In this paper, the first complete photometric light curves in the B, V, and R passbands for an eclipsing binary LO Com are presented, and the photometric solution for the LO Com is derived by analyzing these light curves by using the Wilson and Devinney code. From the photometric solution, it is found that the LO Com is a W-type W UMa binary with a mass ratio of q={m}2/{m}1=2.478 and a contact degree of f=(3.2+/- 0.25) % . By combining the two new minimum times with those published earlier in the literature, we have found that the (O - C) curve shows a downward parabolic variation corresponding to a long-term decrease in the orbital period with a rate of {d}P/{d}t=-1.18*{10}-7 days yr-1. This long-term decrease in its orbital period may be caused by mass transfer from the more massive component to the less massive one.
We present CCD photometric observations of the W UMa type contact binary EK Comae Berenices using the 2 metre telescope of $IUCAA$ Girawali Observatory, India. The star was classified as a W UMa type binary of subtype-W by \citet{sam1996}. The new V band photometric observations of the star reveal that shape of the light curve has changed significantly from the one observed by \citet{sam1996}. A detailed analysis of the light curve obtained from the high-precision CCD photometric observations of the star indicates that EK Comae Berenices is not a W-type but an A-type totally eclipsing W UMa co…
Aims. We analyze new multicolor light curves and recently published radial velocity curves for close binaries QX And, RW Com, MR Del, and BD +07{\circ} 3142 to determine the physical parameters of the components. Methods. The light curves are analyzed using a binary star model based on Roche geometry to fit the photometric observations. Spectroscopic parameters, such as the mass ratios and spectral types, were taken from recent spectroscopic studies of the systems in question. Results. Our findings provide consistent and reliable sets of stellar parameters for the four studied binary systems. …
The magnetic chemically peculiar (Ap/CP2) star 21 Com has been extensively studied in the past, albeit with widely differing and sometimes contradictory results, in particular concerning the occurrence of short term variability between about 5 to 90 minutes. We have performed a new investigation of 21 Com using MOST satellite and high-cadence ground-based photometry, time series spectroscopy, and evolutionary and pulsational modeling. Our analysis confirms that 21 Com is a classical CP2 star showing increased abundances of, in particular, Cr and Sr. From spectroscopic analysis, we have derived…
On the AGB, low to intermediate mass stars blow away their outer envelopes, forming planetary nebulae. Interaction between the planetary nebula and its central progenitor is poorly understood and even more complex when the central object is a binary star with a magnetically active component, like it is the case for IN Com. We aim to quantify the surface activity of the cool binary component of IN Com and aim to explain its origin. We need a better understanding of how central binary stars in planetary nebulae evolve and how this evolution could develop such magnetically active stars like IN Co…
New multi-color light curves of the very short period K-type eclipsing binary V1799 Ori were obtained and analyzed with the W-D code. The photometric solutions reveal that the system is a W-type shallow-contact binary with a mass ratio of $q=1.335(\pm0.005)$ and a degree of contact about $f = 3.5(\pm1.1)\%$. In general, the results are in good agreement with which is reported by Samec. The remarkable O'Connell effects in the light curves are well explained by employing star spots on the binary surface, which confirms that the system is active at present. Several new times of light minimum were…
We present photometric maps based on data from the shallow survey in the Large Magellanic Cloud performed as the supplementary project during the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. They cover about 40 square degrees in the LMC and contain mean calibrated VI photometry and astrometry of about 1.7 million stars. The magnitudes of the registered objects range from 9.1 to 18.5. We discuss the quality of data and present color--magnitude diagrams of selected fields. The maps together with the main LMC photometric maps are available to the astronomical community from the OG…
The first charge-coupled device photometric light curves in B, V, R${_c}$, and I${_c}$ bands of the short-period contact binary star OQ Cam are presented. Through analyzing the light curves with the Wilson-Devinney code, it is found that OQ Cam is a W-type shallow contact binary star with a contact degree of f =20.2%. Based on the O-C analyzing, the orbit period displays a long term increasing with a rate of $dP/dt=4.40\times10{^{-7}} day \cdot year{^{-1}}$. The increasing in orbit period can be interpreted by mass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive one. As the orbit …
In this paper, CCD photometric light curves for the short-period eclipsing binary 1SWASP J140533.33+114639.1 (hereafter J1405) in the $BVR$ bands are presented and analyzed using the 2013 version of the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) code. It is discovered that the J1405 is a W-subtype shallow contact binary with a contact degree of $f$ = 7.9$\pm$ 0.5\% and a mass ratio of $q$ = 1.55 $\pm$ 0.02. In order to explain the asymmetric light curves of the system, a cool star-spot on the more massive component was employed. This shallow contact eclipsing binary may be formed from a short-period detached syste…
We report photometric and spectroscopic observations of the 2014 eclipse of EE Cep. This proved to be one of the shallower eclipses on record rather than one of the deepest as predicted. The general shape of the eclipse light curve was similar to that of the 2003 eclipse. The spectral type before and after eclipse was consistent with B5III and became slightly later at mid-eclipse. Total flux in the Hα emission line remained relatively constant through the eclipse.
We present a statistical method for the photometric search of rare astronomical sources based on the weighted k-NN method. A metric is defined in a multi-dimensional color-magnitude space based only on the photometric properties of template sources and the photometric uncertainties of both templates and data, without the need to define ad-hoc color and magnitude cuts which could bias the search. The metric is defined as a function of two parameters, the number of neighbors k and a threshold distance D_th that can be optimized for maximum selection efficiency and completeness. We apply the meth…
V0842 Cep is a W UMa-type binary star that has been neglected since its discovery. We analysed the VR$_c$I$_c$ light curves, obtained by the 1 m telescope at the Weihai Observatory of Shandong University, using the Wilson-Devinney code. V0842 Cep was found to be a shallow contact binary system (f=8.7$\%$) with a mass ratio of 2.281. Because its orbital inclination is greater than 80$^\circ$, the photometric results are reliable. A period study is included which reveals a continually decreasing orbital period ($\frac{\mathrm{d}p}{\mathrm{d}t}$=1.50($\pm$0.42)$\times$10$^{-7}$dyr$^{-1}$). This t…
We report time-resolved photometry of the cataclysmic variable V849 Her, and measure a period of 0.1414 \pm 0.0030 days (3.394 \pm 0.072 hours). We also present photometry taken over several weeks in 2010 and 2011, as well as light curves from 1995 to 2011 by the American Association of Variable Star Observers. The spectra, absolute magnitude derived from infrared magnitudes, and variability all suggest that V849 Her is a nova-like variable. The shallow (0.5-magnitude) low states we observe resemble the erratic low states of the VY Sculptoris stars, although they may recur quasi-periodically o…
In this study, all unpublished time series photometric data of BM UMa ($q \sim$ 2.0, P = 0.2712\,d) from available archives were re-investigated together with new data taken from the TNT-2.4m of the Thai National Observatory (TNO). Based on period analysis, there is a short-term variation superimposed on the long-term period decrease. The trend of period change can be fitted with a downward parabolic curve indicating a period decrease at a rate of $\mathrm{d}P/\mathrm{d}t = -3.36(\pm 0.02)\times10^{-8}$ d $\textrm{yr}^{-1}$. This long-term period decrease can be explained by mass transfer from…
We obtained complete $R$ and $I$ light curves of GSC 02393-00680 in 2008 and analyzed them with the 2003 version of the W-D code. It is shown that GSC 02393-00680 is a W-type shallow contact binary system with a high mass ratio $q=1.600$ and a degree of contact factor $f=5.0%(\pm1.3%)$. It will be a good example to check up on the TRO theory. A period investigation based on all available data suggests that the system has a small-amplitude period oscillation ($A_3=0.^{d}0030$; $T_3=1.92$years). This may indicate it has a moderate mass close third body, which is similar to XY Leo.
The $B$ $V$ $R_c$ $I_c$ bands light curves of the newly discovered binary system \astrobj{GSC 03122-02426} are obtained and analyzed using the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) code. The solutions suggest that the mass ratio of the binary system is $q = 2.70$ and the less massive component is $422K$ hotter than the more massive one. We conclude that \astrobj{GSC 03122-02426} is a W-subtype shallow contact (with a contact degree of $f = 15.3\,\%$) binary system. It may be a newly formed contact binary system which is just under geometrical contact and will evolve to be a thermal contact binary system. The …
We performed photometric and spectroscopic investigations of NSVS 5029961 for the first time. The new BV(RI)$_c$-band light curves were obtained with the 1.0-m telescope at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University. Applying the Wilson-Devinney program, we found that NSVS 5029961 is an A-subtype shallow contact binary with extremely low mass ratio (q = 0.1515, f = 19.1\%). Six spectra have been obtained by LAMOST, and many chromospheric activity emission line indicators were detected in the spectra, revealing that the target exhibits strong chromospheric activity. We calculated the absolute pa…
We present new, high-quality multicolor observations of four recently discovered contact binaries: 1SWASP J064501.21+342154.9, 1SWASP J155822.10-025604.8, 1SWASP J212808.86+151622.0, and UCAC4 436-062932, and analyze their light curves to determine orbital and physical parameters using the modeling program of G. Djurašević. In the absence of spectroscopic observations, the effective temperatures of the brighter components are estimated from the color indices, and the mass ratios are determined with the q-search method. The analysis shows that all four systems are W UMa type binaries in shallow…
By analyzing two sets of complete $BVR_cI_c$ light curves of V342 UMa and three sets of complete $BVR_cI_c$ light curves of V509 Cam, we determined that the two systems are both W-subtype contact binaries and that V342 UMa shows a shallow contact configuration, while V509 Cam exhibits a medium contact configuration. Since both of them are totally eclipsing binaries, the physical parameters derived only by the photometric light curves are reliable.Meanwhile, the period changes of the two targets were analyzed based on all available eclipsing times. We discovered that V342 UMa shows long-term pe…
Two sets of light curves in $V$ $R_c$ $I_c$ bands for a newly discovered binary system UCAC4 436-062932 are obtained and analyzed using the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) code. The two sets of light curves get almost consistent results. The determined mass ratio is about $q = 2.7$ and the less massive component is nearly $250K$ hotter than the more massive one. The solutions conclude that UCAC4 436-062932 is a W-subtype shallow contact (with a contact degree of $f = 20\,\%$) binary system. Since the O'Connell effect appears on one set of the light curves, theories proposed to explain the effect are dis…
GU Ori was observed with the 1m telescope at Yunnan Observatories in 2005. To determine its physical properties, the Wilson-Devinney program is used. The results reveal that GU Ori is a W-subtype shallow contact binary with a more massive but cooler star 2. The mass of its two component stars are estimated to be $M_1 = 0.45M_\odot$, $M_2 = 1.05M_\odot$. The O'Connell effect was reported to be negative on the light curves observed in 2005. However, it changed to a positive one on the light curves observed from 2011 to 2012. The mean surface temperatures of star 2 ($T_2$) determined by the two s…
We carried out high-precision photometric observations of three eclipsing ultrashortperiod contact binaries (USPCBs). Theoretical models were fitted to the light-curves by means of the Wilson-Devinney code. The solutions suggest that the three targets have evolved to a contact phase. The photometric results are as follows: a) 1SWASP J030749.87-365201.7, q=0.439\pm0.003, f=0.0\pm3.6%; b) 1SWASP J213252.93-441822.6, q=0.560\pm0.003, f=14.2\pm1.9%; c) 1SWASP J200059.78+054408.9, q=0.436\pm0.008, f=58.4\pm1.8%. The light curves show O'Connell effects, which can be modeled by assumed cool spots. Th…
New light curves and photometric solutions of FP Lyn, FV CVn and V354 UMa are presented. It is found that these three systems are W-subtype shallow contact binaries. In addition, it is obvious that the light curves of FP Lyn and V354 UMa are asymmetric. Therefore, a hot spot was added on the primary star of FP Lyn and a dark spot was added on the secondary star of V354 UMa. At the same time, we added a third light to the photometric solution of FP Lyn for the final result. The obtained mass ratios and fill-out factors are $q=1.153$ and $f=13.4\%$ for FP Lyn, $q=1.075$ and $f=4.6\%$ for FV CVn,…
The photometric and spectroscopic investigations of ten contact binaries were presented for the first time. It is discovered that the mass ratios of all the ten targets are smaller than 0.15, they are extremely low mass ratio contact binaries. Seven of them are deep contact binaries, two are medium contact binaries, while only one is a shallow contact system. Five of them show O'Connell effect, and a dark spot on one of the two components can lead to a good fit of the asymmetric light curves. The orbital period studies of the ten binaries reveal that they all exhibit long-term period changes, …
A photometric and spectroscopic investigation is performed on five W Ursae Majoris eclipsing binaries (EWs) J015818.6+260247 (hereinafter as J0158b), J073248.4+405538 (hereinafter as J0732), J101330.8+494846 (hereinafter as J1013), J132439.8+130747 (hereinafter as J1324) and J152450.7+245943 (hereinafter as J1524). The photometric data are collected with the help of the 1.3\,m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope (DFOT), the 1.04\,m Sampurnanand Telescope (ST) and the TESS space mission. The low-resolution spectra of the 4\,m Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) are u…
Comprehensive photometric investigation was carried out to the early K-type contact binary - IL Cnc. A few light curves from both ground-based telescopes and the Kepler space telescope were obtained (or downloaded) and then analyzed in detail. They are mostly found to be asymmetric and there are even continuously changing O'Connell effect in the light curves from Kepler K2 data, suggesting the system to be highly active. Using the Wilson-Devinney code (version 2013), photometric solutions were derived and then compared. It is found that the calculation of the mass ratio is easily affected by t…
We present the results of our study of the eclipsing binary systems CSS J112237.1+395219, LINEAR 1286561 and LINEAR 2602707 based on new CCD $B$, $V$, $R_c$ and $I_c$ complete light curves. The ultra-short period nature of the stars \citep{Drake2014} is confirmed and the system's periods are revised. The light curves were modelled using the 2005 version of the Wilson-Devinney code. When necessary, cool spots on the surface of the primary component were introduced to account for asymmetries in the light curves. As a result, we found that CSS J112237.1+395219 is a W UMa type contact binary syste…
New CCD photometric light curves of short period (P=0.285d) eclipsing binary RW Dor are presented. The observations performed with the PROMPT-8 robotic telescope at CTIO in Chile from March 2015 to March 2017. The other eclipse timings were obtained from the 2.15-m JS telescope at CASLEO, San Juan, Argentina in December 2011. By light-curve analysis, it is found that RW Dor is a W-type shallow contact binary with a fill-out factor $f \sim 11\%$ and high mass ratio $q \sim 1.587$ (1/q = 0.63), where the hotter component is the less massive one ($M_1 \sim 0.52M_{\odot}$ and $M_2 \sim 0.82M_{\odo…
The multi-color passband CCD light curves of ASAS J124343+1531.7 and LINEAR 2323566 were first obtained by the 0.84-m Ritchey-Chrétien telescope with follow up observations by the WIYN 0.90m Cassegrain telescope. The data from the $Transiting\quad Exoplanet\quad Survey\quad Satellite\quad (TESS)$ of ASAS J124343+1531.7 was also applied for subsequent analysis. By analyzing the data through the W-D program, their mass ratios and fill-out factors were determined as 3.758, 1.438 and 31.8$\%$, 14.9$\%$, respectively. ASAS J124343+1531.7 is a W-subtype median contact binary, while LINEAR 2323566 is…
We present optical photometric and polarimetric observations of stars towards NGC 1931 with the aim to derive the cluster parameters such as distance, reddening, age and luminosity/mass function as well as to understand the dust properties and star formation in the region. The distance to the cluster is found to be 2.3$\pm$0.3 kpc and the reddening E(B-V) in the region is found to be variable. The stellar density contours reveal two clustering in the region. The observations suggest differing reddening law within the cluster region. Polarization efficiency of the dust grains towards the direct…
The period distribution of contact binaries exhibits a very sharp short period cut-off at 0.22 days. In order to provide valuable information on this short period limit, we observed ten totally eclipsing contact binaries with orbital periods near this cut-off. By detailed analysis using W-D code, we determined that two of these systems are A-subtype contact binaries while the others are W-subtype contact binaries and all the targets show shallow contact configurations. Half of the targets exhibit stellar spot activity and four of them have third light. A statistical work on well studied USPCBs…
Multi-color light curves of V1197 Her were obtained with the 2.4 meter optical telescope at Thai National Observatory and the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) program is used to model the observational light curves. The photometric solutions reveal that V1197 Her is a W-subtype shallow contact binary system with a mass ratio of $q = 2.61 $ and fill-out factor to be $f = 15.7\,\%$. The temperature difference between the primary star and secondary star is only $140K$ in spite of the low degree of contact, which means that V1197 Her is not only in geometrical contact configuration but also already under the…

We have performed an optical spectroscopic and photometric search for young stellar objects associated with the molecular cloud Lynds 1340, and examined the structure of the cloud by constructing an extinction map, based on SDSS data. The new extinction map suggests a shallow, strongly fragmented cloud, having a mass of some 3700~Msun. Longslit spectroscopic observations of the brightest stars over the area of L1340 revealed that the most massive star associated with L1340 is a B4 type, about 5 solar mass star. The new spectroscopic and photometric data of the intermediate mass members led to …
New APT photometric observations of HD 97658 by Henry during the current 2012 observing season have failed to confirm the shallow transits of HD 97658b reported below. Additional observations are required to confirm or exclude transits of HD 97658b. We present evidence for photometric transits of the low-mass planet HD 97658b across the disk of its host star, an early K dwarf. This planet was previously discovered in radial velocities (RVs) from Keck/HIRES as part of the Eta-Earth Survey. Using photometry from the Automated Photometric Telescopes at Fairborn Observatory, we detected four separ…
We report the identification of a new, long period detached eclipsing binary by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). Combining V-band photometry from ASAS-SN, ASAS and KELT, we constructed a light curve spanning 2006-2018. ASASSN-V J192543.72+402619.0 is an eccentric detached eclipsing binary with an orbital period of $P\sim7.3$ yr, a minimum orbital eccentricity of $e_{min}\sim0.2$ and a primary eclipse lasting $\sim160$ d. We also detect a secondary eclipse that is $\sim 0.6$ mag shallower. Multi-band photometry suggests that the more luminous component of the binary is an …
Results of analysis of 60010 data photometric observations from the AAVSO international database are presented, which span 120 years of monitoring. The periodogram analysis shows the best fit period of 70.74d, a half of typically published periods for smaller intervals. Contrary to expectation for deep/shallow minima, the changes between them are not so regular. There may be series of deep (or shallow) minima without alternations. There may be two acting periods of 138.5 days and 70.74, so the beat modulation may be expected. The dependence of the phases of deep minima argue for two alternatin…
YZ Phe is a very short-period contact binary (Sp.= $K2\,V$) with an orbital period of 0.2347 days near the short period limit (0.22 d). We present the complete light curves in $VRI$ bands, which photometric data were obtained with the 0.61-m telescope of PROMPT-8 at CTIO in Chile during June to October 2016 and August 2017. The photometric solutions were determined by using the W-D method and the results reveal that YZ Phe is a W-subtype shallow contact binary ($f\sim$ 10%, $q$ = 2.635 or $1/q$ = 0.379 for W subtype) with rotational motion of a large hot spot on the more massive component, sho…
We announce the identification of a new cataclysmic variable star in the field of the Kepler Mission, KIC J192410.81+445934.9. This system was identified during a search for compact pulsators in the Kepler field. High-speed photometry reveals coherent large-amplitude variability with a period of 2.94 h. Rapid, large-amplitude quasi-periodic variations are also detected on time scales of ~1200 s and ~650 s. Time-resolved spectroscopy covering one half photometric period shows shallow, broad Balmer and He I absorption lines with bright emission cores as well as strong He II and Bowen blend emiss…
Westerlund 1 is a young, massive Galactic starburst cluster that contains a rich coeval population of Wolf-Rayet stars, hot- and cool-phase transitional supergiants, and a magnetar. We use spectroscopic and photometric observations of the eclipsing double-lined binary W13 to derive dynamical masses for the two components, in order to determine limits for the progenitor masses of the magnetar CXOU J164710.2-455216 and the population of evolved stars in Wd1. W13 has an orbital period of 9.2709+/-0.0015 days and near-contact configuration. The shallow photometric eclipse rules out an inclination …
The first BV bands photometric observations and the low-resolution spectrum of the shortest period Am type eclipsing binary TYC 6408-989-1 have been obtained. The stellar atmospheric parameters of the primary star were obtained through the spectral fitting as follows: $T_{eff}=6990\pm117 K$, $\log g=4.25\pm0.26 cm/s^2$, $[Fe/H]=-0.45\pm0.03 dex$. The original spectra obtained by European Southern Observatory (ESO) were processed with IRAF package by us. Based on the ESO blue-violet spectra, TYC 6408-989-1 was concluded as a marginal Am (Am:) star with a spectral type of kA3hF1mA5 IV-V identifi…
