The shooting and finite-difference method are both numeric methods that approximate the solution of a BVP to a given accuracy. In this report both methods were implemented in Matlab and compared to each other on a BVP found in the context of light propagation in nonlinear dielectrics. It was observed that the finite-difference method is numerically more stable and converges faster than the shooting method.
This article proposes new strategies for solving two-point Fractional order Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems(FN-BVPs) with Robin Boundary Conditions(RBCs). In the new numerical schemes, a two-point FNBVP is transformed into a system of Fractional order Initial Value Problems(FIVPs) with unknown Initial Conditions(ICs). To approximate ICs in the system of FIVPs, we develop nonlinear shooting methods based on Newton's method and Halley's method using the RBC at the right end point. To deal with FIVPs in a system, we mainly employ High-order Predictor-Corrector Methods(HPCMs) with linear interpo…
In a transformation method, the numerical solution of a given boundary value problem is obtained by solving one or more related initial value problems. Therefore, a transformation method, like a shooting method, is an initial value method. The main difference between a transformation and a shooting method is that the former is conceived and derive its formulation from the scaling invariance theory. This paper is concerned with the application of the iterative transformation method to several problems in the boundary layer theory. The iterative method is an extension of the T{ö}pfer's non-itera…
Wave propagation problems are notoriously difficult to solve. Time-harmonic problems are especially challenging in mid and high frequency regimes. The main reason is the oscillatory nature of solutions, meaning that the number of degrees of freedom after discretisation increases drastically with the wave number, giving rise to large complex-valued problems to solve. Additional difficulties occur when the problem is defined in a highly heterogeneous medium, as is often the case in realistic physical applications. For time-discretised problems of Maxwell type, the main challenge remains the sign…
We study the time-sliced thawed Gaussian propagation method, which was recently proposed for solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We introduce a triplet of quadrature-based analysis, synthesis and re-initialization operators to give a rigorous mathematical formulation of the method. Further, we derive combined error bounds for the discretization of the wave packet transform and the time-propagation of the thawed Gaussian basis functions. Numerical experiments in 1D illustrate the theoretical results.
In this work, the hybrid intelligent computing method, which combines efficient Jaya algorithm with classical Runge-Kutta method is applied to solve the Falkner-Skan equations with various wedge angles, which is the fundamental equation for a variety of computational fluid mechanical problems. With some coordinate transformation, the Falkner-Skan boundary layer problem is then converted into a free boundary problem defined on a finite interval. Then using higher order reduction strategies, the whole problem can be boiled down to a solving of coupled differential equations with prescribed initi…
Fuzzy Transform (F-transform) has been introduced as an approximation method which encompasses both classical transforms and approximation methods studied in fuzzy modeling and fuzzy control. It has been proved that, under some conditions, F-transform can remove a periodical noise and it can significantly reduce random noise. In this work we apply the F-transform methodology to propose a finite-difference approach to solving the acoustic wave equation with noisy initial conditions.

In this paper, we introduce an adaptive kernel method for solving the optimal filtering problem. The computational framework that we adopt is the Bayesian filter, in which we recursively generate an optimal estimate for the state of a target stochastic dynamical system based on partial noisy observational data. The mathematical model that we use to formulate the propagation of the state dynamics is the Fokker-Planck equation, and we introduce an operator decomposition method to efficiently solve the Fokker-Planck equation. An adaptive kernel method is introduced to adaptively construct Gaussia…

Nonlinear programming targets nonlinear optimization with constraints, which is a generic yet complex methodology involving humans for problem modeling and algorithms for problem solving. We address the particularly hard challenge of supporting domain experts in handling, understanding, and trouble-shooting high-dimensional optimization with a large number of constraints. Leveraging visual analytics, users are supported in exploring the computation process of nonlinear constraint optimization. Our system was designed for robot motion planning problems and developed in tight collaboration with …
Clawpack is a library for solving nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations using high-resolution finite volume methods based on Riemann solvers and limiters. It supports Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR), which is essential in solving multi-scale problems. Recently, we added capabilities to accelerate the code by using the Graphics Process Unit (GPU). Routines that manage CPU and GPU AMR data and facilitate the execution of GPU kernels are added. Customized and CPU thread-safe memory managers are designed to manage GPU and CPU memory pools, which is essential in eliminating the overhea…
The monodomain model is widely used in in-silico cardiology to describe excitation propagation in the myocardium. Frequently, operator splitting is used to decouple the stiff reaction term and the diffusion term in the monodomain model so that they can be solved separately. Commonly, the diffusion term is solved implicitly with a large time step while the reaction term is solved by using an explicit method with adaptive time stepping. In this work, we propose a fully explicit method for the solution of the decoupled monodomain model. In contrast to semi-implicit methods, fully explicit methods…
