Let $ X = Γ\setminus \mathbb{H} $ be a non-elementary geometrically finite hyperbolic surface and let $ δ$ denote the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set $ Λ(Γ) $. We prove that for every $ \varepsilon > 0 $ the surface $ X $ admits a finite cover $ X' $ such that the Selberg zeta function associated to $ X' $ has a zero $ s\neq δ$ with $ | δ- s| < \varepsilon $. For $ δ> \frac{1}{2} $ we exploit the combinatorial interpretation of spectral gap in terms of expander graphs. For $ δ\leq \frac{1}{2} $ the proof is based on the thermodynamic formalism approach for L-functions associated to hyperbolic surfaces and an analogue of the Artin-Takagi formula for these L-functions.
This paper considers the propagation of TE-modes in photonic crystal waveguides. The waveguide is created by introducing a linear defect into a periodic background medium. Both the periodic background problem and the perturbed problem are modelled by a divergence type equation. A feature of our analysis is that we allow discontinuities in the coefficients of the operator, which is required to model many photonic crystals. Using the Floquet-Bloch theory in negative order Sobolev spaces, we characterize the precise number of eigenvalues created by the line defect in terms of the band functions o…
Let $Λ$ be a subgroup of an arithmetic lattice in SO(n+1,1). The quotient $\mathbb{H}^{n+1} / Λ$ has a natural family of congruence covers corresponding to primes in some ring of integers. We establish a super-strong approximation result for Zariski-dense $Λ$ with some additional regularity and thickness properties. Concretely, this asserts a quantitative spectral gap for the Laplacian operators on the congruence covers. This generalizes results of Sarnak and Xue (1991) and Gamburd (2002).
Let $G$ be $\SO(n,1)$ or $\SU(n,1)$ and let $Γ\subset G$ denote an arithmetic lattice. The hyperbolic manifold $Γ\backslash \calH$ comes with a natural family of covers, coming from the congruence subgroups of $Γ$. In many applications, it is useful to have a bound for the spectral gap that is uniform for this family. When $Γ$ is itself a congruence lattice, there are very good bounds coming from known results towards the Ramanujan conjectures. In this paper, we establish an effective bound that is uniform for congruence subgroups of a non-congruence lattice.
In this paper we construct compact manifolds with fixed boundary geometry which admit Riemannian metrics of unit volume with arbitrarily large Steklov spectral gap. We also study the effect of localized conformal deformations that fix the boundary geometry. For instance, we prove that it is possible to make the spectral gap arbitrarily large using conformal deformations which are localized on domains of small measure, as long as the support of the deformations contains and connects each component of the boundary.
We prove that if $X$ is a finite area non-compact hyperbolic surface, then for any $ε>0$, with probability tending to one as $n\to\infty$, a uniformly random degree $n$ Riemannian cover of $X$ has no eigenvalues of the Laplacian in $[0,\frac{1}{4}-ε)$ other than those of $X$, and with the same multiplicities. As a result, using a compactification procedure due to Buser, Burger, and Dodziuk, we settle in the affirmative the question of whether there exist a sequence of closed hyperbolic surfaces with genera tending to infinity and first non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplacian tending to $\frac{1}{…
We give a reformulation of Salem's conjecture about the absence of Salem numbers near one in terms of a uniform spectral gap for certain arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces.
Let $\mathcal{M}=Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}^{d+1}$ be a geometrically finite hyperbolic manifold with critical exponent exceeding $d/2$. We obtain a precise asymptotic expansion of the matrix coefficients for the geodesic flow in $L^2(\mathrm{T}^1(\mathcal{M}))$, with exponential error term essentially as good as the one given by the spectral gap for the Laplace operator on $L^2(\mathcal{M})$ due to Lax and Phillips. Combined with the work of Bourgain, Gamburd, and Sarnak and its generalization by Golsefidy and Varju on expanders, this implies uniform exponential mixing for congruence covers of $\m…
We consider the operator associated to a random walk on finite volume surfaces with hyperbolic cusps. We study the spectral gap (upper and lower bound) associated to this operator and deduce some rate of convergence of the iterated kernel towards its stationary distribution.
In this paper we study $k$-equivariant wave maps from the hyperbolic plane into the $2$-sphere as well as the energy critical equivariant $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills problem on $4$-dimensional hyperbolic space. The latter problem bears many similarities to a $2$-equivariant wave map into a surface of revolution. As in the case of $1$-equivariant wave maps considered in~\cite{LOS1}, both problems admit a family of stationary solutions indexed by a parameter that determines how far the image of the map wraps around the target manifold. Here we show that if the image of a stationary solution is contained …
Let $X$ be a compact connected hyperbolic surface, that is, a closed connected orientable smooth surface with a Riemannian metric of constant curvature -1. For each $n\in\mathbf{N}$, let $X_{n}$ be a random degree-$n$ cover of $X$ sampled uniformly from all degree-$n$ Riemannian covering spaces of $X$. An eigenvalue of $X$ or $X_{n}$ is an eigenvalue of the associated Laplacian operator $Δ_{X}$ or $Δ_{X_{n}}$. We say that an eigenvalue of $X_n$ is new if it occurs with greater multiplicity than in $X$. We prove that for any $\varepsilon>0$, with probability tending to 1 as $n\to\infty$, there …
