We study the interplay of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in the course of electron-hole bound state formation for gapped solid state systems. Adapting the essentially approximation-free diagrammatic Monte Carlo method for the calculation of the optical response, we discuss the absorption of light in correlated electron-phonon systems for the whole interaction and phonon frequency regimes. The spectral function obtained by analytical continuation from the imaginary-time current-current correlation function demonstrates the dressing of excitons by a phonon cloud when the coupling the lattice degrees of freedom becomes increasingly important, where notable differences show up between the adiabatic and anti-adiabatic cases.
We develop an approximation-free Diagrammatic Monte Carlo technique to study fermionic particles interacting with each other simultaneously through both an attractive Coulomb potential and bosonic excitations of the underlying medium. Exemplarily we apply the method to the long-standing exciton-polaron problem and present numerically exact results for the wave function, ground-state energy, binding energy and effective mass of this quasiparticle. Focusing on the electron-hole pair bound-state formation, we discuss various limiting cases of a generic exciton-polaron model. The frequently used i…
In the context of the Holstein polaron problem it is shown that the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) corresponds to the summation of a special class of local diagrams in the skeleton expansion of the self-energy. In the real space representation, these local diagrams are characterized by the absence of vertex corrections involving phonons at different lattice sites. Such corrections vanish in the limit of infinite dimensions, for which the DMFT provides the exact solution of the Holstein polaron problem. However, for finite dimensional systems the accuracy of the DMFT is limited. In particul…
Exciton-polaron formation in one-dimensional lattice models with short or long-range carrier-phonon interaction is studied by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Depending on the relative sign of electron and hole-phonon coupling, the exciton-polaron size increases or decreases with increasing interaction strength. Quantum phonon fluctuations determine the (exciton-)polaron size and yield translation-invariant states at all finite couplings.
We present recent advances in understanding of the ground and excited states of the electron-phonon coupled systems obtained by novel methods of Diagrammatic Monte Carlo and Stochastic Optimization, which enable the approximation-free calculation of Matsubara Green function in imaginary times and perform unbiased analytic continuation to real frequencies. We present exact numeric results on the ground state properties, Lehmann spectral function and optical conductivity of different strongly correlated systems: Frohlich polaron, Rashba-Pekar exciton-polaron, pseudo Jahn-Teller polaron, exciton,…
We develop a Monte Carlo scheme for sampling series of Feynman diagrams for the proper self-energy which are self-consistently expressed in terms of renormalized particle propagators. This approach is used to solve the problem of a single spin-down fermion resonantly interacting with the Fermi gas of spin-up particles. Though the original series based on bare propagators are sign-alternating and divergent one can still determine the answer behind them by using two strategies (separately or together): (i) using proper series re-summation techniques, and (ii) introducing renormalized propagators…
We present the first approximation free diagrammatic Monte Carlo study of a lattice polaron interacting with an acoustic phonon branch through the deformation potential. Weak and strong coupling regimes are separated by a self-trapping region where quantum resonance between various possible lattice deformations is seen in the ground state properties, spectral function, and optical conductivity. The unique feature of such polaron is the interplay between long- and short wavelength acoustic vibrations creating a composite phonon cloud and leading to persistent self-trapping due to the existence …
We introduce a simple determinant diagrammatic Monte Carlo algorithm to compute the ground-state properties of a particle interacting with a Fermi sea through a zero-range interaction. The fermionic sign does not cause any fundamental problem when going to high diagram orders, and we reach order $N=30$. The data reveal that the diagrammatic series diverges exponentially as $(-1/R)^{N}$ with a radius of convergence $R<1$. Furthermore, on the polaron side of the polaron-dimeron transition, the value of $R$ is determined by a special class of three-body diagrams, corresponding to repeated scatter…
We introduce the first bold diagrammatic Monte Carlo approach to deal with polaron problems at finite density non-perturbatively, i.e., by including vertex corrections to high orders. Using Holstein model on a square lattice as a prototypical example, we demonstrate that our method is capable of providing accurate results in the thermodynamic limit in all regimes from renormalized Fermi-liquid to single polarons, across the non-adiabatic region where Fermi and Debye energies are of the same order of magnitude. By accounting for vertex corrections the accuracy of theoretical description is incr…
Exact theory of the finite-temperature spectral function of Fermi polarons with multiple particle-hole excitations: Diagrammatic theory versus Chevy ansatz
We consider dressing of excitonic properties by strongly correlated electrons in gate controlled twisted homo-bilayer heterostructures. The combined effect of the moiré potential and the Coulomb interaction supports the formation of different strongly correlated phases depending on the filling, including charge-ordered metals or incompressible insulators at integer occupation. The coupling between excitons and electrons results in a splitting of the excitonic resonance into an attractive and a repulsive polaron peak. Analyzing the properties of the exciton-polarons across the different phases …
Covalently linked acene dimers are of interest as candidates for intramolecular singlet fission. We report many-electron calculations of the energies and wavefunctions of the optical singlets, the lowest triplet exciton and the triplet-triplet biexciton, as well as the final states of excited state absorptions from these states in a family of phenyl-linked pentacene dimers. While it is difficult to distinguish between the triplet and the triplet-triplet from their transient absorptions in the 500-600 nm region, by comparing theoretical transient absorption spectra against published and unpubli…

The polaron optical conductivity is derived within the strong-coupling expansion, which is asymptotically exact in the strong-coupling limit. The polaron optical conductivity band is provided by the multiphonon optical transitions. The polaron optical conductivity spectra calculated within our analytic strong-coupling approach and the numerically accurate Diagrammatic Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) data are in a good agreement with each other at large $α\gtrapprox 9$.

We present a novel method for precise numerical solution of the irreducible two-body problem and apply it to excitons in solids. The approach is based on the Monte Carlo simulation of the two-body Green function specified by Feynman's diagrammatic expansion. Our method does not rely on the specific form of the electron and hole dispersion laws and is valid for any attractive electron-hole potential. We establish limits of validity of the Wannier (large radius) and Frenkel (small radius) approximations, present accurate data for the intermediate radius excitons, and give evidence for the charge…
We use the approximation-free Bold Diagrammatic Monte Carlo technique to study the effects of a finite dispersion of the optical phonon mode on the properties of the Holstein polaron, especially its effective mass. For weak electron-phonon coupling the effect is very small, but it becomes significant for moderate and large electron-phonon coupling. The effective mass is found to increase (decrease) if the phonon dispersion has a negative (positive) curvature at the centre of the Brillouin zone.
The Momentum Average approximation is used to derive a new kind of non-perturbational analytical expression for the optical conductivity (OC) of a Holstein polaron at zero temperature. This provides insight into the shape of the OC, by linking it to the structure of the polaron's phonon cloud. Our method works in any dimension, properly enforces selection rules, can be systematically improved, and also generalizes to momentum-dependent couplings. Its accuracy is demonstrated by a comparison with the first detailed set of three-dimensional numerical OC results, obtained using the approximation-…
We study theoretically a fundamental issue in solids: the evolution of the optical spectra of polaron as the electron-phonon coupling increases. By comparing the exact results obtained by diagrammatic Monte Carlo method and the data got through exact diagonalization within an appropriate subspace of the phononic wavefunctions, the physical nature of the crossover from weak to strong coupling is revealed. The optical spectra are well understood by the quantum mechanical superposition of states with light and heavy phonon clouds corresponding to large and small polarons, respectively. It is also…
Polaron spectral functions are computed for highly doped graphene-on-substrate and other atomically thin graphitic systems using the diagrammatic Monte Carlo technique. The specific aim is to investigate the effects of interaction on spectral functions when the symmetry between sub-lattices of a honeycomb lattice has been broken by the substrate or ionicity, inducing a band gap. Introduction of electron-phonon coupling leads to several polaronic features, such as band-flattening and changes in particle lifetimes. At the K point, differences between energies on each sub-lattice increase with el…
We present a detailed numerical study of the one-dimensional Holstein model with a view to understanding the self-trapping process of electrons or excitons in crystals with short-range particle-lattice interactions. Applying a very efficient variational Lanczos method, we are able to analyze the ground-state properties of the system in the weak-- and strong-coupling, adiabatic and non-adiabatic regimes on lattices large enough to eliminate finite-size effects. In particular, we obtain the complete phase diagram and comment on the existence of a critical length for self-trapping in spatially re…

The elementary optical excitations in two dimensional semiconductors hosting itinerant electrons are attractive and repulsive polarons -- excitons that are dynamically screened by electrons. Exciton-polarons have hitherto been studied in translationally invariant degenerate Fermi systems. Here, we show that electronic charge order breaks the excitonic translational invariance and leads to a direct optical signature in the exciton-polaron spectrum. Specifically, we demonstrate that new optical resonances appear due to spatially modulated interaction between excitons and electrons in an incompre…
Excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) provide a paradigm of composite Boson in 2D system. This letter reports a photoluminescence and reflectance study of excitons in monolayer molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) with electrostatic gating. We observe the repulsive and attractive Fermi polaron modes of the band edge exciton, its excited state and the spin-off excitons. Our data validate the polaronic behavior of excitonic states in the system quantitatively where the simple three-particle trion model is insufficient to explain.
Following the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational principle, dynamics of a one-dimensional Holstein polaron is probed by employing the Davydov D2 Ansatz with two sets of variational parameters, one for each constituting particle in the exciton-phonon system, and a simplified variant of the Davydov D1 Ansatz, also known as the $\tilde{D}$ Ansatz, with an additional set of phonon displacement parameters. A close examination of variational outputs from the two trial states reveals fine details of the polaron structure and intricacies of dynamic exciton-phonon interactions. Superradiance cohe…
The diagrammatic Monte Carlo (Diag-MC) method is a numerical technique which samples the entire diagrammatic series of the Green's function in quantum many-body systems. In this work, we incorporate the flat histogram principle in the diagrammatic Monte method and we term the improved version "Flat Histogram Diagrammatic Monte Carlo" method. We demonstrate the superiority of the method over the standard Diag-MC in extracting the long-imaginary-time behavior of the Green's function, without incorporating any a priori knowledge about this function, by applying the technique to the polaron proble…

A path-integral representation is constructed for the Jahn-Teller polaron (JTP). It leads to a perturbation series that can be summed exactly by the diagrammatic Quantum Monte Carlo technique. The ground-state energy, effective mass, spectrum and density of states of the three-dimensional JTP are calculated with no systematic errors. The band structure of JTP interacting with dispersionless phonons, is found to be similar to that of the Holstein polaron. The mass of JTP increases exponentially with the coupling constant. At small phonon frequencies, the spectrum of JTP is flat at large momenta…
We solve the problem of polaron localization on an attractive impurity by means of direct-space Diagrammatic Monte Carlo implemented for the system in the thermodynamic limit. In particular we determine the ground state phase diagram in dependence on the electron-phonon coupling and impurity potential strength for the whole phonon frequency range. Including the quantum phonon dynamics we find and characterize a new phase which is missing in the zero phonon-frequency limit (adiabatic approximation), where self-trapped polarons are not localized at shallow impurities. We predict and show that in…
We present numeric results for ground state and angle resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) for single hole in t-J model coupled to optical phonons. The systematic-error free diagrammatic Monte Carlo is employed where the Feynman graphs for the Matsubara Green function in imaginary time are summed up completely with respect to phonons variables, while magnetic variables are subjected to non-crossing approximation. We obtain that at electron-phonon coupling constants relevant for high Tc cuprates the polaron undergoes self-trapping crossover to strong coupling limit and theoretical ARPES demon…
Non-local, inhomogeneous and retarded response observed in experiments is reproduced by introducing the Inhomogeneous Momentum Average (IMA) method to study single polaron problems with disorder in the on-site potential and/or spatial variations of the electron-phonon couplings and/or phonon frequencies. We show that the electron-phonon coupling gives rise to an additional inhomogeneous, strongly retarded potential, which makes instant approximations questionable. The accuracy of IMA is demonstrated by comparison with results from the approximation free Diagrammatic Monte Carlo (DMC) method. I…
