We study the topological dynamics of the horocycle flow $h_\mathbb{R}$ on a geometrically infinite hyperbolic surface S. Let u be a non-periodic vector for $h_\mathbb{R}$ in T^1 S. Suppose that the half-geodesic $u(\mathbb{R}^+)$ is almost minimizing and that the injectivity radius along $u(\mathbb{R}^+)$ has a finite inferior limit $Inj(u(\mathbb{R}^+))$. We prove that the closure of $h_\mathbb{R} u$ meets the geodesic orbit along un unbounded sequence of points $g_{t_n} u$. Moreover, if $Inj(u(\mathbb{R}^+)) = 0$, the whole half-orbit $g_{\mathbb{R}^+} u$ is contained in $h_\mathbb{R} u$. When $Inj(u(\mathbb{R}^+)) > 0$, it is known that in general $g_{\mathbb{R}^+} u \subset h_\mathbb{R} u$. Yet, we give a construction where $Inj(u(\mathbb{R}^+)) > 0$ and $g_{\mathbb{R}^+} u \subset h_\mathbb{R} u$, which also constitutes a counterexample to Proposition 3 of [Led97].
We study the problem of rigidity of closures of totally geodesic plane immersions in geometrically finite manifolds containing rank $1$ cusps. We show that the key notion of K-thick recurrence of horocycles fails generically in this setting. This property was introduced in the recent work of McMullen, Mohammadi and Oh. Nonetheless, in the setting of geometrically finite groups whose limit sets are circle packings, we derive 2 density criteria for non-closed geodesic plane immersions, and show that closed immersions give rise to surfaces with finitely generated fundamental groups. We also obtai…
Let $M$ be a geometrically finite acylindrical hyperbolic 3-manifold and let $M^*$ denote the interior of the convex core of M. We show that any geodesic plane in $M^*$ is either closed or dense, and that there are only countably many closed geodesic planes in $M^*$. These results were obtained earlier by McMullen, Mohammadi, and the second named author when M is convex cocompact. As a corollary we obtain that when $M$ covers an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold $M_0$, the topological behavior of a geodesic plane in $M^*$ is governed by that of the corresponding plane in $M_0$. We construct a c…
We study unions of fundamental domains of a Fuchsian group, especially those with hyperbolic plane metric realizing the metric of the corresponding hyperbolic surface. We call these unions the \textit{geodesic covers} of the Fuchsian group or the hyperbolic surface. The paper contributes to showing that finiteness of geodesic covers is basically another characterization of geometrically finiteness. The resolution of geometrically finite case is based on Shimizu's lemma.
In this paper, we construct families of nonisometric hyperbolic orbifolds that contain the same isometry classes of nonflat totally geodesic subspaces. The main tool is a variant of the well-known Sunada method for constructing length-isospectral Riemannian manifolds that handles totally geodesic submanifolds of multiple codimensions simultaneously.
A finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold geometrically bounds if it is the geodesic boundary of a finite-volume hyperbolic 4-manifold. We construct here an example of non-compact, finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold that geometrically bounds. The 3-manifold is the complement of a link with eight components, and its volume is roughly equal to 29.311.
We prove a partial generalization of Bonahon's tameness result to surfaces inside irreducible 3-manifolds with hyperbolic fundamental group. Bonahon's result states that geometrically infinite ends of freely indecomposable hyperbolic 3-manifolds are simply degenerate. It is easy to see that a geometrically infinite end gives rise to a sequence of curves on the corresponding surface whose geodesic representatives are not contained in any compact set. The main step in his proof is showing that one may assume that these curves are simple on the surface. In this paper, we generalize the main step …
Given a geometrically finite hyperbolic cone-manifold, with the cone singularity sufficiently short, we construct a one parameter family of cone-manifolds decreasing the cone angle to zero. We also control the geometry of this one parameter family via the Schwarzian derivative of the projective boundary and the length of closed geodesics.
In this paper we deepen the analysis of certain classes M_{g,k} of hyperbolic 3-manifolds that were introduced in a previous work by B. Martelli, C. Petronio and the author. Each element of M_{g,k} is an oriented complete finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold with compact connected geodesic boundary of genus g and k cusps. We study small deformations of the complete hyperbolic structure of manifolds in M_{g,k} via a close analysis of their geodesic triangulations. We prove that several elements in M_{g,k} admit non-homeomorphic hyperbolic Dehn fillings sharing the same volume, homology, cusp vol…
Let $G = \langle A,B \rangle$ be a non-elementary two generator subgroup of the isometry group of $\mathbb{H}^2$, the hyperbolic plane. If $G$ is discrete and free and geometrically finite, its quotient is a pair of pants and in prior work we produced a formula for the number of essential self intersections (ESIs) of any primitive geodesic on the quotient. An ESI is a point where the geodesic has a self-intersection on a seam. Self-intersections of geodesics on arbitrary hyperbolic surfaces have recently been studied by Basmajian and Chas. Here we extend our results to two generator subgroups …
Let G be the identity component of SO(n,1), acting linearly on a finite dimensional real vector space V. Consider a vector w_0 in V such that the stabilizer of w_0 is a symmetric subgroup of G or the stabilizer of the line Rw_0 is a parabolic subgroup of G. For any non-elementary discrete subgroup Gamma of G with w_0Gamma discrete, we compute an asymptotic formula for the number of points in w_0Gamma of norm at most T, provided that the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure on the associated hyperbolic manifold and the Gamma skinning size of w_0 are finite. The main ergodic ingredient in our approac…
We characterize geometrically the Lyapunov exponents of a cocycle (of arbitrary rank) with respect to a harmonic current defined on a hyperbolic Riemann surface lamination. Our characterizations are formulated in terms of the expansion rates of the cocycle along geodesic rays.
We prove the shifting theorems of the critical groups of critical points and critical orbits for the energy functionals of Finsler metrics on Hilbert manifolds of $H^1$-curves, and two splitting lemmas for the functionals on Banach manifolds of $C^1$-curves. Two results on critical groups of iterated closed geodesics are also proved; their corresponding versions on Riemannian manifolds are based on the usual splitting lemma by Gromoll and Meyer (1969). Our approach consists in deforming the square of the Finsler metric in a Lagrangian which is smooth also on the zero section and then in using …
A celebrated result of Mirzakhani states that, if $(S,m)$ is a finite area \emph{orientable} hyperbolic surface, then the number of simple closed geodesics of length less than $L$ on $(S,m)$ is asymptotically equivalent to a positive constant times $L^{\dim\mathcal{ML}(S)}$, where $\mathcal{ML}(S)$ denotes the space of measured laminations on $S$. We observed on some explicit examples that this result does not hold for \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surfaces. The aim of this article is to explain this surprising phenomenon. Let $(S,m)$ be a finite area \emph{nonorientable} hyperbolic surface.…
Subset currents on hyperbolic groups were introduced by Kapovich and Nagnibeda as a generalization of geodesic currents on hyperbolic groups, which were introduced by Bonahon and have been successfully studied in the case of the fundamental group $π_1 (Σ)$ of a compact hyperbolic surface $Σ$. Kapovich and Nagnibeda particularly studied subset currents on free groups. In this article, we develop the theory of subset currents on $π_1(Σ)$, which we call subset currents on $Σ$. We prove that the space $\mathrm{SC}(Σ)$ of subset currents on $Σ$ is a measure-theoretic completion of the set of conjug…
