We consider a family of steady free-surface flow problems in two dimensions, concentrating on the effect of nonlinearity on the train of gravity waves that appear downstream of a disturbance. By exploiting standard complex variable techniques, these problems are formulated in terms of a coupled system of Bernoulli's equation and an integral equation. When applying a numerical collocation scheme, the Jacobian for the system is dense, as the integral equation forces each of the algebraic equations to depend on each of the unknowns. We present here a strategy for overcoming this challenge, which leads to a numerical scheme that is much more efficient than what is normally employed for these types of problems, allowing for many more grid points over the free surface. In particular, we provide a simple recipe for constructing a sparse approximation to the Jacobian that is used as a preconditioner in a Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov method for solving the nonlinear system. We use this approach to compute numerical results for a variety of prototype problems including flows past pressure distributions, a surface-piercing object and bottom topographies.
Jaynes' maximum entropy (MaxEnt) principle was recently used to give a conditional, local derivation of the ``maximum entropy production'' (MEP) principle, which states that a flow system with fixed flow(s) or gradient(s) will converge to a steady state of maximum production of thermodynamic entropy (R.K. Niven, Phys. Rev. E, in press). The analysis provides a steady state analog of the MaxEnt formulation of equilibrium thermodynamics, applicable to many complex flow systems at steady state. The present study examines the classification of physical systems, with emphasis on the choice of const…
Using a Lyapunov type functional constructed on the basis of thermodynamical arguments we investigate the finite amplitude stability of internal steady flows of viscoelastic fluids described by the Giesekus model. Using the functional we derive bounds on the Reynolds and the Weissenberg number that guarantee the unconditional asymptotic stability of the corresponding steady internal flow, wherein the distance between the steady flow field and the perturbed flow field is measured with the help of the Bures--Wasserstein distance between positive definite matrices. The application of the theoreti…
We numerically investigate the flow structure of periodic steady water waves of fixed relative mass flux propagating on rotational flows with piece-wise constant vorticity. We show that for wave solutions along the global bifurcation diagram the stagnation point can first occur internally or at the bottom, and then again occurs at the crest with further increase in wave height. We observe that the bifurcation diagram has a new branch which is not connected to the trivial solution. Furthermore, we present an in-depth discussion of the results on pressure distributions and particle trajectories …
Steady-state flow of an incompressible fluid in parallel pipes can simultaneously satisfy two contradictory extremum principles in the entropy production, depending on the flow conditions. For a constant total flow rate, the flow can satisfy (i) a pipe network minimum entropy production (MinEP) principle with respect to the flow rates, and (ii) the maximum entropy production (MaxEP) principle of Ziegler and Paltridge with respect to the choice of flow regime. The first principle - different to but allied to that of Prigogine - arises from the stability of the steady state compared to non-stead…
A study of the the main features of low- and high amplitude steady streamwise wall transpiration applied to pipe flow is presented. The effect of the two transpiration parameters, amplitude and wavenumber, on the flow have been investigated by means of direct numerical simulation at a moderate turbulent Reynolds number. The behaviour of the three identified mechanisms that act in the flow: modification of Reynolds shear stress, steady streaming and generation of non-zero mean streamwise gradients, have been linked to the transpiration parameters. The observed trends have permitted the identifi…
A computational study of three-dimensional instability of steady flows in a helical pipe of arbitrary curvature and torsion is carried out for the first time. The problem is formulated in Germano coordinates in two equivalent but different forms of the momentum equation, so that results obtained using both formulations cross verify each other. An additional formulation in the cylindrical coordinates is applied for a limiting case of the toroidal pipe. The calculations are performed by the finite volume and finite difference methods. Grid independence of the results is established for both stea…
In the present work, the mathematical description of a two-dimensional unsteady magneto-hydrodynamics slow flow with thermoelectric properties (TEMHD) on an infinite vertical partially hot porous plate is presented. The Laplace-Fourier transform technique is employed to simplify the field equations. For the steady-state heat transfer assumption, exact expressions for the temperature and stream function are analytically obtained for TEMHD flow on a wall with two infinite instantaneous hot suction lines. The results obtained are displayed graphically.
In this work, we provide two novel approaches to show that incompressible fluid flow in a finite domain contains at most a finite number vortices. We use a recently developed geometric theory of incompressible viscous flows along with an existing mathematical analysis concept to establish the finiteness. We also offer a second proof of finiteness by roping in the Kolmogorov's length scale criterion in conjunction with the notion of diametric disks.
A well-developed method to induce mixing on microscopic scales is to exploit flows generated by steady streaming. Steady streaming is a classical fluid dynamics phenomenon whereby a time-periodic forcing in the bulk or along a boundary is enhanced by inertia to induce a non-zero net flow. Building on classical work for simple geometrical forcing and motivated by the complex shape oscillations of elastic capsules and bubbles, we develop the mathematical framework to quantify the steady streaming of a spherical body with arbitrary axisymmetric time-periodic boundary conditions. We compute the fl…
A numerical study of the problem of laminar infinite flow of viscous incompressible fluid around a rotating circular cylinder at Reynolds number $ 50 \le {\rm Re} \le 500 $ and dimensionless rotation rate $ 0 \le α\le 7 $ has been carried out. The parametric map of flow regimes has been constructed, where two zones of steady and two zones of periodic solutions are signed out. The dependencies of the drag and lift coefficients on the rotation rate for $ {\rm Re} = 200 $ are studied in detail. Convergence of the numerical solution to the known asymptotic solution at large $ α$ is confirmed.
It is well known that the transient behavior during drainage or imbibition in multiphase flow in porous media strongly depends on the history and initial condition of the system. However, when the steady-state regime is reached and both drainage and imbibition take place at the pore level, the influence of the evolution history and initial preparation is an open question. Here, we present an extensive experimental and numerical work investigating the history dependence of simultaneous steady-state two-phase flow through porous media. Our experimental system consists of a Hele-Shaw cell filled …
Exact, fully explicit, purely real analytical expressions for the material functions describing steady, startup, and cessation regimes of shear flows and of planar, uniaxial, and biaxial extensional flows of full linear Phan-Thien--Tanner fluids are obtained. These expressions, which have no analogs in the literature, are formulated in compact, beautiful forms, partially due to the unique scaling procedure reducing the number of the model parameters from four to one. The properties of the material functions are investigated in detail. For steady extensional flows, the possible shapes of the ex…
This paper presents an implicit method for the discrete unified gas-kinetic scheme (DUGKS) to speed up the simulations of the steady flows in all flow regimes. The DUGKS is a multi-scale scheme finite volume method (FVM) for all flow regimes because of its ability in recovering the Navier-Stokes solution in the continuum regime and the free transport mechanism in rarefied flow, which couples particle transport and collision in the flux evaluation at cell interfaces. In this paper the predicted iterations are constructed to update the macroscopic variables and the gas distribution functions in …
We present results from an individual particle based model for the collision, coagulation and fragmentation of heavy drops moving in a turbulent flow. Such a model framework can help to bridge the gap between the full hydrodynamic simulation of two phase flows, which can usually only study few particles and mean field based approaches for coagulation and fragmentation relying heavily on parameterization and are for example unable to fully capture particle inertia. We study the steady state that results from a balance between coagulation and fragmentation and the impact of particle properties a…
An alternative step in understanding the flows of near wall drag-reducing turbulence can be examining the flow in a well-organized streamwise vortex with a laminar background. Herein, we studied the flow behaviors of the Giesekus viscoelastic fluid in a rotating plane Couette flow system, which is accompanied by steady roll cell structures. By fixing the Reynolds and rotation numbers at values that provide as steady wavy roll cell, i.e., an array of meandering streamwise vortices, the Weissenberg number was increased up to 2000 (where the relaxation time was normalized by the wall speed and th…
We study flow driven through a finite-length planar rigid channel by a fixed upstream flux, where a segment of one wall is replaced by a pre-stressed elastic beam subject to uniform external pressure. The steady and unsteady systems are solved using a finite element method. Previous studies have shown that the system can exhibit three steady states for some parameters (termed the upper, intermediate and lower steady branches, respectively). Of these, the intermediate branch is always unstable while the upper and lower steady branches can (independently) become unstable to self-excited oscillat…
In a recent paper, Liu et al. [``Lift and drag in three-dimensional steady viscous and compressible flow'', Phys. Fluids 29, 116105 (2017)] obtained a universal theory for the aerodynamic force on a body in three-dimensional steady flow, effective from incompressible all the way to supersonic regimes. In this theory, the total aerodynamic force can be determined solely with the vorticity distribution on a single wake plane locating in the steady linear far field. Despite the vital importance of this result, its validity and performance in practice has not been investigated yet. In this paper, …
From the definition of a generalized conformable spatial derivative, an exponential conformable function with three parameters $(a,b,α)$ is proposed for a viscous and an inertial-viscous steady-state Navier-Stokes 1D models, obtaining analytical solutions for both generalized conformable models. The conformable models' parameters are optimized to compare the viscous model to a Darcian 1D flow and the inertial-viscous model to a non-Darcian 1D model for a specific range of Darcy numbers $(1\times10^{-2}<Da\leq 1)$. Velocity profiles for the porous medium and the conformable model are computed a…
In the finite element analysis with fast decoupled time integration scheme for viscoelastic fluid (the Leonov model) flow, we investigate strong nonlinear behavior in 2D creeping contraction flow. The algorithm is applicable in the whole range of the retardation parameter. In the analysis of steady solutions, there exists upper convergence limit of available numerical solutions in this contraction flow that is free from the frustrating mesh dependence when we incorporate the tensor-logarithmic formulation [Fattal and Kupferman, JNNFM, 2004]. With adjustment of a nonlinear parameter, 2 kinds of…
Exact analytical solutions for start-up and cessation flows are obtained for the affine linear Phan-Thien--Tanner fluid model. They include the results for start-up and cessation of steady shear flows, of steady uniaxial and biaxial extensional flows, and of steady planar extensional flows. The solutions obtained show that at start-up of steady shear flows, the stresses go through quasi-periodic exponentially damped oscillations while approaching their steady-flow values (so that stress overshoots are present); at start-up of steady extensional flows, the stresses grow monotonically, while at …
In this paper, Beltrami vector fields in several orthogonal coordinate systems are obtained analytically and numerically. Specifically, axisymmetric incompressible inviscid steady state Beltrami (Trkalian) fluid flows are obtained with the motivation to model flows that have been hypothesized to occur in tornadic flows. The studied coordinate systems include those that appear amenable to modeling such flows: the cylindrical, spherical, paraboloidal, and prolate and oblate spheroidal systems. The usual Euler equations are reformulated using the Bragg--Hawthorne equation for the stream function …
We find steady channel flows that are locally optimal for transferring heat from fixed-temperature walls, under the constraint of a fixed rate of viscous dissipation (enstrophy = $Pe^2$), also the power needed to pump the fluid through the channel. We generate the optima with net flux as a continuation parameter, starting from parabolic (Poiseuille) flow, the unique optimum at maximum net flux. Decreasing the flux, we eventually reach optimal flows that concentrate the enstrophy in boundary layers of thickness $\sim Pe^{-2/5}$ at the channel walls, and have a uniform flow with speed $\sim Pe^{…
The study solves the general solution to 2D steady Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible flow without vorticity diffusion, which is more general than Stokes flow. In order to obtain the general solution, two potential functions are introduced to express the velocity: a vector potential describing the rotational incompressible flow and a scalar potential describing the irrotational incompressible flow. The results show that the vorticity equation expressed with potential functions is a biharmonic function, which means that the potential functions describing the flow field are polynomials of…
We discuss experimental investigations on steady streaming flows of dilute and semi-dilute polymer solutions in microfluidic devices. The effect of non-Newtonian behavior on steady streaming for different model fluids is determined by characterizing the evolution of the inner streaming layer as a function of oscillation frequency using particle tracking velocimetry. We find that steady streaming velocity profiles in constant-viscosity elastic liquids are qualitatively similar to those in Newtonian liquids. Steady streaming velocity profiles in elastic liquids with strong shear thinning, howeve…
We study the effect of local wettability reversal on remobilizing immobile fluid clusters in steady-state two-phase flow in porous media. We consider a two dimensional network model for porous medium and introduce a wettability alteration mechanism. A qualitative change in the steady state flow patterns, destabilizing the percolating and trapped clusters, is observed as the system wettability is varied. When capillary forces are strong a finite wettability alteration is necessary to move the system from single-phase to two-phase flow regime. For the case of both phases being mobile we find a l…
In this work, the exact reproduction of a moving-water steady flow via the numerical solution of the one-dimensional shallow water equations is studied. A new scheme based on a modified version of the HLLEM approximate Riemann solver [Dumbser M. and Balsara D.S., J. Comput. Phys. 304 (2016) 275--319] that exactly preserves the total head and the discharge in the simulation of smooth steady flows and that correctly dissipates mechanical energy in the presence of hydraulic jumps is presented. This model is compared with a selected set of schemes from the literature, including models that exactly…
We construct an explicit steady stratified purely azimuthal flow for the governing equations of geophysical fluid dynamics. These equations are considered in a setting that applies to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, accounting for eddy viscosity and forcing terms.
We introduce a general decomposition of the stress tensor for incompressible fluids in terms of its components on a tensorial basis adapted to the local flow conditions, which include extensional flows, simple shear flows, and any type of mixed flows. Such a basis is determined solely by the symmetric part of the velocity gradient and allows for a straightforward interpretation of the non-Newtonian response in any local flow conditions. In steady homogeneous flows, the material functions that represent the components of the stress on the adapted basis generalize and complete the classical set …
The steady Poiseuille flow of Carreau-Yasuda fluid in a pipe, caused by constant pressure gradient, is studied theoretically. It is proved that at some values of the viscosity model parameters, the problem has a classical solution, while at others - generalized solution. For the latter, a necessary and sufficient condition is found, which depends on the pressure gradient and Carreau-Yasuda model parameters.

We propose a model to directly predict the steady-state flow field for a given geometry setup. The setup is an Eulerian representation of the fluid flow as a meshed domain. We introduce a graph network architecture to process the mesh-space simulation as a graph. The benefit of our model is a strong understanding of the global physical system, while being able to explore the local structure. This is essential to perform direct prediction and is thus superior to other existing methods.
We study the influence of the forcing on the steady turbulent states of a von Kármán swirling flow, at constant impeller speed, or at constant torque. We find that the different forcing conditions change the nature of the stability of the steady states and reveal dynamical regimes that bear similarities with low-dimensional systems. We suggest that this forcing dependence may be an out- of-equilibrium analogue of the ensemble inequivalence, valid for long-range interacting statistical systems, and that it may be applicable to other turbulent systems.
We report rheological measurements of a noncolloidal particle suspension in a Newtonian solvent at 40% solid volume fraction. An anomalous, frequency-dependent complex viscosity is found under oscillatory shear (OS) flow, whereas a constant dynamic viscosity is found under the same shear rates in steady shear (SS) flow. We show that this contradiction arises from the underlying microstructural difference between OS and SS, mediated by weak interparticle forces. Discrete element simulations of proxy particle suspensions confirm this hypothesis and reveal an adhesion-induced, shear thinning mech…
Bondi (1952) and Parker (1958} derived a steady-state solution for Bernouilli's equation in spherical symmetry around a point mass for two cases, respectively, an inward accretion flow and an outward wind. Left unanswered were the stability of the steady-state solution, the solution itself of time-dependent flows, whether the time-dependent flows would evolve to the steady-state, and under what conditions a transonic flow would develop. In a Hamiltonian description, we find that the steady state solution is equivalent to the Lagrangian implying that time-dependent flows evolve to the steady st…
In this paper, we investigate steady inviscid compressible flows with radial symmetry in an annulus. The major concerns are transonic flows with or without shocks. One of the main motivations is to elucidate the role played by the angular velocity in the structure of steady inviscid compressible flows. We give a complete classification of flow patterns in terms of boundary conditions at the inner and outer circle. Due to the nonzero angular velocity, many new flow patterns will appear. There exists accelerating or decelerating smooth transonic flows in an annulus satisfying one side boundary c…
We present experimental observations and numerical simulations of a wrinkling instability that occurs at sufficiently high strain rates in the trembling regime of vesicle dynamics in steady linear flow. Spectral and statistical analysis of the data shows similarities and differences with the wrinkling instability observed earlier for vesicles in transient elongation flow. The critical relevance of thermal fluctuations for this phenomenon is revealed by a simple model using coupled Langevin equations that reproduces the experimental observations quite well.
FourNetFlows, the abbreviation of Fourier Neural Network for Airfoil Flows, is an efficient model that provides quick and accurate predictions of steady airfoil flows. We choose the Fourier Neural Operator (FNO) as the backbone architecture and utilize OpenFOAM to generate numerical solutions of airfoil flows for training. Our results indicate that FourNetFlows matches the accuracy of the Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations (SIMPLE) integrated with the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model, one of the numerical algorithms. FourNetFlows is also used to predict flows around an oval wh…
A theory to predict the steady state position of a dissipative, flow-controlled system, as defined by a control volume, is developed based on the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) principle of Jaynes, involving minimisation of a generalised free energy-like potential. The analysis provides a theoretical justification of a local, conditional form of the Maximum Entropy Production (MEP) principle, which successfully predicts the observable properties of many such systems. The analysis reveals a very different manifestation of the second law of thermodynamics in steady state flow systems, which {provides …
Dufty, Lee, Lutsko, Montanero, and Santos have carried out stability analyses of steady stationary shear flows. Their approach is based on the compressible and heat conducting Navier-Stokes-Fourier model. It predicts the unstable exponential growth of long-wavelength transverse perturbations for both two- and three-dimensional fluids. We point out that the patently-stable two-dimensional periodic shear flows studied earlier by Petravic, Posch, and ourselves contradict these predicted instabilities. The stable steady-state shear flows are based on nonequilibrium molecular dynamics with simple t…
The boundary conditions prescribing the constant traction or the so-called do-nothing conditions are frequently taken on artificial boundaries in the numerical simulations of steady flow of incompressible fluids, despite the fact that they do not facilitate a well-posed problem, not allowing to establish the standard energy estimates. In a pursuit to understand better the possible consequences of using these conditions, we present a particular set of examples of flow problems, where we find none or two analytical or numerical solutions. Namely, we consider problems where the flow connects two …
We introduce six families of three-dimensional space-periodic steady solenoidal flows, whose kinetic helicity density is zero at any point. Four families are analytically defined. Flows in four families have zero helicity spectrum. Sample flows from five families are used to demonstrate numerically that neither zero kinetic helicity density, nor zero helicity spectrum prohibit generation of large-scale magnetic field by the two most prominent dynamo mechanisms: the magnetic $α$-effect and negative eddy diffusivity. Our computations also attest that such flows often generate small-scale field f…
We study the steady streaming between two infinitely long circular cylinders produced by small amplitude transverse vibrations of the inner cylinder about the axis of the outer cylinder. The Vishik-Lyusternik method is employed to construct an asymptotic expansion of the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in the limit of high-frequency vibrations for Reynolds numbers of order of unity. The effect of the Stokes drift of fluid particles is also studied. It is shown that it is nonzero not only within the boundary layers but also in higher order terms of the expansion of the averaged outer fl…
We proposed rigorous definitions of Radon measure solutions for boundary value problems of steady compressible Euler equations which modeling hypersonic-limit inviscid flows passing two-dimensional ramps, and their interactions with still gas and pressureless jets. We proved the Newton-Busemann pressure law of drags of body in hypersonic flow, and constructed various physically interesting measure solutions with density containing Dirac measures supported on curves, also exhibited examples of blow up of certain measure solutions. This established a mathematical foundation for applications in e…
If the vorticity field of an ideal fluid is tangent to a foliation, additional conservation laws arise. For a class of zero-helicity vorticity fields the Godbillon-Vey (GV) invariant of foliations is defined and is shown to be an invariant purely of the vorticity, becoming a higher-order helicity-type invariant of the flow. GV non-zero gives both a global topological obstruction to steady flow and, in a particular form, a local obstruction. GV is interpreted as helical compression and stretching of vortex lines. Examples are given where the value of GV is determined by a set of distinguished c…
Red blood cells (RBCs) are the major component of blood and the flow of blood is dictated by that of RBCs. We employ vesicles, which consist of closed bilayer membranes enclosing a fluid, as a model system to study the behavior of RBCs under a confined Poiseuille flow. We extensively explore two main parameters: i) the degree of confinement of vesicles within the channel, and ii) the flow strength. Rich and complex dynamics for vesicles are revealed ranging from steady-state shapes (in the form of parachute and slipper) to chaotic dynamics of shape. Chaos occurs through a cascade of multiple p…
