ALMA Multiple-Transition Molecular Line Observations of the Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxy IRAS 20551-4250: Different HCN, HCO+, HNC Excitation and Implications for Infrared Radiative Pumping
We present our ALMA multi-transition molecular line observational results for the ultraluminous infrared galaxy, IRAS 20551-4250, which is known to contain a luminous buried AGN and shows detectable vibrationally excited (v2=1f) HCN and HNC emission lines. The rotational J=1-0, 4-3, and 8-7 of HCN, HCO+, and HNC emission lines were clearly detected at a vibrational ground level (v=0). Vibrationally excited (v2=1f) J=4-3 emission lines were detected for HCN and HNC, but not for HCO+. Their observed flux ratios further support our previously obtained suggestion, based on J=3-2 data, that (1) infrared radiative pumping plays a role in rotational excitation at v=0, at least for HCN and HNC, and (2) HCN abundance is higher than HCO+ and HNC. The flux measurements of the isotopologue H13CN, H13CO+, and HN13C J=3-2 emission lines support the higher HCN abundance scenario. Based on modeling with collisional excitation, we constrain the physical properties of these line-emitting molecular gas, but find that higher HNC rotational excitation than HCN and HCO+ is difficult to explain, due to the higher effective critical density of HNC. We consider the effects of infrared radiative pumping using the available 5-30 micron infrared spectrum and find that our observational results are well explained if the radiation source is located at 30-100 pc from the molecular gas. The simultaneously covered very bright CO J=3-2 emission line displays a broad emission wing, which we interpret as being due to molecular outflow activity with the estimated rate of ~150 Msun/yr.
We review the reactions involving HCN and HNC in dark molecular clouds to elucidate new chemical sources and sinks of these isomers. We find that the most important reactions for the HCN-HNC system are Dissociative Recombination (DR) reactions of HCNH+ (HCNH+ + e-), the ionic CN + H3+, HCN + C+, HCN and HNC reactions with H+/He+/H3+/H3O+/HCO+, the N + CH2 reaction and two new reactions: H + CCN and C + HNC. We test the effect of the new rate constants and branching ratios on the predictions of gas-grain chemical models for dark cloud conditions. The rapid C + HNC reaction keeps the HCN/HNC rat…
Modeling of molecular emission from interstellar clouds requires the calculation of rates for excitation by collisions with the most abundant species. The present paper focuses on the calculation of rate coefficients for rotational excitation of the HCN and HNC molecules in their ground vibrational state in collision with He. The calculations are based on new two-dimensional potential energy surfaces obtained from highly correlated \textit{ab initio} calculations. Calculations of pure rotational (de)excitation cross sections of HCN and HNC by He were performed using the essentially exact close…
HNC and HCN, typically used as dense gas tracers in molecular clouds, are a pair of isomers that have great potential as a temperature probe because of temperature dependent, isomer-specific formation and destruction pathways. Previous observations of the HNC/HCN abundance ratio show that the ratio decreases with increasing temperature, something that standard astrochemical models cannot reproduce. We have undertaken a detailed parameter study on which environmental characteristics and chemical reactions affect the HNC/HCN ratio and can thus contribute to the observed dependence. Using existin…
We have studied 14 southern infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) using the data taken from the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz (MALT90) survey and the GLIMPSE and MIPSGAL mid-infrared survey of the inner Galaxy. The physical and chemical characteristics of the 14 IRDCs are investigated using N2H+(1-0), HNC(1-0), HCO+(1-0), and HCN(1-0) molecular lines. We find that the 14 IRDCs are in different evolutionary stages from the "starless" to the sources with an UCHII region. Three IRDCs are detected to have the star forming activities. The integrated intensity ratios I(HCO+)/I(HCN), I(N2H+)/I(HCN),…
We present the results of ALMA Cycle 2 observations of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy, IRAS 20551-4250, at HCN/HCO+/HNC J=3-2 lines at both vibrational-ground (v=0) and vibrationally excited (v2=1) levels. This galaxy contains a luminous buried active galactic nucleus (AGN), in addition to starburst activity, and our ALMA Cycle 0 data revealed a tentatively detected vibrationally excited HCN v2=1f J=4-3 emission line. In our ALMA Cycle 2 data, the HCN/HCO+/HNC J=3-2 emission lines at v=0 are clearly detected. The HCN and HNC v2=1f J=3-2 emission lines are also detected, but the HCO+ v2=1f J…
Context. The gas kinetic temperature (TK) determines the physical and chemical evolution of the Interestellar Medium (ISM). However, obtaining reliable TK estimates usually requires expensive observations including the combination of multi-line analysis and dedicated radiative transfer calculations. Aims. This work explores the use of HCN and HNC observations, and particularly its I(HCN)/I(HNC) intensity ratio of their J=1-0 lines, as direct probe of the gas kinetic temperature in the molecular ISM. Methods. We obtained a new set of large-scale observations of both HCN and HNC (1-0) lines alon…
HCN and its isomer HNC play an important role in molecular cloud chemistry and the formation of more complex molecules. We investigate here the impact of protostellar shocks on the HCN and HNC abundances from high-sensitivity IRAM 30m observations of the prototypical shock region L1157-B1 and the envelope of the associated Class 0 protostar, as a proxy for the pre-shock gas. The isotopologues H$^{12}$CN, HN$^{12}$C, H$^{13}$CN, HN$^{13}$C, HC$^{15}$N, H$^{15}$NC, DCN and DNC were all detected towards both regions. Abundances and excitation conditions were obtained from radiative transfer analy…
We present the results of our ALMA observations of three AGN-dominated nuclei in optical Seyfert 1 galaxies (NGC 7469, I Zw 1, and IC 4329 A) and eleven luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with various levels of infrared estimated energetic contributions by AGNs at the HCN and HCO+ J=3-2 emission lines. The HCN and HCO+ J=3-2 emission lines are clearly detected at the main nuclei of all sources, except for IC 4329 A. The vibrationally excited (v2=1f) HCN J=3-2 and HCO+ J=3-2 emission lines are simultaneously covered, and HCN v2=1f J=3-2 emission line signatures are seen in the main nuclei of tw…
New HCN, HNC, and HCO+ measurements of 46 normal galaxies in transitions up to J=4-3 are included in a multitransition database covering HCN and HCO+ (130 galaxies) and HNC (94 galaxies). The near-linear luminosity relations are dominated by distance effects and do not reflect galaxy physical properties. Individual galaxies show significant dispersion in both their luminosity and line ratio. Line ratios do not correlate well with either luminosities or other line ratios. Only the normalized J-transition ladders of HCN and HCO+ and the J=1-0 12CO/13CO isotopologue ratio are positively correlate…
We report the results of interferometric HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) observations of four luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), NGC 2623, Mrk 266, Arp 193, and NGC 1377, as a final sample of our systematic survey using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. Our survey contains the most systematic interferometric, spatially-resolved, simultaneous HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) observations of LIRGs. Ground-based infrared spectra of these LIRGs are also presented to elucidate the nature of the energy sources at the nuclei. We derive the HCN(1-0)/HCO+(1-0) brightness-temperature ratios of these LIRGs and confirm the pr…
We analyze HCN and HNC emission in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 to investigate its effectiveness in tracing heating processes associated with star formation. This study uses multiple HCN and HNC rotational transitions observed using ALMA via the ALCHEMI Large Program. To understand the conditions and associated heating mechanisms within NGC 253's dense gas, we employ Bayesian nested sampling techniques applied to chemical and radiative transfer models which are constrained using our HCN and HNC measurements. We find that the volume density $n_{\text{H}_{2}}$ and cosmic ray ionization ra…
We attempt to characterise the chemical properties of a sample of massive clumps of IRDCs through multi-molecular line observations. We also search for possible evolutionary trends among the derived chemical parameters. The clumps are studied using the MALT90 line survey data obtained with the Mopra telescope. The spectral-line data are used in concert with our previous LABOCA 870-$μ$m dust emission data. Most of the detected species (SiO, C$_2$H, HNCO, HCN, HCO$^+$, HNC, HC$_3$N, and N$_2$H$^+$) show spatially extended emission towards many of the sources. The fractional abundances of the mol…
Aims: Our goal is to study the chemical composition of the outflows of active galactic nuclei and starburst galaxies. Methods: We obtained high-resolution interferometric observations of HCN and HCO$^+$ $J=1\rightarrow0$ and $J=2\rightarrow1$ of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Mrk~231 with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. We also use previously published observations of HCN and HCO$^+$ $J=1\rightarrow0$ and $J=3\rightarrow2$, and HNC $J=1\rightarrow0$ in the same source. Results: In the line wings of the HCN, HCO$^+$, and HNC emission, we find that these three molecular species exhib…
We present results from a study of nitrogen chemistry in Class 0/I proto-brown dwarfs (proto-BDs). We have used the IRAM 30 m telescope to observe the CN (2-1), HCN (3-2), and HNC (3-2) lines in 7 proto-BDs. All proto-BDs show a large CN/HCN abundance ratio of >20, and a HNC/HCN abundance ratio close to or larger than unity. The enhanced CN/HCN ratios can be explained by high UV flux originating from an active accretion zone in the proto-BDs. The larger than unity HNC/HCN ratio for the proto-BDs is likely caused by a combination of low temperature and high density. Both CN and HNC show a flat …
Aims. The comparative study of several molecular species at the origin of the gas phase chemistry in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) is a key input in unraveling the coupled chemical and dynamical evolution of the ISM. Methods. The lowest rotational lines of HCO+, HCN, HNC, and CN were observed at the IRAM-30m telescope in absorption against the λ3 mm and λ1.3 mm continuum emission of massive star-forming regions in the Galactic plane. The absorption lines probe the gas over kiloparsecs along these lines of sight. The excitation temperatures of HCO+ are inferred from the comparison of th…
Both Galactic and extragalactic studies on star formation suggest that stars form directly from dense molecular gas. To trace such high volume density gas, HCN and HCO+ J=1-0 have been widely used for their high dipole moments, relatively high abundances, and often being the strongest lines after CO. However, HCN and HCO+ J=1-0 emission could be arguably dominated by the gas components at low volume densities. HCN J=2-1 and HCO+ J=2-1, with more suitable critical densities and excitation requirements, would trace typical dense gas closely related to star formation. Here we report new observati…

Dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at redshift z$\geq$1 are among the most vigorously star-forming galaxies in the Universe. However, their dense ($\geq$10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$ ) gas phase - typically traced by HCN(1-0) - remains almost entirely unexplored: only two DSFGs have been detected in HCN(1-0) to date. We present results of a JVLA survey of the J=1-0 transition of HCN, HCO+, and HNC(1-0) in six strongly lensed DSFGs at z = 2.5 - 3.3, effectively doubling the number of DSFGs with deep observations of these lines. We detect HCN(1-0) emission in one source (J1202+5354, 4.4$σ$), with a tentativ…
We present new observations of HCN and HCO+in the circumnuclear disk (CND) of the Galaxy, obtained with the APEX telescope. We have mapped emission in rotational lines of HCN J = 3-2, 4-3, and 8-7, as well as HCO+ J = 3-2, 4-3, and 9-8. We also present spectra of H13CN and H13CO+ toward four positions in the CND. Using the intensities of all of these lines, we present an excitation analysis for each molecule using the non-LTE radiative transfer code RADEX. The HCN line intensities toward the northern emission peak of the CND yield log densities (cm^-3) of 5.6 +0.6/-0.6, consistent with those m…
We present new IRAM 30m spectroscopic observations of the $\sim88$ GHz band, including emission from the CCH (n=1-0) multiplet, HCN (1-0), HCO+ (1-0), and HNC (1-0), for a sample of 58 local luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies from the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). By combining our new IRAM data with literature data and Spitzer/IRS spectroscopy, we study the correspondence between these putative tracers of dense gas and the relative contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star formation to the mid-infrared luminosity of each system. We find the HCN (1-0) em…
Investigating star formation requires precise knowledge of the properties of the dense molecular gas. The low metallicity and wide range of star formation activity of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds make them prime laboratories to study how local physical conditions impact the dense gas reservoirs. The aim of the Dense Gas Survey for the Magellanic Clouds (DeGaS-MC) project is to expand our knowledge of the relation between dense gas properties and star formation activity by targeting the LMC and SMC observed in the HCO+(2-1) and HCN(2-1) transitions. We carried out a pointing survey tow…
We obtained high resolution (0."25 to 0."90) observations of HCN and HCO+ J=3-2 of the ultraluminous QSO galaxy Mrk231 with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. We find luminous HCN and HCO+ 3-2 emission in the main disk and we detect compact (r<90 pc) vibrationally excited HCN 3-2, v2=1f emission centred on the nucleus. The velocity field of the vibrationally excited HCN is strongly inclined (PA=155 deg.) compared to the east-west rotation of the main disk. The nuclear molecular mass is estimated to 8e8 Msun with an average N(H2)of 1.2e24 cm-2. Prominent, spatially extended (>350 pc) line…
(Abridged) As the stellar X-ray and UV light penetration of a protoplanetary disk depends sensitively on the dust properties, trace molecular species like HCO+, HCN, and CN are expected to show marked differences from photoprocessing effects as the dust content in the disk evolves. We investigate the evolution of the UV irradiation of the molecular gas in a sample of classical T Tauri stars in Taurus that exhibit a wide range in grain growth and dust settling properties. We obtained HCO+ (J=3-2), HCN (J=3-2), and CN (J=2-1) observations of 13 sources with the JCMT. Our sample has 1.3mm fluxes …
We mapped 3 mm continuum and line emission from the starburst galaxy M82 using the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy. We targeted the HCN, HCO$^{+}$, HNC, CS and HC$_{3}$N lines, but here we focus on the HCN and HCO$^{+}$ emission. The map covers a field of 1.2' with a ~5" resolution. The HCN and HCO$^{+}$ observations are combined with single dish images. The molecular gas in M82 had been previously found to be distributed in a molecular disk, coincident with the central starburst, and a galactic scale outflow which originates in the central starburst. With the new shor…
Observations of molecular clouds, prestellar cores, and protoplanetary disks have established that the HNC/HCN ratio may be a potent diagnostic of molecular gas physical conditions. The processes that govern the relative abundances of these molecules nevertheless remain poorly understood. We seek to exploit the wide range of UV irradiation strengths within the 1 pc diameter Helix planetary nebula to explore the potential role of UV radiation in driving HNC/HCN. We performed IRAM 30 m and APEX 12 m radio line observations across six positions within the Helix Nebula, making use of radiative tra…
The HCN, HCO+, and HNC molecules are commonly used as tracers of dense star-forming gas in external galaxies, but such observations are spatially unresolved. Reliably inferring the properties of galactic nuclei and disks requires detailed studies of sources whose structure is spatially resolved. We compare the spatial distributions and abundance ratios of HCN, HCO+, and HNC in W49A, the most massive and luminous star-forming region in the Galactic disk, based on maps of a 2' (6.6 pc) field at 14" (0.83 pc) resolution of the J=4-3 transitions of HCN, H13CN, HC15N, HCO+, H13CO+, HC18O+ and HNC. …
We present the results of a large-scale survey of the very dense gas in the Perseus molecular cloud using HCO+ and HCN (J = 4 - 3) transitions. We have used this emission to trace the structure and kinematics of gas found in pre- and protostellar cores, as well as in outflows. We compare the HCO+/HCN data, highlighting regions where there is a marked discrepancy in the spectra of the two emission lines. We use the HCO+ to identify positively protostellar outflows and their driving sources, and present a statistical analysis of the outflow properties that we derive from this tracer. We find tha…
We present observations of the dense molecular gas tracers HCN, HNC, and HCO+ in the J=1-0 transition using ALMA. We supplement our datasets with previous observations of CO J=1-0, which traces the total molecular gas content. We separate the Antennae into 7 bright regions in which we detect emission from all three molecules, including the nuclei of NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, 5 super giant molecular complexes in the overlap region and 2 additional bright clouds. We find that the ratio of L(HCN)/L(CO), which traces the dense molecular gas fraction, is greater in the two nuclei (L(HCN)/L(CO) ~ 0.07 …
We present the results of high spatial resolution HCO$^{+}$($1-0$) and HCN($1-0$) observations of N55 south region (N55-S) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). N55-S is a relatively less extreme star-forming region of the LMC characterized by a low radiation field. We carried out a detailed analysis of the molecular emission to investigate the relation between dense molecular clumps and star formation in the quiescent environment of N55-S. We detect ten molecular clumps with significant HCO$^{+}(1-0)$ emission and eight wit…
We present the first mid-infrared (MIR) detections of HNC and H13CN in the interstellar medium, and numerous, resolved HCN rovibrational transitions. Our observations span 12.8 to 22.9 micron towards the hot core Orion IRc2, obtained with the Echelon-Cross-Echelle Spectrograph aboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). Exceptional, ~5 km/s, resolution distinguishes individual rovibrational transitions of the HNC and HCN P, Q, and R branches; and the H13CN R branch. This allows direct measurement of the species' excitation temperatures, column densities, and relative a…
The Plateau de Bure Interferometer has been used to map the continuum emission at 3.4 mm and 1.1 mm together with the J=1->0 and J=3->2 lines of HCN and HCO+ towards the binary star GV Tau. The 3.4 mm observations did not resolve the binary components and the HCN J=1->0 and HCO+ J=1->0 line emissions trace the circumbinary disk and the flattened envelope. However, the 1.1 mm observations resolved the individual disks of GV Tau N and GV Tau S and allowed us to study their chemistry. We detected the HCN 3->2 line only towards the individual disk of GV Tau N, and the emission of the HCO+ 3->2 lin…
Quantum chemical cluster calculations show that reactions of C$^+$ with HCN or HNC embedded in the surface of an icy grain mantle can account for the formation of a recently detected molecule, glycolonitrile, which is considered to be an important precursor to ribonucleic compounds. Reactions of cations deposited on ice mantles with minimal kinetic energy have been found theoretically to result in previously unknown pathways to significant organic compounds in protostellar systems and the interstellar medium. In density functional theory cluster calculations involving up to 24H$_2$O, C$^+$ rea…
The distributions and abundances of molecules in protoplanetary disks are powerful tracers of the physical and chemical disk structures. The abundance ratios of HCN and its isomer HNC are known to be sensitive to gas temperature. Their line ratios might therefore offer a unique opportunity to probe the properties of the emitting gas. Using the 2D thermochemical code DALI, we ran a set of disk models accounting for different stellar and disk properties, with an updated chemical network for the nitrogen chemistry. These modeling results were then compared with observations, including new ALMA ob…
To study the high-transition dense-gas tracers and their relationships to the star formation of the inner $\sim$ 2 kpc circumnuclear region of NGC253, we present HCN $J=4-3$ and HCO$^+ J=4-3$ maps obtained with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). With the spatially resolved data, we compute the concentration indices $r_{90}/r_{50}$ for the different tracers. HCN and HCO$^+$ 4-3 emission features tend to be centrally concentrated, which is in contrast to the shallower distribution of CO 1-0 and the stellar component. The dense-gas fraction ($f_\text{dense}$, traced by the velocity-integra…
There is a linear relation between the mass of dense gas, traced by the HCN(1-0) luminosity, and the star formation rate (SFR), traced by the far-infrared luminosity. Recent observations of galactic disks have shown some systematic variations. In order to explore the SFR-dense gas link at high resolution ($\sim 4"$, $\sim 150$ pc) in the outer disk of an external galaxy, we have mapped a region about 5 kpc from the center along the northern spiral arm of M51 in the HCN(1-0), HCO$^+$(1-0) and HNC(1-0) emission lines using the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) interferometer. The HCN an…
Certain planetary nebulae contain shells, filaments, or globules of cold gas and dust whose heating and chemistry are likely driven by UV and X-ray emission from their central stars and from wind-collision-generated shocks. We present the results of a survey of molecular line emission in the 88-236 GHz range from nine nearby (<1.5 kpc) planetary nebulae spanning a range of UV and X-ray luminosities, using the 30 m telescope of the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimetrique. Rotational transitions of thirteen molecules, including CO isotopologues and chemically important trace species, were obse…
We present the results of our ALMA observations of eleven (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ((U)LIRGs) at J=4-3 of HCN, HCO+, HNC and J=3-2 of HNC. This is an extension of our previously published HCN and HCO+ J=3-2 observations to multiple rotational J-transitions of multiple molecules, to investigate how molecular emission line flux ratios vary at different J-transitions. We confirm that ULIRGs that contain or may contain luminous obscured AGNs tend to show higher HCN-to-HCO+ flux ratios than starburst galaxies, both at J=4-3 and J=3-2. For selected HCN-flux-enhanced AGN-important ULIRGs, ou…
Dense molecular gas and star formation are correlated in galaxies. The effect of low metallicity on this relationship is crucial for interpreting observations of high redshift galaxies, which have lower metallicities than galaxies today. However, it remains relatively unexplored because dense molecular gas tracers like HCN and HCO+ are faint in low metallicity systems. We present Green Bank Telescope observations of HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) on giant molecular cloud (34pc) scales in the nearby low metallicity ($12+\log({\rm O/H})=8.2$) starburst IC 10 and compare them to those in other galaxies. …
Unmasking the physical information inherent to interstellar spectral line profiles with Machine Learning. I. Application of LTE to HCN and HNC transitions
HCN, HNC, and their isotopologues are ubiquitous molecules that can serve as chemical thermometers and evolutionary tracers to characterize star-forming regions. Despite their importance in carrying information that is vital to studies of the chemistry and evolution of star-forming regions, the collision rates of some of these molecules have not been available for rigorous studies in the past. We perform an up-to-date gas and dust chemical characterization of two different star-forming regions, TMC 1-C and NGC 1333-C7, using new collisional rates of HCN, HNC, and their isotopologues. We invest…
6.7 GHz methanol masers are the brightest of class II methanol masers that are regarded as excellent signposts in the formation of young massive stars. We present here a molecular line study of 68 6.7 GHz methanol maser hosts chosen from the MMB catalogue, that have MALT90 data available. We performed (1) pixel-by-pixel study of 9 methanol maser sources that have high signal-to-noise ratio and (2) statistical study taking into account the entire 68 sources. We estimated the molecular column densities and abundances of N$_2$H$^+$(1-0), HCO$^+$(1-0), HCN(1-0) and HNC(1-0) lines. The derived abun…
We present 2" - 10" imaging of eleven transitions from nine molecular species across the nuclear bar in Maffei 2. The data were obtained with the BIMA and OVRO interferometers. The ten detected transitions are compared with existing CO isotopologues, HCN, CS and millimeter continuum data. Dramatic spatial variations among the mapped species are observed across the nuclear bar. A principle component analysis is performed to characterize correlations between the transitions, star formation and molecular column density. The analysis reveals that HCN, HNC, HCO+ and 3 mm continuum are tightly corre…
This {\it supplement} paper presents the maps of HCN $J$=4-3, HNC $J$=1-0, $\mathrm{H^{13}CN}$ $J$=1-0, and HC$_3$N $J$=10-9 for the Galactic central molecular zone (CMZ), which have been obtained using the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment and Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45-m telescope. Three-dimensional maps (2-D in space and 1-D in velocity) of the gas kinetic temperature ($T_\mathrm{kin}$), hydrogen volume density ($n_\mathrm{H_2}$), and fractional abundances of eight molecules (HCN, HNC, $\mathrm{HC_3N}$, HCO$^+$, $\mathrm{H_2CO}$, SiO, CS, and $\mathrm{N_2H^+}$) have been constru…
A sample of 30 H2O extra-galactic maser galaxies with their published HCN(J=1-0) and HCO+(J=1-0) observations has been compiled to investigate the dense gas correlation with H2O maser emission. Our sample number exceeds the size of the previous HCN samples studied so far by a factor of three, and it is the first study on the possible relation with the dense gas tracer HCO+. We find a strong correlation between normalized H2O maser emission luminosity (LH2O\LCO) and normalized HCO+ line luminosity (LHCO+\LCO). Moreover, a weak correlation has been found between LH2O\LCO and normalized HCN line …
Stars form out of the densest parts of molecular clouds. Far-IR emission can be used to estimate the Star Formation Rate (SFR) and high dipole moment molecules, typically HCN, trace the dense gas. A strong correlation exists between HCN and Far-IR emission, with the ratio being nearly constant, over a large range of physical scales. A few recent observations have found HCN to be weak with respect to the Far-IR and CO in subsolar metallicity (low-Z) objects. We present observations of the Local Group galaxies M33, IC10, and NGC6822 with the IRAM 30meter and NRO 45m telescopes, greatly improving…
We report ~2" resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the HCN(1-0), HCO+(1-0), CO(1-0), CO(2-1), and CO(3-2) lines towards the nearby merging double-nucleus galaxy NGC 3256. We find that the high density gas outflow traced in HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) emission is co-located with the diffuse molecular outflow emanating from the southern nucleus, where a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) is believed to be the dominant source of the far-infrared luminosity. On the other hand, the same lines were undetected in the outflow region associated with the northern …
