The QCD predictions for single-inclusive jet production are computed with joint resummation of threshold and jet radius logarithms. The results are compared to those based on fixed order perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order and to data by the CMS collaboration measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{S}=8$ TeV. The joint resummation results are in remarkable agreement with the data.
We show that the resummation technique developed recently for heavy-light systems and the conventional approach based on the factorization of Wilson loops are equivalent. The two methods lead to the same results of the resummation of large corrections in inclusive $B$ meson decays.
We explore the effects of the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to double-longitudinal spin asymmetries for inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering in fixed-target experiments. We find that the asymmetries are overall rather robust with respect to the inclusion of the resummed higher-order terms. Significant effects are observed at fairly high values of x, where resummation tends to decrease the spin asymmetries. This effect turns out to be more pronounced for semi-inclusive scattering. We also investigate the potential impact of resummation on the extrac…
We derive threshold resummations for single-particle and single-jet inclusive cross sections, thus generalizing previous results at fixed invariant mass to a wider class of cross sections with phenomenological interest. We confirm the structure of our resummed expressions by comparison with explicit one-loop calculations for direct photons and heavy quarks.
We investigate the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to hadron production in electron-positron annihilation and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. We find modest, but significant, enhancements of hadron multiplicities in the kinematic regimes accessible in present high-precision experiments. Our results are therefore relevant for the determination of hadron fragmentation functions from data for these processes.
We present a formalism and detailed analytical results for soft-gluon resummation for $2\rightarrow n$ processes in single-particle-inclusive (1PI) kinematics. This generalizes previous work on resummation for $2 \rightarrow 2$ processes in 1PI kinematics. We also present soft anomalous dimensions at one and two loops for certain $2 \rightarrow 3$ processes involving top quarks and Higgs or $Z$ bosons, and we provide some brief numerical results.
We discuss resummation of large logarithmic terms that appear in the cross-section of semi-inclusive DIS in the case when the final-state hadron follows the direction of the incoming electroweak vector boson in the c.m. frame of the vector boson and the initial-state proton.
We present recent phenomenological studies, tailored on kinematic configurations typical of current and forthcoming analyses at the LHC, for two novel probe channels of the BFKL resummation of energy logarithms. Particular attention is drawn to the behavior of distributions differential in azimuthal angle and rapidity, where significant high-energy effects are expected.
We study the transverse-momentum distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. We consider cross sections for various combinations of the polarizations of the initial lepton and nucleon or the produced hadron, for which we perform the resummation of large double-logarithmic perturbative corrections arising at small transverse momentum. We present phenomenological results for the process $ep\to eπX$ for the typical kinematics in the COMPASS experiment. We discuss the impact of the perturbative resummation and of estimated non-perturbative contributions on the cor…
In this paper we discuss the theoretical difficulties in extracting $V_{ub}$ using the data from inclusive B decays. Specifically, we address the issue of the end point singularities. We perform the resummation of both the leading and next to leading end point logs and include the leading corrections to the hard scattering amplitude. We find that the resummation is a $20\%-50\%$ effect in the end point region where the resummation is valid. Furthermore, the resummed sub-leading logs dominate the resummed double logs. The consequences of this result for a model independent extraction of the mix…
We present a Borel resummation method for the QCD corrections in inclusive, charmless, semileptonic B meson decay. The renormalon contributions are resummed to all orders by employing a bilocal expansion of the Borel transform that accurately accounts for the first infrared renormalons in the Borel plane. The renormalons in the pole mass and the QCD expansion are resummed separately, and a precise relation is obtained between a properly defined pole mass and the ${\bar {\rm MS}}$ mass. The inclusive decay rate is calculated to three loop order using an estimate of the yet unknown NNLO coeffici…
We present a formalism that improves the applicability of perturbative QCD in the current region of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The formalism is based on all-order resummation of large logarithms arising in the perturbative treatment of hadron multiplicities and energy flows in this region. It is shown that the current region of semi-inclusive DIS is similar to the region of small transverse momenta in vector boson production at hadron colliders. We use this resummation formalism to describe transverse energy flows and charged particle multiplicity measured at the electron-proton…
We consider the cross section for one-particle inclusive production at high transverse momentum in hadronic collisions. We present the all-order resummation formula that controls the logarithmically-enhanced perturbative QCD contributions to the partonic cross section in the threshold region, at fixed rapidity of the observed parton (hadron). The explicit resummation up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy is supplemented with the computation of the general structure of the near-threshold contributions to the next-to-leading order cross section. This next-to-leading order computation allows…
We investigate the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the partonic cross sections for single-inclusive high-p_T hadron production in collisions of transversely polarized hadrons. We perform the resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Phenomenological results are given for pbar-p collisions at center-of-mass energy of 14.5 GeV and for p-p collisions at 62.4 GeV and at 10 GeV, which are relevant for possible experiments at the GSI-FAIR, RHIC and J-PARC facilities, respectively. We find significant enhancements of the spin-dependent and spin-averaged cross s…
We study the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to the partonic cross sections relevant for the process pp->h X at high transverse momentum of the hadron h. These corrections arise near the threshold for the partonic reaction and are associated with soft-gluon emission. We perform the resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We present numerical results for the fixed-target regime and find enhancements over the next-to-leading order cross section, which significantly improve the agreement between theoretical predictions and data. We also apply the resummation…
The complete soft-enhanced and virtual-gluon contributions are derived for the quark coefficient functions in semi-inclusive e^+e^- annihilation to the third order in massless perturbative QCD. These terms enable us to extend the soft-gluon resummation for the fragmentation functions by two orders to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N^3LL) accuracy. The resummation exponent is found to be the same as for the structure functions in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. This finding, together with known results on the higher-order quark form factor, facilitates the determination o…
We discuss threshold resummation in radiative and charmless semileptonic B decays. To deal with the large non perturbative effects, we introduce a model for NNLL resummed form factors based on the analytic QCD coupling. By means of this model we can reproduce with good accuracy the experimental data. Finally we briefly present an improved threshold resummed formula to deal with jets initiated by massive quarks as in the case of semileptonic charmed decays.
We present analytic all-order results for the highest three threshold logarithms of the space-like and time-like off-diagonal splitting functions and the corresponding coefficient functions for inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and semi-inclusive e^+ e^- annihilation. All these results, obtained through an order-by-order analysis of the structure of the corresponding unfactorized quantities in dimensional regularization, can be expressed in terms of the Bernoulli functions introduced by one of us and leading-logarithmic soft-gluon exponentials. The resulting numerical corrections are s…
Over the past few years considerable progress has been made on the resummation of double-logarithmically enhanced threshold (large-x) and high-energy (small-x) higher-order contributions to the splitting functions for parton and fragmentation distributions and to the coefficient functions for inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and semi-inclusive e^+e^- annihilation. We present an overview of the methods which allow, in many cases, to derive the coefficients of the highest three logarithms at all orders in the strong coupling from next-to-next-to-leading order results in massless perturbative …
We study the transverse-momentum distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS). We consider cross sections for various combinations of polarizations of the initial lepton and nucleon or the produced hadron, for which we perform the resummation of large double-logarithmic perturbative corrections arising at small transverse momentum. We present phenomenological results for the processes $lp\to lπX$ with longitudinally polarized leptons and protons. We discuss the impact of the perturbative resummation and of estimated non-perturbative contributions on the …
Using the standard Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) approach, with partial inclusion of next-to-leading order effects, we propose the inclusive hadroproduction of a Higgs boson and of a jet, featuring large transverse momenta and well separated in rapidity, as a new channel to probe the BFKL dynamics. Predictions are presented for cross-sections and azimuthal angle correlations in different kinematics configurations for the final-state transverse momenta. We find that the large energy scales provided by the emission of a Higgs boson stabilize the BFKL series.
We advance the threshold resummation formalism for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^{3}$LL) order, including the three-loop hard factor. We expand the results in the strong coupling to obtain approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^{3}$LO) corrections for the SIDIS cross section. In Mellin moment space, these corrections include all terms that are logarithmically enhanced at threshold, or that are constant. We also consider a set of corrections that are suppressed near threshold. Our numerical estimates show modes…

We present a combined resummation for the transverse momentum distribution of a colorless final state in perturbative QCD, expressed as a function of transverse momentum pt and the scaling variable x. Its expression satisfies three requirements: it reduces to standard transverse momentum resummation to any desired logarithmic order in the limit pt-> 0 for fixed x, up to power suppressed corrections in pt; it reduces to threshold resummation to any desired logarithmic order in the limit x-> 1 for fixed pt, up to power suppressed correction in 1-x; upon integration over transverse momentum it re…
Recently methods have been developed to extend the resummation of large-x double logarithms in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) to terms not addressed by the soft-gluon exponentiation. Here we briefly outline our approach based on fixed-order results, the general large-x structure in dimensional regularization and the all-order factorization of mass singularities, which is directly applicable also to semi-inclusive e+e- annihilation (SIA). We then present some main results for the corresponding timelike splitting functions and transverse and longitudinal fragmentation functions. The c…
Recently, we have developed a formalism to evaluate QCD loop diagrams with a single virtual gluon using a running coupling constant at the vertices. This corresponds to an all-order resummation of certain terms (the so-called renormalon chains) in a perturbative series and provides a generalization of the scale-setting prescription of Brodsky, Lepage and Mackenzie. In its original form, the method is applicable to Green functions without external gluons and to euclidean correlation functions. Here we generalize the approach to the case of cross sections and inclusive decay rates, which receive…
We have derived the coefficients of the highest three 1/x-enhanced small-x logarithms of all timelike splitting functions and the coefficient functions for the transverse fragmentation function in one-particle inclusive e^+e^- annihilation at (in principle) all orders in massless perturbative QCD. For the longitudinal fragmentation function we present the respective two highest contributions. These results have been obtained from KLN-related decompositions of the unfactorized fragmentation functions in dimensional regularization and their structure imposed by the mass-factorization theorem. Th…
We study the cross section for the photoproduction reaction gamma N -> h X in fixed-target scattering at COMPASS, where the hadron h is produced at large transverse momentum. We investigate the role played by higher-order QCD corrections to the cross section. In particular we address large logarithmic "threshold" corrections to the rapidity dependent partonic cross sections, which we resum to all orders at next-to-leading accuracy. In our comparison to the experimental data we find that the threshold contributions are large and improve the agreement between data and theoretical predictions sig…
We show that the resummation of large radiative corrections in QCD processes can be performed both in covariant gauge and in axial gauge. We extend the resummation technique to inclusive processes, concentrating on deeply inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan production, and inclusive heavy meson decays in end-point regions. Leading and next-to-leading logarithms produced by radiative corrections are organized into Sudakov factors, whose expressions are the same as those derived from the conventional Wilson-loop approach. The gauge invariance of the resummation in the end-point region is demonstrate…
We show that certain general properties of threshold and joint resummations in Drell-Yan cross sections hold as well for their crossed analogs in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and double-inclusive leptonic annihilation. We show that all plus-distribution corrections near threshold show the same structure, and are determined to all logarithmic order by two anomalous dimensions, one of which is a generalization of the D-term previously derived in Drell-Yan. We also discuss the possibility of universality in power corrections implied by the resummation.
We present all-order results for the highest three large-x logarithms of the splitting functions P_qg and P_gq and of the coefficient functions C_phi,q, C_2,g and C_L,g for structure functions in Higgs- and gauge-boson exchange DIS in massless perturbative QCD. The corresponding coefficients have been derived by studying the unfactorized partonic structure functions in dimensional regularization independently in terms of their iterative structure and in terms of the constraints imposed by the functional forms of the real- and virtual-emission contributions together with their Kinoshita--Lee-Na…
We apply the operator product expansion to resum the leading nonperturbative corrections to the endpoint region of the lepton spectrum in inclusive semileptonic $B\to X_q\,\ell\,\barν$ decays, taking into account a finite quark mass $m_q$ in the final state. We show that both for $b\to c$ and $b\to u$ transitions, it is consistent to describe these effects by a convolution of the parton model spectrum with a fundamental light-cone structure function. The moments of this function are proportional to forward matrix elements of higher-dimension operators. The prospects for an extraction of the st…
We define a general scheme for the evolution of fragmentation functions which resums soft gluon logarithms in a manner consistent with fixed order evolution. We present an explicit example of our approach in which double logarithms are resummed using the Double Logarithmic Approximation. We show that this scheme reproduces the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation in certain limits, and find that after using it to fit quark and gluon fragmentation functions to experimental data,a good description of the data from the largest x values to the peak region in ln (1/x) is obtained. In addition, …
We present a comprehensive study of high-energy double logarithms in inclusive DIS. They appear parametrically as alpha_s^n ln^{2n-k} x at the n-th order in perturbation theory in the splitting functions for the parton evolution and the coefficient functions for the hard scattering process, and represent the leading corrections at small $x$ in the flavour non-singlet case. We perform their resummation, in terms of modified Bessel functions, to all orders in full QCD up to NNLL accuracy, and partly to N^3LL and beyond in the large-n_c limit, and provide fixed-order expansions up to five loops. …
We investigate the inclusive hadroproduction of a Higgs boson in association with a jet, featuring large transverse momenta and separated by a large rapidity distance. We propose this reaction, that can be studied at the LHC as well as at new-generation colliding machines, as a novel probe channel for the manifestation of the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) dynamics. We bring evidence that high-energy resummed distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum exhibit a solid stability under higher-order corrections, thus offering us a faultless chance to gauge the feasibility of precision…
We study single-particle inclusive (1PI) distributions in top-quark pair production at hadron colliders, working in the highly boosted regime where the top-quark p_T is much larger than its mass. In particular, we derive a novel factorization formula valid in the small-mass and soft limits of the differential partonic cross section. This provides a framework for the simultaneous resummation of soft gluon corrections and small-mass logarithms, and also an efficient means of obtaining higher-order corrections to the differential cross section in this limit. The result involves five distinct one-…
We present calculations of next-to-leading order and resummed QCD corrections for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and single-inclusive e+e- annihilation. The resummation is performed to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Knowing these QCD corrections is important in order to extract parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions from present and future data for these reactions. We present comparisons of our results to recent data by the COMPASS, HERMES, Belle, and BaBar experiments.
We present a computation of the inclusive Drell-Yan production cross-section in perturbative QCD to all orders in the limit of high partonic centre-of-mass energy. We compare our results to the fixed order NLO and NNLO results in MSbar scheme, and provide predictions at NNNLO and beyond. Our expressions may be used to obtain fully resummed results for the inclusive cross-section.
We propose and study the inclusive production of a forward $J/ψ$ and a very backward jet at the LHC as an observable to reveal high-energy resummation effects à la BFKL. Our different predictions are based on the various existing mechanisms to describe the production of the $J/ψ$, namely, NRQCD singlet and octet contributions, and the color evaporation model.
We perform a detailed study of inclusive jet production cross sections at the LHC and compare the QCD theory predictions based on the recently developed formalism for threshold and jet radius joint resummation at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy to inclusive jet data collected by the CMS collaboration at $\sqrt{S} = 7$ and $13$TeV. We compute the cross sections at next-to-leading order in QCD with and without the joint resummation for different choices of jet radii $R$ and observe that the joint resummation leads to crucial improvements in the description of the data. Comprehensive studies…
I briefly summarize some general features of soft-gluon contribution to inclusive cross-sections. The discussion includes the issue of soft-gluon singularities in infrared- and collinear-safe observables. All-order resummation and the ensuing varieties of QCD predictions are illustrated.
We present an approximate NNLO evaluation of the QCD form factor resumming large logarithmic perturbative contributions in semi-inclusive heavy flavour decays.
In the current region of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, most events are accompanied by intensive radiation of soft and collinear partons which cannot be reliably described at any fixed order of perturbative QCD. In this paper, a resummation formalism that describes such multiple parton radiation is compared to the HERA data on semi-inclusive DIS, including the distributions of energy flow and charged particle multiplicity. We show that the resummation of multiple parton radiation improves the agreement between the theory and the data. We make some suggestions on further experimental…
We discuss hadron mass corrections and threshold resummation for deep-inelastic scattering $\ell N\rightarrow\ell' X$ and semi-inclusive annihilation $e^+e^-\rightarrow h X$ processes, and provide a prescription how to consistently combine these two corrections respecting all kinematic thresholds. We find an interesting interplay between threshold resummation and target mass corrections for deep-inelastic scattering at large values of Bjorken $x_B$. In semi-inclusive annihilation, on the contrary, the two considered corrections are relevant in different kinematic regions and do not affect each…
We present a QCD study of fragmentation processes for light and heavy quarks in the semi-inclusive region of large x. Large logarithmic terms, due to soft-gluon radiation, are evaluated and resummed to all perturbative orders in the QCD coupling alpha_s. Complete analytical results to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy are given for one-particle and two-particle inclusive distributions in e+e- annihilation and DIS. Factorization of parton radiation at low transverse momenta is exploited to identify the universal (process-independent) perturbative fragmentation function that controls heavy-qu…
We resum Sudakov threshold enhancements in heavy quark hadroproduction for single-heavy quark inclusive and pair-inclusive kinematics. We expand these resummed results and derive analytical finite-order cross sections through next-to-next-to-leading order. This involves the construction of next-to-leading order matching conditions in color space. For the scale dependent terms we derive exact results using renormalization group methods. We study the effects of scale variations, scheme and kinematics choice on the partonic and hadronic cross sections, and provide estimates for top and bottom qua…
We study the effects of threshold resummation on the rapidity dependence of single-particle-inclusive cross sections, using the prompt photon cross section as an example. We make use of the full resummation formula at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and develop a new technique for treating rapidity in resummation. We compare our phenomenological results with those of previous studies and discuss differences and similarities of the two existing resummation formalisms.
We reconsider the high energy resummation of photoproduction, electroproduction and hadroproduction cross-sections, in the light of recent progress in the resummation of perturbative parton evolution to NLO in logarithms of Q^2 and x. We show in particular that the when the coupling runs the dramatic enhancements seen at fixed coupling, due to infrared singularities in the partonic cross-sections, are substantially reduced, to the extent that they are largely accounted for by the usual NLO and NNLO perturbative corrections. This leads to a novel explanation of the large K-factors commonly foun…
We present a determination of $|V_{cb}|$ from semileptonic B decays that includes resummation of supposedly large perturbative corrections, originating from the running of the strong coupling. We argue that the low value of the BLM scale found previously for inclusive decays is a manifestation of the renormalon divergence of the perturbative series starting already in third order. A reliable determination of $|V_{cb}|$ from inclusive decays is possible if one either uses a short-distance b quark mass or eliminates all unphysical mass parameters in terms of measured observables, such that all i…
We introduce a new kind of jet function: the semi-inclusive jet function $J_i(z, ω_J, μ)$, which describes how a parton $i$ is transformed into a jet with a jet radius $R$ and energy fraction $z = ω_J/ω$, with $ω_J$ and $ω$ being the large light-cone momentum component of the jet and the corresponding parton $i$ that initiates the jet, respectively. Within the framework of Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) we calculate both $J_q(z, ω_J, μ)$ and $J_g(z, ω_J, μ)$ to the next-to-leading order (NLO) for cone and anti-k$_{\rm T}$ algorithms. We demonstrate that the renormalization group (RG) e…
Studying semi-hard processes in the large center-of-mass energy limit gives us an opportunity to further test perturbative QCD in an unexplored kinematical configuration, contributing to a better understanding of the dynamics of strong interactions. For semi-hard reactions in kinematics at large center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$, the BFKL resummation of energy logarithms comes into play, since large energy logarithms compensate the smallness of QCD coupling $α_s$ and must therefore be accounted for to all perturbative orders. Tracing the path toward performing precision calculations via BFKL re…
We propose the inclusive semi-hard production, in proton-proton collisions, of two bottom-flavored hadrons, as well as of a single bottom-flavored hadron accompanied by a light jet, as novel channels for the manifestation of stabilization effects of the high-energy resummation under next-to-leading-order corrections. Our formalism relies on a hybrid high-energy and collinear factorization, where the BFKL resummation of leading and next-to-leading energy logarithms is used together with collinear factorization. We present results for cross sections and azimuthal correlations differential in rap…
Based on the nonrelativistic QCD factorization theorem, we resum QCD corrections to the inclusive decay rate of $η_c$ and $η_b$ in the large-$n_f$ limit using bubble chain resummation. By employing dimensional regularization, we show explicitly the cancellation of the infrared renormalon ambiguity in the factorization formula at leading order in $v$ in the large-$n_f$ limit, where $v$ is the typical heavy quark velocity inside the meson. We also make predictions of the ratio of the inclusive decay rate to the decay rate into two photons. By comparing our results with a fixed-order calculation …
We present calculations of cross sections and spin asymmetries in single-inclusive reactions in pp scattering. We discuss next-to-leading order predictions as well as all-order soft-gluon threshold resummations.
We present the first threshold and jet radius jointly resummed cross section for single-inclusive hadronic jet production. We work at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and our framework allows for a systematic extension beyond the currently achieved precision. Longstanding numerical issues are overcome by performing the resummation directly in momentum space within Soft Collinear Effective Theory. We present the first numerical results for the LHC and observe an improved description of the available data. Our results are of immediate relevance for LHC precision phenomenology including the e…
We study the factorization and resummation prediction on the jet mass spectrum in one-jet inclusive production at the LHC based on soft-collinear effective theory. The soft function with anti-$k_T$ algorithm is calculated at next-to-leading order and its validity is demonstrated by checking the agreement between the expanded leading singular terms with the exact fixed-order result. The large logarithms $\ln^{n} (m_J^2/p_T^2)$ and the global logarithms $\ln^{n} (s_4/p_T^2)$ in the process are resummed to all order at next-to-leading logarithmic and next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic level, res…
We study the application of the joint resummation formalism to Higgs production via gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC, defining inverse transforms by analytic continuation. We work at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We find that at low Q_T the resummed Higgs Q_T distributions are comparable in the joint and pure-Q_T formalisms, with relatively small influence from threshold enhancement in this range. We find a modest (about ten percent) decrease in the inclusive cross section, relative to pure threshold resummation.
