We present a novel class of nonlinear dynamical systems - a hybrid of relativistic quantum and classical systems, and demonstrate that multistability is ubiquitous. A representative setting is coupled systems of a topological insulator and an insulating ferromagnet, where the former possesses an insulating bulk with topologically protected, dissipationless, and conducting surface electronic states governed by the relativistic quantum Dirac Hamiltonian and latter is described by the nonlinear classical evolution of its magnetization vector. The interactions between the two are essentially the spin transfer torque from the topological insulator to the ferromagnet and the local proximity induced exchange coupling in the opposite direction. The hybrid system exhibits a rich variety of nonlinear dynamical phenomena besides multistability such as bifurcations, chaos, and phase synchronization. The degree of multistability can be controlled by an external voltage. In the case of two coexisting states, the system is effectively binary, opening a door to exploitation for developing spintronic memory devices. Because of the dissipationless and spin-momentum locking nature of the surface currents of the topological insulator, little power is needed for generating a significant current, making the system appealing for potential applications in next generation of low power memory devices.
We study the dynamical multistability of a solid-state single-atom laser implemented in a quantum-dot spin valve. The system is formed by a resonator that interacts with a two-level system in a dot in contact with two ferromagnetic leads of antiparallel polarization. We show that a spin-polarized current provides high-efficiency pumping leading to regimes of multistable lasing, in which the Fock distribution of the oscillator displays a multi-peaked distribution. The emergence of multistable lasing follows from the breakdown of the usual rotating-wave approximation for the coherent spin-resona…
We investigate polariton-phonon hybrid excitations, which describe the collective excitations of emitter-photon polaritons and vibrational phonons, in a periodic array of vibrating two-level emitters interacting with waveguide photons. We demonstrate the emergence of an interaction-induced quasiperiodic structure caused by the interplay between phonon scatterings and waveguide-mediated long-range couplings. This quasiperiodicity fundamentally changes the excitation characteristics in the subradiant regime, which feature an appearance of topological edge states and a transition between ergodic …
We consider the hybrid setup formed by a metallic dot, capacitively coupled to a superconducting island S connected to a bulk superconductor by a Josephson junction. Charge fluctuations in S act as a dynamical gate and overscreen the electronic repulsion in the metallic dot, producing an attractive interaction between two additional electrons. As the offset charge of the metallic dot is increased, the dot charging curve shows positive steps ($+2e$) followed by negative ones ($-e$) signaling the occurrence of a negative differential capacitance. A proposal for experimental detection is given, a…
Hybrid nanowires combining semiconductor and superconductor materials appear well suited for the creation, detection, and control of Majorana bound states (MBSs). We demonstrate the emergence of MBSs from coalescing Andreev bound states (ABSs) in a hybrid InAs nanowire with epitaxial Al, using a quantum dot at the end of the nanowire as a spectrometer. Electrostatic gating tuned the nanowire density to a regime of one or a few ABSs. In an applied axial magnetic field, a topological phase emerges in which ABSs move to zero energy and remain there, forming MBSs. We observed hybridization of the …
We investigate the impact of electrostatics on the proximity effect between a magnetic insulator and a semiconductor wire in semiconductor-superconductor-magnetic insulator hybrid structures. By performing self-consistent Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger-Poisson calculations using an effective model of the hybrid system, we find that large effective Zeeman fields consistent with the emergence of topological superconductivity emerge within a large parameter window in wires with overlapping layers of magnetic insulator and superconductor, but not in non-overlapping structures. We show that this behavior…
Hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowires are predicted to undergo a field-induced phase transition from a trivial to a topological superconductor, marked by the closure and re-opening of the excitation gap, followed by the emergence of Majorana bound states at the nanowire ends. Many local density-of-states measurements have reported signatures of the topological phase, however this interpretation has been challenged by alternative explanations. Here, by measuring nonlocal conductance, we identify the closure of the excitation gap in the bulk of the semiconductor before the emergence of z…

Superconductor-semiconductor hybrid devices are at the heart of several proposed approaches to quantum information processing, but their basic properties remain to be understood. We embed a two-dimensional Al-InAs hybrid system in a resonant microwave circuit, probing the breakdown of superconductivity due to an applied magnetic field. We find a strong fingerprint from the two-component nature of the hybrid system, and quantitatively compare with a theory that includes the contribution of intraband $p \pm i p$ pairing in the InAs, as well as the emergence of Bogoliubov-Fermi surfaces due to ma…
We investigate the emergence and consequences of odd-frequency spin-triplet s-wave pairing in superconducting hybrid junctions at the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator without any magnetism. More specifically, we consider several different normal-superconductor hybrid systems at the topological insulator edge, where spin-singlet s-wave superconducting pairing is proximity-induced from an external conventional superconductor. We perform fully analytical calculations and show that odd-frequency mixed spin-triplet s-wave pairing arises due to the unique spin-momentum locking in the …

Hybrid system composed by a semiconducting nanowire with proximity-induced superconductivity and a quantum dot at the end working as spectrometer was recently used to quantify the so-called degree of Majorana nonlocality [Deng et al., Phys.Rev.B, 98, 085125 (2018)]. Here we demonstrate that spin-resolved density of states of the dot responsible for zero-bias conductance peak strongly depends on the separation between the Majorana bound states (MBSs) and their relative couplings with the dot and investigate how the charging energy affects the spectrum of the system in the distinct scenarios of …
We study the electronic structure of full-shell superconductor-semiconductor nanowires, which have recently been proposed for creating Majorana zero modes, using an eight-band $\vec{k} \cdot \vec{p}$ model within a fully self-consistent Schrödinger-Poisson scheme. We find that the spin-orbit coupling induced by the intrinsic radial electric field is generically weak for sub-bands with their minimum near the Fermi energy. Furthermore, we show that the chemical potential windows consistent with the emergence of a topological phase are small and sparse and can only be reached by fine tunning the …
We analyze theoretically two different setups for s-wave superconductivity (SC) proximitized $j=3/2$ particles in Luttinger materials that are able to host Majorana bound states (MBSs). First, we consider a one-dimensional SC wire with intrinsic bulk inversion asymmetry (BIA). In contrast to wires, modeled by a quadratic dispersion with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, there are two topological phase transitions in our systems at finite magnetic fields. Second, we analyze a two-dimensional Josephson junction on the Luttinger model finding a topological region even in the absence of BIA and Rashba s…
Establishing the hybrid entanglement among a growing number of matter and photonic quantum bits is necessary for the scalable quantum computation and long distance quantum communication. Here we demonstrate that charged excitonic complexes forming in strongly correlated quantum dot molecules are able to generate tripartite hybrid entanglement under proper carrier quantization. The mixed orbitals of the molecule construct multilevel ground states with sub-meV hole tunneling energy and relatively large electron hybridization energy. We show that appropriate size and interdot spacing maintains th…
There has been recent interest in superconductor-magnetic insulator hybrid Rashba nanowire setups for potentially hosting Majorana zero modes at smaller external Zeeman fields. Using the non-equilibrium Green's function technique, we develop a quantum transport model that accounts for the interplay between the quasiparticle dynamics in the superconductor-magnetic insulator bilayer structure and the transport processes through the Rashba nanowire. We provide an analysis of three-terminal setups to probe the local and non-local conductance in clean and disordered nanowires. We uncover the gap cl…
Hybrid semiconductor/superconductor nanowires constitute a pervasive platform for studying gate-tunable superconductivity and the emergence of topological behavior. Their low-dimensionality and crystal structure flexibility facilitate novel heterostructure growth and efficient material optimization; crucial prerequisites for accurately constructing complex multi-component quantum materials. Here, we present an extensive optimization of Sn growth on InSb, InAsSb and InAs nanowires. We demonstrate how the growth conditions and the crystal structure/symmetry of the semiconductor drive the formati…
Graphene is a sturdy and chemically inert material exhibiting an exposed two-dimensional electron gas of high mobility. These combined properties enable the design of graphene composites either based on covalent or non- covalent coupling of adsorbates, or on multilayered structures. These systems have exhibited novel tunable electronic properties such as bandgap- engineering, reversible metal/insulating transition or supramolecular spintronics. Tunable superconductivity is expected as well, but experimental realization is lacking. Here, we show experiments based on me tal/graphene hybrid compo…
