WTe$_2$ is a multifunctional quantum material exhibiting numerous emergent phases in which tuning of the carrier density plays an important role. Here we demonstrate two non-monotonic changes in the electronic structure of WTe$_2$ upon \textit{in-situ} electron doping. The first phase transition is interpreted in terms of a shear displacement of the top WTe$_2$ layer, which realizes a local crystal structure not normally found in bulk WTe$_2$. The second phase transition is associated with stronger interactions between the dopant atoms and the host, both through hybridization and electric field. These results demonstrate that electron-doping can drive structural and electronics changes in bulk WTe$_2$ with implications for realizing nontrivial band structure changes in heterointerfaces and devices.
Layered transition metal dichalcogenides MoTe$_2$ and WTe$_2$ share almost similar lattice constants as well as topological electronic properties except their structural phase transitions. While the former shows a first-order phase transition between monoclinic and orthorhombic structures, the latter does not. Using a recently proposed van der Waals density functional method, we investigate structural stability of the two materials and uncover that the disparate phase transitions originate from delicate differences between their interlayer bonding states near the Fermi energy. By exploiting th…
Natural hyperbolic two-dimensional systems are a fascinating class of materials that could open alternative pathways to the manipulation of plasmon propagation and light-matter interactions. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the optical response in T$_d\,$-WTe$_2$ by means of density-functional and many-body perturbation theories. We show how monolayer WTe$_2$ with in-plane anisotropy sustains hyperbolic plasmon polaritons, which can be tuned via chemical doping and strain. The latter is able to extend the hyperbolic regime toward the near infrared with low losses. Moreover, with a mod…
We investigate the generation and temperature-induced evolution of optically-driven spin photocurrents in WTe$_2$ and MoTe$_2$. By correlating the scattering-plane dependence of the spin photocurrents with the symmetry analysis, we find that a sizeable spin photocurrent can be controllably driven along the chain direction by optically exciting the system in the high-symmetry $y$-$z$ plane. Temperature dependence measurements show that pronounced variations in the spin photocurrent emerge at temperatures that coincide with the onset of anomalies in their transport and optical properties. The de…

Using first-principles calculation methods, we reveal a series of phase transitions as a function of electron doping in single-layer 1T$'$-MoTe$_2$ and 1T$'$-WTe$_2$ exhibiting quantum spin Hall (QSH) edge states without doping. As increasing doping, we show that a phonon mediated superconducting phase first realizes and is followed by a charge density wave (CDW) phase with a nonsymmorphic lattice symmetry. The newly found CDW phase exhibits Dirac or Weyl energy bands with a spin-orbit coupling in case of a fractional band filling and re-enters into topological insulating phase with fully fill…
Recently, much interest has emerged in fluid-like electric charge transport in various solid-state systems. The hydrodynamic behavior of the electronic fluid reveals itself as a decrease of the electrical resistance with increasing temperature (the Gurzhi effect) in narrow conducting channels, polynomial scaling of the resistance as a function of the channel width, substantial violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law supported by the emergence of the Poiseuille flow. Similarly to whirlpools in flowing water, the viscous electronic flow generates vortices, resulting in abnormal sign-changing electr…
In recent years, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered great interest as topological materials -- monolayers of centrosymmetric $β$-phase TMDs have been identified as 2D topological insulators (TIs), and bulk crystals of noncentrosymmetric $γ$-phase MoTe$_2$ and WTe$_2$ have been identified as type-II Weyl semimetals. However, ARPES and STM probes of these TMDs have revealed huge, "arc-like" surface states that overwhelm, and are sometimes mistaken for, the much smaller topological surface Fermi arcs of bulk type-II Weyl points. In this letter, we use first-principles calculati…
Rhombohedral stacked multilayer graphene displays the occurrence of a magnetic surface state at low temperatures. Recent angular resolved photoemission experiments demonstrate the robustness of the magnetic state in long sequences of ABC graphene. Here, by using first-principles calculations, we show that field-effect doping of these graphene multilayers induces a perfect half-metallic behaviour with 100% of spin current polarization already at dopings attainable in conventional field effect transistors with solid state dielectrics. Our work demonstrates the realisability of a new kind of spin…
Free electrons can screen out long-range Coulomb interaction and destroy the polar distortion in some ferroelectric materials, whereas the coexistence of polar distortion and metallicity were found in several non-central-symmetric metals (NCSMs). Therefore, the mechanisms and designing of NCSMs have attracted great interests. In this work, by first-principles calculation, we found the polar distortion in the lone-pair driven ferroelectric material PbTiO$_3$ can not only persist, but also increase with electron doping. We further analyzed the mechanisms of the persisting of the polar distortion…
Using the first-principles density functional approach, we investigate Ca$_2$FeOsO$_6$, a material of double perovskite structure synthesized recently. According to the calculations, Ca$_2$FeOsO$_6$ is a ferrimagnetic Mott-insulator influenced by the cooperative effect of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Coulomb interactions of Fe-3$d$ and Os-5$d$ electrons, as well as the crystal field. When Fe is replaced with Ni, the system exhibits half metallic (HM) states desirable for spintronic applications. In [Ca$_2$Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$OsO$_6$]$_2$, HM ferrimagnetism is observed with $μ_{\rm tot}=2μ_{\rm B}…
To understand newly discovered superconductivity in Fe--based systems, we investigate electronic structure and magnetic properties of Fe$_{1+x}$Te using first--principles density functional calculations. While the undoped FeTe has the same Fermi surface nested at ($π,π$) as in Fe arsenides, doping by $\sim 0.5$ electrons reveals a novel square--type Fermi surface showing a strong ($π, 0$) nesting and leading to a different magnetic structure. Our result strongly supports the same mechanism of superconductivity in chalcogenides as in the arsenides, reconciling theory to existing experiments. Ca…
We study surface charge transfer doping of exfoliated black phosphorus (bP) flakes by copper using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) at room temperature. The tunneling spectra reveal a gap in correspondence of Cu islands, which is attributed to Coulomb blockade phenomena. Moreover, using line spectroscopic measurements across small copper islands, we exploit the potential of the local investigation, showing that the n-type doping effect of copper on bP is short-ranged. These experimental results are substantiated by first-principles simulations, which quantify the role…
We systematically investigate the effect of strain and doping on the polar metal phase in lithium osmate, LiOsO$_3$, using first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that the polar metal phase in LiOsO$_3$ can be controlled by biaxial strain. Based on density functional calculations, we show that a compressive biaxial strain enhances the stability of the polar $R3c$ phase. On the other hand, a tensile biaxial strain favors the centrosymmetric $R\overline{3}c$ structure. Thus, strain emerges as a promising control parameter over polar metallicity in this material. We uncover a strain-driven …
Recent experiments have shown that transition metal oxide heterostructures such as SrTiO$_3$-based interfaces, exhibit large, gate tunable, spintronic responses. Our theoretical study showcases key factors controlling the magnitude of the conversion, measured by the inverse Edelstein and Spin Hall effects, and their evolution with respect to an electrostatic doping. The origin of the response can be linked to spin-orbital textures. These stem from the broken inversion symmetry at the interface which produces an unusual form of the interfacial spin-orbit coupling, provided a bulk atomic spin-or…
Transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit rich phase diagrams dominated by the interplay of superconductivity and charge density waves, which often result in anomalies in the electric transport properties. Here, we employ the ionic gating technique to realize a tunable, non-volatile organic ion intercalation in bulk single crystals of molybdenum disulphide (MoS$_{2}$). We demonstrate that this gate-driven organic ion intercalation induces a strong electron doping in the system without changing the pristine $2H$ crystal symmetry and triggers the emergence of a re-entrant insulator-to-metal trans…
We perform a thorough study of an extended Hubbard model featuring local and nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion. Using dynamical mean-field theory we investigated the zero temperature phase-diagram of this model as a function of the chemical doping. The interplay between local and non-local interaction drives a variety of phase-transitions connecting two distinct charge-ordered insulators, i.e., half-filled and quarter-filled, a charge-ordered metal and a Mott insulating phase. We characterize these transitions and the relative stability of the solutions and we show that the two interactions c…
The filled-skutterudite compound CePt4Ge12 is situated close to the border between intermediate-valence of Ce and heavy-fermion behavior. Substitution of Ge by Sb drives the system into a strongly correlated and ultimately upon further increasing the Sb concentration into an antiferromagnetically ordered state. Our experiments evidence a delicate interplay of emerging Kondo physics and the formation of a local 4f moment. An extended non-Fermi-liquid region, which can be understood in the framework of a Kondo-disorder model, is observed. Band-structure calculations support the conclusion that t…
In this Comment, using Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent-potential approximation method in the atomic-sphere approximation (KKR-ASA CPA) to describe the effects of disorder due to excess Fe in FeTe alloys, we show that (i) the rigid-band approximation is inadequate to describe the effects of disorder and its application leads to an incorrect description of the underlying physics, (ii) the rigid-band energy shift of ~0.76 eV for going from FeTe to Fe_{1.068}Te (or Fe_{1.063}Te), as obtained by Han and Savrasov (Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 067001(2009)), is inconsistent with our FP-LMTO as well as the K…

We study the organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) performance of the ladder polymer, poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) in an attempt to better understand how an apparently hydrophobic side-chain-free polymer is able to operate as an OECT with favorable redox kinetics in an aqueous environment. We examine two BBLs of different molecular masses from different sources. Both BBLs show significant film swelling during the initial reduction step. By combining electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (eQCM) gravimetry, in-operando atomic force microscopy (AFM), and both ex-situ and…
At the few-atom-thick limit, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit a host of attractive electronic optical, and structural properties. The possibility to pattern these properties has a great impact on applied and fundamental research. Here, we demonstrate spatial control over the light emission, lattice deformation, and hydrogen storage in bulk TMDs. By low-energy proton irradiation, we create uniquely favorable conditions for the production and accumulation of molecular hydrogen just one or few monolayers beneath the crystal basal plane of bulk WS2, WSe2, WTe2, MoSe2, and MoS2 sampl…
In two-dimensional layered quantum materials, the stacking order of the layers determines both the crystalline symmetry and electronic properties such as the Berry curvature, topology and electron correlation. Electrical stimuli can influence quasiparticle interactions and the free-energy landscape, making it possible to dynamically modify the stacking order and reveal hidden structures that host different quantum properties. Here we demonstrate electrically driven stacking transitions that can be applied to design nonvolatile memory based on Berry curvature in few-layer WTe$_2$. The interplay…
Neutron single crystal diffraction and rotational anisotropy optical second harmonic generation data are presented resolving the nature of the structural distortion realized in electron-doped (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ with $x=0.035$ and $x=0.071$. Once electrons are introduced into the bilayer spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, previous studies have identified the appearance of a low temperature structural distortion and have suggested the presence of a competing electronic instability in the phase diagram of this material. Our measurements resolve a lowering of the …
A series of calculations on MgB2 and related isoelectronic systems indicates that the layer of Mg(2+) ions lowers the non-bonding B "pi" (p_z) bands relative to the bonding "sigma" (sp_xp_y) bands compared to graphite, causing sigma --> pi charge transfer and sigma band doping of 0.13 holes/cell. Due to their two dimensionality the sigma bands contribute strongly to the Fermi level density of states. Calculated deformation potentials of Gamma point phonons identify the B bond stretching modes as dominating the electron-phonon coupling. Superconductivity driven by sigma band holes is consistent…
We show that the HF acid etch commonly used to prepare SrTiO3(001) for heteroepitaxial growth of complex oxides results in a non-negligible level of F doping within the terminal surface layer of TiO2. Using a combination of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanned angle x-ray photoelectron diffraction, we determine that on average ~13 % of the O anions in the surface layer are replaced by F, but that F does not occupy O sites in deeper layers. Despite this perturbation to the surface, the Fermi level remains unpinned, and the surface-state density, which determines the amount of band bendi…
Doping at the rare-earth site by divalent alkaline-earth ions in perovskite lattice has witnessed a variety of magnetic and electronic orders with spatially correlated charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Here, we report an antisite disorder driven spontaneous exchange bias effect as a result of hole carrier (Sr2+) doping in La2-xSrxCoMnO6 (0 < x < 1) double perovskites. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy have evidenced an increase in disorder with the increase of Sr content up to x = 0.5 and thereby decreases from x = 0.5 to 1. X-ray absorption spectroscopy has revealed that onl…
The archetypical strongly correlated Mott-phenomena compound V2O3 is known to show a paramagnetic metal-insulator transition driven by doping with chromium atoms and/or (negative) pressure. Via charge self-consistent density-functional theory+dynamical mean-field theory calculations we demonstrate that these two routes cannot be understood as equivalent. To this end, the explicit description of Cr-doped V2O3 by means of supercell calculations and the virtual crystal approximation is performed. Already the sole introduction of chromium's additional electron to the system is shown to modify the …
Finescale probes of many complex electronic materials have revealed a non-uniform nanoworld of sign-varying textures in strain, charge and magnetization, forming meandering ribbons, stripe segments or droplets. We introduce and simulate a Ginzburg-Landau model for a structural transition, with strains coupling to charge and magnetization. Charge doping acts as a local stress that deforms surrounding unit cells without generating defects. This seemingly innocuous constraint of elastic `compatibility', in fact induces crucial anisotropic long-range forces of unit-cell discrete symmetry, that int…
The interaction of Mn with Ge quantum dots (QD), which are bounded by {105} facets, and the strained Ge wetting layer (WL), terminated by a (001) surface, is investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Mn is deposited on the Ge QD and WL surface in sub-monolayer concentrations, and subsequently annealed up to temperature of 400 C. Bonding and surface topography were measured with STM during the annealing process. Mn forms flat islands on the Ge {105} facet, whose shape and position is guided by the rebonded step reconstruction. The images show a hybridization of Mn-d band and empty …
Nominally 45 nm GaN:Mg/ 5 nm (Ga,Mn)N / 45 nm GaN:Mg trilayers structures prepared by molecular beam epitaxy on GaN-buffered Al2O3 substrates are investigated to verify whether the indirect co-doping by holes from the cladding layers can alter the spin-spin interaction in (Ga,Mn)N. The four investigated structures, differing with the Mg doping level, are carefully characterized at the nanoscale by HRTEM, EDX, and by SIMS. HRTEM decisively excluded a presence of foreign Mn-rich phases. The structures, up to medium Mg doping, show no Mg over-doping effects. Magnetic studies of these structures a…
The quest for topological states in strongly correlated materials is challenging but essential from fundamental research and application perspectives. The magnetic Weyl semimetal (WSM) state in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn emerges with strong electronic correlations, offering an intriguing arena for exploring the interplay between Weyl fermions and correlation physics. One prominent characteristic of the WSM state is the chiral anomaly, yet the potential effects of electronic correlations on the chiral anomaly remain unexplored. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the in-plane magn…
We investigated the influence of oxygen over-stoichiometry on apical oxygen disorder and magnetic correlations in Nd2NiO4+d (d~0.11) in the temperature range of 2-300 K by means of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, neutron single crystal and powder diffraction studies, combined with macroscopic magnetic measurements. In the investigated temperature range, the compound crystalizes in a tetragonal commensurate structure with the P42/ncm space group with excess oxygen atoms occupy the 4b (3/4 1/4 1/4) interstitial sites, coordinated by four apical oxygen atoms. Large and anisotropic thermal d…
Two-dimensional materials represented by graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides undergo charge transfer (CT) processes and become hole-doped in strong mineral acids. Nonetheless, their mechanisms remain unclear or controversial. This work proposes and verifies two distinctive CT channels in sulfuric acids, respectively driven by oxygen reduction reaction involving O2/H2O redox couples and reduction of bisulfate or related species. Acid-induced changes in the charge density of graphene were in-situ quantified as a function of oxygen content using Raman spectroscopy. At acid concentration…
We present a high-pressure investigation of the semiconductor-to-metal transition in MoS2 and WS2 carried out by synchrotron-based far-infrared spectroscopy, to reconcile the controversial estimates of the metallization pressure found in the literature and gain new insight into the mechanisms ruling this electronic transition. Two spectral descriptors are found indicative of the onset of metallicity and of the origin of the free carriers in the metallic state: the absorbance spectral weight, whose abrupt increase defines the metallization pressure threshold, and the asymmetric lineshape of the…
We investigate the thermoelectric propeties of the electron-doped FeAs$_2$ both experimentally and theoretically. Electrons are doped by partially substituting Se for As, which leads to a metallic behavior in the resistivity. A Seebeck coefficient of about $-$200 $μ$V/K is reached at 300 K for 1% doping, and about $-$120 $μ$V/K even at 5% doping. The origin of this large Seebeck coefficient despite the metallic conductivity is analyzed from a band structure point of view. The first-principles band calculation reveals the presence of a pudding-mold type band just above the band gap, somewhat si…
Using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy we demonstrate that photoexcitation transforms monoclinic VO$_2$ quasi-instantaneously into a metal. Thereby, we exclude an 80 femtosecond structural bottleneck for the photoinduced electronic phase transition of VO$_2$. First-principles many-body perturbation theory calculations reveal a high sensitivity of the VO$_2$ bandgap to variations of the dynamically screened Coulomb interaction, supporting a fully electronically driven isostructral insulator-to-metal transition. We thus conclude that the ultrafast band structure renormalizati…
Strongly correlated materials often undergo a Mott metal-insulator transition, which is tipically first-order, as a function of control parameters like pressure. Upon doping, rich phase diagrams with competing instabilities are found. Yet, the conceptual link between the interaction-driven Mott transition and the finite-doping behavior lacks a clear connection with the theory of critical phenomena. In a prototypical case of a first-order Mott transition the surface associated with the equation of state for the homogeneous system is "folded" so that in a range of parameters stable metallic and …
