The interaction between graphene and substrates provides a viable routes to enhance functionality of both materials. Depending on the nature of electronic interaction at the interface, the electron band structure of graphene is strongly influenced, allowing us to make use the intrinsic properties of graphene or to design additional functionality in graphene. Here, we present an angle-resolved photoemission study on the interaction between graphene and a platinum substrate. The formation of an interface between graphene and platinum leads to a strong deviation in the electronic structure of graphene not only from its freestanding form but also from the behavior observed on typical metals. The combined study on the experimental and theoretical electron band structure unveils the unique electronic properties of graphene on a platinum substrate, which singles out graphene/platinum as a model system investigating graphene on a metallic substrate with strong interaction.
We investigate the influence of SiO2, Au, Ag, Cu, and Pt substrates on the Raman spectrum of graphene. Experiments reveal particularly strong modifications to the intensity, position, width, and shape of the Raman signal of graphene on platinum, compared to that of suspended graphene. The modifications strongly depend on the relative orientation of the graphene and platinum lattices. These observations are theoretically investigated and shown to originate from hybridization of electronic states in graphene and d-orbitals in platinum. It is expected that, quite generally, hybridization between …
We report thermal control of mode hybridization between the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and a planar resonator (notch filter) working at 4.74 GHz. The chosen magnetic material is a ferrimagnetic insulator (Yttrium Iron Garnet: YIG) covered by 6 nm of platinum (Pt). A current induced heating method has been used in order to enhance the temperature of the YIG/Pt system. The device permits us to control the transmission spectra and the magnon-photon coupling strength at room temperature. These experimental findings reveal potentially applicable tunable microwave filtering function.
In recent years, various doping methods for epitaxial graphene have been demonstrated through atom substitution and adsorption. Here we observe by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) a coupling-induced Dirac cone renormalization when depositing small amounts of Ti onto epitaxial graphene on SiC. We obtain a remarkably high doping efficiency and a readily tunable carrier velocity simply by changing the amount of deposited Ti. First-principles theoretical calculations show that a strong lateral (non-vertical) orbital coupling leads to an efficient doping of graphene by hybridizing …
We have investigated the structural and electronic properties of phosphorescent planar platinum(II) complexes at the interface of Au(111) with submolecular resolution using combined scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy as well as density functional theory. Our analysis shows that molecule-substrate coupling and lateral intermolecular interactions are weak. While the ligand orbitals remain essentially unchanged upon contact to the substrate, we found modified electronic behavior at the Pt atom due to local hybridization and charge transfer to the substrate. Thus, this novel class of p…
Epitaxial growth of graphene on transition metal substrates is an important route for obtaining large scale graphene. However, the interaction between graphene and the substrate often leads to multiple orientations, distorted graphene band structure, large doping and strong electron-phonon coupling. Here we report the growth of monolayer graphene with high crystalline quality on Pt(111) substrate by using a very low concentration of an internal carbon source with high annealing temperature. The controlled growth leads to electronically decoupled graphene: it is nearly charge neutral and has ex…
We report the synthesis and crystal structures of three new superconducting iron-platinum arsenides (CaFe1-xPtxAs)10Pt4-yAs8 (x = 0-0.15, y = 0-0.4). The structures are stacking variants of FeAs- and slightly puckered Pt4-yAs8-layers with square coordinated platinum separated by calcium-layers, respectively. Arsenic atoms in the Pt4-yAs8-layers form (As2)4- dumbbells according to Zintl's concept, providing charge balance in (Ca2+Fe2+As3-)10(Pt2+)3[(As2)4-]4. Superconductivity was observed at 13-35 K. We suggest that the highest Tc above 30 K occurs in the 1048 phase with clean FeAs-layers that…
We report the complex magnetic phase diagram and electronic structure of Cr2(Te1-xWx)O6 systems. While compounds with different x values possess the same crystal structure, they display different magnetic structures below and above xc = 0.7, where both the transition temperature TN and sublattice magnetization (Ms) reach a minimum. Unlike many known cases where magnetic interactions are controlled either by injection of charge carriers or by structural distortion induced via chemical doping, in the present case it is achieved by tuning the orbital hybridization between Cr 3d and O 2p orbitals …
The recent observation of superconductivity in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ has raised fundamental questions about the hierarchy of the underlying electronic structure. Calculations suggest that this system falls in the Mott-Hubbard regime, rather than the charge-transfer configuration of other nickel oxides and the superconducting cuprates. Here, we use state-of-the-art, locally-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy to directly probe the Mott-Hubbard character of Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$. Upon doping, we observe emergent hybridization reminiscent of the Zhang-Rice singlet via the oxygen-pr…
Nitrogen doping of the carbon is an important method to improve the performance and durability of catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells by platinum-nitrogen and carbon-nitrogen bonds. This study shows that p-phenyl groups and graphitic N acting bridges linking platinum and the graphene/carbon black (the ratio graphene/carbon black=2/3) hybrid support materials achieved the average size of platinum nanoparticles with (4.88 +/- 1.79) nm. It improved the performance of the lower-temperature hydrogen fuel cell up to 0.934 W cm-2 at 0.60 V, which is 1.55 times greater than that of comme…
We theoretically investigate the possibility of establishing ferromagnetism in the topological insulator Bi2Se3 via magnetic doping of 3d transition metal elements. The formation energies, charge states, band structures, and magnetic properties of doped Bi2Se3 are studied using first-principles calculations within density functional theory. Our results show that Bi substitutional sites are energetically more favorable than interstitial sites for single impurities. Detailed electronic structure analysis reveals that Cr and Fe doped materials are still insulating in the bulk but the intrinsic ba…
We demonstrate a simple technique to transfer CVD-grown graphene from copper and platinum substrates using a soak-and-peel delamination technique utilizing only hot deionized water. The lack of chemical etchants results in cleaner CVD graphene films minimizing unintentional doping, as confirmed by Raman and electrical measurements. The process allows the reuse of substrates and hence can enable the use of oriented substrates for growth of higher quality graphene, and is an inherently inexpensive and scalable process for large-area production.
Epitaxial thin films of Fe doped SrTiO3 have been studied by the use of resonant photoemission. This technique allowed to identify contributions of the Fe and Ti originating electronic states to the valence band. Two valence states of iron Fe2+ and Fe3+, detected on the base of XAS spectra, appeared to form quite different contributions to the valence band of SrTiO3. The electronic states within the in-gap region can be attributed to Fe2+, Fe3+ and Ti3+ ions. Fe2+ originating states which can be connected to the presence of oxygen vacancies form a broad band reaching binding energies of about …
Properties of transition metal (TM) doped single wall (8,0) SiC nanotube is investigated using first principles density functional theory as implemented within quantum espresso code. The properties studied are electronic, optical, and hydrogen storage prospect, while the transition metals used in the doping are Iron, Manganese, and Cobalt. The outcomes show that ferromagnetic ordering better describes the magnetic order within the doping process. The dopings result in half-metallic property. Hybridization between TM-3d and C-2p near Fermi-level region contributes to occurrence of the half-meta…
Penta-graphene is a quasi-two-dimensional carbon allotrope consisting of a pentagonal lattice in which both sp2 and sp3-like carbons are present. Unlike graphene, penta-graphene exhibits a non-zero bandgap, which opens the possibility of its use in optoelectronic applications. However, as the observed bandgap is large, gap tuning strategies such as doping are required. In this work, density functional theory calculations are used to determine the effects of the different number of line defects of substitutional nitrogen or silicon atoms on the penta-graphene electronic behavior. Our results sh…
The magnetic and electronic properties of strontium titanate with different carbon dopant configurations are explored using first-principles calculations with a generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and the GGA+U approach. Our results show that the structural stability, electronic properties and magnetic properties of C-doped SrTiO3 strongly depend on the distance between carbon dopants. In both GGA and GGA+U calculations, the doping structure is mostly stable with a nonmagnetic feature when the carbon dopants are nearest neighbors, which can be ascribed to the formation of a C-C dimer pair…
WTe$_2$ is a multifunctional quantum material exhibiting numerous emergent phases in which tuning of the carrier density plays an important role. Here we demonstrate two non-monotonic changes in the electronic structure of WTe$_2$ upon \textit{in-situ} electron doping. The first phase transition is interpreted in terms of a shear displacement of the top WTe$_2$ layer, which realizes a local crystal structure not normally found in bulk WTe$_2$. The second phase transition is associated with stronger interactions between the dopant atoms and the host, both through hybridization and electric fiel…
The way doping affects the spin wave stiffness and the exchange stiffness of permalloy (Py) is investigated via ab-initio calculations, using the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Green function formalism. By considering various types of dopants of different nature (V, Gd, and Pt), we are able to draw general conclusions. To describe the trends of the stiffness with doping is it sufficient to account for the exchange coupling between nearest neighbors. The polarizability of the impurities is not an important factor for the spin wave stiffness. Rather, the decisive factor is the hybridization betwee…

We report the systematic study of structural, magnetic and electrical transport properties of $Y_{2-x}Bi_xIr_2O_7$ (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) pyrochlore iridates. The chemical doping enhances electrical conductivity and antiferromagnetic correlation substantially. The replacement of non-magnetic $Y^{3+}$ ion with non-magnetic $Bi^{3+}$ in $Y_2Ir_2O_7$ tends to reduce the octahedral distortion thus enhancing the antiferromagnetic correlation. Raman spectroscopy shows that the $Ir-O$ bond contract slightly and the $R-O'$ bond turn longer as disorder and phononic oscillation are reduced with $Bi$ d…
We employ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to investigate the electronic structures of two rotational variants of epitaxial, single-layer graphene on Ir(111). As grown, the more-abundant R0 variant is nearly charge-neutral, with strong hybridization between graphene and Ir bands near the Fermi level. The graphene Fermi surface and its replicas exactly coincide with Van Hove singularities in the Ir Fermi surface. Sublattice symmetry breaking introduces a small gap-inducing potential at the Dirac crossing, which is revealed by n-doping the graphene using K atoms. The energy gaps…
A first-principles investigation of the electronic and quantum transport properties of double-walled carbon nanotubes doped with nitrogen and boron atoms is presented. Concentric nanotube sidewalls separated by the typical graphitic van der Waals bond distance are found to strongly interact upon incorporation of doping atoms in the hexagonal networks. The local perturbation caused by the doping atoms extends over both shells due to a hybridization of their electronic states, yielding a reduction of the backscattering efficiency as compared with two independent single-walled nanotubes. A multi-…
The dissociation of hydrogen molecules on the γ-U(100) surface is systematically studied with the density functional theory method. Through potential energy surface calculations, we find that hydrogen molecules can dissociate without any barriers on the clean γ-U(100) surface. After careful electronic analysis, it is found that charge transfer between the hydrogen s and uranium d electronic states causes the dissociation, which is quite different from the dissociation of hydrogen molecules on other actinide metal surfaces. Considering that doping of 3d transition metal atoms can stabilize the …
Using the slave-rotor mean-field theory, we study the formation of Kondo resonance in graphene induced from vacancies. At the Dirac neutrality point, we find acritical hybridization strength beyond which the Kondo resonance takes place, despite vanishing density of states. We also find that the line-shapes of the Kondo peak are entirely different from Lorentzian shown in normal metallic hosts. The dependence of Kondo temperature on the effective hybridization parameter of the spinon field turns out to be linear in contrast to the quadratic dependence in normal metals. Upon doping we find stron…
We report the production and characterization of a form of amorphous carbon films with sp/sp2 hybridization (atomic fraction of sp hybridized species > 20%) where the predominant sp bonding appears to be (=C=C=)n cumulene. Vibrational and electronic properties have been studied by in situ Raman spectroscopy and electrical conductivity measurements. Cumulenic chains are substantially stable for temperatures lower than 250 K and they influence the electrical transport properties of the sp/sp2 carbon through a self-doping mechanism by pinning the Fermi level closer to one of the mobility gap edge…
Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we investigate the geometries, electronic structures, and thermodynamic stabilities of substitutionally doped phosphorene sheets with group III, IV, V, and VI elements. We find that the electronic properties of phosphorene are drastically modified by the number of valence electrons in dopant atoms. The dopants with even number of valence electrons enable the doped phosphorenes to have a metallic feature, while the dopants with odd number of valence electrons keep the semiconducting feature with a larger band gap than the undoped ph…
By means of a multi-scale first-principles approach, a description of the local electronic structure of two-dimensional and narrow phosphorene sheets with various types of modifications is presented. First, a rational argument based on the geometry of the pristine and modified P network, and supported by the Wannier functions formalism is introduced to describe a hybridization model of the P atomic orbitals. {\it Ab initio} calculations show that non-isoelectronic foreign atoms form quasi-bound states at varying energy levels and create different polarization states depending on the number of …
Using \textit{ab initio} calculation, we investigate systematically the structural and electronic properties of Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.25, 0.50). Here, projector augmented wave approach (PAW) implemented in the Vienna \textit{ab initio} simulation package (VASP) within generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation functional has been used. In this article, it is reported that though Ni$_{2}$NbSn and Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.25}$Sn$_{0.75}$ have no structural transformation, Ni$_{2}$Nb$_{1.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$ can transform to tetragonal structure from cubic L2$_{1}$ ph…
We report a systematic study of the $5d$-electron-doped system Ce(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.15$). With increasing $x$, the orthorhombic $b$~axis decreases slightly while accompanying changes in $a$ and $c$ leave the unit cell volume almost unchanged. Inelastic neutron scattering, along with thermal and transport measurements, reveal that for the Kondo semiconductor CeFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, the low-temperature energy gap which is proposed to be a consequence of strong $c \mhyphen f$ hybridization, is suppressed by a small amount of Ir substitution for Fe, and that the system ad…
Density-functional studies of the electron states in the dilute magnetic semiconductor GaN:Mn reveal major differences for the case of the Mn impurity at the substitutional site Mn_Ga versus the interstitial site Mn_I. The splitting of the two-fold and the three-fold degenerate Mn(d)states in the gap are reversed between the two cases, which is understood in terms of the symmetry-controlled hybridization with the neighboring atoms. In contrast to Mn_Ga, which acts as a deep acceptor, Mn_I acts as a donor, suggesting the formation of Coulomb-stabilized complexes such as (Mn_Ga Mn_I Mn_Ga), wher…
The correlated electronic structure of the infinite-layer compounds NdNiO$_2$ and SrCuO$_2$ at stoichiometry and with finite hole doping is compared. Key differences are elucidated from an advanced first-principles many-body perspective. Contrary to the charge-transfer insulating cuprate, the self-doped nickelate remains non-insulating even for large interaction strength, though the Ni-$d_{x^2-y^2}$ spectral weight is also gapped in that limit. Hybridization between Ni$(3d)$ and Nd$(5d)$ is crucial for the appearance of the self-doping band. Upon realistic hole doping, Sr$_{1-y}$CuO$_2$ shows …
Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) is notable as a highly tunable platform for investigating strongly correlated phenomena such as high-$T_c$ superconductivity and quantum spin liquids, due to easy control of doping level through gating and sensitive dependence of the magic angle on hydrostatic pressure. Experimental observations of correlated insulating states, unconventional superconductivity and ferromagnetism in MATBG indicate that this system exhibits rich exotic phases. In this work, using density functional theory calculations in conjunction with the effective screening medium…
We theoretically explore the crystal structures of K$_x$picene, for which a new aromatic superconductivity has recently been discovered for $x=3$, by systematically performing first-principles full structural optimization covering the concentration range $x=1$-4. The crystal symmetry (space group) of the pristine picene is shown to be preserved in all the optimized structures despite significant deformations of each picene molecule and vast rearrangements of herringbone array of molecules. For K$_x$picene ($x=1$-4) optimization indicates that (i) multiple structures exist in some cases, and (i…
he structural, transport, magnetic and optical properties of the double perovskite $A_2$CrWO$_6$ with $A=\text{Sr, Ba, Ca}$ have been studied. By varying the alkaline earth ion on the $A$ site, the influence of steric effects on the Curie temperature $T_C$ and the saturation magnetization has been determined. A maximum $T_C=458$ K was found for Sr$_2$CrWO$_6$ having an almost undistorted perovskite structure with a tolerance factor $f\simeq 1$. For Ca$_2$CrWO$_6$ and Ba$_2$CrWO$_6$ structural changes result in a strong reduction of $T_C$. Our study strongly suggests that for the double perovsk…
We have measured the optical constants of GaMnAs from 0.62 eV to 6 eV, using spectroscopic ellipsometry. The second derivatives of the dielectric function are examined through a critical point analysis. The E1 critical point shifts to higher energies with increased doping of Mn, while all other critical points appear unaffected. The evolution of the critical points results from the interplay between band gap renormalization from ionized impurities and sp-d hybridization of the Mn induced impurity band and GaAs valence and conductions bands.

The stage-1 FeCl3-graphite intercalation compounds present diversified electronic properties due to the intercalant. The first-principles calculations on VASP are utilized to analyze the essential properties, such as the geometric structures, spatial charge distributions, charge variations, band structures and density of states. The density of states displays full information for an explanation of the hybridizations with the special structures van Hove singularities on it. The van Hove singularities in…

Understanding the magnetic properties of graphenic nanostructures is instrumental in future spintronics applications. These magnetic properties are known to depend crucially on the presence of defects. Here we review our recent theoretical studies using density functional calculations on two types of defects in carbon nanostructures: Substitutional doping with transition metals, and sp$^3$-type defects created by covalent functionalization with organic and inorganic molecules. We focus on such defects because they can be used to create and control magnetism in graphene-based materials. Our mai…
We study the effects of metallic doping on the electronic properties of graphene using density functional theory in the local density approximation in the presence of a local charging energy (LDA+U). The electronic properties are sensitive to whether graphene is doped with alkali or transition metals. We estimate the the charge transfer from a single layer of Potassium on top of graphene in terms of the local charging energy of the graphene sheet. The coating of graphene with a non-magnetic layer of Palladium, on the other hand, can lead to a magnetic instability in coated graphene due to the …
The critical temperature (${T}_\text{c}$) of superconductors varies a lot. The factors governing the ${T}_\text{c}$ may hold key clues to understand the nature of the superconductivity. Thereby, ${T}_\text{c}$-involved correlations, such as Matthias laws, Uemura law, and cuprates doping phase diagrams, have been of great concern. However, the electronic interaction being responsible for the carriers pairing in high-${T}_\text{c}$ superconductors is still not clear, which calls for more comprehensive analyses of the experimental data in history. In this work, we propose a novel perspective for …
Using density functional based LDA+U method and linear-response theory, we study the magnetic exchange interactions of the superconductor Nd{1-x}Sr{x}NiO2. Our calculated nearest-neighbor exchange constant J1=82 meV is large, weakly affected by doping and is only slightly smaller than that found in the sister compound CaCuO2. We however find that the hole doping significantly enhances the inter--layer exchange coupling as it affects the magnetic moment of the Ni-3d{3z2-r2} orbital. This can be understood in terms of small hybridization of Ni-3d{3z2-r2} within the NiO2 plane which results in a …
