From the definition of a generalized conformable spatial derivative, an exponential conformable function with three parameters $(a,b,α)$ is proposed for a viscous and an inertial-viscous steady-state Navier-Stokes 1D models, obtaining analytical solutions for both generalized conformable models. The conformable models' parameters are optimized to compare the viscous model to a Darcian 1D flow and the inertial-viscous model to a non-Darcian 1D model for a specific range of Darcy numbers $(1\times10^{-2}<Da\leq 1)$. Velocity profiles for the porous medium and the conformable model are computed and compared, showing that the generalized conformable Navier Stokes 1D models describe the flow through a porous medium, for both Darcian and non-Darcian flow, without including a Darcy term or macroscopic porous characteristics.
In this paper, a pore-scale network modeling method, based on the flow continuity residual in conjunction with a Newton-Raphson non-linear iterative solving technique, is proposed and used to obtain the pressure and flow fields in a network of interconnected distensible ducts representing, for instance, blood vasculature or deformable porous media. A previously derived analytical expression correlating boundary pressures to volumetric flow rate in compliant tubes for a pressure-area constitutive elastic relation has been used to represent the underlying flow model. Comparison to a preceding eq…
Permeability estimation of porous media from direct solving Navier--Stokes equation has a wide spectrum of applications in petroleum industry. In this paper, we utilize a pressure-correction projection algorithm in conjunction with the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin scheme for space discretization to build an incompressible Navier--Stokes simulator and to use this simulator to calculate permeability of real rock sample. The proposed method is accurate, numerically robust, and exhibits the potential for tackling realistic problems.
In a recent paper by Lasseux, Valdés-Parada and Porter (J.~Fluid~Mech. \textbf{805} (2016) 118-146), it is found that the apparent gas permeability of the porous media is a nonlinear function of the Knudsen number. However, this result is highly questionable, because the adopted Navier-Stokes equations and the first-order velocity-slip boundary condition are first-order (in terms of the Knudsen number) approximations of the Boltzmann equation and the kinetic boundary condition for rarefied gas flows. Our numerical simulations based on the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook kinetic equation and regularized …
We experimentally examine pressure-driven flows of 1%, 3%, and 5% dilute suspensions over and through a porous media model. The flow of non-colloidal, non-Brownian suspensions of rigid and spherical particles suspended in a Newtonian fluid is considered at very low Reynolds numbers. The model of porous media consists of square arrays of rods oriented across the flow in a rectangular channel. Systematic experiments using high-spatial-resolution planar particle image velocimetry (PIV) and index-matching techniques are conducted to accurately measure the velocity measurements of both very dilute …
Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has been applied to predict flow properties of porous media including intrinsic permeability, where it is implicitly assumed that the LBM is equivalent to the incompressible (or near incompressible) Navier-Stokes equation. However, in LBM simulations, high-order moments, which are completely neglected in the Navier-Stokes equation, are still available through particle distribution functions. To ensure that the LBM simulation is correctly working at the Navier-Stokes hydrodynamic level, the high-order moments have to be negligible. This requires that the Knudsen n…
Characteristics of Oscillating Flow in a Straight Tube with varying thickness of porous layer at the wall is studied. Results for two different porous layer is discussed and compared in terms of Velocity Profile, phase differences and radial position of maximum velocity over the cross-section. Present problem is modeled using Navier-Stokes Equation in clear medium at the core of tube while Darcy-BrinkmannForcheimmer Model is used for the outer porous layer. Solutions for these equations have been obtained using Finite Volume Method based 3D unstructured solver. Velocity profile obtained for tu…
The modeling of flow and heat transfer in porous media systems have always been a challenge and, the extended Darcy transport models for flow and equilibrium and non-equilibrium energy models for heat transfer are being used for macro-level analysis, however, the limitations of these models are subjected to porous geometry. The forced convective flow of an incompressible viscous fluid through a channel filled with four different types of porous geometries constructed using the Triply-Periodic-Minimal-Surface (or TPMS) model, are presented in this study. Four TPMS lattice shapes namely; Diamond…
We derive new analytical results for the hydrodynamic force exerted on a sinusoidally oscillating porous shell and a sphere of uniform density in the Stokes limit. The coupling between the spherical particle and the solvent is done using the Debye-Bueche-Brinkman (DBB) model, i.e. by a frictional force proportional to the local velocity difference between the permeable particle and the solvent. We compare our analytical results and existing dynamic theories to Lattice-Boltzmann simulations of full Navier-Stokes equations for the oscillating porous particle. We find our analytical results to ag…
In this work, the linear stability of the viscous incompressible fluid flow between two parallel horizontal porous stationary plates with the assumption that there is a small constant suction at upper plate and a small constant injection at the lower plate is studied. The Navier-Stokes and continuous equations are reduced to an equation modified by the suction Reynolds number, which we call modified Orr-Sommerfeld equation. This equation is rewritten as an eigenvalue problem and is solved numerically using Matlab (Windows Version). The effect of small suction Reynolds number on the linear stabi…
We consider the slow flow of a viscous incompressible liquid in a channel of constant but arbitrary cross section shape, driven by non-uniform suction or injection through the porous channel walls. A similarity transformation reduces the Navier-Stokes equations to a set of coupled equations for the velocity potential in two dimensions. When the channel aspect ratio and Reynolds number are both small, the problem reduces to solving the biharmonic equation with constant forcing in two dimensions. With the relevant boundary conditions, determining the velocity field in a porous channels is thus e…
In this paper we consider a multiscale phase-field model for capillarity-driven flows in porous media. The presented model constitutes a reduction of the conventional Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard phase-field model, valid in situations where interest is restricted to dynamical and equilibrium behavior in an aggregated sense, rather than a precise description of microscale flow phenomena. The model is based on averaging of the equation of motion, thereby yielding a significant reduction in the complexity of the underlying Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations, while retaining its macroscopic dyna…
A simple analytical model of a layered system comprised of a single passage of a serpentine flow channel and a parallel underlying porous electrode (or porous layer) is proposed. This analytical model is derived from Navier-Stokes motion in the flow channel and Darcy-Brinkman model in the porous layer. The continuities of flow velocity and normal stress are applied at the interface between the flow channel and the porous layer. The effects of the inlet volumetric flow rate, thickness of the flow channel and thickness of a typical carbon fiber paper porous layer on the volumetric flow rate with…
We extend the two-scale expansion approach of periodic homogenization to include time scales and thus can tackle the full instationary Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard model at the pore scale as microscale. Time scale separation allows us to keep microscale dynamics, responsible e.g. for hysteresis, and arrive at a numerically tractable micro-macro model including coupled generalized Darcy's laws.
Simulating the interaction of fluids with immersed moving solids is playing an important role for gaining a better quantitative understanding of how fluid dynamics is altered by the presence of obstacles and which forces are exerted on the solids by the moving fluid. Such problems appear in various contexts, ranging from numerous technical applications such as turbines to medical problems such as the regulation of hemodyamics by valves. Typically, the numerical treatment of such problems is posed within a fluid structure interaction (FSI) framework. General FSI models are able to capture bidir…
Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) simulations for turbulent flows over a fractal and non-fractal obstacles are presented. The wake hydrodynamics are compared and discussed in terms of flow relaxation, Strouhal numbers and wake length for different Reynolds numbers. Three obstacle topologies are studied, Solid (SS), Porous Regular (PR) and Porous Fractal (FR). In particular we observe that the oscillation present in the case of the solid square can be annihilated or only pushed downstream depending on the topology ot the porous obstacle. The Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is implemented over a ran…
We perform linear and nonlinear stability analysis for thermal convection in a fluid overlying a saturated porous medium. We use a coupled system, with the Navier-Stokes equations and Darcy's equation governing the free-flow and the porous regions respectively. Incorporating a dynamic pressure term in the Lions interface condition (which specifies the normal force balance across the fluid-medium interface) permits an energy bound on the typically uncooperative nonlinear advection term, enabling new nonlinear stability results. Within certain regimes, the nonlinear stability thresholds agree cl…
Detailed understanding of the coupling between fluid flow and solid deformation in porous media is crucial for the development biomedical devices and novel energy technologies relating to a wide range of geological and biological processes. Well established models based on poroelasticity theory exist for describing coupled fluid-solid mechanics. However, these models are not adapted to describe systems with multiple fluid phases or 'hybrid-scale' systems containing both solid-free regions and porous matrices. To address this problem, we present a novel computational fluid dynamics approach bas…
Self-similar swirl between contracting porous walls: the GD1998 exact Navier-Stokes solution revisited in the similarity variables of the OpenAI 2026 forced blow-up construction
A numerical method, based on the discrete lattice Boltzmann equation, is presented for solving the volume-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. With a modified equilibrium distribution and an additional forcing term, the volume-averaged Navier-Stokes equations can be recovered from the lattice Boltzmann equation in the limit of small Mach number by the Chapman-Enskog analysis and Taylor expansion. Due to its advantages such as explicit solver and inherent parallelism, the method appears to be more competitive with traditional numerical techniques. Numerical simulations show that the proposed model…
In this paper, a multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is developed for simulating incompressible axisymmetric thermal flows in porous media at the representative elementary volume (REV) scale. In the model, a D2Q9 MRT-LB equation is proposed to solve the flow field in addition to the D2Q5 LB equation for the temperature field. The source terms of the model are simple and contain no velocity and temperature gradient terms. The generalized axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations for axisymmetric flows in porous media are correctly recovered from the MRT-LB model through the C…
An open-sourced multiphase Darcy-Brinkman approach is proposed to simulate two-phase flow in hybrid systems containing both solid-free regions and porous matrices. This micro-continuum model is rooted in elementary physics and volume averaging principles, where a unique set of partial differential equations is used to represent flow in both regions and scales. The crux of the proposed model is that it tends asymptotically towards the Navier-Stokes volume-of-fluid approach in solid-free regions and towards the multiphase Darcy equations in porous regions. Unlike existing multiscale multiphase s…
The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to study the canonical problem of steady laminar flow through a narrow two-dimensional channel blocked by a tight-fitting finite-length highly permeable porous obstacle. We investigate the behaviour of the local flow close to the interface between the single-phase and porous regions (governed by the incompressible Navier--Stokes and Darcy flow equations, respectively). We solve for the flow in these inner regions in the limits of low and high Reynolds number, facilitating an understanding of the nature of the transition from Poiseuille to plu…
We present modeling of an incompressible viscous flow through a fracture adjacent to a porous medium. We consider a fast stationary flow, predominantly tangential to the porous medium. Slow flow in such setting can be described by the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman slip. For fast flows, a nonlinear filtration law in the porous medium and a non- linear interface law are expected. In this paper we rigorously derive a quadratic effective slip interface law which holds for a range of Reynolds numbers and fracture widths. The porous medium flow is described by the Darcys law. The result shows that the inte…
We investigate the elastoviscoplastic flow through porous media by numerical simulations. We solve the Navier-Stokes equations combined with the elastoviscoplastic model proposed by Saramito for the stress tensor evolution. In this model, the material behaves as a viscoelastic solid when unyielded, and as a viscoelastic Oldroyd-B fluid for stresses higher than the yield stress. The porous media is made of a symmetric array of cylinders, and we solve the flow in one periodic cell. We find that the solution is time-dependent even at low Reynolds numbers as we observe oscillations in time of the …
In this paper, a two-dimensional eight-velocity (D2Q8) multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is proposed for incompressible porous flows at the representative elementary volume scale based on the Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy formulation. In the model, the porosity is included into the pressure-based equilibrium moments, and the linear and nonlinear drag forces of the porous media are incorporated into the model by adding a forcing term to the MRT-LB equation in the moment space. Through the Chapman-Enskog analysis, the generalized Navier-Stokes equations can be rec…

Velocity relaxation of a spherically symmetric polymer, immersed in a viscous incompressible fluid, and after a sudden small impulse or a sudden twist from a state of rest, is studied on the basis of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations with an added Darcy type drag term. Explicit expressions for the translational and rotational velocity relaxation functions of the polymer and for the flow pattern of the fluid are derived for a uniform permeable sphere. Surprisingly, it is found that the added mass vanishes. For fairly large values of the ratio of sphere radius to the screening length charac…
The stability of a two-dimensional viscous flow between two rotating porous cylinders is studied. The basic steady flow is the most general rotationally-invariant solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in which the velocity has both radial and azimuthal components, and the azimuthal velocity profile depends on the Reynolds number. It is shown that for a wide range of the parameters of the problem, the basic flow is unstable to small two-dimensional perturbations. Neutral curves in the space of parameters of the problem are computed. Calculations show that the stability properties of this flow…
We demonstrate that fluid flow cloaking solutions based on active hydrodynamic metamaterials exist for two-dimensional flows past a cylinder in a wide range of Reynolds numbers, up to approximately 200. Within the framework of the classical Brinkman equation for homogenized porous flow, we demonstrate using two different methods that such cloaked flows can be dynamically stable for $Re$ in the range 5-119. The first, highly efficient, method is based on a linearization of the Brinkman-Navier-Stokes equation and finding the eigenfrequencies of the least stable eigen-perturbations; the second me…
The Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (NSK) system is a classical diffuse interface model which is based on van der Waals theory of capillarity. Diffuse interface methods have gained much interest to model two-phase flow in porous media. However, for the numerical solution of the NSK equations two major challenges have to be faced. First, an extended numerical stencil is required due to a third-order term in the linear momentum and the total energy equations. In addition, the dispersive contribution in the linear momentum equations prevents the straightforward use of contact angle boundary conditions. Se…
We derive a homogenized macroscopic model for fluid flows over ordered homogeneous porous surfaces. The unconfined free-flow is described by the Navier-Stokes equation, and the Darcy equation governs the seepage flow within the porous domain. Boundary conditions that accurately capture mass and momentum transport at the contact surface between these two domains are derived using the multiscale homogenization technique. In addition to obtaining the generalized version of the widely used Beavers-Joseph slip condition for tangential velocities, the present work provides an accurate formulation fo…
This paper presents a topology optimization approach for surface flows, which can represent the viscous and incompressible fluidic motions at the solid/liquid and liquid/vapor interfaces. The fluidic motions on such material interfaces can be described by the surface Navier-Stokes equations defined on 2-manifolds or two-dimensional manifolds, where the elementary tangential calculus is implemented in terms of exterior differential operators expressed in a Cartesian system. Based on the topology optimization model for fluidic flows with porous medium filling the design domain, an artificial Dar…
Many applications of porous media research involves high pressures and, correspondingly, exchange of thermal energy between the fluid and the matrix. While the system is relatively well understood for the case of non-moving porous media, the situation when the elastic matrix can move and deform, is much more complex. In this paper we derive the equations of motion for the dynamics of a deformable porous media which includes the effects of friction forces, stresses, and heat exchanges between the media, by using the new methodology of variational approach to thermodynamics. This theory extends …
Modeling coupled systems of free flow adjacent to a porous medium by means of fully resolved Navier-Stokes equations is limited by the immense computational cost and is thus only feasible for relatively small domains. Model reduction allows to decrease a model's complexity while maintaining an acceptable degree of accuracy. Starting from a fully resolved three-dimensional numerical model, which is compared to high-resolution micro-PIV experimental data obtained from a previous study (Terzis et al.,2019), we perform a two-fold model reduction: first, a quasi-3D model incorporating a wall fricti…

Acoustic waves in a slightly compressible fluid saturating porous periodic structure are studied using two complementary approaches: 1) the periodic homogenization (PH) method provides effective model equations for a general dynamic problem imposed in a bounded medium, 2) harmonic acoustic waves are studied in an infinite medium using the Floquet-Bloch (FB) wave decomposition. In contrast with usual simplifications, the advection phenomenon of the Navier-Stokes equations is accounted for. For this, an acoustic approximation is applied to linearize the advection term. The homogenization results…
We present a description and validation of a finite volume solver aimed at solving the problems of microscale urban flows where vegetation is present. The solver is based on the five equation system of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for atmospheric boundary layer flows, which are complemented by the k-epsilon turbulence model. The vegetation is modelled as a porous zone, and the effects of the vegetation are included in the momentum and turbulence equations. A detailed dry deposition model is incorporated in the pollutant transport equation, allowing the investigation of the filteri…
