS$_3$ with the monolayer structures. The comparison of total energy between different magnetic states ensures the ferromagnetic ground state of monolayer CrGeS$_3$. It is also shown that ferromagnetic and semiconducting properties are exhibited in monolayer CrGeS$_3$ with the magnetic moment of 3 $μ_{B}$ for each Cr atom, donated mainly b…
First-principles calculations on the mechanical, electronic, magnetic and optical properties of two-dimensional Janus Cr$_2$TeX (X= P, As, Sb) monolayers
The quasiparticle (QP) band structures of both strainless and strained monolayer MoS$_{2}$ are investigated using more accurate many body perturbation \emph{GW} theory and maximally localized Wannier functions (MLWFs) approach. By solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) including excitonic effects on top of the partially self-consistent \emph{GW$_{0}$} (sc\emph{GW$_{0}$}) calculation, the predicted optical gap magnitude is in a good agreement with available experimental data. With increasing strain, the exciton binding energy is nearly unchanged, while optical gap is reduced significantly. T…
Monolayers of group VA elements have attracted great attention with the rising of black phosphorus. Here, we derive a simple tight-binding model for monolayer grey arsenic, referred as arsenene (ML-As), based on the first-principles calculations within the partially self-consistent GW0 approach. The resulting band structure derived from the six p-like orbitals coincides with the quasi-particle energy from GW0 calculations with a high accuracy. In the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, ML-As exhibits two sets of Landau levels linear with respect to the magnetic field and level index. O…
A simple band model using higher order non-parabolic effect was adopted for single layer molybdenum tungsten alloy disulfide (i.e., $\mathrm{Mo}_{1-x}\mathrm{W}_x\mathrm{S}_2$). The first-principles method considering $2\times2$ supercell was used to study band structure of single layer alloy $\mathrm{Mo}_{1-x}\mathrm{W}_x\mathrm{S}_2$ and a simple band (i.e., effective mass approximation model, EMA) model with higher order non-parabolic effect was used to fit the first-principle band structures in order to calculate corresponding the hole mobility. In addition, we investigate the alloy scatte…
We demonstrate how self-assembled monolayers of aromatic molecules on copper substrates can be converted into high-quality single-layer graphene using low-energy electron irradiation and subsequent annealing. We characterize this two-dimensional solid state transformation on the atomic scale and study the physical and chemical properties of the formed graphene sheets by complementary microscopic and spectroscopic techniques and by electrical transport measurements. As substrates we successfully use Cu(111) single crystals and the technologically relevant polycrystalline copper foils.
The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of VSSe, VSeTe, VSTe monolayers in both 2H and 1T phases are investigated via first-principles calculations. The 2H phase is energetically favorable in VSSe and VSeTe, whereas the 1T phase is lower in energy in VSTe. For V-based Janus monolayers in the 2H phase, calculations of the magnetic anisotropy show an easy-plane for the magnetic moment. As such, they should not exhibit a ferromagnetic phase transition, but instead, a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. A classical XY model with nearest-neighbor coupling estimates critica…
First-principles phonon calculations have been widely performed for studying vibrational properties of condensed matter, where the dynamical matrix is commonly constructed via supercell force-constant calculations or the linear response approach. With different manners, a supercell can be introduced in both methods. Unless the supercell is large enough, the interpolated phonon property highly depends on the shape and size of the supercell and the imposed periodicity could give unphysical results that can be easily overlooked. Along this line, the concept of partition of force constants is disc…
Two-dimensional (2D) Janus transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a new class of materials with unique physical properties. However, the carrier mobility of most Janus TMDs calculated by deformation potential theory (DPT) is not reliable due to the unconsidered part of lattice scattering. In this work, we propose a new method of Born effective charge (BEC) to calculate the carrier mobility of Janus TMDs by including the important factors that neglected in the DPT. The BEC could be used in the calculation of both pure and defective Janus TMDs by employing density functional perturbation th…
Monolayer 1T-VSe2 has been reported as a room-temperature ferromagnet. In this work, by using first-principles calculations, we unveil that the ferromagnetism in monolayer 1T-VSe2 is originated from its intrinsic huge Stoner instability enhanced by the confinement effect, which can eliminate the interlayer coupling, and lead to a drastic increase of the density of states at the Fermi level due to the presence of Van Hove singularity. Our calculations also demonstrate that the Stoner instability is very sensitive to the interlayer distance. These results provide a useful route to modulate the n…
Recently a stable monolayer of antimony in buckled honeycomb structure called antimonene was successfully grown on 3D topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Sb$_2$Te$_3$, which displays semiconducting properties. By first principle calculations, we systematically investigate the phononic, electronic and optical properties of $α-$ and $β-$ allotropes of monolayer arsenene/antimonene. We investigate the dynamical stabilities of these four materials by considering the phonon dispersions. The obtained electronic structures reveal the direct band gap of monolayer $α-$As/Sb and indirect band gap of …
We present a systematic study of the variables affecting the electronic and optical properties of two-dimensional(2D) crystals within \textit{ab initio} GW and GW plus Bethe Salpeter Equation (GW-BSE) calculations. As a prototypical 2D transition metal dichalcogenide material, we focus our study on monolayer MoS${}_2$. We find that the reported variations in GW-BSE results in the literature for monolayer MoS${}_2$ and related systems arise from different treatments of the long-range Coulomb interaction in supercell calculations and convergence of k-grid sampling and cutoffs for various quantit…
In this work, we report on the exciton radiative lifetimes of graphitic carbon nitride monolayers in the triazine- (gC$_3$N$_4$-t) and heptazine-based (gC$_3$N$_4$-h) forms, as obtained by means of ground- plus excited-state ab initio calculations. By analysing the exciton fine structure, we highlight the presence of dark states and show that the photo-generated electron-hole pairs in gC$_3$N$_4$-h are remarkably long-lived, with an effective radiative lifetime of 260 ns. This fosters the employment of gC$_3$N$_4$-h in photocatalysis and makes it attractive for the emerging field of exciton de…
We report diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) and many-body $GW$ calculations of the electronic band gaps of monolayer and bulk hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We find the monolayer band gap to be indirect. $GW$ predicts much smaller quasiparticle gaps at both the single-shot $G_0W_0$ and the partially self-consistent $GW_0$ levels. In contrast, solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation on top of the $GW_0$ calculation yields an exciton binding energy for the direct exciton at the $K$ point in close agreement with the DMC value. Vibrational renormalization of the electronic band gap is found to be si…
We report the transport properties of monolayer and bilayer graphene from first principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory (BTE). Our resistivity studies on monolayer graphene show Bloch-Gr${\rm \ddot{u}}$neisen behavior in a certain range of chemical potentials. By substituting boron nitride in place of a carbon dimer of graphene, we predict a twofold increase in the Seebeck coefficient. A similar increase in the Seebeck coefficient for bilayer graphene under the influence of a small electric field $\sim 0.3$ eV has been observed in our calculations. Graphene with impurities shows…
A molecular solid C$_{50}$Cl$_{10}$ with possible crystalline structures, including the hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) phase, the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase, and a hexagonal monolayer, is predicted in terms of first-principles calculation within the density functional theory. The stable structures are determined from the total-energy calculations, where the hcp phase is uncovered more stable than the fcc phase and the hexagonal monolayer in energy per molecule. The energy bands and density of states for hcp and fcc C$_{50}$Cl$_{10}$ are presented. The results show that C$_{50}$Cl% $_{10}$ m…
We present a microscopic theory of neutral excitons and charged excitons (trions) in monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, including molybdenum disulfide. Our theory is based on an effective mass model of excitons and trions, parametrized by ab initio calculations and incorporating a proper treatment of screening in two dimensions. The calculated exciton binding energies are in good agreement with high-level many-body computations based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Furthermore, our calculations for the more complex trion species compare very favorably with recent experimental meas…
A novel crystal configuration of sandwiched S-Mo-Se structure (Janus SMoSe) at the monolayer limit has been synthesized and carefully characterized in this work. By controlled sulfurization of monolayer MoSe2 the top layer of selenium atoms are substituted by sulfur atoms while the bottom selenium layer remains intact. The peculiar structure of this new material is systematically investigated by Raman, photoluminescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and confirmed by transmission-electron microscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. Density-functional theory calculation…
We perform ab initio calculations of the coupling between electrons and small-momentum polar-optical phonons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides of the 2H type: MoS2, MoSe2, MoTe2, WS2, and WSe2. The so-called Fröhlich interaction is fundamentally affected by the dimensionality of the system. In a plane-wave framework with periodic boundary conditions, this coupling is affected by the spurious interaction between the 2D material and its periodic images. To overcome this, we perform density functional perturbation theory calculations with a truncated Coulomb interaction in the out-of-…
