We solve the problem of polaron localization on an attractive impurity by means of direct-space Diagrammatic Monte Carlo implemented for the system in the thermodynamic limit. In particular we determine the ground state phase diagram in dependence on the electron-phonon coupling and impurity potential strength for the whole phonon frequency range. Including the quantum phonon dynamics we find and characterize a new phase which is missing in the zero phonon-frequency limit (adiabatic approximation), where self-trapped polarons are not localized at shallow impurities. We predict and show that in the vicinity of the localization transition a region with a mixture of weak- and strong-coupling spectral response is realized.
In this paper we study an impurity in Bose-Einstein-Condensate system at $T=0K$ and suppose the contact forms for boson-boson and boson-impurity interactions. Using Bogoliubov theory and a further approximation corresponding to only think over the forward scattering of impurity by bosons, we derive a reduced Hamiltonian whose form is the same as the Fröhlich Hamiltonian for large polaron. By using Lee-Low-Pines (LLP) theory for large polaron, we obtain the effective mass of impurity, the phonon number carried by impurity and the energy related to the existence of impurity. In addition, we also…
The thermal behavior of a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chain doped by donor impurities was analyzed. The ground state of such a chain corresponds to the formation of a set of ferromagnetically correlated regions localized near impurities (bound magnetic polarons). At finite temperatures, the magnetic structure of the chain was calculated simultaneously with the wave function of a conduction electron bound by an impurity. The calculations were performed using an approximate variational method and a Monte Carlo simulation. Both these methods give similar results. The analysis of the tempera…
Low-temperature transport and magnetization measurements for the antiferromagnets SrMnO(3) and CaMnO(3) identify an impurity band of mobile states separated by energy E from electrons bound in Coulombic potentials. Very weak electric fields are sufficient to excite bound electrons to the impurity band, increasing the mobile carrier concentration by more than three orders of magnitude. The data argue against the formation of self-trapped magnetic polarons (MPs) predicted by theory, and rather imply that bound MPs become stable only for kT<<E.
Anderson models, based on quantum chemical studies of the molecule of U(C_8H_8)_2, are applied to investigate the problem of an U impurity in a metal. The special point here is that the U 5f-orbitals are divided into two subsets: an almost completely localized set and a considerably delocalized one. Due to the crystal field, both localized and delocalized U 5f-orbitals affect the low-energy physics. A numerical renormalization group study shows that every fixed point is characterized by a residual local spin and a phase shift. The latter changes between 0 and π/2, which indicates the competiti…
An extremely polarized mixture of an ultracold Fermi gas is expected to reduce to a Fermi polaron system, which consists of a single impurity immersed in the Fermi sea of majority atoms. By developing a many-body T -matrix theory, we investigate spectral properties of the polarized mixture in experimentally relevant regimes in which the system of finite impurity concentration at nonzero temperature is concerned. We explicitly demonstrate presence of polaron physics in the polarized limit and discuss effects of many polarons in an intermediate regime in a self-consistent manner. By analyzing th…
We study, at zero temperature, the dynamics of a single electron in a Holstein model augmented by site-diagonal, binary-alloy type disorder. The average over the phonon vacuum and the alloy configurations is performed within a generalized dynamical coherent potential approximation. We present numerical results for a Bethe lattice with infinite coordination number. In particular, we investigate, in the intermediate electron-phonon coupling regime, the spectral and diffusion properties in the vicinity of the high-energy edge of the lowest polaronic subband. To characterize the diffusion properti…
We consider the motion of a spin-1/2 impurity in a one-dimensional gas of spin-1/2 fermions. For antiferromagnetic interaction between the impurity and the fermions, the low temperature behavior of the system is governed by the two-channel Kondo effect, leading to the impurity becoming completely opaque to the spin excitations of the gas. As well as the known spectral signatures of the two-channel Kondo effect, we find that the low temperature mobility of the resulting `Kondo polaron' takes the universal form $μ\to \frac{3\hbar v_F^2}{2πk_B^2T^2}$, in sharp contrast to the spinless case where …
Using variational algorithm on an infinite Shastry-Sutherland (SS) lattice we show that the introduction of a static nonmagnetic impurity into a dimerized ground state leads to a formation of a small, localized spin polaron surrounding the impurity site. Due to a particular symmetry of the SS lattice, the polaron is extremely anisotropic with a short spatial extent. The presence of nonmagnetic impurities leads to a formation of pronounced in-gap peaks in the dynamical spin structure factor, which we attribute to the spin-doublet excitations of a single unpaired spin $S=1/2$ surrounded by tripl…
We analyze the properties of impurities immersed in a vortex lattice formed by ultracold bosons in the mean field quantum Hall regime. In addition to the effects of a periodic lattice potential, the impurity is dressed by collective modes with parabolic dispersion (Tkachenko modes). We derive the effective polaron model, which contains a marginal impurity-phonon interaction. The polaron spectral function exhibits a Lorentzian broadening for arbitrarily small wave vectors even at zero temperature, in contrast with the result for optical or acoustic phonons. The anomalous damping of Tkachenko po…
We consider the effects of single impurities on polarons in three-dimensions (3D) using a continuous time quantum Monte-Carlo algorithm. An exact treatment of the phonon degrees of freedom leads to a very efficient algorithm and we are able to compute the polaron dynamics on an infinite lattice using an auxiliary weighting scheme. The magnitude of the impurity potential, the electron-phonon coupling and the phonon frequency are varied. We determine the magnitude of the impurity potential required for polaron trapping. For small electron-phonon coupling the number of phonons increases dramatica…
Polaron quasiparticles are formed when a mobile impurity is coupled to the elementary excitations of a many-particle background. In the field of ultracold atoms, the study of the associated impurity problem has attracted a growing interest over the last fifteen years. Polaron quasiparticle properties are essential to our understanding of a variety of paradigmatic quantum many-body systems realized in ultracold atomic gases and in the solid state, from imbalanced Bose-Fermi and Fermi-Fermi mixtures to fermionic Hubbard models. In this topical review, we focus on the so-called repulsive polaron …
We study the spectrum of an impurity coupled to a Fermi sea (e.g., minority atom in an ultracold gas, exciton in a solid) by attraction strong enough to form a molecule/trion. We introduce a diagrammatic scheme which allows treating a finite mass impurity while reproducing the Fermi edge singularity in the immobile limit. For large binding energies the spectrum is characterized by a semi-coherent repulsive polaron and an incoherent molecule-hole continuum, which is the lowest-energy feature in the single-particle spectrum. The previously predicted attractive polaron seems not to exist for stro…
I discuss whether localization in the two dimensional continuum can be stable in the presence of short range interactions. I conclude that, for an impurity model of disorder, if the system is prepared below a critical temperature $T < T_c$, then perturbation theory about the localized phase converges almost everywhere. As a result, the system is at least asymptotically localized, and perhaps even truly many body localized, depending on how certain rare regions behave. Meanwhile, for $T > T_c$, perturbation theory fails to converge, which I interpret as interaction mediated delocalization. I ca…
The notion of a polaron, originally introduced in the context of electrons in ionic lattices, helps us to understand how a quantum impurity behaves when being immersed in and interacting with a many-body background. We discuss the impact of the impurities on the medium particles by considering feedback effects from polarons that can be realized in ultracold quantum gas experiments. In particular, we exemplify the modifications of the medium in the presence of either Fermi or Bose polarons. Regarding Fermi polarons we present a corresponding many-body diagrammatic approach operating at finite t…
For a mobile spin-1/2 impurity, coupled antiferromagnetically to a one-dimensional gas of fermions, perturbative ideas have been used to argue in favor of two-channel Kondo behavior of the impurity spin. Here we combine general considerations and extensive numerical simulations to show that the problem displays a novel quantum phase transition between two-channel and one-channel Kondo screening upon increasing the Kondo coupling. We construct a ground-state phase diagram and discuss the various non-trivial crossovers as well as possible experimental realizations.

We analyze the dynamics of Bose polarons in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance between the impurity and host atoms. We compute the radio-frequency absorption spectra for the case when the initial state of the impurity is non-interacting and the final state is strongly interacting. We compare results of different theoretical approaches including a single excitation expansion, a self-consistent T-matrix method, and a time-dependent coherent state approach. Our analysis reveals sharp spectral features arising from metastable states with several Bogoliubov excitations bound to the impurity atom.…
We study the bound states of a three-dimensional Holstein polaron near various kinds of single impurities, using the momentum average approximation. We show that the electron-phonon coupling is responsible for a strong renormalization of the impurity potential, resulting in an effective potential with significant retardation effects, which describes essential physics ignored by "instantaneous" approximations. The accuracy of our approximation is gauged by comparison with results from Diagrammatic Monte Carlo for the case of an impurity that modifies the on-site energy of the electron. We also …
