The evolution of the X-ray emitting gas mass fraction ($f_{gas}$) in massive galaxy clusters can be used as an independent cosmological tool to probe the expansion history of the Universe. Its use, however, depends upon a crucial quantity, i.e., the depletion factor $γ$, which corresponds to the ratio by which $f_{gas}$ is depleted with respect to the universal baryonic mean. This quantity is not directly observed and hydrodynamical simulations performed in a specific cosmological model (e.g., a flat $Λ$CDM cosmology) have been used to calibrate it. In this work, we obtain for the first time self-consistent observational constraints on the gas depletion factor combining 40 X-ray emitting gas mass fraction measurements and luminosity distance measurements from type Ia supernovae. Using Gaussian Processes to reconstruct a possible redshift evolution of $γ$, we find no evidence for such evolution, which confirms the current results from hydrodynamical simulations. Moreover, our constraints on $γ$ can be seen as a data prior for cosmological analyses on different cosmological models. The current measurements are systematic limited, so future improvements will depend heavily on a better mass calibration of galaxy clusters and their measured density profiles.
In this letter, we discuss a new method to probe the redshift evolution of the gas depletion factor, i.e. the ratio by which the gas mass fraction of galaxy clusters is depleted with respect to the universal mean of baryon fraction. The dataset we use for this purpose consists of 40 gas mass fraction measurements measured at $r_{2500}$ using Chandra X-ray observations, strong gravitational lensing sub-samples obtained from SLOAN Lens ACS + BOSS Emission-line Lens Survey (BELLS) + Strong Legacy Survey SL2S + SLACS. For our analysis, the validity of cosmic distance duality relation is assumed. W…
The gas depletion factor $γ(z)$, i.e., the average ratio of the gas mass fraction to the cosmic mean baryon fraction of galaxy clusters, plays a very important role in the cosmological application of the gas mass fraction measurements. In this paper, using the newest catalog of 182 galaxy clusters detected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) Polarization experiment, we investigate the possible redshift evolution of $γ(z)$ through a new cosmology-independent method. The method is based on non-parametric reconstruction using the measurements of Hubble parameters from cosmic chronometers. Un…
In this paper, we propose a new method to obtain the depletion factor $γ(z)$, the ratio by which the measured baryon fraction in galaxy clusters is depleted with respect to the universal mean. We use exclusively galaxy cluster data, namely, X-ray gas mass fraction ($f_{gas}$) and angular diameter distance measurements from Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect plus X-ray observations. The galaxy clusters are the same in both data set and the non-isothermal spherical double $β$-model was used to describe their electron density and temperature profiles. In order to compare our results with those from recent…
Galaxy cluster number count has been proven to be a powerful cosmological probe. However, cosmological constraints established with galaxy cluster number count are highly dependent on the calibration of the mass-observable relations. Thanks to its nearly mass independence the specific mass accretion rate of galaxy clusters is nearly insensitive to the calibration of mass-observable relations. The study of galaxy cluster number count evolution allows to probe the galaxy cluster mass accretion history in the context of an homogenous Universe. In this paper, we use relative abundance matching to …
We determine the error introduced in a joint halo model analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering observables when adopting the standard approximation of linear halo bias. Considering the Kilo-Degree Survey, we forecast that ignoring the non-linear halo bias would result in up to 5$σ$ offsets in the recovered cosmological parameters describing structure growth, $S_8$, and the matter density parameter, $Ω_{\mathrm{m}}$. We include the scales $10^{-1.3}<r_{\rm{p}} \ / h^{-1}\, \mathrm{Mpc}<10$ in the data vector, and the direction of these offsets are shown to depend on the freedom…
Fast Radio Bursts (hereafter FRBs) can be used in cosmology by studying the Dispersion Measure (hereafter DM) as a function of redshift. The large scale structure of matter distribution is regarded as a major error budget for such application. Using optical galaxy and dispersion measure mocks built from N-body simulations, we have shown that the galaxy number density can be used as a tracer for large scale electron density and help improve the measurement of DM as a function of redshift. We have shown that, using the line-of-sight galaxy number counts within 1' around the given localized FRB s…
Cosmological Constraints from a Combination of Galaxy Clustering & Lensing -- II. Fisher Matrix Analysis
We present cosmological parameter constraints based on a joint modeling of galaxy-lensing cross correlations and galaxy clustering measurements in the SDSS, marginalizing over small-scale modeling uncertainties using mock galaxy catalogs, without explicit modeling of galaxy bias. We show that our modeling method is robust to the impact of different choices for how galaxies occupy dark matter halos and to the impact of baryonic physics (at the $\sim2\%$ level in cosmological parameters) and test for the impact of covariance on the likelihood analysis and of the survey window function on the the…
Constraint on the cosmological f(R) model from the multipole power spectrum of the SDSS luminous red galaxy sample and prospects for a future redshift survey
One of the cornerstones of general relativity is the equivalence principle. However, the validity of the equivalence principle has only been established on solar system scales for standard matter fields; this result cannot be assumed to hold for the non-standard matter fields that dominate the gravitational dynamics on cosmological scales. Here we show how the equivalence principle may be tested on cosmological scales for non-standard matter fields using the odd multipoles of the galaxy cross-power spectrum and bispectrum. This test makes use of the imprint on the galaxy cross-power spectrum a…

The gas mass fraction in galaxy clusters has been widely used to determine cosmological parameters. This method assumes that the ratio of the cluster gas mass fraction to the cosmic baryon fraction ($γ(z)$) is constant as a function of redshift. In this work, we look for a time evolution of $γ(z)$ at $R_{500}$ by using both the SPT-SZ and Planck Early SZ (ESZ) cluster data, in a model-independent fashion without any explicit dependence on the underlying cosmology. For this calculation, we use a non-parametric functional form for the Hubble parameter obtained from Gaussian Process regression us…
Next generation large scale surveys probe the nonlinear regime with high resolution. Making viable cosmological inferences based on these observations requires accurate theoretical modeling of the mildly nonlinear regime. In this work we investigate the sensitivity of cosmological parameter measurements from future probes of galaxy clustering to the choice of nonlinear prescription up to $k_{\rm max}=0.3~h~\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$. In particular, we calculate the induced parameter bias when the mildly nonlinear regime is modeled by the Halofit fitting scheme. We find significant ($\sim5σ$) bias for some…

We present a mitigation strategy to reduce the impact of non-linear galaxy bias on the joint `$3 \times 2 $pt' cosmological analysis of weak lensing and galaxy surveys. The $Ψ$-statistics that we adopt are based on Complete Orthogonal Sets of E/B Integrals (COSEBIs). As such they are designed to minimise the contributions to the observable from the smallest physical scales where models are highly uncertain. We demonstrate that $Ψ$-statistics carry the same constraining power as the standard two-point galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing statistics, but are significantly less sensitive t…
We present a deep machine learning (ML)-based technique for accurately determining $σ_8$ and $Ω_m$ from mock 3D galaxy surveys. The mock surveys are built from the AbacusCosmos suite of $N$-body simulations, which comprises 40 cosmological volume simulations spanning a range of cosmological models, and we account for uncertainties in galaxy formation scenarios through the use of generalized halo occupation distributions (HODs). We explore a trio of ML models: a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN), a power-spectrum-based fully connected network, and a hybrid approach that merges the two to co…
We assess the performance of a perturbation theory inspired method for inferring cosmological parameters from the joint measurements of galaxy-galaxy weak lensing ($ΔΣ$) and the projected galaxy clustering ($w_{\rm p}$). To do this, we use a wide variety of mock galaxy catalogs constructed based on a large set of $N$-body simulations that mimic the Subaru HSC-Y1 and SDSS galaxies, and apply the method to the mock signals to address whether to recover the underlying true cosmological parameters in the mocks. We find that, as long as the appropriate scale cuts, $12$ and $8~h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ for $…
Cluster strong lensing cosmography is a promising probe of the background geometry of the Universe and several studies have emerged, thanks to the increased quality of observations using space and ground-based telescopes. For the first time, we use a sample of five cluster strong lenses to measure the values of cosmological parameters and combine them with those from classical probes. In order to assess the degeneracies and the effectiveness of strong-lensing cosmography in constraining the background geometry of the Universe, we adopt four cosmological scenarios. We find good constraining pow…
In this paper, we implement a new method to test the invariance of the speed of light ($c$) as a function of redshift, by combining the measurements of galaxy cluster gas mass fraction, $H(z)$ from cosmic chronometers, and Type-Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). In our analyses, we consider both a constant depletion factor (which corresponds to the ratio by which the cluster gas mass fraction is depleted with respect to the universal baryonic mean) and one varying with redshift. We also consider the influence of different $H_0$ estimates on our results. We look for a variation of $c$, given by $c(z)=c_0(…
We measure for the first time the outermost edges of the Milky Way (MW) halo in terms of the depletion and turnaround radii. The inner depletion radius, $r_\mathrm{id}$, identified at the location of maximum infall velocity, separates a growing halo from the draining environment, while the turnaround radius, $r_\mathrm{ta}$, marks the outermost edge of infalling material towards the halo, both of which are located well outside the virial radius. Using the motions of nearby dwarf galaxies within $3\mathrm{Mpc}$, we obtain a marginal detection of the infall zone around the MW with a maximum velo…
We discover a linear relation between two sets of galaxy-lensing cross-correlations. This linear relation holds, as long as light follows the geodesic and the metric is Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW). Violation of the cosmological principle (and equivalently the FLRW metric) will break this linear relation. Therefore it provides a powerful test of the cosmological principle, based on direct observables and relied on no specific cosmological models. We demonstrate that stage IV galaxy surveys and CMB-S4 experiments will be able to test this linear relation stringently and therefore …
Over the last decades, cosmological simulations of galaxy formation have been instrumental for advancing our understanding of structure and galaxy formation in the Universe. These simulations follow the non-linear evolution of galaxies modeling a variety of physical processes over an enormous range of scales. A better understanding of the physics relevant for shaping galaxies, improved numerical methods, and increased computing power have led to simulations that can reproduce a large number of observed galaxy properties. Modern simulations model dark matter, dark energy, and ordinary matter in…
Inferring the values and uncertainties of cosmological parameters in a cosmology model is of paramount importance for modern cosmic observations. In this paper, we use the simulation-based inference (SBI) approach to estimate cosmological constraints from a simplified galaxy cluster observation analysis. Using data generated from the Quijote simulation suite and analytical models, we train a machine learning algorithm to learn the probability function between cosmological parameters and the possible galaxy cluster observables. The posterior distribution of the cosmological parameters at a give…
Compact star formation appears to be generally common in dusty star-forming galaxies (SFGs). However, its role in the framework set by the scaling relations in galaxy evolution remains to be understood. In this work we follow up on the galaxy sample from the GOODS-ALMA 2.0 survey, an ALMA blind survey at 1.1mm covering a continuous area of 72.42arcmin$^2$ using two array configurations. We derived physical properties, such as star formation rates, gas fractions, depletion timescales, and dust temperatures for the galaxy sample built from the survey. There exists a subset of galaxies that exhib…
