Low-energy neutron-${}^{19}$C scattering is studied in the three-body
$n + n + {}^{18}$C model using a realistic $nn$ potential and a number of shallow and deep $n$-${}^{18}$C potentials, the latter supporting deeply-bound Pauli-forbidden states that are projected out. Exact Faddeev-type three-body scattering equations for transition operators including two- and three-body forces are solved in the momentum-space partial-wave framework. Phase shift, inelasticity parameter, and cross sections are calculated. For the elastic $n$-${}^{19}$C scattering in the $J^Π=0^+$ partial wave the signatures of the Efimov physics, i.e., the pole in the effective-range expansion and the elastic cross section minimum, are confirmed for both shallow and deep models, but with clear quantitative differences between them, indicating the importance of a proper treatment of deeply-bound Pauli-forbidden states. In contrast, the inelasticity parameter is mostly correlated with the asymptotic normalization coefficient of the ${}^{19}$C bound state. Finally, in the regime of very weak ${}^{19}$C binding and near-threshold (bound or virtual) excited ${}^{20}$C state the standard Efimovian behaviour of the $n$-${}^{19}$C scattering length and cross section was confirmed, resolving the discrepancies between earlier studies by other authors [I. Mazumdar, A. R. P. Rau, V. S. Bhasin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 (2006) 062503; M. T. Yamashita, T. Frederico, L. Tomio, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99 (2007) 269201].
We derive the empirical formulae expressing the mass and gravitational redshift of a neutron star, whose central density is less than threefold the nuclear saturation density, as a function of the neutron-skin thickness or the dipole polarizability of $ {}^{208} \mathrm{Pb} $ or $ {}^{132} \mathrm{Sn} $, especially focusing on the 8 Skyrme-type effective interactions. The neutron star mass and its gravitational redshift can be estimated within $ \approx 10 \, \% $ errors with our formulae, while the neutron star radius is also expected within a few $\%$ errors by combining the derived formulae…
Realistic calculations of nuclear disappearance lifetimes induced by neutron-antineutron oscillations are reported for oxygen and iron, using antineutron nuclear potentials derived from a recent comprehensive analysis of antiproton atomic X-ray and radiochemical data. A lower limit of 3.3 x 10E8 s on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time is derived from the Super-Kamiokande I new lower limit of 1.77 x 10E32 yr on the neutron lifetime in oxygen. Antineutron scattering lengths in carbon and nickel, needed in trap experiments using ultracold neutrons, are calculated from updated antinucleon op…
Three-neutron resonances are investigated using realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction models. The resonance pole trajectories are explored by first adding an additional interaction to artificially bind the three-neutron system and then gradually removing it. The pole positions for the three-neutron states up to J=5/2 are localized in the third energy quadrant-Im (E)<=0, Re (E)<=0-well before the additional interaction is removed. Our study shows that realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction models exclude any possible experimental signature of three-neutron resonances.
The symmetry energy and its density dependence are crucial inputs for many nuclear physics and astrophysics applications, as they determine properties ranging from the neutron-skin thickness of nuclei to the crust thickness and the radius of neutron stars. Recently, PREX-II reported a value of $0.283 \pm 0.071$ fm for the neutron-skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb, implying a slope parameter $L = 106 \pm 37$ MeV, larger than most ranges obtained from microscopic calculations and other nuclear experiments. We use a nonparametric equation of state representation based on Gaussian processes to constrai…

In this work we studied $β$-decay properties for deformed neutron-rich nuclei in the region Z=36-43. We use the deformed pn-QRPA methods with the realistic CD-Bonn forces, and include both the Gamow-Teller and first-forbidden types of decays in the calculation. The obtained $β$-decay half-lives and neutron-emission probabilities of deformed isotopes are compared with experiment as well as with previous calculations. The advantages and disadvantages of the method are discussed.
Background: Production of neutron-rich nuclei is of vital importance to both understanding nuclear structure far from stability and to informing astrophysical models of the rapid neutron capture process (r-process). Multinucleon transfer (MNT) in heavy-ion collisions offers a possibility to produce neutron-rich nuclei far from stability. Purpose: The $^{176}\mathrm{Yb}+{}^{176}\mathrm{Yb}$ reaction has been suggested as a potential candidate to explore the neutron-rich region surrounding the principal fragments. The current study has been conducted with the goal of providing guidance for futur…
We calculate properties of neutron drops in external potentials using both quantum Monte Carlo and no-core full configuration techniques. The properties of the external wells are varied to examine different density profiles. We compare neutron drop results given by a selection of nuclear Hamiltonians, including realistic two-body interactions as well as several three-body forces. We compute a range of properties for the neutron drops: ground-state energies, spin-orbit splittings, excitation energies, radial densities and rms radii. We compare the equations of state for neutron matter for sever…
A basic prediction of the statistical model of compound nucleus reactions is that the partial widths for decay into any open channel channel fluctuate according to the Porter-Thomas distribution (PTD). A recent experiment on $s$- and $p$-wave neutron scattering from platinum isotopes found that the experimental $s$-wave partial neutron width distributions deviated substantially from the PTD. Several explanations for this finding have been proposed within the statistical model, but none has resolved this issue. Here, we review the application of a realistic resonance-reaction model to $s$-wave …

We have performed shell-model calculations for nuclei with proton particles and neutron holes around 132Sn using a realistic effective interaction derived from the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential. For the proton-neutron channel this is explicitly done in the particle-hole formalism. The calculated results are compared with the available experimental data, particular attention being focused on the proton particle-neutron hole multiplets. A very good agreement is obtained for all the four nuclei considered, 132Sb, 130Sb, 133Te and 131Sb. We predict many low-energy states which have no experime…
The structure of the particle-hole nucleus 132Sb provides a direct source of information on the effective neutron-proton interaction in the 132Sn region. We have performed a shell-model calculation for this nucleus using a realistic effective interaction derived from the Bonn A nucleon-nucleon potential. The results are in very good agreement with the experimental data evidencing the reliability of our effective interaction matrix elements both with isospin T=1 and T=0.
Based on the realistic nuclear force of the high-precision CD-Bonn potential, we have performed comprehensive calculations for neutron-rich calcium isotopes using the Gamow shell model (GSM) which includes resonance and continuum. The realistic GSM calculations produce well binding energies, one- and two-neutron separation energies, predicting that $^{57}$Ca is the heaviest bound odd isotope and $^{70}$Ca is the dripline nucleus. Resonant states are predicted, which provides useful information for future experiments on particle emissions in neutron-rich calcium isotopes. Shell evolutions in th…
We have studied neutron-rich calcium isotopes in terms of the shell model employing a realistic effective interaction derived from the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential. The short-range repulsion of the potential is renormalized by way of the V-low-k approach. The calculated results are in very good agreement with the available experimental data, thus supporting our predictions for the hitherto unknown spectra of 53-56Ca nuclei. In this context, the possible existence of an N=34 shell closure is discussed.
In the framework of Thomas-Fermi approximation, we study systematically the EOSs and microscopic structures of neutron star matter in a vast density range with $n_\mathrm{b}\approx 10^{-10}$-2 $\mathrm{fm}^{-3}$, where various covariant density functionals are adopted, i.e., those with nonlinear self couplings (NL3, PK1, TM1, GM1, MTVTC) and density-dependent couplings (DD-LZ1, DDME-X, PKDD, DD-ME2, DD2, TW99). It is found that the EOSs generally coincide with each other at $n_\mathrm{b}\lesssim 10^{-4}$ fm${}^{-3}$ and 0.1 fm${}^{-3}\lesssim n_\mathrm{b} \lesssim 0.3$ fm${}^{-3}$, while in ot…
The properties of neutron star are studied in the framework of relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) model with realistic nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interactions, i.e. Bonn potentials. The strong repulsion of $NN$ interaction at short range is properly removed by the unitary correlation operator method (UCOM). Meanwhile, the tensor correlation is neglected due to the very rich neutron environment in neutron star, where the total isospin of two nucleons can be approximately regarded as $T=1$. The equations of state of neutron star matter are calculated in $β$ equilibrium and charge neutrality conditions.…
We infer the mass distribution of neutron stars in binary systems using a flexible Gaussian mixture model and use Bayesian model selection to explore evidence for multi-modality and a sharp cut-off in the mass distribution. We find overwhelming evidence for a bimodal distribution, in agreement with previous literature, and report for the first time positive evidence for a sharp cut-off at a maximum neutron star mass. We measure the maximum mass to be $2.0M_\odot < m_\mathrm{max} < 2.2M_\odot$ (68\%), $2.0M_\odot < m_\mathrm{max}< 2.6M_\odot$ (90\%), and evidence for a cut-off is robust against…
Observations of neutron stars, whether in binaries or in isolation, provide information about the internal structure of the most extreme material objects in the Universe. In this work, we combine information from recent observations to place joint constraints on the properties of neutron star matter. We use (i) lower limits on the maximum mass of neutron stars obtained through radio observations of heavy pulsars, (ii) constraints on tidal properties inferred through the gravitational waves neutron star binaries emit as they coalesce, and (iii) information about neutron stars' masses and radii …
Charge-changing cross sections $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ for $^{42\textrm{--}51}$Ca on a carbon target at around 280~MeV/nucleon have been measured. The measured $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ values differ significantly from the previously developed calculations based on the Glauber model. However, through introduction of the charged-particle evaporation effect induced by the neutron-removal reaction in addition to the Glauber-model calculation, experimental $σ_\mathrm{CC}$ values on $^{12}$C at around 300~MeV/nucleon for nuclides from C to Fe isotopes are all reproduced with approximately 1\% accuracy. This proposed…
Shell structure in the neutron-rich Ca and Ni nuclei is investigated by the spherical Hartree-Fock calculations with the semi-realistic $NN$ interactions. Specific ingredients of the effective interaction, particularly the tensor force, often play a key role in the $Z$ dependence of the neutron shell structure. Such examples are found in N=32 and N=40; N=32 becomes magic or submagic in $^{52}$Ca while its magicity is broken in $^{60}$Ni, and N=40 is submagic (though not magic) in $^{68}$Ni but not in $^{60}$Ca. Comments are given on the doubly magic nature of $^{78}$Ni. We point out that the l…
The problem of the magnitude of the S--factor of the hep process $p + {^3\mathrm{He}} \to {^4\mathrm{He}} + e^+ + ν_e$ is one of the most important unsolved problems in nuclear astrophysics. The magnitude of $S(hep)$ has also an important impact on the interpretation of the Super-Kamiokande solar neutrino results in terms of neutrino oscillations. We point out the possiblity to determine the major hadronic contribution to $S(hep)$ from the measurement of the total cross section of the process $n + {^3\mathrm{H}} \to {^4\mathrm{He}} + e^- + \barν_e$ in experiments with high intensity beams of t…
A semi-microscopic self-consistent quantum approach developed recently to describe the inner crust structure of neutron stars within the Wigner-Seitz (WS) method with the explicit inclusion of neutron and proton pairing correlations is further developed. In this approach, the generalized energy functional is used which contains the anomalous term describing the pairing. It is constructed by matching the realistic phenomenological functional by Fayans et al. for describing the nuclear-type cluster in the center of the WS cell with the one calculated microscopically for neutron matter. Previousl…
A recent experiment on s-wave neutron scattering from $^{192,194,196}$Pt found that the reduced neutron width distributions deviate significantly from the expected Porter-Thomas distribution (PTD), and several explanations have been proposed within the statistical model of compound nucleus reactions. Here, we study the statistics of reduced neutron widths in the reaction $n+ ^{194}$Pt within a model that combines the standard statistical model with a realistic treatment of the neutron channel. We find that, if the correct secular energy dependence of the average neutron widths is used, then th…
We present the equation of state of infinite neutron matter as obtained from highly-realistic Hamiltonians that include nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon coordinate-space potentials. We benchmark three independent many-body methods: Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone (BBG), Fermi hypernetted chain/single-operator chain (FHNC/SOC), and auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC). We find them to provide similar equations of state when the Argonne $v_{18}$ and the Argonne $v_{6}^\prime$ nucleon-nucleon potentials are used in combination with the Urbana IX three-body force. Only at densities larger than…
New parameter-sets of the semi-realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction are developed, by modifying the M3Y interaction but maintaining the tensor channels and the longest-range central channels. The modification is made so as to reproduce microscopic results of neutron-matter energies, in addition to the measured binding energies of doubly magic nuclei including $^{100}$Sn and the even-odd mass differences of the Z=50 and N=82 nuclei in the self-consistent mean-field calculations. Separation energies of the proton- or neutron-magic nuclei are shown to be in fair agreement with the experimental d…
The odd-odd nucleus 210Bi is studied within the framework of the shell model using effective two-body matrix elements derived from the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential. The experimental energies of the proton-neutron multiplet ph9/2 ng9/2 are remarkably well reproduced by the theory, which accounts for the 1- state being the ground state instead of the 0- predicted by the Nordheim strong coupling rule. It is shown that the core-polarization effects are crucial to produce this inversion. The similarity between neutron-proton multiplets in the 132Sn and 208Pb regions is discussed in connection …
We study the neutron-rich calcium isotopes performing shell-model calculations with a realistic effective interaction. This is derived from the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential renormalized by way of the V-low-k approach, considering 48Ca as an inert core and including the neutron 0g9/2 orbital. We compare our results with experiment and with the results of a previous study where 40Ca was assumed as a closed core and the standard 1p0f model space was employed. The calculated spectroscopic properties are in both cases in very good agreement with the available experimental data and enable a dis…
We investigate the constraints on the mass and radius of neutron stars by considering the tidal deformability in the merge of neutron star binaries. In order to extract the most reliable range of uncertainty from theory, we employ models based upon the Skyrme force and density functional theory and select models that are consistent with empirical data of finite nuclei, measured properties of nuclear matter around the saturation density, and observation of the maximum mass of neutron stars. From the selected models, we calculate the Love number $k_2$, dimensionless tidal deformability $Λ$, and …
Mechanisms of spin-flavor SU(6) symmetry breaking in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) are studied via an extraction of the free neutron structure function from a global analysis of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data on the proton and on nuclei from $A = 2$ (deuterium) to 208 (lead). Modification of the structure function of nucleons bound in atomic nuclei (known as the EMC effect) are consistently accounted for within the framework of a universal modification of nucleons in short-range correlated (SRC) pairs. Our extracted neutron-to-proton structure function ratio $F_2^n/F_2^p$ becomes constant…
We calculate the low-lying spectra of the zirconium isotopes Z=40 with neutron numbers from N=52 to N=60 using the 1p1/20g9/2 proton and 2s1d0g7/20h11/2 neutron sub-shells to define the model space. Effective proton-proton, neutron--neutron and proton-neutron interactions have been derived using 88Sr as closed core and employing perturbative many-body techniques. The starting point is the nucleon-nucleon potential derived from modern meson exchange models. The comprehensive shell-model calculation performed in this work provides a qualitative reproduction of essential properties such as the su…
The mean free path of neutrino in charged and neutral current reactions is calculated for inhomogeneous nuclear matter which is expected to appear in the crust of neutron stars. The relevant cross section depends on Fermi and Gamow-Teller strength distributions, which are derived from the large-scale shell model calculations within the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach and in a relativistic mean-field model. The inhomogeneous nuclear matter is described in terms of cubic Wigner-Seitz cells, which allows for a microscopic description of the structures in the so-called pasta phase of …
Whether fast cooling processes occur or not is crucial for the thermal evolution of neutron stars. In particular, the threshold of the direct Urca process, which is one of the fast cooling processes, is determined by the interior proton fraction $Y_p$, or the nuclear symmetry energy. Since recent observations indicate the small radius of neutron stars, a low value is preferred for the symmetry energy. In this study, simulations of neutron star cooling are performed adopting three models for equation of state (EoS): Togashi, Shen, and LS220 EoSs. The Togashi EoS has been recently constructed wi…
The Hauser-Feshbach statistical model is applied to the de-excitation of primary fission fragments using input mass yields calculated with macroscopic-microscopic models of the potential energy surface. We test the sensitivity of the prompt fission observables to the input mass yields for two important reactions, $^{235}$U$(n_\mathrm{th},f)$ and $^{239}$Pu$(n_\mathrm{th},f)$, for which good experimental data exist. General traits of the mass yields, such as the location of the peaks and their widths, can impact both the prompt neutron and $γ$-ray multiplicities, as well as their spectra. Speci…
The calculation of transport properties of Fermi liquids, based on the formalism developed by Abrikosov and Khalatnikov, requires the knowledge of the probability of collisions between quasiparticles in the vicinity of the Fermi surface. We have carried out a numerical study of the shear viscosity of pure neutron matter, whose value plays a pivotal role in determining the stability of rotating neutron stars, in which these processes are described using a state-of-the-art nucleon-nucleon potential model. Within our approach medium modifications of the scattering cross section are consistently t…
Polarization observables in neutron-deuteron scattering are calculated to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order ($\mathrm{N}^{3}\mathrm{LO}$) in pionless effective field theory ($\mathrm{EFT}_{\notπ}$). At $\mathrm{N}^{3}\mathrm{LO}$ the two-body $P$-wave contact interactions are found to be important contributions to the neutron vector analyzing power, $A_{y}(θ)$, and the deuteron vector analyzing power, $iT_{11}(θ)$. Extracting the two-body $P$-wave $\mathrm{EFT}_{\notπ}$ coefficients from two-body scattering data and varying them within the expected $\mathrm{EFT}_{\notπ}$ theoretical errors…
It has been shown recently that a neutron placed in an external quasistatic electric field develops an induced electric dipole moment $\mathbf{p}_{\mathrm{IND}}$ due to quantum fluctuations in the QED vacuum. A feasible experiment which could detect such an effect is proposed and described here. It is shown that the peculiar angular dependence of $\mathbf{p}_{\mathrm{IND}}$ on the orientation of the neutron spin leads to a characteristic asymmetry in polarized neutron scattering by heavy nuclei. This asymmetry can be of the order of $10^{-3}$ for neutrons with epithermal energies. For thermali…
The total neutron-Nucleus cross section has been calculated within an approach which takes into account nucleon-nucleon correlations, Glauber multiple scattering and inelastic shadowing corrections. Nuclear targets ranging from 4He to 208Pb and neutron incident momentum ranging from 3 to 300 GeV/c, have been considered. Correlations have been introduced by two different approaches leading to the same results. The commonly used approximation, consisting in treating nuclear effects only by a product of one-body densities, is carefully analyzed and it is shown that the effects of realistic correl…
The relativistic mean field approach by distinguishing \com{the slope of symmetry energy} is implemented into the Lanzhou quantum molecular dynamics transport model (LQMD.RMF). The collective flows in the isotopic nuclear reactions are systematically investigated by the relativistic quantum molecular dynamics model \com{with various slopes of symmetry energy}. The structure of the directed and elliptic flows is consistent with the results of the nonrelativistic transportation of nucleon system. \com{The directed flow difference between free neutrons and protons appears in the midrapidity regio…
We derive indirect limits on the charm and bottom quark electric dipole moments (EDMs) from paramagnetic AMO and neutron EDM experiments. The charm and bottom quark EDMs generate $CP$-odd photon-gluon operators and light quark EDMs at the $c$- and $b$-quark mass thresholds. These $CP$-odd operators induce the $CP$-odd semi-leptonic operator $C_S$ and the neutron EDM below the QCD scale that are probed by the paramagnetic and neutron EDM experiments, respectively. The bound from $C_S$ is $\vert d_c \vert < 1.3\times 10^{-20}\,e\,\mathrm{cm}$ for the charm quark and $\vert d_b \vert < 7.6\times …
We report benchmark calculations of the energy per particle of pure neutron matter as a function of the baryon density using three independent many-body methods: Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone, Fermi hypernetted chain/single-operator chain, and auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo. Significant technical improvements are implemented in the latter two methods. The calculations are made for two distinct families of realistic coordinate-space nucleon-nucleon potentials fit to scattering data, including the standard Argonne $v_{18}$ interaction and two of its simplified versions, and four of the new No…
We investigate the adiabatic index $Γ_{\mathrm{th}}$ of hot and dense nuclear matter from chiral effective field theory and find that the results are systematically larger than from typical mean field models. We start by constructing the finite-temperature equation of state from chiral two- and three-nucleon forces, which we then use to fit a class of extended Skyrme energy density functionals. This allows for modeling the thermal index across the full range of densities and temperatures that may be probed in simulations of core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers, including the low-d…
We infer the collapse times of long-lived neutron stars into black holes using the X-ray afterglows of 18 short gamma-ray bursts. We then apply hierarchical inference to infer properties of the neutron star equation of state and dominant spin-down mechanism. We measure the maximum non-rotating neutron star mass $M_\mathrm{TOV} = 2.31 ^{+0.36}_{-0.21} M_{\odot}$ and constrain the fraction of remnants spinning down predominantly through gravitational-wave emission to $η= 0.69 ^{+0.21}_{-0.39}$ with $68 \%$ uncertainties. In principle, this method can determine the difference between hadronic and…
The properties of neutron stars are investigated within the relativistic central variational method by using a realistic nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interaction. The strong repulsion of realistic $NN$ interactions at short distances is treated by a Jastrow central correlation function, whose form is completely determined through minimization of the total energy of the nuclear many-body system. The relativistic Hartree-Fock wave functions are chosen as the trial wave function. In this framework, the equation of state of the neutron star matter in $β$ equilibrium is obtained self-consistently. We fur…
We study the $^{11}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{22}\mathrm{C}$ nuclei at leading order (LO) in halo effective field theory (Halo EFT). Using the value of the $^{22}\mathrm{C}$ rms matter radius deduced in Ref. [1] as an input in a LO calculation, we simultaneously constrained the values of the two-neutron (2$n$) separation energy of $^{22}\mathrm{C}$ and the virtual-state energy of the $^{20}\mathrm{C}-$neutron system (hereafter denoted $^{21}$C). The 1$-σ$ uncertainty of the input rms matter radius datum, along with the theory error estimated from the anticipated size of the higher-order terms in the …
