We present the notion of a filtered bundle as a generalisation of a graded bundle. In particular, we weaken the necessity of the transformation laws for local coordinates to exactly respect the weight of the coordinates by allowing more general polynomial transformation laws. The key examples of such bundles include affine bundles and various jet bundles, both of which play fundamental roles in geometric mechanics and classical field theory. We also present the notion of double filtered bundles which provide natural generalisations of double vector bundles and double affine bundles. Furthermore, we show that the linearisation of a filtered bundle - which can be seen as a partial polarisation of the admissible changes of local coordinates - is well defined.
We prove the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence between good wild harmonic bundles and polystable good filtered $λ$-flat bundles satisfying a vanishing condition. We also study the correspondence for good wild harmonic bundles with the homogeneity with respect to a group action, which is expected to provide another way to construct Frobenius manifolds.
We show that a diffeological bundle gives rise to an exact sequence of internal tangent spaces. We then introduce two new classes of diffeological spaces, which we call weakly filtered and filtered diffeological spaces, whose tangent spaces are easier to understand. These are the diffeological spaces whose categories of pointed plots are (weakly) filtered. We extend the exact sequence one step further in the case of a diffeological bundle with filtered total space and base space. We also show that the tangent bundle $T^H X$ defined by Hector is a diffeological vector space over $X$ when $X$ is…
A filtered manifold is a smooth manifold $M$ together with a filtration of the tangent bundle by smooth subbundles which is compatible with the Lie bracket of vector fields in a certain sense. The Lie bracket of vector fields then induces a bilinear operation on the associated graded of each tangent space of $M$ making it into a nilpotent graded Lie algebra. Assuming that these symbol algebras are the same for all points, one obtains a natural frame bundle for the associated graded to the tangent bundle, and filtered G--structures are defined as reductions of structure group of this bundle. Ge…
We develop an alternative view on the concept of connections over a vector bundle map, which consists of a horizontal lift procedure to a prolonged bundle. We further focus on prolongations to an affine bundle and introduce the concept of affineness of a generalised connection.
We study the geometry and topology of (filtered) algebra-bundles ${\bfΨ}^{\mathbb Z}$ over a smooth manifold $X$ with typical fibre $Ψ^{\mathbb Z}(Z; V)$, the algebra of classical pseudodifferential operators of integral order on the compact manifold $Z$ acting on smooth sections of a vector bundle $V$. First a theorem of Duistermaat and Singer is generalized to the assertion that the group of projective invertible Fourier integral operators ${\rm PGL}({\mathcal F}^\bullet(Z; V))$, is precisely the automorphism group, ${\rm Aut}(Ψ^{\mathbb Z}(Z; V)),$ of the filtered algebra of pseudodifferent…
We introduce the concepts of a multisymplectic structure and a polysymplectic structure on a general fiber bundle over a general base manifold, define the concept of the symbol of a multisymplectic form, which is a polysymplectic form representing its leading order contribution, and prove Darboux theorems for the existence of canonical local coordinates.
We introduce the concept of a higher algebroid, generalizing the notions of an algebroid and a higher tangent bundle. Our ideas are based on a description of (Lie) algebroids as vector bundle comorphisms - differential relations of a special kind. In our approach higher algebroids are vector bundle comorphism between graded-linear bundles satisfying natural axioms. We provide natural examples and discuss applications in geometric mechanics.
As a continuation of previous papers, we study the concept of a Lie algebroid structure on an affine bundle by means of the canonical immersion of the affine bundle into its bidual. We pay particular attention to the prolongation and various lifting procedures, and to the geometrical construction of Lagrangian-type dynamics on an affine Lie algebroid.
We review the concept of a graded bundle as a natural generalisation of a vector bundle. Such geometries are particularly nice examples of more general graded manifolds. With hindsight there are many examples of graded bundles that appear in the existing literature. We start with a discussion of graded spaces, passing through graded bundles and their linearisation to end with weighted (graded) Lie groupoids/algebroids.
This work has the purpose of applying the concept of Geometric Calculus (Clifford Algebras) to the Fibre Bundle description of Quantum Mechanics. Thus, it is intended to generalize that formulation to curved spacetimes [the base space of the fibre bundle in question] in a more natural way. It starts off with a review of the mathematical tools needed and then moves on to build the objects necessary.
A notion of an algebroid - a generalization of a Lie algebroid structure is introduced. We show that many objects of the differential calculus on a manifold M associated with the canonical Lie algebroid structure on T^M can be obtained in the framework of a general algebroid. Also a compatibility condition which leads, in general, to a concept of a bialgebroid.
We introduce the concept of a graded bundle which is a natural generalization of the concept of a vector bundle and whose standard examples are higher tangent bundles T^nQ playing a fundamental role in higher order Lagrangian formalisms. Graded bundles are graded manifolds in the sense that we can choose an atlas whose local coordinates are homogeneous functions of degrees 0,1,...,n. We prove that graded bundles have a convenient equivalent description as homogeneity structures, i.e. manifolds with a smooth action of the multiplicative monoid of non-negative reals. The main result states that …
We introduce the notion of a Lie algebroid structure on an affine bundle whose base manifold is fibred over the real numbers. It is argued that this is the framework which one needs for coming to a time-dependent generalization of the theory of Lagrangian systems on Lie algebroids. An extensive discussion is given of a way one can think of forms acting on sections of the affine bundle. It is further shown that the affine Lie algebroid structure gives rise to a coboundary operator on such forms. The concept of admissible curves and dynamical systems whose integral curves are admissible, brings …
In this review paper we discuss the different interpretations of the concept of connection in a fiber bundle and in a jet bundle, and relate it with first and second-order systems of partial differential equations (PDE's) and multivector fields. As particular cases we analyze the concepts of linear connections and connections in a manifold.
The purpose of this paper is two-fold: we systematically introduce the notion of Cheeger deformations on fiber bundles with compact structure groups, and recover in a very simple and unified fashion several results that either already appear in the literature or are known by experts, though are not explicitly written elsewhere. We re-prove: Schwachhöfer--Tuschmann Theorem on bi-quotients, many results due to Fukaya and Yamaguchi, as well as, naturally extend the work of Searle--Solórzano--Wilhelm on regularization properties of Cheeger deformations, among others. In this sense, this paper shou…
Under appropriate assumptions, we generalize the concept of linear almost Poisson struc- tures, almost Lie algebroids, almost differentials in the framework of Banach anchored bundles and the relation between these objects. We then obtain an adapted formalism for mechanical systems which is illustrated by the evolutionary problem of the "Hilbert snake"
In this paper, we introduce the concept of principal bundles on statistical manifolds. After necessary preliminaries on information geometry and principal bundles on manifolds, we study the $α$-structure of frame bundles over statistical manifolds with respect to $α$-connections, by giving geometric structures. The manifold of one-dimensional normal distributions appears in the end as an application and a concrete example.
Graded bundles are a class of graded manifolds which represent a natural generalisation of vector bundles and include the higher order tangent bundles as canonical examples. We present and study the concept of the linearisation of graded bundle which allows us to define the notion of the linear dual of a graded bundle. They are examples of double structures, graded-linear ($\mathcal{GL}$) bundles, including double vector bundles as a particular case. On $\mathcal{GL}$-bundles we define what we shall call weighted algebroids, which are to be understood as algebroids in the category of graded bu…
A pedagogical but concise overview of fiber bundles and their connections is provided, in the context of gauge theories in physics. The emphasis is on defining and visualizing concepts and relationships between them, as well as listing common confusions, alternative notations and jargon, and relevant facts and theorems. Special attention is given to detailed figures and geometric viewpoints, some of which would seem to be novel to the literature. Topics are avoided which are well covered in textbooks, such as historical motivations, proofs and derivations, and tools for practical calculations.…
This article presents a purely functional-analytic construction of the concept of stochastic parallel transport in Hermitian bundles over Riemannian manifolds. As a byproduct, we also obtain a form of the Feynman-Kac formula in vector bundles that is, to our best knowledge, the most general found so far.
We present a clear-cut example of the importance of the functorial approach of gauge-natural bundles and the general theory of Lie derivatives for classical field theory, where the sole correct geometrical formulation of Einstein (-Cartan) gravity coupled with Dirac fields gives rise to an unexpected indeterminacy in the concept of conserved quantities.
A coordinate-free proof of the Maximum Principle is provided in the specific case of an optimal control problem with fixed time. Our treatment heavily relies on a special notion of variation of curves that consist of a concatenation of integral curves of time-dependent vector fields with unit time component, and on the use of a concept of lift over a bundle map. We further derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of so-called abnormal and strictly abnormal extremals.
This survey intends to present the basic notions of Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) through its paradigmatic application in the construction of the moduli space of holomorphic vector bundles. Special attention is paid to the notion of stability from different points of view and to the concept of maximal unstability, represented by the Harder-Narasimhan filtration and, from which, correspondences with the GIT picture and results derived from stratifications on the moduli space are discussed.
We consider a diffeological counterpart of the notion of a vector bundle (we call this counterpart a pseudo-bundle, although in the other works it is called differently; among the existing terms there are a "regular vector bundle" of Vincent and "diffeological vector space over X" of Christensen-Wu). The main difference of the diffeological version is that (for reasons stemming from the independent appearance of this concept elsewhere), diffeological vector pseudo-bundles may easily not be locally trivial (and we provide various examples of such, including those where the underlying topologica…
