We produce synthetic spectra and observations for metal-free stellar populations and high mass X-ray binaries in the Renaissance Simulations at a redshift of 15. We extend our methodology from the first paper in the series by modelling the production and extinction of emission lines throughout a dusty and metal-enriched interstellar and circum-galactic media extracted from the simulation, using a Monte Carlo calculation. To capture the impact of high-energy photons, we include all frequencies from hard X-ray to far infrared with enough frequency resolution to discern line emission and absorption profiles. The most common lines in our sample in order of their rate of occurrence are Ly$α$, the C IV $λ\lambda1548,1551$ doublet, H-$α$, and the Ca II $λλ\lambda8498,8542,8662$ triplet. The best scenario for a direct observation of a metal-free stellar population is a merger between two Population III galaxies. In mergers between metal-enriched and metal-free stellar populations, some characteristics may be inferred indirectly. Single Population III galaxies are too dim to be observed photometrically at $z = 15$. Ly$α$ emission is discernible by $JWST$ as an increase in $\rm{J_{200w} - J_{277w}}$ colour off the intrinsic stellar tracks. Observations of metal-free stars will be difficult, though not impossible, with the next generation of space telescopes.
We present the results of the stellar feedback from Pop III binaries by employing improved, more realistic Pop III evolutionary stellar models. To facilitate a meaningful comparison, we consider a fixed mass of 60 solar masses (Msun) incorporated in Pop III stars, either contained in a single star, or split up in binary stars of 30 Msun each or an asymmetric case of one 45 Msun and one 15 Msun star. Whereas the sizes of the resulting HII regions are comparable across all cases, the HeIII regions around binary stars are significantly smaller than that of the single star. Consequently, the He$^{…
The relationship between dust polarization and extinction was determined for the cold dense starless molecular cloud core FeSt 1-457 based on the background star polarimetry of dichroic extinction at near-infrared wavelengths. Owing to the known (three-dimensional) magnetic field structure, the observed polarizations from the core were corrected by considering (a) the subtraction of the ambient polarization component, (b) the depolarization effect of inclined distorted magnetic fields, and (c) the magnetic inclination angle of the core. After these corrections, a linear relationship between po…
The characterisation of the extinction curve in the near infrared (NIR) is fundamental to analyse the structure and stellar population of the Galactic centre (GC), whose analysis is hampered by the extreme interstellar extinction ($A_V\sim 30$ mag) that varies on arc-second scales. Recent studies indicate that the behaviour of the extinction curve might be more complex than previously assumed, pointing towards a variation of the extinction curve as a function of wavelength. We aim at analysing the variations of the extinction index, $α$, with wavelength, line-of-sight, and absolute extinction,…
We want to estimate the distance to molecular clouds in the solar vicinity in a statistically precise way. Clouds are recognized as extinction discontinuities. The extinction is estimated from the $(H-K) \ vs. \ (J-H)$ diagram and distances from a $(J-K)_0 \ vs. \ M_J$ relation based on Hipparcos. The stellar sample of relevance for the cloud distance is confined by the FWHM of the $A_V / D_{\star}(pc)$ or of its derivative. The cloud distance is estimated from fitting a function to the $(A_V, 1/ π_{JHK})$ pairs in this sample with a function like $arctanh^p (D_\star /D_{cloud})$ where the pow…
We provide new, high-resolution A(Ks) extinction maps of the heavily reddened Galactic midplane based on the Rayleigh-Jeans Color Excess ("RJCE") method. RJCE determines star-by-star reddening based on a combination of near- and mid-infrared photometry. The new RJCE-generated maps have 2 x 2 arcmin pixels and span some of the most severely extinguished regions of the Galaxy -- those covered with Spitzer+IRAC imaging by the GLIMPSE-I, -II, -3D, and Vela-Carina surveys, from 256<l<65 deg and, in general, for |b| <= 1-1.5 deg (extending up to |b|<=4 deg in the bulge). Using RJCE extinction measur…
In this paper we present multi-band period-luminosity (P-L) relations for fundamental mode Cepheids in the SMC. The optical VI-band mean magnitudes for these SMC Cepheids were taken from the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) catalog. We also matched the OGLE-III SMC Cepheids to 2MASS and SAGE-SMC catalog to derive mean magnitudes in the JHK-bands and the four {\it Spitzer} IRAC bands, respectively. All photometry was corrected for extinction by adopting the Zaritsky's extinction map. Cepheids with periods smaller than $\sim2.5$ days were removed from the sa…
Black hole-main sequence star (BH-MS) binaries are one of the targets of the future data releases of the astrometric satellite {\it Gaia}. They are supposed to be formed in two main sites: a galactic field and star clusters. However, previous work has never predicted the number of BH-MS binaries originating in the latter site. In this paper, we estimate the number of BH-MS binaries formed in open clusters and detectable with {\it Gaia} based on the results of {\it N}-body simulations. By considering interstellar extinction in the Milky Way (MW) and observational constraints, we predict $\sim 1…
The disk fragmentation is a possible process leading to the formation of Population III stellar binary systems. However, numerical simulations show diverse fates of the fragments; some evolve into stable binaries and others merge away with a central star. To clarify the physics behind such diversity, we perform a series of three dimensional hydrodynamics simulations in a controlled manner. We insert a point particle mimicking a fragment in a self-gravitating disk, where the initial mass and position are free parameters, and follow the orbital evolution for several tens of orbits. The results s…
We present a sample of 75 extinction curves derived from FUSE far-ultraviolet spectra supplemented by existing IUE spectra. The extinction curves were created using the standard pair method based on a new set of dereddened FUSE+IUE comparison stars. Molecular hydrogen absorption features were removed using individualized H_2 models for each sightline. The general shape of the FUSE extinction (8.4 micron^-1 < lambda^-1 < 11 micron^-1) was found to be broadly consistent with extrapolations from the IUE extinction (3.3 micron-1 < lambda^-1 < 8.6 micron^-1) curve. Significant differences were seen…
Using cosmological volume simulations and a custom built sub-grid model for Pop~III star formation, we examine the baseline dust extinction in the first galaxies due to Pop~III metal enrichment in the first billion years of cosmic history. We find that while the most enriched, high-density lines of sight in primordial galaxies can experience a measurable amount of extinction from Pop~III dust ($E(B-V)_{\rm max}=0.07,\ A_{\rm V,max}\approx0.28$), the average extinction is very low with $\left< E(B-V) \right> \lesssim 10^{-3}$. We derive a power-law relationship between dark matter halo mass and…
We combine VI photometry from OGLE-III with VVV and 2MASS measurements of E(J-K_{s}) to resolve the longstanding problem of the non-standard optical extinction toward the Galactic bulge. We show that the extinction is well-fit by the relation A_{I} = 0.7465*E(V-I) + 1.3700*E(J-K_{s}), or, equivalently, A_{I} = 1.217*E(V-I)(1+1.126*(E(J-K_{s})/E(V-I)-0.3433)). The optical and near-IR reddening law toward the inner Galaxy approximately follows an R_{V} \approx 2.5 extinction curve with a dispersion σ_{R_{V}} \approx 0.2, consistent with extragalactic investigations of the hosts of type Ia SNe. D…
We have determined interstellar extinction law toward the Galactic center (GC) at the wavelength from 1.2 to 8.0 micron, using point sources detected in the IRSF/SIRIUS near-infrared survey and those in the 2MASS and Spitzer/IRAC/GLIMPSE II catalogs. The central region |l| < 3deg and |b| < 1deg has been surveyed in the J, H and Ks bands with the IRSF telescope and the SIRIUS camera whose filters are similar to the Mauna Kea Observatories (MKO) near-infrared photometric system. Combined with the GLIMPSE II point source catalog, we made Ks versus (Ks - lambda) color-magnitude diagrams where lamb…

We present the analysis of 11 589 eclipsing binary stars identified in twenty-one OGLE-III Galactic disk fields toward constellations of Carina, Centaurus, and Musca. All eclipsing binaries but 402 objects are new discoveries. The binaries have out-of-eclipse brightness between I=12.5 mag and I=21 mag. The completeness of the catalog is estimated at a level of about 75%. Comparison of the orbital period distribution for the OGLE-III disk binaries with systems detected in other recent large-scale Galactic surveys shows the maximum around 0.40 d and an almost flat distribution between 0.5 d and …
Context. The Vela complex is a region of the sky that gathers several stellar and interstellar structures in a few hundred square degrees. Aims. Gaia data now allows us to obtain a 3D view of the Vela interstellar structures through the dust extinction. Methods. We used the FEDReD (Field Extinction-Distance Relation Deconvolver) algorithm on near-infrared 2MASS data, cross-matched with the Gaia DR2 catalogue, to obtain a 3D cube of extinction density. We applied the FellWalker algorithm on this cube to locate clumps and dense structures. Results. We analysed 18 million stars on $450~\mathrm{de…
Context: It appears that most (if not all) massive stars are born in multiple systems. At the same time, the most massive binaries are hard to find due to their low numbers throughout the Galaxy and the implied large distances and extinctions. AIMS: We want to study: [a] LS III +46 11, identified in this paper as a very massive binary; [b] another nearby massive system, LS III +46 12; and [c] the surrounding stellar cluster, Berkeley 90. Methods: Most of the data used in this paper are multi-epoch high-S/N optical spectra though we also use Lucky Imaging and archival photometry. The spectra ar…
CLUES III: Do User Choices Impact The Results of SED Fitting? Tests of 'Off-The-Shelf' Stellar Population and Dust Extinction Models in the CLUES Sample
We perform a cosmological simulation in order to model the growth and evolution of Population III (Pop III) stellar systems in a range of host minihalo environments. A Pop III multiple system forms in each of the ten minihaloes, and the overall mass function is top-heavy compared to the currently observed initial mass function in the Milky Way. Using a sink particle to represent each growing protostar, we examine the binary characteristics of the multiple systems, resolving orbits on scales as small as 20 AU. We find a binary fraction of ~36%, with semi-major axes as large as 3000 AU. The dist…
We present multi-wavelength global star formation rate (SFR) estimates for 326 galaxies from the Star Formation Reference Survey (SFRS) in order to determine the mutual scatter and range of validity of different indicators. The widely used empirical SFR recipes based on 1.4 GHz continuum, 8.0 $μ$m polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and a combination of far-infrared (FIR) plus ultraviolet (UV) emission are mutually consistent with scatter of $\raise{-0.8ex}\stackrel{\textstyle <}{\sim }$0.3 dex. The scatter is even smaller, $\raise{-0.8ex}\stackrel{\textstyle <}{\sim }$0.24 dex, in the int…
We have compiled the most complete census of High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) in the Small Magellanic Cloud with the aim to investigate the formation efficiency of young accreting binaries in its low metallicity environment. In total, we use 127 X-ray sources with detections in our \chandra X-ray Visionary Program (XVP), supplemented by 14 additional (likely and confirmed) HMXBs identified by \cite{2016A&A...586A..81H} that fall within the XVP area, but are not either detected in our survey (9 sources) or matched with any XVP source that has at least one OB counterpart in the OGLE-III catalog …
Understanding of the role of X-rays for driving the thermal evolution of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at high redshifts is one of important questions in astrophysics. High-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in early stellar populations are prime X-ray source; however, their formation efficiency is not well understood. Using $N$-body simulations, we estimate the HMXB formation rate via mutual gravitational interactions of nascent, small groups of the Population~III stars. We find that HMXBs form at a rate of one per $\gtrsim 10^{4}M_{\odot}$ in newly born stars, and that they emit with a power of $\…
We have explored the capabilities of dust extinction and $γ$ rays to probe the properties of the interstellar medium in the nearby anti-centre region. We have jointly modelled the $γ$-ray intensity and the stellar reddening, E(B-V) as a combination of H$_{\rm I}$-bright, CO-bright, and ionised gas components. The complementary information from dust reddening and $γ$ rays is used to reveal the dark gas not seen, or poorly traced, by H$_{\rm I}$, free-free, and $^{12}$CO emissions. We compare the total gas column densities, $N_{\rm{H}}$, derived from the $γ$ rays and stellar reddening with those…
We present new results concerning the sub-stellar binary population in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). Using the Karhunen-Loève Image Projection (KLIP) algorithm, we have reprocessed images taken with the IR channel of the Wide Field Camera 3 mounted on the Hubble Space Telescope to unveil faint close companions in the wings of the stellar PSFs. Starting with a sample of $1392$ bona-fide not saturated cluster members, we detect $39$ close-pairs cluster candidates with separation $0.16''-0.77''$. The primary masses span a range M$_p$ $\sim 0.015-1.27$ M$_{\odot}$ whereas for the companions we d…
Extremely low mass (ELM) white dwarfs (WDs) with masses <0.25 Msun are rare objects that result from compact binary evolution. Here, we present a targeted spectroscopic survey of ELM WD candidates selected by color. The survey is 71% complete and has uncovered 18 new ELM WDs. Of the 7 ELM WDs with follow-up observations, 6 are short-period binaries and 4 have merger times less than 5 Gyr. The most intriguing object, J1741+6526, likely has either a pulsar companion or a massive WD companion making the system a possible supernova Type Ia or .Ia progenitor. The overall ELM Survey has now identifi…
Secular evolution of binaries driven by an external (tidal) potential is a classic astrophysical problem. Tidal perturbations can arise due to an external point mass, as in the Lidov-Kozai (LK) theory of hierarchical triples, or due to an extended stellar system (e.g. galaxy or globular cluster) in which the binary resides. For many applications, general-relativistic (GR) apsidal precession is important, and has been accounted for in some LK calculations. Here we generalise and extend these studies by exploring in detail the effect of GR precession on (quadrupole-level) tidal evolution of bina…
Detection of black holes (BHs) with detached luminous companions (LCs) can be instrumental in connecting the BH properties with their progenitors' since the latter can be inferred from the observable properties of the LC. Past studies showed the promise of Gaia astrometry in detecting BH-LC binaries. We build upon these studies by: 1) initialising the zero-age binary properties based on realistic, metallicity-dependent star-formation history in the Milky Way (MW), 2) evolving these binaries to current epoch to generate realistic MW populations of BH-LC binaries, 3) distributing these binaries …
We use N-body simulations to study the dynamical evolution of Population III (Pop III) stellar systems and the resulting binary statistics. We design a physically-motivated framework for the initial conditions of Pop III star clusters, based on small-scale hydrodynamic simulations and the scale-free nature of disk evolution during Pop III star formation. Our novel approach enables us to explore the dependence of binary statistics on initial conditions and arrive at more robust predictions for the signals of Pop III X-ray binaries (XRBs) and binary black hole (BBH) mergers, compared to simple e…
Due to their long mean free path, X-rays are expected to have an important impact on cosmic reionization by heating and ionizing the IGM on large scales, especially after simulations have suggested that Population III stars may form in pairs at redshifts as high as 20 - 30. We use the Pop III distribution and evolution from a self-consistent cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulation of the formation of the first galaxies and a simple Pop III X-ray binaries model to estimate their X-ray output in a high density region larger than 100 comoving (Mpc)$^3$. We then combine three different met…
We present results from a study of ab-type RR Lyrae variables in the Large Magellanic Cloud using the extensive dataset from phase III of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). The metallicities of the RR Lyraes, determined from the periods and amplitudes of their light curves, reveal a statistically significant radial abundance gradient that is approximately one-half of what is seen in the disks of the Milky Way and M33. The RR Lyrae abundance gradient agrees with that of the old and metal-poor LMC globular clusters. The reddenings of the OGLE RR Lyraes have been calculated usin…
We present 27 binary lens candidates from OGLE-III Early Warning System database for the seasons 2006--2008. The candidates have been selected by visual light curves inspection. Our sample of binary lens events consists now of 78 stellar systems and 7 extrasolar planets of OGLE-III published elsewhere. Examining the distribution of stellar binaries we find that the number of systems per logarithmic mass ratio interval increases with mass ratio q, in contradiction with our previous findings. Stellar binaries belong to the region 0.03<q<1 and there is a gap between them and a separate population…
Detailed spectroscopic studies of metal-poor halo stars have highlighted the important role of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars in understanding the early production and ejection of carbon in the Galaxy and in identifying the progenitors of the CEMP stars among the first stars formed after the Big Bang. Recent work has also classified the CEMP stars by absolute carbon abundance, A(C), into high- and low-C bands, mostly populated by binary and single stars, respectively. Our aim is to determine the frequency and orbital parameters of binary systems among the CEMP-s stars, which exhibit s…
Stellar-remnant black holes (BH) in dense stellar clusters comprise a natural setup to trigger general-relativistic (GR) inspiral and merger of binary black holes (BBH), detectable by the LISA and the LIGO-Virgo, through dynamical encounters inside such environments. In this work, the intricacies of such dynamical interactions are probed utilizing realistic, self-consistent, post-Newtonian, direct N-body evolutionary models of young massive and open stellar clusters. Particularly, the configurations of the compact subsystems, that drive the in-cluster GR BBH coalescences, are tracked on the fl…
We present new high resolution and dynamic range dust column density and temperature maps of the California Molecular Cloud derived from a combination of Planck and Herschel dust-emission maps, and 2MASS NIR dust-extinction maps. We used these data to determine the ratio of the 2.2 micron extinction coefficient to the 850 micron opacity and found the value to be close to that found in similar studies of the Orion B and Perseus clouds but higher than that characterizing the Orion A cloud, indicating that variations in the fundamental optical properties of dust may exist between local clouds. We…
Due to their long mean free paths, X-rays are expected to have many significant impacts globally on the properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) by their heating and ionizing processes on large scales. At high redshifts, X-rays from Population (Pop) III binaries might have important effects on cosmic reionization and the Lyman alpha forest. As a continuation of our previous work on Pop III binary X-rays (Xu et al. 2014), we use the Pop III distribution and evolution from the Renaissance Simulations, a suite of self-consistent cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations of the formatio…
Only a few wide-orbit planets around old stars have been detected, which limits our statistical understanding of this planet population. Following the systematic search for planetary anomalies in microlensing events found by the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet), we present the discovery and analysis of three events that were initially thought to contain wide-orbit planets. The anomalous feature in the light curve of OGLE-2018-BLG-0383 is caused by a planet with mass ratio $q=2.1\times 10^{-4}$ and a projected separation $s=2.45$. This makes it the lowest mass-ratio microlensing pl…
We present new isochrone fits to colour-magnitude diagrams of the Galactic globular clusters NGC\,288, NGC\,362, and NGC\,6218 (M12). We utilize a lot of photometric bands from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared by use of data from the {\it HST}, {\it Gaia}, unWISE, Pan-STARRS, and other photometric sources. In our isochrone fitting we use theoretical models and isochrones from the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Program and Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones for $α$-enhanced abundance [$α$/Fe]$=+0.40$, different helium abundances, and a metallicity of about [Fe/H]$=-1.3$ adopted from the literatur…
As part of the Swift/UVOT Stars Survey, we present near-ultraviolet point-source photometry for 103 Galactic open clusters. These data, taken over the span of the mission, provide a unique and unprecedented set of near-ultraviolet point-source photometry on simple stellar populations. After applying membership analysis fueled mostly by GAIA DR2 proper motions, we find that 49 of these 103 have clear precise CMDs amenable to investigation. We compare the CMDs to theoretical isochrones and find good agreement between the theoretical isochrones and the CMDs. The exceptions are the fainter parts o…
The first astrophysical objects shaped the cosmic environment by reionizing and heating the intergalactic medium (IGM). In particular, X-rays are very efficient at heating the IGM before it became completely ionized, an effect that can be measured through the 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen. High-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), known to be prolific X-ray sources in star-forming galaxies at lower redshifts, are prime candidates for driving the thermal evolution of the IGM at redshifts $z > 20$. Despite their importance, the formation efficiency of HMXBs from the first stellar populations is not wel…
This study is the third of a series that investigates the degeneracy and stochasticity problems present in the determination of physical parameters such as age, mass, extinction, and metallicity of partially resolved or unresolved star cluster populations situated in external galaxies when using broad-band photometry. This work tests the derivation of parameters of artificial star clusters using models with fixed and free metallicity for the WFC3+ACS photometric system. Then the method is applied to derive parameters of a sample of 203 star clusters in the Andromeda galaxy observed with the HS…
With recent Herschel observations, the northern filament of the Corona Australis cloud has now been mapped in a number of bands from 1.2um to 870um. The data set provides a good starting point for the study of the cloud over several orders of magnitude in density. We wish to examine the differences of the column density distributions derived from dust extinction, scattering, and emission, and to determine to what extent the observations are consistent with the standard dust models. From Herschel data, we calculate the column density distribution that is compared to the corresponding data deriv…
Binaries are very common in galaxies, and more than half of Galactic hot subdwarf stars, which are thought as a possible origin of UV-upturn of old stellar populations, are found in binaries. Previous works showed that binary evolution can make the spectra of binary star populations significantly different from those of single star populations. However, the effect of binary evolution has not been taken into account in most works of spectral fitting of galaxies. This paper studies the role of binary evolution in spectral fitting of early-type galaxies, via a stellar population synthesis model i…
An intense search for kinematic signatures of reverberation mapping of close binary SMBH (SMBBH) is currently ongoing. Elliptical SMBBH systems (i.e. both orbits and disc-like broad-line regions (BLR) are elliptic) have not been assessed in two-dimensional transfer functions (2DTF) studies. We aim to numerically infer such a 2DTF because the geometry of the unresolved region is imprinted on their optical emission. Through this, we determine their specific kinematical signatures. We simulated the geometry and kinematics of SMBBH whose components are on elliptical orbits. Each SMBH had a disc-li…
