We provide matching upper and lower bounds on the mutual information in noisy reconstruction of parity check codes and thereby prove a long-standing conjecture by Montanari [IEEE Transactions on Information Theory 2005]. Besides extending a prior concentration result of Abbe and Montanari [Theory of Computing 2015] to the case of odd check degrees, we precisely determine the conjectured formula for code ensembles of arbitrary degree distribution, thus capturing a broad class of capacity approaching codes.
An irregular LDGM-LDPC code is studied as a sub-code of an LDPC code with some randomly \emph{punctured} output-bits. It is shown that the LDGM-LDPC codes achieve rates arbitrarily close to the channel-capacity of the binary-input symmetric-output memoryless (BISOM) channel with bounded \emph{complexity}. The measure of complexity is the average-degree (per information-bit) of the check-nodes for the factor-graph of the code. A lower-bound on the average degree of the check-nodes of the irregular LDGM-LDPC codes is obtained. The bound does not depend on the decoder used at the receiver. The st…
In this paper, we study the use of GF(q)-quantized LDGM codes for binary source coding. By employing quantization, it is possible to obtain binary codewords with a non-uniform distribution. The obtained statistics is hence suitable for optimal, direct quantization of non-uniform Bernoulli sources. We employ a message-passing algorithm combined with a decimation procedure in order to perform compression. The experimental results based on GF(q)-LDGM codes with regular degree distributions yield performances quite close to the theoretical rate-distortion bounds.
A three terminal relay system with binary erasure channel (BEC) was considered, in which a source forwarded information to a destination with a relay's "assistance". The nested LDGM (Low-density generator-matrix) -LDPC (low-density parity-check) was designed to realize Compress-and-forward (CF) at the relay. LDGM coding compressed the received signals losslessly and LDPC realized the binning for Slepian-Wolf coding. Firstly a practical coding scheme was proposed to achieve the cut-set bound on the capacity of the system, employing LDPC and Nested LDGM-LDPC codes at the source and relay respect…
In this paper, we address the problem of achieving efficient code-based digital signatures with small public keys. The solution we propose exploits sparse syndromes and randomly designed low-density generator matrix codes. Based on our evaluations, the proposed scheme is able to outperform existing solutions, permitting to achieve considerable security levels with very small public keys.
In this paper, we propose a systematic low density generator matrix (LDGM) code ensemble, which is defined by the Bernoulli process. We prove that, under maximum likelihood (ML) decoding, the proposed ensemble can achieve the capacity of binary-input output symmetric (BIOS) memoryless channels in terms of bit error rate (BER). The proof technique reveals a new mechanism, different from lowering down frame error rate (FER), that the BER can be lowered down by assigning light codeword vectors to light information vectors. The finite length performance is analyzed by deriving an upper bound and a…
We propose in this paper to exploit convolutional low density generator matrix (LDGM) codes for transmission of Bernoulli sources over binary-input output-symmetric (BIOS) channels. To this end, we present a new framework to prove the coding theorems for linear codes, which unifies the channel coding theorem, the source coding theorem and the joint source-channel coding (JSCC) theorem. In the presented framework, the systematic bits and the corresponding parity-check bits play different roles. Precisely, the noisy systematic bits are used to limit the list size of typical codewords, while the …
Low density generator matrix (LDGM) codes have an acceptable performance under iterative decoding algorithms. This idea is used to construct a class of lattices with relatively good performance and low encoding and decoding complexity. To construct such lattices, Construction D is applied to a set of generator vectors of a class of LDGM codes. Bounds on the minimum distance and the coding gain of the corresponding lattices and a corollary for the cross sections and projections of these lattices are provided. The progressive edge growth (PEG) algorithm is used to construct a class of binary cod…
Spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, which were first introduced as LDPC convolutional codes, have been shown to exhibit excellent performance under low-complexity belief-propagation decoding. This phenomenon is now termed threshold saturation via spatial coupling. Spatially-coupled codes have been successfully applied in numerous areas. In particular, it was proven that spatially-coupled regular LDPC codes universally achieve capacity over the class of binary memoryless symmetric (BMS) channels under belief-propagation decoding. Recently, potential functions have been used…
We consider a distributed learning problem in which the computation is carried out on a system consisting of a master node and multiple worker nodes. In such systems, the existence of slow-running machines called stragglers will cause a significant decrease in performance. Recently, coding theoretic framework, which is named Gradient Coding (GC), for mitigating stragglers in distributed learning has been established by Tandon et al. Most studies on GC are aiming at recovering the gradient information completely assuming that the Gradient Descent (GD) algorithm is used as a learning algorithm. …
In this paper we study codes with sparse generator matrices. More specifically, codes with a certain constraint on the weight of all the columns in the generator matrix are considered. The end result is the following. For any binary-input memoryless symmetric (BMS) channel and any epsilon > 2 epsilon*, where epsilon^* = \frac{1}{6}-\frac{5}{3}\log{\frac{4}{3}} \approx 0.085, we show an explicit sequence of capacity-achieving codes with all the column wights of the generator matrix upper bounded by (\log N)^{1+epsilon}, where N is the code block length. The constructions are based on polar code…
In this paper, we study codes with sparse generator matrices. More specifically, low-density generator matrix (LDGM) codes with a certain constraint on the weight of the columns in the generator matrix are considered. In this paper, it is first shown that when a BMS channel W and a constant s>0 are given, there exists a polarization kernel such that the corresponding polar code is capacity-achieving and the column weights of the generator matrix (GM) are bounded from above by $N^s$. Then, a general construction based on a concatenation of polar codes and a rate-$1$ code, and a new column-split…
Raptor codes are rateless codes that achieve the capacity on the binary erasure channels. However the maximum degree of optimal output degree distribution is unbounded. This leads to a computational complexity problem both at encoders and decoders. Aref and Urbanke investigated the potential advantage of universal achieving-capacity property of proposed spatially-coupled (SC) low-density generator matrix (LDGM) codes. However the decoding error probability of SC-LDGM codes is bounded away from 0. In this paper, we investigate SC-LDGM codes concatenated with SC low-density parity-check codes. T…
We study a new encoding scheme for lossy source compression based on spatially coupled low-density generator-matrix codes. We develop a belief-propagation guided-decimation algorithm, and show that this algorithm allows to approach the optimal distortion of spatially coupled ensembles. Moreover, using the survey propagation formalism, we also observe that the optimal distortions of the spatially coupled and individual code ensembles are the same. Since regular low-density generator-matrix codes are known to achieve the Shannon rate-distortion bound under optimal encoding as the degrees grow, o…
Wyner-Ziv coding (WZC) is a compression technique using decoder side information, which is unknown at the encoder, to help the reconstruction. In this paper, we propose and implement a new WZC structure, called residual WZC, for the quadratic-Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problem where side information can be arbitrarily distributed. In our two-stage residual WZC, the source is quantized twice and the input of the second stage is the quantization error (residue) of the first stage. The codebook of the first stage quantizer must be simultaneously good for source and channel coding, since it also acts as a…
In this paper, we propose a class of finite alphabet iterative decoder (FAID), called mutual information-maximizing quantized belief propagation (MIM-QBP) decoder, for decoding regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Our decoder follows the reconstruction-calculation-quantization (RCQ) decoding architecture that is widely used in FAIDs. We present the first complete and systematic design framework for the RCQ parameters, and prove that our design with sufficient precision at node update is able to maximize the mutual information between coded bits and exchanged messages. Simulation resu…
In this letter, we propose a two-stage design method to construct memory efficient mutual information-maximizing quantized min-sum (MIM-QMS) decoder for rate-compatible low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. We first develop a modified density evolution to design a unique set of lookup tables (LUTs) that can be used for rate-compatible LDPC codes. The constructed LUTs are optimized based on their discrepancy values and a merge function to reduce the memory requirement. Numerical results show that the proposed rate-compatible MIM-QMS decoder can reduce the memory requirement for decoding by up …
High-capacity NAND flash memories use multi-level cells (MLCs) to store multiple bits per cell and achieve high storage densities. Higher densities cause increased raw bit error rates (BERs), which demand powerful error correcting codes. Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are a well-known class of capacity-approaching codes in AWGN channels. However, LDPC codes traditionally use soft information while the flash read channel provides only hard information. Low resolution soft information may be obtained by performing multiple reads per cell with distinct word-line voltages. We select the val…
In this letter, we propose a new coordinated multipoint (CoMP) technique based on mutual information (MI) accumulation using rateless codes. Using a stochastic geometry model for the cellular downlink, we quantify the performance enhancements in coverage probability and rate due to MI accumulation. By simulation and analysis, we show that MI accumulation using rateless codes leads to remarkable improvements in coverage and rate for general users and specific cell edge users.
Reed-Muller (RM) codes and polar codes are generated by the same matrix $G_m= \bigl[\begin{smallmatrix}1 & 0 \\ 1 & 1 \\ \end{smallmatrix}\bigr]^{\otimes m}$ but using different subset of rows. RM codes select simply rows having largest weights. Polar codes select instead rows having the largest conditional mutual information proceeding top to down in $G_m$; while this is a more elaborate and channel-dependent rule, the top-to-down ordering has the advantage of making the conditional mutual information polarize, giving directly a capacity-achieving code on any binary memoryless symmetric chann…

Learning interpretable and disentangled representations of data is a key topic in machine learning research. Variational Autoencoder (VAE) is a scalable method for learning directed latent variable models of complex data. It employs a clear and interpretable objective that can be easily optimized. However, this objective does not provide an explicit measure for the quality of latent variable representations which may result in their poor quality. We propose Variational Mutual Information Maximization Framework for VAE to address this issue. In comparison to other methods, it provides an explic…
Variational Autoencoder is a scalable method for learning latent variable models of complex data. It employs a clear objective that can be easily optimized. However, it does not explicitly measure the quality of learned representations. We propose a Variational Mutual Information Maximization Framework for VAE to address this issue. It provides an objective that maximizes the mutual information between latent codes and observations. The objective acts as a regularizer that forces VAE to not ignore the latent code and allows one to select particular components of it to be most informative with …
In this paper, we propose a framework of the mutual information-maximizing (MIM) quantized decoding for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes by using simple mappings and fixed-point additions. Our decoding method is generic in the sense that it can be applied to LDPC codes with arbitrary degree distributions, and can be implemented based on either the belief propagation (BP) algorithm or the min-sum (MS) algorithm. In particular, we propose the MIM density evolution (MIM-DE) to construct the lookup tables (LUTs) for the node updates. The computational complexity and memory requirements are di…
This paper investigates the application of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes to Flash memories. Multiple cell reads with distinct word-line voltages provide limited-precision soft information for the LDPC decoder. The values of the word-line voltages (also called reference voltages) are optimized by maximizing the mutual information (MI) between the input and output of the multiple-read channel. Constraining the maximum mutual-information (MMI) quantization to enforce a constant-ratio constraint provides a significant simplification with no noticeable loss in performance. Our simulation re…
Asymptotic expressions of the mutual information between any discrete input and the corresponding output of the scalar additive white Gaussian noise channel are presented in the limit as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tends to infinity. Asymptotic expressions of the symbol-error probability (SEP) and the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) achieved by estimating the channel input given the channel output are also developed. It is shown that for any input distribution, the conditional entropy of the channel input given the output, MMSE and SEP have an asymptotic behavior proportional to the Gauss…
A functional PIR array code is a coding scheme which encodes some $s$ information bits into a $t\times m$ array such that every linear combination of the $s$ information bits has $k$ mutually disjoint recovering sets. Every recovering set consists of some of the array's columns while it is allowed to read at most $\ell$ encoded bits from every column in order to receive the requested linear combination of the information bits. Functional batch array codes impose a stronger property where every multiset request of $k$ linear combinations has $k$ mutually disjoint recovering sets. Locality funct…
We consider Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels with discrete input alphabets. We propose a non-diagonal precoder based on the X-Codes in \cite{Xcodes_paper} to increase the mutual information. The MIMO channel is transformed into a set of parallel subchannels using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) and X-Codes are then used to pair the subchannels. X-Codes are fully characterized by the pairings and a $2\times 2$ real rotation matrix for each pair (parameterized with a single angle). This precoding structure enables us to express the total mutual information as a sum of t…
In this paper, we show that the soft-decision input to the main decoder in an SST Viterbi decoder is regarded as the innovation as well from the viewpoint of mutual information and mean-square error. It is assumed that a code sequence is transmitted symbol by symbol over an AWGN channel using BPSK modulation. Then we can consider the signal model, where the signal is composed of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the equiprobable binary input. By assuming that the soft-decision input to the main decoder is the innovation, we show that the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) in estimating the bin…
A polar decomposition of mutual information between a complex-valued channel's input and output is proposed for a input whose amplitude and phase are independent of each other. The mutual information is symmetrically decomposed into three terms: an amplitude term, a phase term, and a cross term, whereby the cross term is negligible at high signal-to-noise ratio. Theoretical bounds of the amplitude and phase terms are derived for additive white Gaussian noise channels with Gaussian inputs. This decomposition is then applied to the recently proposed amplitude phase shift keying with product cons…
How well can we approximate a quantum channel output state using a random codebook with a certain size? In this work, we study the quantum soft covering problem. Namely, we use a random codebook with codewords independently sampled from a prior distribution and send it through a classical-quantum channel to approximate the target state. When using a random codebook sampled from an independent and identically distributed prior with a rate above the quantum mutual information, we show that the expected trace distance between the codebook-induced state and the target state decays with exponent gi…
This paper considers optimization of power and delay in a time-varying wireless link using rateless codes. The link serves a sequence of variable-length packets. Each packet is coded and transmitted over multiple slots. Channel conditions can change from slot to slot and are unknown to the transmitter. The amount of mutual information accumulated on each slot depends on the random channel realization and the power used. The goal is to minimize average service delay subject to an average power constraint. We formulate this problem as a frame-based stochastic optimization problem and solve it vi…
We present a method to compute, quickly and efficiently, the mutual information achieved by an IID (independent identically distributed) complex Gaussian input on a block Rayleigh-faded channel without side information at the receiver. The method accommodates both scalar and MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) settings. Operationally, the mutual information thus computed represents the highest spectral efficiency that can be attained using standard Gaussian codebooks. Examples are provided that illustrate the loss in spectral efficiency caused by fast fading and how that loss is amplified by…
Recently, low-resolution LDPC decoders have been introduced that perform mutual information maximizing signal processing. However, the optimal quantization in variable and check nodes requires expensive non-uniform operations. Instead, we propose to use uniform quantization with a simple hardware structure, which reduces the complexity of individual node operations approximately by half and shortens the decoding delay significantly. Our analysis shows that the loss of preserved mutual information resulting from restriction to uniform quantization is very small. Furthermore, the error rate simu…
We consider the estimation of a signal from the knowledge of its noisy linear random Gaussian projections, a problem relevant in compressed sensing, sparse superposition codes or code division multiple access just to cite few. There has been a number of works considering the mutual information for this problem using the heuristic replica method from statistical physics. Here we put these considerations on a firm rigorous basis. First, we show, using a Guerra-type interpolation, that the replica formula yields an upper bound to the exact mutual information. Secondly, for many relevant practical…
