We describe a quantum trajectories technique for the unraveling of the quantum adiabatic master equation in Lindblad form. By evolving a complex state vector of dimension $N$ instead of a complex density matrix of dimension $N^2$, simulations of larger system sizes become feasible. The cost of running many trajectories, which is required to recover the master equation evolution, can be minimized by running the trajectories in parallel, making this method suitable for high performance computing clusters. In general, the trajectories method can provide up to a factor $N$ advantage over directly solving the master equation. In special cases where only the expectation values of certain observables are desired, an advantage of up to a factor $N^2$ is possible. We test the method by demonstrating agreement with direct solution of the quantum adiabatic master equation for $8$-qubit quantum annealing examples. We also apply the quantum trajectories method to a $16$-qubit example originally introduced to demonstrate the role of tunneling in quantum annealing, which is significantly more time consuming to solve directly using the master equation. The quantum trajectories method provides insight into individual quantum jump trajectories and their statistics, thus shedding light on open system quantum adiabatic evolution beyond the master equation.
Relying only on first principles, we derive a master equation of Lindblad form generally applicable for adiabatically time dependent systems. Our analysis shows that the much debated secular approximation can be valid for slowly time dependent Hamiltonians when performed in an appropriate basis. We apply our approach to the well known Landau-Zener problem where we find that adiabaticity is improved by coupling to a low temperature environment.
We construct a quantum Markovian Master equation for a driven system coupled to a thermal bath. The derivation utilizes an explicit solution of the propagator of the driven system. This enables the validity of the Master equation to be extended beyond the adiabatic limit. The Non-Adiabatic Master Equation (NAME) is derived employing the weak system-bath coupling limit. The NAME is valid when a separation of timescales exists between the bath dynamics and the external driving. In contrast to the adiabatic Master equation, the NAME leads to coupled equations of motion for the population and cohe…
A master equation approach to the study of environmental effects in the adiabatic population transfer in three-state systems is presented. A systematic comparison with the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach [N. V. Vitanov and S. Stenholm, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 56}, 1463 (1997)] shows that in the weak coupling limit the two treatments lead to essentially the same results. Instead, in the strong damping limit the predictions are quite different: in particular the counterintuitive sequences in the STIRAP scheme turn out to be much more efficient than expected before. This point is explained in terms …
We develop from first principles Markovian master equations suited for studying the time evolution of a system evolving adiabatically while coupled weakly to a thermal bath. We derive two sets of equations in the adiabatic limit, one using the rotating wave (secular) approximation that results in a master equation in Lindblad form, the other without the rotating wave approximation but not in Lindblad form. The two equations make markedly different predictions depending on whether or not the Lamb shift is included. Our analysis keeps track of the various time- and energy-scales associated with …
We introduce an alternative way to derive the generalized form of the master equation recently presented by J. P. Pekola et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 030401 (2010)] for an adiabatically steered two-level quantum system interacting with a Markovian environment. The original derivation employed the effective Hamiltonian in the adiabatic basis with the standard interaction picture approach but without the usual secular approximation. Our approach is based on utilizing a master equation for a non-steered system in the first super-adiabatic basis. It is potentially efficient in obtaining higher-or…
For adiabatically and periodically manipulated dissipative quantum systems we derive, using Floquet theory, a simple Markovian master equation. Contrary to some previous works we explicitly take into account the time dependence of the Hamiltonian and, therefore, obtain a master equation with a time-dependent dissipative part. We illustrate our theory with two examples and compare our results with the previously proposed master equations. In particular, we consider the problem of Cooper pair pumping and demonstrate the inadequacy of the secular (rotating wave) approximation when calculating the…
By introducing a temporal change timescale $τ_{\text{A}}(t)$ for the time-dependent system Hamiltonian, a general formulation of the Markovian quantum master equation is given to go well beyond the adiabatic regime. In appropriate situations, the framework is well justified even if $τ_{\text{A}}(t)$ is faster than the decay timescale of the bath correlation function. An application to the dissipative Landau-Zener model demonstrates this general result. The findings are applicable to a wide range of fields, providing a basis for quantum control beyond the adiabatic regime.
Adiabatic quantum computation employs a slow change of a time-dependent control function (or functions) to interpolate between an initial and final Hamiltonian, which helps to keep the system in the instantaneous ground state. When the evolution time is finite, the degree of adiabaticity (quantified in this work as the average ground-state population during evolution) depends on the particulars of a dynamic trajectory associated with a given set of control functions. We use quantum optimal control theory with a composite objective functional to numerically search for controls that achieve the …
The interaction between matter and squeezed light has mostly been treated within the approximation that the field correlation time is small. Methods for treating squeezed light with more general correlations currently involve explicitly modeling the systems producing the light. We develop a general purpose input-output theory for a particular form of narrowband squeezed light -- a squeezed wave-packet mode -- that only cares about the statistics of the squeezed field and the shape of the wave packet. This formalism allows us to derive the input-output relations and the master equation. We also…
We consider an open quantum system described by a Lindblad-type master equation with two times-scales. The fast time-scale is strongly dissipative and drives the system towards a low-dimensional decoherence-free space. To perform the adiabatic elimination of this fast relaxation, we propose a geometric asymptotic expansion based on the small positive parameter describing the time-scale separation. This expansion exploits geometric singular perturbation theory and center-manifold techniques. We conjecture that, at any order, it provides an effective slow Lindblad master equation and a completel…
We present a detailed derivation of the master equation describing a general time-dependent quantum system with classical Poisson white noise and outline its various properties. We discuss the limiting cases of Poisson white noise and provide approximations for the different noise strength regimes. We show that using the eigenstates of the noise superoperator as a basis can be a useful way of expressing the master equation. Using this we simulate various settings to illustrate different effects of Poisson noise. In particular, we show a dip in the fidelity as a function of noise strength where…
We consider a finite quantum system under slow driving and weakly coupled to thermal reservoirs at different temperatures. We present a systematic derivation of the quantum master equation for the density matrix and the out-of-time-order correlators. We start from the microscopic Hamiltonian and we formulate the equations ruling the dynamics of these quantities by recourse to the Schwinger-Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function formalism, performing a perturbative expansion in the coupling between the system and the reservoirs. We focus on the adiabatic dynamics, which corresponds to conside…
We characterize the pointer states generated by the master equation of quantum Brownian motion and derive stochastic equations for the dynamics of their trajectories in phase space. Our method is based on a Poissonian unraveling of the master equation whose deterministic part exhibits soliton-like solutions that can be identified with the pointer states. In the semiclassical limit, their phase space trajectories turn into those of classical diffusion, yielding a clear picture of the induced quantum- classical transition.
We derive a master equation from the exact stochastic Liouville von-Neumann (SLN) equation \cite{stockburger2002,wallsbook}. The latter depends on two correlated noises and describes exactly the dynamics of an oscillator (which can be either harmonic or present an anharmonicity) coupled to an environment at thermal equilibrium. The newly derived master equation is obtained by performing analytically the average over different noise trajectories. It is found to have a complex hierarchical structure that might be helpful to explain the convergence problems occurring when performing numerically t…
We provide a rigorous generalization of the quantum adiabatic theorem for open systems described by a Markovian master equation with time-dependent Liouvillian $\mathcal{L}(t)$. We focus on the finite system case relevant for adiabatic quantum computing and quantum annealing. Adiabaticity is defined in terms of closeness to the instantaneous steady state. While the general result is conceptually similar to the closed system case, there are important differences. Namely, a system initialized in the zero-eigenvalue eigenspace of $\mathcal{L}(t)$ will remain in this eigenspace with a deviation th…
A general approach for transitionless quantum driving in open quantum systems is introduced. Under the assumption of adiabatic evolution for time-local master equations, we derive the generalized transitionless Lindbladian required to implement a shortcut to adiabaticity in an open system scenario. The general counter-diabatic Lindbladian obtained accounts for a phase freedom, which translates into a set of free parameters throughout the dynamics. We then discuss how our generalized approach allows us to recover the transitionless Lindbladian introduced by G. Vacanti et al. [New J. Phys. 16, 0…
We study the effect of Markovian environmental noise on the dynamics of a two-level quantum system which is steered adiabatically by an external driving field. We express the master equation taking consistently into account all the contributions to the lowest non-vanishing order in the coupling to the Markovian environment. We study the master equation numerically and analytically and we find that, in the adiabatic limit, a zero-temperature environment does not affect the ground state evolution. As a physical application, we discuss extensively how the environment affects Cooper pair pumping. …
Shortcuts to adiabaticity have been proposed to speed up the "slow" adiabatic transport of an atom or a wave packet of atoms. However, the freedom of the inverse engineering approach with appropriate boundary conditions provides thousands of trap trajectories for different purposes, for example, time and energy minimizations. In this paper, we propose trigonometric protocols for fast and robust atomic transport, taking into account cubic or quartic anharmonicities. The numerical results have illustrated that such trigonometric protocols, particular cosine ansatz, is more robust and the corresp…
The significance of topological phases has been widely recognized in the community of condensed matter physics. The well controllable quantum systems provide an artificial platform to probe and engineer various topological phases. The adiabatic trajectory of a quantum state describes the change of the bulk Bloch eigenstates with the momentum, and this adiabatic simulation method is however practically limited due to quantum dissipation. Here we apply the `shortcut to adiabaticity' (STA) protocol to realize fast adiabatic evolutions in the system of a superconducting phase qubit. The resulting …
Many areas of physics rely upon adiabatic state transfer protocols, allowing a quantum state to be moved between different physical systems for storage and retrieval or state manipulation. However, these state-transfer protocols suffer from dephasing and dissipation. In this thesis we go beyond the standard open-systems treatment of quantum dissipation allowing us to consider non-Markovian environments. We use adiabatic perturbation theory in order to give analytic descriptions for various quantum state-transfer protocols. The leading-order corrections will give rise to additional terms adding…
Radical-ion-pair reactions, central in photosynthesis and the avian magnetic compass mechanism, have recently shown to be a paradigm system for applying quantum information science in a biochemical setting. The fundamental quantum master equation describing radical-ion-pair reactions is still under debate. We here use quantum retrodiction to produce a rigorous refinement of the theory put forward in Phys. Rev. E {\bf 83}, 056118 (2011). We also provide a rigorous analysis of the measure of singlet-triplet coherence required for deriving the radical-pair master equation. A Monte-Carlo simulatio…

Every open-system dynamics can be associated to infinitely many stochastic pictures, called unravelings, which have proved to be extremely useful in several contexts, both from the conceptual and the practical point of view. Here, focusing on quantum-jump unravelings, we demonstrate that there exists inherent freedom in how to assign the terms of the underlying master equation to the deterministic and jump parts of the stochastic description, which leads to a number of qualitatively different unravelings. As relevant examples, we show that a fixed basis of post-jump states can be selected unde…
We introduce an adiabatic quantum state transfer scheme in a non-uniform coupled triple-quantum-dot system. By adiabatically varying the external gate voltage applied on the sender and receiver, the electron can be transferred between them with high fidelity. By numerically solving the master equation for a system with always-on interaction, it is indicated that the transfer fidelity depends on the ration between the peak voltage and the maximum coupling constants. The effect of coupling mismatch on the transfer fidelity is also investigated and it is shown that there is a relatively large tol…
A quantum memory or information processing device is subject to disturbance from its surrounding environment or inevitable leakage due to its contact with other systems. To tackle these problems, several control protocols have been proposed for quantum memory or storage. Among them, the fast-signal control or dynamical decoupling based on external pulse sequences provides a prevailing strategy aimed at suppressing decoherence and preventing the target systems from the leakage or diffusion process. In this paper, we review the applications of this protocol in protecting quantum memory under the…
Steering a quantum harmonic oscillator state along cyclic trajectories leads to a path-dependent geometric phase. Here we describe an experiment observing this geometric phase in an electronic harmonic oscillator. We use a superconducting qubit as a non-linear probe of the phase, otherwise unobservable due to the linearity of the oscillator. Our results demonstrate that the geometric phase is, for a variety of cyclic trajectories, proportional to the area enclosed in the quadrature plane. At the transition to the non-adiabatic regime, we study corrections to the phase and dephasing of the qubi…
When measuring a complex quantum system, we are often interested in only a few degrees of freedom-the plant, while the rest of them are collected as auxiliary modes-the bath. The bath can have finite memory (non-Markovian), and simply ignoring its dynamics, i.e., adiabatically eliminating it, will prevent us from predicting the true quantum behavior of the plant. We generalize the technique introduced by Strunz et. al. [Phys. Rev. Lett 82, 1801 (1999)], and develop a formalism that allows us to eliminate the bath non-adiabatically in continuous quantum measurements, and obtain a non-Markovian …
We exploit a microscopically derived master equation for the study of STIRAP in the presence of decay from the auxiliary level toward the initial and final state, and compare our results with the predictions obtained from a phenomenological model previously used [P. A. Ivanov, N. V. Vitanov, and K. Bergmann, Phys. Rev. A 72, 053412 (2005)]. It is shown that our approach predicts a much higher efficiency. The effects of temperature are also taken into account, proving that in b-STIRAP thermal pumping can increase the efficiency of the population transfer.
The adiabatic approximation exhibits wide applicability in quantum mechanics, providing a simple approach for nontransitional dynamics in quantum systems governed by slowly varying time-dependent Hamiltonians. However, the standard adiabatic theorem is specifically derived for closed quantum systems. In a realistic open system scenario, the inevitable system-reservoir interaction must be taken into account, which strongly impacts the generalization of the adiabatic behavior. In this paper, we introduce sufficient conditions for the adiabatic approximation in open quantum systems. These conditi…
Solution of free particle quantum master equation with spatial decoherence can be unravelled into stochastic quantum trajectories in many ways. The first example, published in 1985, proposed a piecewise deterministic jump process for the wave function. While alternative unravellings, diffusive ones in particular, proved to be tractable analytically, the jump process 1985, also called orthojump, allows for few analytic results, it needs numeric methods as well. Here we prove that, similarly to diffusive unravellings, it is localizing the quantum state.
We derive stochastic master equations for a quantum system interacting with a Bose field prepared in a superposition of continuous-mode coherent states. To determine a conditional evolution of the quantum system we use a collision model with an environment given as an infinite chain of not interacting between themselves qubits prepared initially in a entangled state being a discrete analogue of a superposition of coherent states of the Bose field. The elements of the environment chain interact with the quantum system in turn one by one and they are subsequently measured. We determine a conditi…
The adiabatic theorem and "shortcuts to adiabaticity" for the adiabatic dynamics of time-dependent decoherence-free subspaces are explored in this paper. Starting from the definition of the dynamical stable decoherence-free subspaces, we show that, under a compact adiabatic condition, the quantum state follows time-dependent decoherence-free subspaces (the adiabatic decoherence free subspaces) into the target subspace with extremely high purity, even though the dynamics of the quantum system may be non-adiabatic. The adiabatic condition mentioned in the adiabatic theorem is very similar with t…
We derive stochastic master equation for a quantum system interacting with an environment prepared in a continuous-mode $N$-photon state. To determine the conditional evolution of the quantum system depending on continuous in time measurements of the output field the model of repeated interactions and measurements is applied. The environment is defined as an infinite chain of harmonic oscillators which do not interact between themselves and they are prepared initially in an entangled state being a discrete analogue of a continuous-mode $N$-photon state. We provide not only the quantum trajecto…
We derive quantum trajectories (also known as stochastic master equations) that describe an arbitrary quantum system probed by a propagating wave packet of light prepared in a continuous-mode Fock state. We consider three detection schemes of the output light: photon counting, homodyne detection, and heterodyne detection. We generalize to input field states that are superpositions and or mixtures of Fock states and illustrate the formalism with several examples.
We study quantum dynamics of Grover's adiabatic search algorithm with the equivalent two-level system. Its adiabatic and non-adiabatic evolutions are visualized as trajectories of Bloch vectors on a Bloch sphere. We find the change in the non-adiabatic transition probability from exponential decay for short running time to inverse-square decay for long running time. The size dependence of the critical running time is expressed in terms of Lambert $W$ function. The transitionless driving Hamiltonian is obtained to make a quantum state follow the adiabatic path. We demonstrate that a constant Ha…
