Two celebrated conjectures in chromatic symmetric function theory concern the positivity chromatics symmetric functions of claw-free graphs. Here we extend the claw-free idea to general graphs and consider the e-positivity question for H-free graphs where H = {claw, F} and H={claw, F, co-F}, where F is a four-vertex graph. We settle the question for all cases except H={claw, co-diamond}, and we provide some partial results in that case.
This paper describes how many known graph polynomials arise from the coefficients of chromatic symmetric function expansions in different bases, and studies a new polynomial arising by expanding over a basis given by chromatic symmetric functions of trees.
Stanley [9] introduced the chromatic symmetric function ${\bf X}_G$ associated to a simple graph $G$ as a generalization of the chromatic polynomial of $G$. In this paper we present a novel technique to write ${\bf X}_G$ as a linear combination of chromatic symmetric functions of smaller graphs. We use this technique to give a sufficient condition for two graphs to have the same chromatic symmetric function. We extend the definition of the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ to include graphs $G$ with a vertex-weight function $w : V(G) \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$. We show how this provides the chromatic symmetric function with a natural deletion-contraction relation analogous to that of the chromatic polynomial. Using this relation we derive new properties of the chromatic symmetric function, and we give alternate proofs of many fundamental properties of $X_G$.

This paper deals with the so-called Stanley conjecture, which asks whether they are non-isomorphic trees with the same symmetric function generalization of the chromatic polynomial. By establishing a correspondence between caterpillars trees and integer compositions, we prove that caterpillars in a large class (we call trees in this class proper) have the same symmetric chromatic function generalization of the chromatic polynomial if and only if they are isomorphic.
We give a new proof of Chung and Graham's ``G-descent expansion'' of the classical chromatic polynomial, as well as a special case of the quasi-symmetric function expansion of the path-cycle symmetric function Xi_D. Both proofs rely on Stanley's quasi-symmetric function expansion of the chromatic symmetric function X_G. We also show that Stanley's expansion suggests that a Robinson-Schensted algorithm for (3+1)-free posets---something that has been sought for unsuccessfully for some time---ought to ``respect descents'' in a certain precise sense.

We give a proof of Stanley-Stembridge conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions for the class of all unit interval graphs with independence number 3. That is, we show that the chromatic symmetric function of the incomparability graph of a unit interval order in which the length of a chain is at most 3 is positively expanded as a linear sum of elementary symmetric functions.
Let G be a graph, and let $χ$G be its chromatic polynomial. For any non-negative integers i, j, we give an interpretation for the evaluation $χ$ (i) G (--j) in terms of acyclic orientations. This recovers the classical interpretations due to Stanley and to Green and Zaslavsky respectively in the cases i = 0 and j = 0. We also give symmetric function refinements of our interpretations, and some extensions. The proofs use heap theory in the spirit of a 1999 paper of Gessel.

The chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a graph $G$ was introduced by Stanley. In this paper we introduce a quasisymmetric generalization $X^k_G$ called the $k$-chromatic quasisymmetric function of $G$ and show that it is positive in the fundamental basis for the quasisymmetric functions. Following the specialization of $X_G$ to $χ_G(λ)$, the chromatic polynomial, we also define a generalization $χ^k_G(λ)$ and show that evaluations of this polynomial for negative values generalize a theorem of Stanley relating acyclic orientations to the chromatic polynomial.
For a tree $T$, consider its smallest subtree $T^{\circ}$ containing all vertices of degree at least $3$. Then the remaining edges of $T$ lie on disjoint paths each with one endpoint on $T^{\circ}$. We show that the chromatic symmetric function of $T$ determines the size of $T^{\circ}$, and the multiset of the lengths of these incident paths. In particular, this generalizes a proof of Martin, Morin, and Wagner that the chromatic symmetric function distinguishes spiders.
In this note we classify when a skew Schur function is a positive linear combination of power sum symmetric functions. We then use this to determine precisely when any scalar multiple of a skew Schur function is the chromatic symmetric function of some graph. From here we are able to prove that of the classical bases for symmetric functions only certain scalar multiples of the elementary symmetric functions can be realised as the chromatic symmetric function of some graph, namely a particular union of complete graphs.
We consider a linear relation which expresses Stanley's chromatic symmetric function for a poset in terms of the chromatic symmetric functions of some closely related posets, which we call the modular law. By applying this in the context of (3+1)-free posets, we are able to reduce Stanley and Stembridge's conjecture that the chromatic symmetric functions of all (3+1)-free posets are e-positive to the case of (3+1)-and-(2+2)-free posets, also known as unit interval orders. A well-known open problem in graph theory asks whether Stanley's chromatic symmetric function, a generalization of the chromatic polynomial of a graph, distinguishes between any two non-isomorphic trees. Previous work has proven the conjecture for a class of trees called spiders. This paper generalizes the class of spiders to $n$-spiders, where normal spiders correspond to $n = 1$, and verifies the conjecture for $n = 2$.
Plethysm is a fundamental operation in symmetric function theory, derived directly from its connection with representation theory. However, it does not admit a simple combinatorial interpretation, and finding coefficients of Schur function plethysms is a major open question. In this paper, we introduce a graph-theoretic interpretation for any plethysm based on the chromatic symmetric function. We use this interpretation to give simple proofs of new and previously known plethystic identities, as well as chromatic symmetric function identities.

We define the acyclic orientation polynomial of a graph to be the generating function for the sinks of its acyclic orientations. Stanley proved that the number of acyclic orientations is equal to the chromatic polynomial evaluated at $-1$ up to sign. Motivated by this link between acyclic orientations and the chromatic polynomial, we develop "acyclic orientation" analogues of theorems concerning the chromatic polynomial of Birkhoff, Whitney, and Greene-Zaslavsky. In this note we obtain numerous new bases for the algebra of symmetric functions whose generators are chromatic symmetric functions. More precisely, if $\{ G_ k \}_{k\geq 1}$ is a set of connected graphs such that $G_k$ has $k$ vertices for each $k$, then the set of all chromatic symmetric functions $\{ X_{G_ k} \}_{k\geq 1}$ generates the algebra of symmetric functions. We also obtain explicit expressions for the generators arising from complete graphs, star graphs, path graphs and cycle graphs.

We investigate the $e$-positivity and Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric functions of some spider graphs with three legs. We obtain the positivity classification of all broom graphs and that of most double broom graphs. The methods involve extracting particular $e$-coefficients of the chromatic symmetric function of these graphs with the aid of Orellana and Scott's triple-deletion property, and using the combinatorial formula of Schur coefficients by examining certain special rim hook tabloids. We also propose some conjectures on the $e$-positivity and Schur positivity of trees.

We provide a formula for every Schur coefficient in the chromatic symmetric function of a graph in terms of special rim hook tabloids. This formula is useful in confirming the non-Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, especially when Stanley's stable partition method does not work. As applications, we determine Schur positive fan graphs and Schur positive complete tripartite graphs. The chromatic symmetric function $X_H$ of a hypergraph $H$ is the generating function for all colorings of $H$ so that no edge is monochromatic. When $H$ is an ordinary graph, it is known that $X_H$ is positive in the fundamental quasisymmetric functions $F_S$, but this is not the case for general hypergraphs. We exhibit a class of hypergraphs $H$ --- hypertrees with prime-sized edges --- for which $X_H$ is $F$-positive, and give an explicit combinatorial interpretation for the $F$-coefficients of $X_H$.
It is a long-standing question of Stanley whether or not the chromatic symmetric function (CSF) distinguishes unrooted trees. Previously, the best computational result, due to Russell, proved that it distinguishes all trees with at most $25$ vertices. In this paper, we present a novel probabilistic algorithm which may be used to check more efficiently that the CSF distinguishes a set of trees. Applying it, we verify that the CSF distinguishes all trees with up to $29$ vertices.
We establish Guay-Paquet's unpublished linear relation between certain chromatic symmetric functions by relating his algebra on paths to the $q$-Klyachko algebra. The coefficients in this relations are $q$-hit polynomials, and they come up naturally in our setup as connected remixed Eulerian numbers, in contrast to the computational approach of Colmenarejo-Morales-Panova. As Guay-Paquet's algebra is a down-up algebra, we are able to harness algebraic results in the context of the latter and establish results of a combinatorial flavour. In this article we show how to compute the chromatic quasisymmetric function of indifference graphs from the modular law introduced by Guay-Paquet. We provide an algorithm which works for any function that satisfies this law, such as unicellular LLT polynomials. When the indifference graph has bipartite complement it reduces to a planar network, in this case, we prove that the coefficients of the chromatic quasisymmetric function in the elementary basis are positive unimodal polynomials and characterize them as certain $q$-hit numbers (up to a factor). We investigate chromatic symmetric functions in the relation to the algebra $Γ$ of symmetric functions generated by Schur $Q$-functions. We construct natural bases of $Γ$ in terms of chromatic symmetric functions. We also consider the $p$-positivity of skew Schur $Q$-functions and find a class of $p$-positive ribbon Schur $Q$-functions, making a conjecture that they are \emph{all}. We include many concrete computational results that support our conjecture.

In this paper, we investigate the strength of chromatic symmetric homology as a graph invariant. Chromatic symmetric homology is a lift of the chromatic symmetric function for graphs to a homological setting, and its Frobenius characteristic is a q,t generalization of the chromatic symmetric function. We exhibit three pairs of graphs where each pair has the same chromatic symmetric function but distinct homology. We also show that integral chromatic symmetric homology contains torsion, and based on computations, conjecture that Z_2-torsion in bigrading (1,0) detects nonplanarity in the graph.

Though verified on graphs of order up to twenty-nine, this result has been proved only for certain subclasses of trees.
