We describe a general analytical framework of a nanoplasmonic cavity-emitter system interacting with a dielectric photonic waveguide. Taking into account emitter quenching and dephasing, our model directly reveals the single photon extraction efficiency, $η$, as well as the indistinguishability, $I$, of photons coupled into the waveguide mode. Rather than minimizing the cavity modal volume, our analysis predicts an optimum modal volume to maximize $η$ that balances waveguide coupling and spontaneous emission rate enhancement. Surprisingly, our model predicts that near-unity indistinguishability is possible, but this requires a much smaller modal volume, implying a fundamental performance trade-off between high $η$ and $I$ at room temperature. Finally, we show that maximizing $ηI$ requires that the system has to be driven in the weak coupling regime because quenching effects and decreased waveguide coupling drastically reduce $η$ in the strong coupling regime.

We experimentally demonstrate a real-time quantum random number generator by using a room-temperature single-photon emitter from the defect in a commercial gallium nitride wafer. Thanks to the brightness of our single photon emitter, the raw bit generation rate is ~1.8 MHz, and the unbiased bit generation rate is ~420 kHz after von Neumann's randomness extraction procedure. Our results show that commercial gallium nitride wafer has great potential for the development of integrated high-speed quantum random number generator devices.

We observe the weak coupling of lead sulphide nanocrystals to localized defect modes of 2-dimensional silicon nanocavities. Cavity resonances characterized with ensemble nanocrystals are verified with cold-cavity measurements using integrated waveguides. Polarization dependence of the cavity field modes is observed. The linewidths measured in coupling experiments are broadened in comparison to the cold-cavity characterization, partly due to large homogeneous linewidths of the nanocrystals. The calculated Purcell factor for a single exciton is 75, showing promise toward applications in single p…
Ultrafast nonlinear photonics enables a host of applications in advanced on-chip spectroscopy and information processing. Fully exploiting the silicon photonics platform requires a fundamentally new approach to realize high-performance laser sources that can be integrated directly using wafer-scale fabrication methods. Direct band gap III-V semiconductors allow efficient light generation but the large mismatch in lattice constant, thermal expansion and crystal polarity makes their epitaxial growth directly on silicon extremely complex. Here, using a selective area growth technique in confined regions, we surpass this fundamental limit and demonstrate an optically pumped InP-based distributed feedback (DFB) laser …

Ultra-low threshold coherent light emitters can be achieved through lasing from exciton-polariton condensates, but this generally requires sophisticated device structures and cryogenic temperatures. Polaritonic nanolasers operating at room temperature lie on the crucial path of related research, not only for the exploration of polariton physics at the nanoscale but also for…
