We consider lossy compression of a binary symmetric source by means of a low-density generator-matrix code. We derive two lower bounds on the rate distortion function which are valid for any low-density generator-matrix code with a given node degree distribution L(x) on the set of generators and for any encoding algorithm. These bounds show that, due to the sparseness of the code, the performance is strictly bounded away from the Shannon rate-distortion function. In this sense, our bounds represent a natural generalization of Gallager's bound on the maximum rate at which low-density parity-check codes can be used for reliable transmission. Our bounds are similar in spirit to the technique recently developed by Dimakis, Wainwright, and Ramchandran, but they apply to individual codes.
A recent line of work has focused on the use of low-density generator matrix (LDGM) codes for lossy source coding. In this paper, wedevelop a generic technique for deriving lower bounds on the rate-distortion functions of binary linear codes, with particular interest on the effect of bounded degrees. The underlying ideas can be viewing as the source coding analog of the classical result of Gallager, providing bounds for channel coding over the binary symmetric channel using bounded degree LDPC codes. We illustrate this method for different random ensembles of LDGM codes, including the check-re…
Recent work has suggested that low-density generator matrix (LDGM) codes are likely to be effective for lossy source coding problems. We derive rigorous upper bounds on the effective rate-distortion function of LDGM codes for the binary symmetric source, showing that they quickly approach the rate-distortion function as the degree increases. We also compare and contrast the standard LDGM construction with a compound LDPC/LDGM construction introduced in our previous work, which provably saturates the rate-distortion bound with finite degrees. Moreover, this compound construction can be used to …
While iterative quantizers based on low-density generator-matrix (LDGM) codes have been shown to be able to achieve near-ideal distortion performance with comparatively moderate block length and computational complexity requirements, their analysis remains difficult due to the presence of decimation steps. In this paper, considering the use of LDGM-based quantizers in a class of symmetric source coding problems, with the alphabet being either binary or non-binary, it is proved rigorously that, as long as the degree distribution satisfies certain conditions that can be evaluated with density ev…
In this paper, we study the use of GF(q)-quantized LDGM codes for binary source coding. By employing quantization, it is possible to obtain binary codewords with a non-uniform distribution. The obtained statistics is hence suitable for optimal, direct quantization of non-uniform Bernoulli sources. We employ a message-passing algorithm combined with a decimation procedure in order to perform compression. The experimental results based on GF(q)-LDGM codes with regular degree distributions yield performances quite close to the theoretical rate-distortion bounds.
We study a new encoding scheme for lossy source compression based on spatially coupled low-density generator-matrix codes. We develop a belief-propagation guided-decimation algorithm, and show that this algorithm allows to approach the optimal distortion of spatially coupled ensembles. Moreover, using the survey propagation formalism, we also observe that the optimal distortions of the spatially coupled and individual code ensembles are the same. Since regular low-density generator-matrix codes are known to achieve the Shannon rate-distortion bound under optimal encoding as the degrees grow, o…
We propose a new algorithm for binary quantization based on the Belief Propagation algorithm with decimation over factor graphs of Low Density Generator Matrix (LDGM) codes. This algorithm, which we call Bias Propagation (BiP), can be considered as a special case of the Survey Propagation algorithm proposed for binary quantization by Wainwright et al. [8]. It achieves the same near-optimal rate-distortion performance with a substantially simpler framework and 10-100 times faster implementation. We thus challenge the widespread belief that binary quantization based on sparse linear codes cannot…
We describe message-passing and decimation approaches for lossy source coding using low-density generator matrix (LDGM) codes. In particular, this paper addresses the problem of encoding a Bernoulli(0.5) source: for randomly generated LDGM codes with suitably irregular degree distributions, our methods yield performance very close to the rate distortion limit over a range of rates. Our approach is inspired by the survey propagation (SP) algorithm, originally developed by Mezard et al. for solving random satisfiability problems. Previous work by Maneva et al. shows how SP can be understood as b…
In this paper, we propose an efficient coding scheme for the binary Chief Executive Officer (CEO) problem under logarithmic loss criterion. Courtade and Weissman obtained the exact rate-distortion bound for a two-link binary CEO problem under this criterion. We find the optimal test-channel model and its parameters for the encoder of each link by using the given bound. Furthermore, an efficient encoding scheme based on compound LDGM-LDPC codes is presented to achieve the theoretical rates. In the proposed encoding scheme, a binary quantizer using LDGM codes and a syndrome-decoding employing LD…
The source coding problem with action-dependent side information at the decoder has recently been introduced to model data acquisition in resource-constrained systems. In this paper, an efficient algorithm for numerical computation of the rate-distortion-cost function for this problem is proposed, and a convergence proof is provided. Moreover, a two-stage code design based on multiplexing is put forth, whereby the first stage encodes the actions and the second stage is composed of an array of classical Wyner-Ziv codes, one for each action. Specific coding/decoding strategies are designed based…
The $L$-link binary Chief Executive Officer (CEO) problem under logarithmic loss is investigated in this paper. A quantization splitting technique is applied to convert the problem under consideration to a $(2L-1)$-step successive Wyner-Ziv (WZ) problem, for which a practical coding scheme is proposed. In the proposed scheme, low-density generator-matrix (LDGM) codes are used for binary quantization while low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are used for syndrome generation; the decoder performs successive decoding based on the received syndromes and produces a soft reconstruction of the remo…
Classical rate-distortion theory requires knowledge of an elusive source distribution. Instead, we analyze rate-distortion properties of individual objects using the recently developed algorithmic rate-distortion theory. The latter is based on the noncomputable notion of Kolmogorov complexity. To apply the theory we approximate the Kolmogorov complexity by standard data compression techniques, and perform a number of experiments with lossy compression and denoising of objects from different domains. We also introduce a natural generalization to lossy compression with side information. To maint…
We examine the structure of families of distortion balls from the perspective of Kolmogorov complexity. Special attention is paid to the canonical rate-distortion function of a source word which returns the minimal Kolmogorov complexity of all distortion balls containing that word subject to a bound on their cardinality. This canonical rate-distortion function is related to the more standard algorithmic rate-distortion function for the given distortion measure. Examples are given of list distortion, Hamming distortion, and Euclidean distortion. The algorithmic rate-distortion function can beha…
In this paper we analyze the joint rate distortion function (RDF), for a tuple of correlated sources taking values in abstract alphabet spaces (i.e., continuous) subject to two individual distortion criteria. First, we derive structural properties of the realizations of the reproduction Random Variables (RVs), which induce the corresponding optimal test channel distributions of the joint RDF. Second, we consider a tuple of correlated multivariate jointly Gaussian RVs, $X_1 : Ω\rightarrow {\mathbb R}^{p_1}, X_2 : Ω\rightarrow {\mathbb R}^{p_2}$ with two square-error fidelity criteria, and we de…

We describe and analyze the joint source/channel coding properties of a class of sparse graphical codes based on compounding a low-density generator matrix (LDGM) code with a low-density parity check (LDPC) code. Our first pair of theorems establish that there exist codes from this ensemble, with all degrees remaining bounded independently of block length, that are simultaneously optimal as both source and channel codes when encoding and decoding are performed optimally. More precisely, in the context of lossy compression, we prove that finite degree constructions can achieve any pair $(R, D)$…
The joint nonanticipative rate distortion function (NRDF) for a tuple of random processes with individual fidelity criteria is considered. Structural properties of optimal test channel distributions are derived. Further, for the application example of the joint NRDF of a tuple of jointly multivariate Gaussian Markov processes with individual square-error fidelity criteria, a realization of the reproduction processes which induces the optimal test channel distribution is derived, and the corresponding joint NRDF is characterized. The analysis of the simplest example, of a tuple of scalar correl…
We prove the existence of codebooks for d-semifaithful lossy compression that are simultaneously universal with respect to both the class of finite-alphabet memoryless sources and the class of all bounded additive distortion measures. By applying independent random selection of the codewords according to a mixture of all memoryless sources, we achieve redundancy rates that are within O(log n/n) close to the empirical rate-distortion function of every given source vector with respect to every bounded distortion measure. As outlined in the last section, the principal ideas can also be extended s…
The unrestricted LZ78 universal data-compression algorithm (as well as the LZ77 and LZW versions) achieves asymptotically, as the block-length tends to infinity, the FS compressibility, namely the best compression-ratio that may be achieved by any Information-lossless(IL) block-to-variable finite-state(FS) algorithm, for any infinitely-long individual sequence. The encoder parses the sequence into distinct phrases where each newly generated phrase is a past phrase which is already stored in a dictionary, extended by one letter. The newly generated phrase is then added to the updated, ever-grow…
We consider a variation of the Wyner-Ziv problem pertaining to lossy compression of individual sequences using finite-state encoders and decoders. There are two main results in this paper. The first characterizes the relationship between the performance of the best $M$-state encoder-decoder pair to that of the best block code of size $\ell$ for every input sequence, and shows that the loss of the latter relative to the former (in terms of both rate and distortion) never exceeds the order of $(\log M)/\ell$, independently of the input sequence. Thus, in the limit of large $M$, the best rate-dis…
L multiple descriptions of a vector Gaussian source for individual and central receivers are investigated. The sum rate of the descriptions with covariance distortion measure constraints, in a positive semidefinite ordering, is exactly characterized. For two descriptions, the entire rate region is characterized. Jointly Gaussian descriptions are optimal in achieving the limiting rates. The key component of the solution is a novel information-theoretic inequality that is used to lower bound the achievable multiple description rates.
Motivated by video coding applications, the problem of sequential coding of correlated sources with encoding and/or decoding frame-delays is studied. The fundamental tradeoffs between individual frame rates, individual frame distortions, and encoding/decoding frame-delays are derived in terms of a single-letter information-theoretic characterization of the rate-distortion region for general inter-frame source correlations and certain types of potentially frame specific and coupled single-letter fidelity criteria. The sum-rate-distortion region is characterized in terms of generalized directed …
We consider multiple description coding for the Gaussian source with K descriptions under the symmetric mean squared error distortion constraints, and provide an approximate characterization of the rate region. We show that the rate region can be sandwiched between two polytopes, between which the gap can be upper bounded by constants dependent on the number of descriptions, but independent of the exact distortion constraints. Underlying this result is an exact characterization of the lossless multi-level diversity source coding problem: a lossless counterpart of the MD problem. This connectio…
In this work, we establish a full single-letter characterization of the rate-distortion region of an instance of the Gray-Wyner model with side information at the decoders. Specifically, in this model an encoder observes a pair of memoryless, arbitrarily correlated, sources $(S^n_1,S^n_2)$ and communicates with two receivers over an error-free rate-limited link of capacity $R_0$, as well as error-free rate-limited individual links of capacities $R_1$ to the first receiver and $R_2$ to the second receiver. Both receivers reproduce the source component $S^n_2$ losslessly; and Receiver $1$ also r…
It is well known that independent (separate) encoding of K correlated sources may incur some rate loss compared to joint encoding, even if the decoding is done jointly. This loss is particularly evident in the multiple descriptions problem, where the sources are repetitions of the same source, but each description must be individually good. We observe that under mild conditions about the source and distortion measure, the rate ratio Rindependent(K)/Rjoint goes to one in the limit of small rate/high distortion. Moreover, we consider the excess rate with respect to the rate-distortion function, …
Consider a pair of correlated Gaussian sources (X1,X2). Two separate encoders observe the two components and communicate compressed versions of their observations to a common decoder. The decoder is interested in reconstructing a linear combination of X1 and X2 to within a mean-square distortion of D. We obtain an inner bound to the optimal rate-distortion region for this problem. A portion of this inner bound is achieved by a scheme that reconstructs the linear function directly rather than reconstructing the individual components X1 and X2 first. This results in a better rate region for cert…
In this work, the rate region of the vector Gaussian multiple description problem with individual and central quadratic distortion constraints is studied. In particular, an outer bound to the rate region of the L-description problem is derived. The bound is obtained by lower bounding a weighted sum rate for each supporting hyperplane of the rate region. The key idea is to introduce at most L-1 auxiliary random variables and further impose upon the variables a Markov structure according to the ordering of the description weights. This makes it possible to greatly simplify the derivation of the …

In this paper, we use tools from rate-distortion theory to establish new upper bounds on the generalization error of statistical distributed learning algorithms. Specifically, there are $K$ clients whose individually chosen models are aggregated by a central server. The bounds depend on the compressibility of each client's algorithm while keeping other clients' algorithms un-compressed, and leverage the fact that small changes in each local model change the aggregated model by a factor of only $1/K$. Adopting a recently proposed approach by Sefidgaran et al., and extending it suitably to the d…

Path planning is an important component of au- tonomous mobile sensing systems. This paper studies upper and lower bounds of communication performance over Gaussian sen- sor networks, to drive power-distortion metrics for path planning problems. The Gaussian multiple-access channel is employed as a channel model and two source models are considered. In the first setting, the underlying source is estimated with minimum mean squared error, while in the second, reconstruction of a random spatial field is considered. For both problem settings, the upper and the lower bounds of sensor power-distort…
