The microscopic theory of superconductivity raised the disruptive idea that electrons couple through the elusive exchange of virtual phonons, overcoming the strong Coulomb repulsion to form Cooper pairs. Light is also known to interact with atomic vibrations, as for example in the Raman effect. We show that photon pairs exchange virtual vibrations in transparent media, leading to an effective photon-photon interaction identical to that for electrons in BCS theory of supercondutivity, in spite of the fact that photons are bosons. In this scenario, photons may exchange energy without matching a quantum of vibration of the medium. As a result, pair correlations for photons scattered away from the Raman resonances are expected to be enhanced. Experimental demonstration of this effect is provided here by time correlated Raman measurements in different media. The experimental data confirm our theoretical interpretation of a photonic Cooper pairing, without the need for any fitting parameters.
We simulated the radiative response of the cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) coupled to the double quantum dot Cooper pair splitter and analyzed its spectral dependence to get insight into dynamics of the Cooper pair transfers. The model is confined to the energy subspace where two entangled electrons are transferred to two normal electrodes through the inter-dot singlet state on two proximitized quantum dots. Our research is focused on the Andreev scatterings in the subgap regime, for which the local charge susceptibility $Π(ω_p)$ is derived, by means of Keldysh Green functions, in a whole…
In this paper, the dynamics of a system composed by an assembly of two-level atoms coupled to a single-mode cavity is theoretically studied considering the Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian. Motivated by recent experimental results in non-linear phenomena on squeezed-like states, we have found that a threefold star state for the whole set of emitters can be dynamically generated from the analogue photonic state; beyond this, we numerically demonstrate, that this transfer of star-like states critically depends with the number of emitters. Quantum statistical properties of the system are obtained by co…
Photons interact with each other in condensed matter through the same mechanism that forms Cooper pairs in superconductors -- the exchange of virtual phonons [PRL 119, 193603 (2017)]. It is however unclear which consequences of this interaction will be observable and potentially lead to further analogy with superconductivity. We investigate the energy, momentum and production rate of correlate Stokes-anti-Stokes (SaS) photons in diamond and other transparent media, experiencing properties akin to those of electronic Cooper pairs. The rate of correlated SaS production depends on the energy shif…
We propose to generate photon-pair blockade in a Josephson-photonics circuit that consists of a dc voltage-biased Josephson junction in series with a superconducting charge qubit and two nondegenerate microwave resonators. The two-level charge qubit is utilized to create anticorrelations of the charge transport; that is, the simultaneous Cooper pair tunneling events are inhibited. When the Josephson frequency matches the sum of resonance frequencies of the charge qubit and the two resonators, we demonstrate that the two resonators can release their energies in the form of antibunched pairs of …
Optically-addressable solid-state spin defects are promising candidates for storing and manipulating quantum information using their long coherence ground state manifold; individual defects can be entangled using photon-photon interactions, offering a path toward large scale quantum photonic networks. Quantum computing protocols place strict limits on the acceptable photon losses in the system. These low-loss requirements cannot be achieved without photonic engineering, but are attainable if combined with state-of-the-art nanophotonic technologies. However, most materials that host spin defect…
We propose an integrated photonics device for mapping qubits encoded in the polarization of a photon onto the spin state of a solid-state defect coupled to a photonic crystal cavity: a `Polarization-Encoded Photon-to-Spin Interface' (PEPSI). We perform a theoretical analysis of the state fidelity's dependence on the device's polarization extinction ratio and atom-cavity cooperativity. Furthermore, we explore the rate-fidelity trade-off through analytical and numerical models. In simulation, we show that our design enables efficient, high fidelity photon-to-spin mapping.
We show unusual cooperative two-photon resonance between two-modes of field inside a photonic crystal cavity. The two-photon resonance occurs when two off resonant quantum dots emit one photon in each cavity mode and de-excite simultaneously. In the presence of phonon coupling the conditions for two-photon resonance change significantly. Using such two-photon two-mode interaction we propose to generate entangled state of two qutrits. The basis of a qutrit are formed by the state of the cavity mode containing $0$, $1$ and $2$ photons. We also discuss effect of phonon coupling on negativity of t…
Photonic hyper-crystals combine the most interesting features of hyperbolic metamaterials and photonic crystals. Since the dispersion law of extraordinary photons in hyperbolic metamaterials does not exhibit the usual diffraction limit, photonic hyper-crystals exhibit light localization on deep subwavelength scales, leading to considerable enhancement of nonlinear photon-photon interaction. Therefore, similar to their conventional photonic crystal counterparts, nonlinear photonic hyper-crystals appear to be very promising in optical limiting and optical computing applications. Nonlinear optics…
A chiral photonic interface is a quantum system that has different probabilities for emitting photons to the left and right. An on-chip compatible chiral interface is attractive for both fundamental studies of light-matter interactions and applications to quantum information processing. We propose such a chiral interface based on superconducting circuits, which has wide bandwidth, rich tunability, and high tolerance to fabrication variations. The proposed interface consists of a core that uses Cooper-pair boxes (CPBs) to break time-reversal symmetry, and two superconducting transmons that conn…
The topological charge of a photonic vortex is an essential quantity in singular optics and the critical parameter to characterize the vorticity of twisted light. However, the definition of the photonic topological charge remains elusive. Here we put forth a theoretical formalism to provide a comprehensive treatment of photonic vortices. We introduce quantum operators for the photon current density and helicity current density based on the continuity equations from the paraxial Helmholtz equation. Our formalism allows us to introduce flow velocity and circulation for photonic currents in paral…
We formulate a Bardeen-Cooper-Schriffer (BCS) theory of quasiparticles in a degenerate Fermi gas strongly coupled to photons in a optical cavity. The elementary photonic excitations of the system are cavity polaritons, which consist of a cavity photon and an excitation of an atom within the Fermi sea. The excitation of the atom out of the Fermi sea leaves behind a hole, which together results in a loosely bound Cooper pair, allowing for the system to be written by a BCS wavefunction. As the density of the excitations is increased, the excited atom and hole become more strongly bound, crossing …
Enhanced interaction between two two-level emitters (e.g., atoms) by nonreciprocal photonic media can be of benefit to broad areas, from quantum information science to biological detection. Here we provide a detailed analysis on why nonreciprocal photon-mediated interaction enhances inter-atomic excitation transport efficiency. We investigate a system consisting of two two-level emitters embedded in a generic photonic environment. By comparing symmetric and asymmetric photon-exchange, we analytically show that breaking electromagnetic reciprocity makes it possible for the cooperative decay rat…
