In their work on a sharp compactness theorem for the Yamabe problem, Khuri, Marques and Schoen apply a refined blow-up analysis (what we call `second order blow-up argument' in this article) to obtain highly accurate approximate solutions for the Yamabe equation. As for the conformal scalar curvature equation on S^n with n > 3, we examine the second order blow-up argument and obtain refined estimate for a blow-up sequence near a simple blow-up point. The estimate involves local effect from the Taylor expansion of the scalar curvature function, global effect from other blow-up points, and the balance formula as expressed in the Pohozaev identity in an essential way.
In this article, we provide a simple method for constructing dispersive blow-up solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Our construction mainly follows the approach in Bona, Ponce, Saut and Sparber [2]. However, we make use of the dispersive estimate to enjoy the smoothing effect of the Schrödinger propagator in the integral term appearing in Duhamel's formula. In this way, not only do we simplify the argument, but we also reduce the regularity requirement to construct dispersive blow-ups. In addition, we provide more examples of dispersive blow-ups by constructing solutions that blow…
Refined structures of blowup for non-collapsing maximal solution to a semilinear parabolic equation are studied. We will prove that the blowup set is empty for non-collapsing blowing-up in subcritical case, and all finite time non-collapsing blowing-up must be type II in critical case. When p>p_S=(N+2)/(N-2) for N>=3, the Hausdorff dimension of the blowup set for maximal solution whose energy is non-collapsing is shown to be no greater than N-2-4/(p-1), which answers a question proposed in [7] positively. At the end of this paper, we also present some new examples of collapsing and non-collaps…
We consider $u(x,t)$, a solution of $\partial_tu = Δu + |u|^{p-1}u$ which blows up at some time $T > 0$, where $u:\mathbb{R}^N \times[0,T) \to \mathbb{R}$, $p > 1$ and $(N-2)p < N+2$. Define $S \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ to be the blow-up set of $u$, that is the set of all blow-up points. Under suitable nondegeneracy conditions, we show that if $S$ contains a $(N-\ell)$-dimensional continuum for some $\ell \in \{1,\dots, N-1\}$, then $S$ is in fact a $\mathcal{C}^2$ manifold. The crucial step is to derive a refined asymptotic behavior of $u$ near blow-up. In order to obtain such a refined behavior,…
We consider in this paper a perturbation of the standard semilinear heat equation by a term involving the space derivative and a non-local term. In some earlier works [1, 2], we constructed a solution $u$ for that equation such that $u$ and $\nabla u$ both blow up at the origin and only there. We also gave the final blow-up profile. In this paper, we refine our construction method in order to get a sharper estimate on the gradient at blow-up.
In this paper, we consider a blow-up solution for the complex-valued semilinear wave equation with power non-linearity in one space dimension. We show that the set of non characteristic points $I_0$ is open and that the blow-up curve is of class $C^{1,μ_0}$ and the phase $θ$ is $C^{μ_0}$ on this set. In order to prove this result, we introduce a Liouville Theorem for that equation.
In this article we study a normalised double obstacle problem with polynomial obstacles $ p^1\leq p^2$ under the assumption that $ p^1(x)=p^2(x)$ iff $ x=0$. In dimension two we give a complete characterisation of blow-up solutions depending on the coefficients of the polynomials $p^1, p^2$. In particular, we see that there exists a new type of blow-ups, that we call double-cone solutions since the coincidence sets $\{u=p^1\}$ and $\{u=p^2\}$ are cones with a common vertex. We prove the uniqueness of blow-up limits, and analyse the regularity of the free boundary in dimension two. In particula…
For the prescribed scalar curvature equation on $S^n$ ($n \ge 6$), we consider the situation where the number of bubbles tends to infinity in the Lyapunov-Schmidt (finite dimension) reduction method. In an outstanding paper by Wei and Yan, the special case where the bubbles are arranged "evenly" (close to a great circle) is considered. Here we are concerned with the generic scenario, where the bubbles are "planted" (arranged) in general position, in adjacent to the critical points of the prescribed function. The main interest of this article is to extract key information in the finite dimensio…
In general, solutions $u$ to \[ Δu(\mathbf{x})=f(\mathbf{x})χ_{\{u>ψ\}} \] are not $C^{1,1}$, even for $f$ smooth and $ψ(\mathbf{x})\equiv0$. Points around which $u$ is not $C^{1,1}$ are called singular points, and the set of all such points, the singular set. In this article we analyze blow-ups, the free boundary $\partial\{u>ψ\}$, and the singular set close to singular points $\mathbf{x}^{0}=(x^{0},y^{0},z^{0})$ in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. We show that blow-ups of the form \[ \lim_{j\to\infty}\frac{u(r_{j}\cdot+\mathbf{x}^{0})}{\|u\|_{L^{\infty}(B_{r_{j}}(\mathbf{x}^{0}))}}, \] $r_{j}\to0^{+}$ are …
We study the regularity of the interface between the disjoint supports of a pair of nonnegative subharmonic functions. The portion of the interface where the Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman (ACF) monotonicity formula is asymptotically positive forms an $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$-rectifiable set. Moreover, for $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$-a.e. such point, the two functions have unique blowups, i.e. their Lipschitz rescalings converge in $W^{1,2}$ to a pair of nondegenerate truncated linear functions whose supports meet at the approximate tangent plane. The main tools used include the Naber-Valtorta framework and our r…
We consider the nonlinear half laplacian heat equation $$ u_t+(-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} u-|u|^{p-1}u=0,\quad \mathbb{R}^n\times (0, T). $$ We prove that all blows-up are type I, provided that $n \leq 4$ and $ 1<p<p_{*} (n)$ where $ p_{*} (n)$ is an explicit exponent which is below $\frac{n+1}{n-1}$, the critical Sobolev exponent. Central to our proof is a Giga-Kohn type monotonicity formula for half laplacian and a Liouville type theorem for self-similar nonlinear heat equation. This is the first instance of a monotonicity formula at the level of the nonlocal equation, without invoking the extension …
We study the Keller-Segel model of chemotaxis and develop a composite particle-grid numerical method with adaptive time stepping which allows us to accurately resolve singular solutions. The numerical findings (in two dimensions) are then compared with analytical predictions regarding formation and interaction of singularities obtained via analysis of the stochastic differential equations associated with the Keller-Segel model.
In Kenig and Toro's two-phase free boundary problem, one studies how the regularity of the Radon-Nikodym derivative $h= dω^-/dω^+$ of harmonic measures on complementary NTA domains controls the geometry of their common boundary. It is now known that $\log h \in C^{0,α}(\partial Ω)$ implies that pointwise the boundary has a unique blow-up, which is the zero set of a homogeneous harmonic polynomial. In this note, we give examples of domains with $\log h \in C(\partial Ω)$ whose boundaries have points with non-unique blow-ups. Philosophically the examples arise from oscillating or rotating a blow…
We consider the supercooled Stefan problem, which captures the freezing of a supercooled liquid, in one space dimension. A probabilistic reformulation of the problem allows to define global solutions, even in the presence of blow-ups of the freezing rate. We provide a complete description of such solutions, by relating the temperature distribution in the liquid to the regularity of the ice growth process. The latter is shown to transition between (i) continuous differentiability, (ii) Holder continuity, and (iii) discontinuity. In particular, in the second regime we rediscover the square root…
We consider the energy critical semilinear heat equation $$ \left\{\begin{aligned} &\partial_t u-Δu =|u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}}u &\mbox{in } {\mathbb R}^n\times(0,T),\\ &u(x,0)=u_0(x), \end{aligned}\right. $$ where $ n\geq 3$, $u_0\in L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)$, and $T\in {\mathbb R}^+$ is the first blow up time. We prove that if $ n \geq 7$ and $ u_0 \geq 0$, then any blowup must be of Type I, i.e., \[\|u(\cdot, t)\|_{L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)}\leq C(T-t)^{-\frac{1}{p-1}}.\] A similar result holds for bounded convex domains. The proof relies on a reverse inner-outer gluing mechanism and delicate analysi…
The paper is devoted to the analysis of the blow-ups of derivatives, gradient catastrophes and dynamics of mappings of $\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^n$ associated with the $n$-dimensional homogeneous Euler equation. Several characteristic features of the multi-dimensional case ($n>1$) are described. Existence or nonexistence of blow-ups in different dimensions, boundness of certain linear combinations of blow-up derivatives and the first occurrence of the gradient catastrophe are among of them. It is shown that the potential solutions of the Euler equations exhibit blow-up derivatives in any di…
