We present the first threshold and jet radius jointly resummed cross section for single-inclusive hadronic jet production. We work at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and our framework allows for a systematic extension beyond the currently achieved precision. Longstanding numerical issues are overcome by performing the resummation directly in momentum space within Soft Collinear Effective Theory. We present the first numerical results for the LHC and observe an improved description of the available data. Our results are of immediate relevance for LHC precision phenomenology including the extraction of parton distribution functions and the QCD strong coupling constant.
We perform a detailed study of inclusive jet production cross sections at the LHC and compare the QCD theory predictions based on the recently developed formalism for threshold and jet radius joint resummation at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy to inclusive jet data collected by the CMS collaboration at $\sqrt{S} = 7$ and $13$TeV. We compute the cross sections at next-to-leading order in QCD with and without the joint resummation for different choices of jet radii $R$ and observe that the joint resummation leads to crucial improvements in the description of the data. Comprehensive studies…
The precision description of jet production plays an important role in many aspects of collider physics. In a recent paper we have presented a new factorization theorem for inclusive small radius jet production. The jet function appearing in our factorization theorem exhibits a non-standard renormalization group evolution, which, starting at next-to-leading logarithm (NLL), differs from previous results in the literature. In this paper we perform a first phenomenological study using our newly developed formalism, applying it to compute the spectrum of small radius jets in $e^+e^-\to J+X$ at NL…
We explore the effects of the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to double-longitudinal spin asymmetries for inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering in fixed-target experiments. We find that the asymmetries are overall rather robust with respect to the inclusion of the resummed higher-order terms. Significant effects are observed at fairly high values of x, where resummation tends to decrease the spin asymmetries. This effect turns out to be more pronounced for semi-inclusive scattering. We also investigate the potential impact of resummation on the extrac…
We propose and study the inclusive production of a forward $J/ψ$ and a very backward jet at the LHC as an observable to reveal high-energy resummation effects à la BFKL. Our different predictions are based on the various existing mechanisms to describe the production of the $J/ψ$, namely, NRQCD singlet and octet contributions, and the color evaporation model.
We investigate the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to hadron production in electron-positron annihilation and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. We find modest, but significant, enhancements of hadron multiplicities in the kinematic regimes accessible in present high-precision experiments. Our results are therefore relevant for the determination of hadron fragmentation functions from data for these processes.
We present a formalism and detailed analytical results for soft-gluon resummation for $2\rightarrow n$ processes in single-particle-inclusive (1PI) kinematics. This generalizes previous work on resummation for $2 \rightarrow 2$ processes in 1PI kinematics. We also present soft anomalous dimensions at one and two loops for certain $2 \rightarrow 3$ processes involving top quarks and Higgs or $Z$ bosons, and we provide some brief numerical results.
We present recent phenomenological studies, tailored on kinematic configurations typical of current and forthcoming analyses at the LHC, for two novel probe channels of the BFKL resummation of energy logarithms. Particular attention is drawn to the behavior of distributions differential in azimuthal angle and rapidity, where significant high-energy effects are expected.
The QCD predictions for single-inclusive jet production are computed with joint resummation of threshold and jet radius logarithms. The results are compared to those based on fixed order perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order and to data by the CMS collaboration measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{S}=8$ TeV. The joint resummation results are in remarkable agreement with the data.
We introduce a new kind of jet function: the semi-inclusive jet function $J_i(z, ω_J, μ)$, which describes how a parton $i$ is transformed into a jet with a jet radius $R$ and energy fraction $z = ω_J/ω$, with $ω_J$ and $ω$ being the large light-cone momentum component of the jet and the corresponding parton $i$ that initiates the jet, respectively. Within the framework of Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) we calculate both $J_q(z, ω_J, μ)$ and $J_g(z, ω_J, μ)$ to the next-to-leading order (NLO) for cone and anti-k$_{\rm T}$ algorithms. We demonstrate that the renormalization group (RG) e…
We consider the cross section for one-particle inclusive production at high transverse momentum in hadronic collisions. We present the all-order resummation formula that controls the logarithmically-enhanced perturbative QCD contributions to the partonic cross section in the threshold region, at fixed rapidity of the observed parton (hadron). The explicit resummation up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy is supplemented with the computation of the general structure of the near-threshold contributions to the next-to-leading order cross section. This next-to-leading order computation allows…
Based on the nonrelativistic QCD factorization theorem, we resum QCD corrections to the inclusive decay rate of $η_c$ and $η_b$ in the large-$n_f$ limit using bubble chain resummation. By employing dimensional regularization, we show explicitly the cancellation of the infrared renormalon ambiguity in the factorization formula at leading order in $v$ in the large-$n_f$ limit, where $v$ is the typical heavy quark velocity inside the meson. We also make predictions of the ratio of the inclusive decay rate to the decay rate into two photons. By comparing our results with a fixed-order calculation …
The complete soft-enhanced and virtual-gluon contributions are derived for the quark coefficient functions in semi-inclusive e^+e^- annihilation to the third order in massless perturbative QCD. These terms enable us to extend the soft-gluon resummation for the fragmentation functions by two orders to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N^3LL) accuracy. The resummation exponent is found to be the same as for the structure functions in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. This finding, together with known results on the higher-order quark form factor, facilitates the determination o…
We present analytic all-order results for the highest three threshold logarithms of the space-like and time-like off-diagonal splitting functions and the corresponding coefficient functions for inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and semi-inclusive e^+ e^- annihilation. All these results, obtained through an order-by-order analysis of the structure of the corresponding unfactorized quantities in dimensional regularization, can be expressed in terms of the Bernoulli functions introduced by one of us and leading-logarithmic soft-gluon exponentials. The resulting numerical corrections are s…
Over the past few years considerable progress has been made on the resummation of double-logarithmically enhanced threshold (large-x) and high-energy (small-x) higher-order contributions to the splitting functions for parton and fragmentation distributions and to the coefficient functions for inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and semi-inclusive e^+e^- annihilation. We present an overview of the methods which allow, in many cases, to derive the coefficients of the highest three logarithms at all orders in the strong coupling from next-to-next-to-leading order results in massless perturbative …
Using the standard Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) approach, with partial inclusion of next-to-leading order effects, we propose the inclusive hadroproduction of a Higgs boson and of a jet, featuring large transverse momenta and well separated in rapidity, as a new channel to probe the BFKL dynamics. Predictions are presented for cross-sections and azimuthal angle correlations in different kinematics configurations for the final-state transverse momenta. We find that the large energy scales provided by the emission of a Higgs boson stabilize the BFKL series.
We advance the threshold resummation formalism for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^{3}$LL) order, including the three-loop hard factor. We expand the results in the strong coupling to obtain approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^{3}$LO) corrections for the SIDIS cross section. In Mellin moment space, these corrections include all terms that are logarithmically enhanced at threshold, or that are constant. We also consider a set of corrections that are suppressed near threshold. Our numerical estimates show modes…
We study the factorization and resummation prediction on the jet mass spectrum in one-jet inclusive production at the LHC based on soft-collinear effective theory. The soft function with anti-$k_T$ algorithm is calculated at next-to-leading order and its validity is demonstrated by checking the agreement between the expanded leading singular terms with the exact fixed-order result. The large logarithms $\ln^{n} (m_J^2/p_T^2)$ and the global logarithms $\ln^{n} (s_4/p_T^2)$ in the process are resummed to all order at next-to-leading logarithmic and next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic level, res…

We present a combined resummation for the transverse momentum distribution of a colorless final state in perturbative QCD, expressed as a function of transverse momentum pt and the scaling variable x. Its expression satisfies three requirements: it reduces to standard transverse momentum resummation to any desired logarithmic order in the limit pt-> 0 for fixed x, up to power suppressed corrections in pt; it reduces to threshold resummation to any desired logarithmic order in the limit x-> 1 for fixed pt, up to power suppressed correction in 1-x; upon integration over transverse momentum it re…
Recently methods have been developed to extend the resummation of large-x double logarithms in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) to terms not addressed by the soft-gluon exponentiation. Here we briefly outline our approach based on fixed-order results, the general large-x structure in dimensional regularization and the all-order factorization of mass singularities, which is directly applicable also to semi-inclusive e+e- annihilation (SIA). We then present some main results for the corresponding timelike splitting functions and transverse and longitudinal fragmentation functions. The c…
We have derived the coefficients of the highest three 1/x-enhanced small-x logarithms of all timelike splitting functions and the coefficient functions for the transverse fragmentation function in one-particle inclusive e^+e^- annihilation at (in principle) all orders in massless perturbative QCD. For the longitudinal fragmentation function we present the respective two highest contributions. These results have been obtained from KLN-related decompositions of the unfactorized fragmentation functions in dimensional regularization and their structure imposed by the mass-factorization theorem. Th…
We study the cross section for the photoproduction reaction gamma N -> h X in fixed-target scattering at COMPASS, where the hadron h is produced at large transverse momentum. We investigate the role played by higher-order QCD corrections to the cross section. In particular we address large logarithmic "threshold" corrections to the rapidity dependent partonic cross sections, which we resum to all orders at next-to-leading accuracy. In our comparison to the experimental data we find that the threshold contributions are large and improve the agreement between data and theoretical predictions sig…
We present all-order results for the highest three large-x logarithms of the splitting functions P_qg and P_gq and of the coefficient functions C_phi,q, C_2,g and C_L,g for structure functions in Higgs- and gauge-boson exchange DIS in massless perturbative QCD. The corresponding coefficients have been derived by studying the unfactorized partonic structure functions in dimensional regularization independently in terms of their iterative structure and in terms of the constraints imposed by the functional forms of the real- and virtual-emission contributions together with their Kinoshita--Lee-Na…
We present a comprehensive study of high-energy double logarithms in inclusive DIS. They appear parametrically as alpha_s^n ln^{2n-k} x at the n-th order in perturbation theory in the splitting functions for the parton evolution and the coefficient functions for the hard scattering process, and represent the leading corrections at small $x$ in the flavour non-singlet case. We perform their resummation, in terms of modified Bessel functions, to all orders in full QCD up to NNLL accuracy, and partly to N^3LL and beyond in the large-n_c limit, and provide fixed-order expansions up to five loops. …
We investigate the inclusive hadroproduction of a Higgs boson in association with a jet, featuring large transverse momenta and separated by a large rapidity distance. We propose this reaction, that can be studied at the LHC as well as at new-generation colliding machines, as a novel probe channel for the manifestation of the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) dynamics. We bring evidence that high-energy resummed distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum exhibit a solid stability under higher-order corrections, thus offering us a faultless chance to gauge the feasibility of precision…
We study single-particle inclusive (1PI) distributions in top-quark pair production at hadron colliders, working in the highly boosted regime where the top-quark p_T is much larger than its mass. In particular, we derive a novel factorization formula valid in the small-mass and soft limits of the differential partonic cross section. This provides a framework for the simultaneous resummation of soft gluon corrections and small-mass logarithms, and also an efficient means of obtaining higher-order corrections to the differential cross section in this limit. The result involves five distinct one-…
We present calculations of next-to-leading order and resummed QCD corrections for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and single-inclusive e+e- annihilation. The resummation is performed to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Knowing these QCD corrections is important in order to extract parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions from present and future data for these reactions. We present comparisons of our results to recent data by the COMPASS, HERMES, Belle, and BaBar experiments.
We present a computation of the inclusive Drell-Yan production cross-section in perturbative QCD to all orders in the limit of high partonic centre-of-mass energy. We compare our results to the fixed order NLO and NNLO results in MSbar scheme, and provide predictions at NNNLO and beyond. Our expressions may be used to obtain fully resummed results for the inclusive cross-section.
We study the semi-inclusive limit of the deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan (DY) processes in soft collinear effective theory. In this regime so-called threshold logarithms must be resummed to render perturbation theory well behaved. Part of this resummation occurs via the Dokshitzer, Gribov, Lipatov, Altarelli, Parisi (DGLAP) equation, which at threshold contains a large logarithm that calls into question the convergence of the anomalous dimension. We demonstrate here that the problematic logarithm is related to rapidity divergences, and by introducing a rapidity regulator can be tamed. …
We study the single hadron inclusive production in the forward rapidity region in proton-nucleus collisions. We find the long-standing negative cross section at next-to-leading-order (NLO) is driven by the large negative threshold logarithmic contributions. We established a factorization theorem for resumming these logarithms with systematically improvable accuracy within the color glass condensate formalism. We demonstrate how the threshold leading logarithmic accuracy can be realized by a suitable scale choice in the NLO results. The NLO spectrums with the threshold logarithms resummed remai…
We discuss hadron mass corrections and threshold resummation for deep-inelastic scattering $\ell N\rightarrow\ell' X$ and semi-inclusive annihilation $e^+e^-\rightarrow h X$ processes, and provide a prescription how to consistently combine these two corrections respecting all kinematic thresholds. We find an interesting interplay between threshold resummation and target mass corrections for deep-inelastic scattering at large values of Bjorken $x_B$. In semi-inclusive annihilation, on the contrary, the two considered corrections are relevant in different kinematic regions and do not affect each…
We derive the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization and resummation formula of the unpolarized transverse momentum distribution ($j_T$) for the single hadron production with the thrust axis in electron-positron collision. Two different kinematic regions are considered, including small transverse momentum limit $j_T \ll Q$, and joint transverse momentum and threshold limit $j_T \ll Q(1-z_h) \ll Q$, where $Q$ and $z_h$ are the hard scattering energy and the observed hadron momentum fraction. Using effective theory methods, we resum logarithms $\ln(Q/j_T)$ and $\ln(1-z_h)$ to all orde…
Following on our earlier work on leading-logarithmic (LLR) resummations for the properties of jets with a small radius, R, we here examine the phenomenological considerations for the inclusive jet spectrum. We discuss how to match the NLO predictions with small-R resummation. As part of the study we propose a new, physically-inspired prescription for fixed-order predictions and their uncertainties. We investigate the R-dependent part of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections, which is found to be substantial, and comment on the implications for scale choices in inclusive jet calc…
