We analyze the quantum dynamics of two electromagnetic oscillators coupled in series to a voltage biased Josephson junction. When the applied voltage leads to a Josephson frequency across the junction which matches the sum of the two mode frequencies, tunneling Cooper pairs excite photons in both modes simultaneously leading to far-from-equilibrium states. These states display highly non-classical features including strong anti-bunching, violation of Cauchy-Schwartz inequalities, and number squeezing. The regimes of low and high photon occupancies allow for analytical results which are supported by a full numerical treatment. The impact of asymmetries between the two modes is explored, revealing a pronounced enhancement of number squeezing when the modes are damped at different rates.
We present a detailed study of photonic heat transport across a Josephson junction coupled to two arbitrary linear circuits having different temperatures. First, we consider the linear approximation, in which a nonlinear Josephson potential is replaced by a quadratic one and the junction acts as an inductor. Afterwards, we discuss the effects of junction anharmonicity. We separately consider the weak-coupling limit, in which the Bloch band structure of the junction energy spectrum plays an important role, and the opposite strong-coupling regime. We apply our general results to two specific mod…
Josephson-photonics devices have emerged in the last years as versatile platforms to study light-charge interactions far from equilibrium and to create nonclassical radiation. Their potential to operate as nanoscale heat engines has also been discussed. The complementary mode of cooling is investigated here in the regimes of low and large photon occupancy, where nonlinearities are essential.
We propose a realization of the superconducting diode effect in flux biased superconducting circuits of Josephson junctions. So far the observation of the superconducting diode effect has been limited to rather exotic material platforms. In theoretical proposals, it relied on a non-sinusoidal form of the current phase relation of Josephson junctions. Here, we show how the diode effect can be engineered in superconducting circuits without any such requirements. The only necessary ingredients are standard sinusoidal Josephson junctions and flux bias lines that are readily available in scalable i…
Injection locking can stabilize a source of radiation, leading to an efficient suppression of noise-induced spectral broadening and therefore, to a narrow spectrum. The technique is well established in laser physics, where a phenomenological description due to Adler is usually sufficient. Recently, locking experiments were performed in Josephson photonics devices, where microwave radiation is created by inelastic Cooper pair tunneling across a dc-biased Josephson junction connected in-series with a microwave resonator. An in-depth theory of locking for such devices, accounting for the Josephso…
Towards 4 formalisms description of properties of the unconventional Josephson junction and unconventional SQUIDs made by putting non-superconducting strip on the top of superconducting strip
Josephson junctions and superconducting wires when probed with current pulses exhibit stochastic switching from superconducting to a stable non-zero voltage state. Electrical current dependence of the switching probability (so called S-curve) or switching current distribution is a fingerprint of the physics governing the escape process. This work addresses the criterion of independent switching event in a series of switching experiments. Treating Josephson junction as an electrical coin with current-tuned switching probability we investigate effect of correlation between switching events on th…
We consider a planar SIS-type Josephson junction between diffusive superconductors (S) through an insulating tunnel interface (I). We construct fully self-consistent perturbation theory with respect to the interface conductance. As a result, we find correction to the first Josephson harmonic and calculate the second Josephson harmonic. At arbitrary temperatures, we correct previous results for the nonsinusoidal current-phase relation in Josephson tunnel junctions, which were obtained with the help of conjectured form of solution. Our perturbation theory also describes the difference between th…
Superconducting materials with non-centrosymmetric lattices lacking the space inversion symmetry are known to exhibit a variety of interesting parity-breaking phenomena, including the anomalous Josephson effect. Here we consider a Josephson junction consisting of two non-centrosymmetric superconductors (NCSs) connected by a uniaxial ferromagnet, and demonstrate that it exhibits a direct analog of the Chiral Magnetic Effect observed in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. We propose to use this "Chiral Magnetic Josephson junction" (CMJ junction) as an element of a qubit with a Hamiltonian tunable by the …
By definition, the $p$-terminal dc-Josephson current is sensitive to the superconducting phase variables of $p$ terminals. In the paper, we establish protocol for direct detection of the $p$-terminal dc-Josephson effect with $p\ge 3$ in a device containing $N$ superconducting leads $S_1,\,S_2,\,...,\,S_N$ having the phase variables $φ_1,\,φ_2,\,...,\,φ_N$. The calculated signal $χ^{(N)}$ can be probed in microwave experiments, and it corresponds to the higher-order nonlocal inverse inductance obtained from differentiating the current $I_1$ through $S_1$ with respect to the remaining $N-2$ inde…
Superconducting weak-link (WL), behaving like a Josephson junction (JJ), is fundamental to many superconducting devices such as nanoSQUIDs, single-photon detectors, and bolometers. The interplay between unique nonlinear dynamics and inevitable Joule heating in a JJ leads to new characteristics. Here, we report a time-dependent model incorporating thermal effect in the AC Josephson regime for a Josephson WL shunted by a resistor together with an inductor to investigate the dynamics as well as the resulting current-voltage characteristics. We find that the dynamic regime where phase and temperat…

A superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) comprising 0- and $π$-Josephson junctions (JJs), called $π$-SQUID, is studied by the resistively shunted junction model. The $π$-SQUID shows half-integer Shapiro-steps (SS) under microwave irradiation at the voltage $V$ = $(\hbar/2e)Ω(n/2)$, with angular frequency $Ω$ and half-integer $n$/2 in addition to integer $n$. We show that the $π$-SQUID can be a $π$-qubit with spontaneous loop currents by which the half-integer SS are induced. Making the 0- and $π$-JJs equivalent is a key for the half-integer SS and realizing the $π$-qubit.
We explore the similarities and differences between simple theoretical models developed to describe the quantum optical micromaser and Josephson-photonics devices. Whilst the micromaser has long been recognised as an important model for the dynamics of open quantum systems far from equilibrium, so-called Josephson-photonics devices are a recently developed form of superconducting quantum circuit in which the quantum transport of charges through a voltage-biased Josephson junction drives the production of photons in a microwave resonator.
Superconducting computing promises enhanced computational power in both classical and quantum approaches. Yet, scalable and fast superconducting memories are not implemented. Here, we propose a fully superconducting memory cell based on the hysteretic phase-slip transition existing in long aluminum nanowire Josephson junctions. Embraced by a superconducting ring, the memory cell codifies the logic state in the direction of the circulating persistent current, as commonly defined in flux-based superconducting memories. But, unlike the latter, the hysteresis here is a consequence of the phase-sli…
We study the key features of the Josephson transport through a curved semiconducting nanowire. Based on numerical simulations and analytical estimates within the framework of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations we find the ground-state phase difference $φ_0$ between the superconducting leads tuned by the spin splitting field $h$ driving the system from the topologically trivial to the nontrivial superconducting state. The phase $φ_0$ vanishes for rather small $h$, grows in a certain field range around the topological transition, and then saturates at large $h$ in the Kitaev regime. Both the sub…
Bilayer graphene has two non-equivalent sublattices and, therefore, the same adatom impurity can manifest in spectrally distinct ways-sharp versus broad resonances near the charge neutrality-depending on the sublattice it adsorbs at. Employing Green's function analytical methods and the numerical Kwant package we investigate the spectral and transport interplay between the resonances and superconducting coherence induced in bilayer graphene by proximity to an s-wave superconductor. Analyzing doping and temperature dependencies of quasi-particle spin-relaxation rates, energies of Yu-Shiba-Rusin…
