In this paper, we study the use of GF(q)-quantized LDGM codes for binary source coding. By employing quantization, it is possible to obtain binary codewords with a non-uniform distribution. The obtained statistics is hence suitable for optimal, direct quantization of non-uniform Bernoulli sources. We employ a message-passing algorithm combined with a decimation procedure in order to perform compression. The experimental results based on GF(q)-LDGM codes with regular degree distributions yield performances quite close to the theoretical rate-distortion bounds.
Recent work has suggested that low-density generator matrix (LDGM) codes are likely to be effective for lossy source coding problems. We derive rigorous upper bounds on the effective rate-distortion function of LDGM codes for the binary symmetric source, showing that they quickly approach the rate-distortion function as the degree increases. We evaluate typical performance of irregular low-density generator-matrix (LDGM) codes, which is defined by sparse matrices with arbitrary irregular bit degree distribution and arbitrary check degree distribution, for lossy compression. We establish two strong senses of universality of logarithmic loss as a distortion criterion in lossy compression: For any fixed length lossy compression problem under an arbitrary distortion criterion, we show that there is an equivalent lossy compression problem under logarithmic loss. In the successive refinement problem, if the first decoder operates under logarithmic loss, we show that any discrete memoryless source is successively refinable under an arbitrary distortion criterion for the second decoder.
Lossy compression algorithms take advantage of the inherent limitations of the human eye and discard information that cannot be seen. In the present paper, a technique termed as Lossy Data Compression using Logarithm (LDCL) is proposed to compress incoming binary data in the form of a resultant matrix containing the logarithmic values of different chosen numeric sets. We consider the computational aspects of lossy data compression problem, where the compression error is determined by a cover of the data space. We propose an algorithm which reduces the number of partitions needed to find the entropy with respect to the compression error. In particular, we show that, in the case of finite cover, the entropy is attained on some partition. We give an algorithmic construction of such partition.

In this work, a likelihood encoder is studied in the context of lossy source compression. The analysis of the likelihood encoder is based on a soft-covering lemma. It is demonstrated that the use of a likelihood encoder together with the soft-covering lemma gives alternative achievability proofs for classical source coding problems. The case of the rate-distortion function with side information at the decoder (i.e. the Wyner-Ziv problem) is carefully examined and an application of the likelihood encoder to the multi-terminal source coding inner bound (i.e. the Berger-Tung region) is outlined.

We consider a novel variant of $d$-semifaithful lossy coding in which the distortion measure is revealed only to the encoder and only at run-time, as well as an extension of it in which the distortion constraint $d$ is also revealed at run-time. Two forms of rate redundancy are used to analyze the performance, and achievability results of both a pointwise and minimax nature are demonstrated. The first coding scheme uses ideas from VC dimension and growth functions, the second uses appropriate quantization of the space of distortion measures, and the third relies on a random coding argument.

The belief propagation (BP) based algorithm is investigated as a potential decoder for both of error correcting codes and lossy compression, which are based on non-monotonic tree-like multilayer perceptron encoders. We discuss that whether the BP can give practical algorithms or not in these schemes. The BP implementations in those kind of fully connected networks unfortunately shows strong limitation, while the theoretical results seems a bit promising. Instead, it reveals it might have a rich and complex structure of the solution space via the BP-based algorithms.

A lossy data compression scheme for uniformly biased Boolean messages is investigated via statistical mechanics techniques. We utilize tree-like committee machine (committee tree) and tree-like parity machine (parity tree) whose transfer functions are non-monotonic. The scheme performance at the infinite code length limit is analyzed using the replica method. Both committee and parity treelike networks are shown to saturate the Shannon bound. The AT stability of the Replica Symmetric solution is analyzed, and the tuning of the non-monotonic transfer function is also discussed.
