We consider branched coverings which are simple in the sense that any point of the target has at most one singular preimage. The cobordism classes of $k$-fold simple branched coverings between $n$-manifolds form an abelian group $Cob^1(n,k)$. Moreover, $Cob^1(*,k) = \bigoplus_{n=0}^{\infty} Cob^1(n,k)$ is a module over $Ω^{SO}_*$. We construct a universal $k$-fold simple branched covering, and use it to compute this module rationally. As a corollary, we determine the rank of the groups $Cob^1(n,k)$. In the case $n = 2$ we compute the group $Cob^1(2,k)$, give a complete set of invariants and construct generators.
In this work we characterize branch data of branched coverings of even degree over the projective plane which are realizable by indecomposable branched coverings.
A branched covering surface-knot is a surface-knot in the form of a branched covering over a surface-knot. For a branched covering surface-knot, we have a numerical invariant called the simplifying number. We show that branched covering surface-knots with degree three have the simplifying numbers less than three.
We give an explicit formula for a 2-fold branched covering from $\mathbb{CP}^2$ to $S^4$, and relate it to other maps between quotients of $S^2\times{S^2}$.
Strongly-cyclic branched coverings of knots are studied by using their (g,1)-decompositions. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of such coverings are obtained. It is also shown that their fundamental groups admit geometric g-words cyclic presentations.
Given a branched covering of degree d between closed surfaces, it determines a collection of partitions of d, the branch data. In this work we show that any branch data are realized by an indecomposable primitive branched covering on a connected close surface N with Euler's characteristic less than or equal to 0. This shows that decomposable and indecomposable realizations may coexist. Moreover, we characterize the branch data of a decomposable primitive branched covering.
A branched covering surface-knot is a surface-knot in the form of a branched covering over an oriented surface-knot $F$, where we include the case when the covering has no branch points. A branched covering surface-knot is presented by a graph called a chart on a surface diagram of $F$. We can simplify a branched covering surface-knot by an addition of 1-handles with chart loops to a form such that its chart is the union of free edges and 1-handles with chart loops. We investigate properties of such simplifications for the case when branched covering surface-knots have a non-zero number of bra…
A branched covering surface-knot over an oriented surface-knot $F$ is a surface-knot in the form of a branched covering over $F$. A branched covering surface-knot over $F$ is presented by a graph called a chart on a surface diagram of $F$. For a branched covering surface-knot, an addition of 1-handles equipped with chart loops is a simplifying operation which deforms the chart to the form of the union of free edges and 1-handles with chart loops. We investigate properties of such simplifications.
In this paper we study the connections between cyclic presentations of groups and branched cyclic coverings of (1,1)-knots. In particular, we prove that every n-fold strongly-cyclic branched covering of a (1,1)-knot admits a cyclic presentation for the fundamental group encoded by a Heegaard diagram of genus n.
In a recent paper Y. Hu has given a sufficient condition for the fundamental group of the r-th cyclic branched covering of S^3 along a prime knot to be left-orderable in terms of representations of the knot group. Applying her criterion to a large class of two-bridge knots, we determine a range of the integer r>1 for which the r-th cyclic branched covering of S^3 along the knot is left-orderable.
We discuss 3-manifolds which are cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere, branched over 2-bridge knots and links. Different descriptions of these manifolds are presented: polyhedral, Heegaard diagram, Dehn surgery and coloured graph constructions. Using these descriptions, we give presentations for their fundamental groups, which are cyclic presentations in the case of 2-bridge knots. The homology groups are given for a wide class of cases. Moreover, we prove that each singly-cyclic branched covering of a 2-bridge link is the composition of a meridian-cyclic branched covering of a determined link and…
We study simple branched coverings of degree d of the 2- and 3- dimensional sphere branched over oriented links. We demonstrate how to use braid charts to develop embeddings of these into $S^k \times D^2$ for $k=2,3 when $d=2,3$. This is an initial part of our study and represents the manuscript submitted to the RIMS workshop at Intelligence of Low Dimensional Topology.
We study the connections among the mapping class group of the twice punctured torus, the cyclic branched coverings of (1,1)-knots and the cyclic presentations of groups. We give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the n-fold strongly-cyclic branched coverings of (1,1)-knots, through the elements of the mapping class group. We prove that every n-fold strongly-cyclic branched covering of a (1,1)-knot admits a cyclic presentation for the fundamental group, arising from a Heegaard splitting of genus n. Moreover, we give an algorithm to produce the cyclic pre…
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a 4-manifold to be a branched covering of $CP^2$, $S^2\times S^2$, $S^2 \mathbin{\tilde\times} S^2$ and $S^3 \times S^1$, which are expressed in terms of the Betti numbers and the intersection form of the 4-manifold.
We give simple homological conditions for a rational homology 3-sphere Y to have infinite order in the rational homology cobordism group, and for a collection of rational homology spheres to be linearly independent. These translate immediately to statements about knot concordance when Y is the branched double cover of a knot, recovering some results of Livingston and Naik. The statements depend only on the homology groups of the 3-manifolds, but are proven through an analysis of correction terms and their behavior under connected sums.
In this work we study the decomposability property of branched coverings of degree $d$ odd, over the projective plane, where the covering surface has Euler characteristic $\leq 0$. The latter condition is equivalent to say that the defect of the covering is greater than $d$. We show that, given a datum $\mathscr{D}=\{D_{1},\dots,D_{s}\}$ with an even defect greater than $d$, it is realizable by an indecomposable branched covering over the projective plane. The case when $d$ is even is known.
We are interested in finite groups acting orientation-preservingly on 3-manifolds (arbitrary actions, ie not necessarily free actions). In particular we consider finite groups which contain an involution with nonempty connected fixed point set. This condition is satisfied by the isometry group of any hyperbolic cyclic branched covering of a strongly invertible knot as well as by the isometry group of any hyperbolic 2-fold branched covering of a knot in the 3-sphere. In the paper we give a characterization of nonsolvable groups of this type. Then we consider some possible applications to the st…
By a construction of Berstein and Edmonds every proper branched cover f between manifolds is a factor of a branched covering orbit map from a locally connected and locally compact Hausdorff space called the monodromy space of f to the target manifold. For proper branched covers between 2-manifolds the monodromy space is known to be a manifold. We show that this does not generalize to dimension 3 by constructing a self-map of the 3-sphere for which the monodromy space is not a locally contractible space.
We discuss how the fractional Dehn twist coefficient behaves under a fully ramified branched covering of an open book, and give applications to both topological and contact 3-manifolds. Among them, we show that non-right-veering closed braids represent virtually loose transverse links.
One method for obtaining every closed orientable 3-manifold is as branched covering of the 3-sphere over a link. There is a classical topological result showing that the minimun possible number of sheets in the covering is three. In this paper we obtain a geometric version of this result. The interest is given by the growing importance of geometry in 3-manifolds theory.
We give the rectangle condition for strong irreducibility of Heegaard splittings of $3$-manifolds with non-empty boundary. We apply this to a generalized Heegaard splitting of a $2$-fold covering of $S^3$ branched along a link. The condition implies that any thin meridional level surface in the link complement is incompressible. We also show that the additivity of knot width holds for a composite knot satisfying the condition.
We show that any homologically non-trivial Dehn twist of a compact surface F with boundary is the lifting of a half-twist in the braid group B_n, with respect to a suitable branched covering p : F -> B^2. In particular, we allow the surface to have disconnected boundary. As a consequence, any allowable Lefschetz fibration on B^2 is a branched covering of B^2 x B^2.
We prove that a prime knot K is not determined by its p-fold cyclic branched cover for at most two odd primes p. Moreover, we show that for a given odd prime p, the p-fold cyclic branched cover of a prime knot K is the p-fold cyclic branched cover of at most one more knot K' non equivalent to K. To prove the main theorem, a result concerning the symmetries of knots is also obtained. This latter result can be interpreted as a characterisation of the trivial knot.
A combinatorial presentation of closed orientable 3-manifolds as bi-tricolored links is given together with two versions of a calculus via moves to manipulate bi-tricolored links without changing the represented manifold. That is, we provide a finite set of moves sufficient to relate any two manifestations of the same 3-manifold as a simple 4-sheeted branched covering of S^3.
We show that every strongly-cyclic branched covering of a (1,1)-knot is a Dunwoody manifold. This result, together with the converse statement previously obtained by Grasselli and Mulazzani, proves that the class of Dunwoody manifolds coincides with the class of strongly-cyclic branched coverings of (1,1)-knots. As a consequence, we obtain a parametrization of (1,1)-knots by 4-tuples of integers. Moreover, using a representation of (1,1)-knots by the mapping class group of the twice punctured torus, we provide an algorithm which gives the parametrization of all torus knots.
We consider closed orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds which are cyclic branched coverings of the 3-sphere, with branching set being a two-bridge knot (or link). We establish two-sided linear bounds depending on the order of the covering for the Matveev complexity of the covering manifold. The lower estimate uses the hyperbolic volume and results of Cao-Meyerhoff and Gueritaud-Futer (who recently improved previous work of Lackenby), while the upper estimate is based on an explicit triangulation, which also allows us to give a bound on the Delzant T-invariant of the fundamental group …
We give a construction of quandle cocycles from group cocycles, especially, for any integer p \geq 3, quandle cocycles of the dihedral quandle R_p from group cocycles of the cyclic group Z/p. We will show that a group 3-cocycle of Z/p gives rise to a non-trivial quandle 3-cocycle of R_p. When p is an odd prime, since dim_{F_p} H_Q^3(R_p; F_p) = 1, our 3-cocycle is a constant multiple of the Mochizuki 3-cocycle up to coboundary. Dually, we construct a group cycle represented by a cyclic branched covering branched along a knot K from the quandle cycle associated with a colored diagram of K.
We provide an alternative proof of a sufficient condition for the fundamental group of the $n^{th}$ cyclic branched cover of $S^3$ along a prime knot $K$ to be left-orderable, which is originally due to Boyer-Gordon-Watson. As an application of this sufficient condition, we show that for any $(p,q)$ two-bridge knot, with $p\equiv 3 \text{ mod } 4$, there are only finitely many cyclic branched covers whose fundamental groups are not left-orderable. This answers a question posed by D{\c a}bkowski, Przytycki and Togha.
We provide new branched covering representations for bounded and/or non-compact 4-manifolds, which extend the known ones for closed 4-manifolds. Assuming $M$ to be a connected oriented PL 4-manifold, our main results are the following: (1) if $M$ is compact with (possibly empty) boundary, there exists a simple branched cover $p:M \to S^4 - \mathop{\mathrm{Int}}(B^4_1 \cup \dots \cup B^4_n)$, where the $B^4_i$'s are disjoint PL 4-balls, $n \geq 0$ is the number of boundary components of $M$; (2) if $M$ is open, there exists a simple branched cover $p : M \to S^4 - \mathop{\mathrm{End}} M$, wher…
We prove the long-standing Montesinos conjecture that any closed oriented PL 4-manifold M is a simple covering of S^4 branched over a locally flat surface (cf [J M Montesinos, 4-manifolds, 3-fold covering spaces and ribbons, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 245 (1978) 453--467]). In fact, we show how to eliminate all the node singularities of the branching set of any simple 4-fold branched covering M \to S^4 arising from the representation theorem given in [R Piergallini, Four-manifolds as 4-fold branched covers of S^4, Topology 34 (1995) 497--508]. Namely, we construct a suitable cobordism between the…
A filling Dehn surface in a $3$-manifold $M$ is a generically immersed surface in $M$ that induces a cellular decomposition of $M$. Given a tame link $L$ in $M$ there is a filling Dehn sphere of $M$ that "trivializes" (\emph{diametrically splits}) it. This allows to construct filling Dehn surfaces in the coverings of $M$ branched over $L$. It is shown that one of the simplest filling Dehn spheres of $S^3$ (Banchoff's sphere) diametrically splits the trefoil knot. Filling Dehn spheres, and their Johansson diagrams, are constructed for the coverings of $S^3$ branched over the trefoil. The constr…
Braided embeddings are embeddings to a product disc bundle so the projection to the first factor is a branched cover. In this paper, we study which branched covers lift to braided embeddings, which is a generalization of the Borsuk-Ulam problem. We determine when a braided embedding in the complement of branch locus can be extended over the branch locus in smoothly (or locally flat piecewise linearly), and use it in conjunction with Hansen's criterion for lifting covers. We show that every branched cover over an orientable surface lifts to a codimension two braided embedding in the piecewise l…
A Seifert surgery is an integral surgery on a knot in S^3 producing a Seifert fiber space which may contain an exceptional fiber of index 0. The Seifert Surgery Network is a 1-dimensional complex whose vertices correspond to Seifert surgeries; its edges correspond to single twistings along "seiferters" or "annular pairs of seiferters". One problem of the network is whether there is a path from each vertex to a vertex on a torus knot, the most basic Seifert surgery. We give a method to find seiferters and annular pairs of seiferters for Seifert surgeries obtained by taking two--fold branched co…
A canonical branched covering over each sufficiently good simplicial complex is constructed. Its structure depends on the combinatorial type of the complex. In this way, each closed orientable 3-manifold arises as a branched covering over the 3-sphere from some triangulation of S^3. This result is related to a theorem of Hilden and Montesinos. The branched coverings introduced admit a rich theory in which the group of projectivities plays a central role.
In this paper we show that all 3-manifolds of a family introduced by M. J. Dunwoody are cyclic coverings of lens spaces (eventually $\bf S^3$), branched over genus one 1-bridge knots. As a consequence, we give a positive answer to the Dunwoody conjecture that all the elements of a wide subclass are cyclic coverings of $\bf S^3$ branched over a knot. Moreover, we show that all branched cyclic coverings of a 2-bridge knot belong to this subclass; this implies that the fundamental group of each branched cyclic covering of a 2-bridge knot admits a geometric cyclic presentation.
We study canonical decompositions of postcritically finite branched coverings of the 2-sphere, as defined by K. Pilgrim. We show that every hyperbolic cycle in the decomposition does not have a Thurston obstruction. It is thus Thurston equivalent to a rational map.
In a paper published in 2002, the author gave a criterion to determine whether there is a fiber-preserving branched covering between two given orientable Seifert manifolds with orientable bases. Here we supply some details of the proof of two claims in that paper. We give an explicit construction of fiber-preserving branched covering between two Seifert fibered solid tori when their Seifert invariants satisfy certain relation, and we show the factorability of fiber-preserving branched coverings between two closed Seifert manifolds.

In the paper, we consider the harmonic maps between surfaces $Σ$ and $S$ in the homotopy class of a (branched) covering map $u_0$. We prove the uniqueness of critical points of energy function and the injectivity of Hopf differential if $u_0$ is a covering map. On the other hand, if $u_0$ is a branched covering, we show that the uniqueness of critical points fails if $u_0$ is a non-simple branched covering, and prove the injectivity of Hopf differential $Φ:\mc{T}(S)\to \op{QD}(Σ,g)$ when $g=[u_0^* h]$ for some hyperbolic metric $h$ on $S$.
Using the covering involution on the double branched cover of the three-sphere branched along a knot, and adapting ideas of Hendricks-Manolescu and Hendricks-Hom-Lidman, we define new knot invariants and apply them to deduce novel linear independence results in the smooth concordance group of knots.
For a given branched covering between closed connected surfaces, there are several easy relations one can establish between the Euler characteristics of the surfaces, their orientability, the total degree, and the local degrees at the branching points, including the classical Riemann-Hurwitz formula. These necessary relations have been khown to be also sufficient for the existence of the covering except when the base surface is the sphere (and when it is the projective plane, but this case reduces to the case of the sphere). If the base surface is the sphere, many exceptions are known to occur…
For the existence of a branched covering Sigma~ --> Sigma between closed surfaces there are easy necessary conditions in terms of chi(Sigma~), chi(Sigma), orientability, the total degree, and the local degrees at the branching points. A classical problem dating back to Hurwitz asks whether these conditions are also sufficient. Thanks to the work of many authors, the problem remains open only when Sigma is the sphere, in which case exceptions to existence are known to occur. In this paper we describe new infinite series of exceptions, in particular previously unknown exceptions with Sigma~ not …
We study global injectivity of proper branched coverings defined on the Euclidean $n$-ball in the case when the branch set is compact. In particular we show that such mappings are homeomorphisms when $n=3$ or when the branch set is empty. This proves the corresponding cases of a question of Vuorinen from [Vuo79].

We show that for any n > 3 there exists an equivalence functor from the category of n-fold connected simple coverings of B^3 x [0, 1] branched over ribbon surface tangles up to certain local ribbon moves, to the category Chb^{3+1} of orientable relative 4-dimensional 2-handlebody cobordisms up to 2-deformations. As a consequence, we obtain an equivalence theorem for simple coverings of S^3 branched over links, which provides a complete solution to the long-standing Fox-Montesinos covering moves problem. This last result generalizes to coverings of any degree results by the second author and Ap…
We show that simple coverings of B^4 branched over ribbon surfaces up to certain local ribbon moves bijectively represent orientable 4-dimensional 2-handlebodies up to handle sliding and addition/deletion of cancelling handles. As a consequence, we obtain an equivalence theorem for simple coverings of S^3 branched over links, in terms of local moves. This result generalizes to coverings of any degree results by the second author and Apostolakis, concerning respectively the case of degree 3 and 4. We also provide an extension of our equivalence theorem to possibly non-simple coverings of S^3 br…
We identify branched coverings (continuous open surjections p:Y->X of Hausdorff spaces with uniformly bounded number of pre-images) with Hilbert C*-modules C(Y) over C(X) and with faithful unital positive conditional expectations E:C(Y)->C(X) topologically of index-finite type. The case of non-branched coverings corresponds to projective finitely generated modules and expectations (algebraically) of index-finite type. This allows to define non-commutative analogues of (branched) coverings.
We develop a method to show the fundamental group of the double branched covering of a link is not left-orderable by introducing the notion of the coarse presentation. As in the usual group presentations, a coarse presentation is given by a set of generators and relations, but inequalities are allowed as relations. By using coarse presentation, we give a family of links whose double branched covering has the non-left-orderable fundamental group. Our family of links includes many known examples and new examples.
For any $n>1$, we construct examples branched Galois coverings from $M$ to the nth projective space ${\mathbb P}^n$ where $M$ is one of $({\mathbb P}^1)^n$, ${\mathbb C}^n$ or $(B_1)^n$, and $B_1$ is the 1-ball. In terms of orbifolds, this amounts to giving examples of orbifolds over ${\mathbb P}^n$ uniformized by $M$.We also discuss the related "orbifold braid groups".
In this paper we study the homeomorphisms of the disk that are liftable with respect to a simple branched covering. Since any such homeomorphism maps the branch set of the covering onto itself and liftability is invariant up to isotopy fixing the branch set, we are dealing in fact with liftable braids. We prove that the group of liftable braids is finitely generated by liftable powers of half-twists around arcs joining branch points. A set of such generators is explicitly determined for the special case of branched coverings from the disk to the disk. As a preliminary result we also obtain the…
We construct branched double coverings by certain direct products of manifolds for connected sums of copies of sphere bundles over the 2-sphere. As an application we answer a question of Kotschick and Loeh up to dimension five. More precisely, we show that: (1) every simply connected, closed four-manifold admits a branched double covering by a product of the circle with a connected sum of copies of $S^2 \times S^1$, followed by a collapsing map; (2) every simply connected, closed five-manifold admits a branched double covering by a product of the circle with a connected sum of copies of $S^3 \…
Let M be a smooth 4-manifold which admits a relatively minimal hyperelliptic genus h Lefschetz fibration over the 2-sphere. If all of the vanishing cycles for this fibration are nonseparating curves, then we show that M is a 2-fold cover of a 2-sphere bundle over the 2-sphere, branched over an embedded surface. If the collection of vanishing cycles for this fibration includes separating curves, we show that M is the relative minimalization of a Lefshetz fibration N, with N a 2-fold branched cover of a rational surface, branched over an embedded surface.
