The present paper discusses results of a statistical study of the characteristics of coronal hole (CH) rotation in order to find connections to the internal rotation of the Sun. The goal is to measure CH rotation rates and study their distribution over latitude and their area sizes. In addition, the CH rotation rates are compared with the solar photospheric and inner layer rotational profiles. We study coronal holes observed within $\pm 60$ latitude and longitude degrees from the solar disc centre during the time span from the 1 January 2013 to 20 April 2015, which includes the extended peak of solar cycle 24.We used data created by the Spatial Possibilistic Clustering Algorithm (SPoCA), which provides the exact location and characterisation of solar coronal holes using SDO=AIA 193 Å channel images. The CH rotation rates are measured with four-hour cadence data to track variable positions of the CH geometric centre. North-south asymmetry was found in the distribution of coronal holes: about 60 percent were observed in the northern hemisphere and 40 percent were observed in the southern hemisphere. The smallest and largest CHs were present only at high latitudes. The average sidereal rotation rate for 540 examined CHs is $13:86 (\pm 0:05)$ degrees/d. Conclusions. The latitudinal characteristics of CH rotation do not match any known photospheric rotation profile. The CH angular velocities exceed the photospheric angular velocities at latitudes higher than 35-40 degrees. According to our results, the CH rotation profile perfectly coincides with tachocline and the lower layers of convection zone at around 0.71 $R_{\odot}$; this indicates that CHs may be linked to the solar global magnetic field, which originates in the tachocline region.
The relative Doppler velocities and linewidths in a polar coronal hole and the nearby quiet-Sun region have been obtained from the {\it Solar and Heliospheric Observatory} (SOHO)/{\it Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer} (CDS) observations using emission lines originating at different heights in the solar atmosphere from the lower transition region (TR) to the low solar corona. The observed region is separated into the network and the cell interior and the behavior of the above parameters were examined in the different regions. It has been found that the histograms of Doppler velocity and width ar…
Sunquakes are the surface signatures of acoustic waves in the Sun's interior that are produced by some but not all flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This paper explores a mechanism for sunquake generation by the magnetic field changes that occur during flares and CMEs, using MHD simulations with a semiempirical FAL-C atmosphere to demonstrate the generation of acoustic waves in the interior in response to changing magnetic tilt in the corona. We find that Alfven-sound resonance combined with the ponderomotive force produces acoustic waves in the interior with sufficient energy to match…
In this study, we investigate the spatial distribution of highly varying plasma composition around one of the largest sunspots of solar cycle 24. Observations of the photosphere, chromosphere, and corona are brought together with magnetic field modelling of the sunspot in order to probe the conditions which regulate the degree of plasma fractionation within loop populations of differing connectivities. We find that in the coronal magnetic field above the sunspot umbra, the plasma has photospheric composition. Coronal loops rooted in the penumbra contain fractionated plasma, with the highest le…
This paper reviews some of the many 3D numerical experiments of the emergence of magnetic fields from the solar interior and the subsequent interaction with the pre-existing coronal magnetic field. The models described here are idealized, in the sense that the internal energy equation only involves the adiabatic, Ohmic and viscous shock heating terms. However, provided the main aim is to investigate the dynamical evolution, this is adequate. Many interesting observational phenomena are explained by these models in a self-consistent manner.
A Comprehensive Simulation of Solar Wind Formation from the Solar Interior: Significant Cross-field Energy Transport by Interchange Reconnection near the Sun
Solar eruptions are usually associated with a variety of phenomena occurring in the low corona before, during, and after onset of eruption. Though easily visible in coronagraph observations, so-called stealth coronal mass ejections (CMEs) do not obviously exhibit any of these low-coronal signatures. The presence or absence of distinct low coronal signatures can be linked to different theoretical models to establish the mechanisms by which the eruption is initiated and driven. In this study, 40 CMEs without low coronal signatures, occurring in 2012, are identified. Their observational and kinem…
For the years 2001-2008, we use full-disk, SOHO/EIT 195 $Å$ calibrated images to determine latitudinal and day to day variations of the rotation rates of coronal holes. We estimate the weighted average of heliographic coordinates such as latitude and longitude from the central meridian on the observed solar disk. For different latitude zones between $40^{o}$ north - $40^{o}$ south, we compute rotation rates, and find that, irrespective of their area, number of days observed on the solar disk and latitudes, coronal holes rotate rigidly. Combined for all the latitude zones, we also find that cor…
We report observations of homologous coronal jets and their coronal mass ejections (CMEs) observed by instruments onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft. The homologous jets originated from a location with emerging and canceling magnetic field at the southeast edge of the giant active region (AR) of 2014 October, NOAA 12192. This AR produced in its interior many non-jet major flare eruptions (X and M class) that made no CME. During 20-27 October, in contrast to the major-flare eruptions in the interior, six of the homologous jets f…
In this paper we advocate for the idea that two seemingly unrelated mysteries with almost 90 year history -- the nature of dark matter and the million-degree solar corona -- may be but two sides of the same coin -- the axions of dark matter born in the core of the Sun and photons of axion origin in the million-degree solar corona, whose modulations are controlled by the anticorrelated modulation of the asymmetric dark matter (ADM) density in the solar interior.
The solar wind consists of continuous streams of charged particles that escape into the heliosphere from the Sun, and is split into fast and slow components, with the fast wind emerging from the interiors of coronal holes. Near the ecliptic plane, the fast wind from low-latitude coronal holes is interspersed with a highly structured slow solar wind, the source regions and drivers of which are poorly understood. Here we report extreme-ultraviolet observations that reveal a spatially complex web of magnetized plasma structures that persistently interact and reconnect in the middle corona. Corona…
Global coronal waves (CWs) and their interaction with coronal holes (CHs) result, among other effects, in the formation of reflected and transmitted waves. Observations of such events provide us with measurements of different CW parameters, such as phase speed and intensity amplitudes. However, several of these parameters are provided with only intermediate observational quality, other parameters, such as the phase speed of transmitted waves, can hardly be observed in general. We present a new method to estimate crucial CW parameters, such as density and phase speed of reflected as well as tra…
We present a rare observation of direct magnetic interaction between an activating filament and a coronal hole (CH). The filament was a quiescent one located at the northwest of the CH. It underwent a nonradial activation, during which filament material constantly fell and intruded into the CH. As a result, the CH was clearly destroyed by the intrusion. Brightenings appeared at the boundaries and in the interior of the CH, meanwhile, its west boundaries began to retreat and the area gradually shrank. It is noted that the CH went on shrinking after the end of the intrusion and finally disappear…
Thermal non-equilibrium (TNE) is a phenomenon that can occur in solar coronal loops when the heating is quasi-constant and highly-stratified. Under such heating conditions, coronal loops undergo cycles of evaporation and condensation. The recent observations of ubiquitous long-period intensity pulsations in coronal loops and their relationship with coronal rain have demonstrated that understanding the characteristics of TNE cycles is an essential step in constraining the circulation of mass and energy in the corona. We report unique observations with the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and th…
The nature of coronal wave fronts is deeply debated. They are observed in several wavelength bandpasses in spectra, and are frequently interpreted as magnetosonic waves propagating in the lower solar atmosphere. However, they can be attributed to the line of sight projection of the edges of coronal mass ejections. Therefore, the altitude estimation of these features is crucial to discriminate in favor of one of these two interpretations. We take advantage of a set of observations obtained from two different points of view by EUVI/SECCHI/STEREO on December, 7th 2007 to derive the time evolution…
Magnetic field couples the solar interior to the solar atmosphere, known as the corona. The coronal magnetic field is one of the crucial parameters which determines the coronal structures and regulates the space weather phenomena like flares, coronal mass ejections, energetic particle events, and solar winds. Measuring the magnetic field at middle and higher coronal heights are extremely difficult problem and to date there is no single measurement technique available to measure the higher coronal magnetic fields routinely. polarization measurements of the low-frequency radio emissions are an i…
We study the hydrogen Lyman emission in various solar features - now including Lyman-alpha observations free from geocoronal absorption - and investigate statistically the imprint of flows and of the magnetic field on the line profile and radiance distribution. As a new result, we found that in Lyman-alpha rasters locations with higher opacity cluster in the cell interior, while the network has a trend to flatter profiles. Even deeper self reversals and larger peak distances were found in coronal hole spectra. We also compare simultaneous Lyman-alpha and Lyman-beta profiles. There is an obviou…
In recent work, Antiochos and coworkers argued that the boundary between the open and closed field regions on the Sun can be extremely complex with narrow corridors of open flux connecting seemingly disconnected coronal holes from the main polar holes, and that these corridors may be the sources of the slow solar wind. We examine, in detail, the topology of such magnetic configurations using an analytical source surface model that allows for analysis of the field with arbitrary resolution. Our analysis reveals three important new results: First, a coronal hole boundary can join stably to the s…

A three-dimensional numerical experiment of the launching of a hot and fast coronal jet followed by several violent eruptions is analyzed in detail. These events are initiated through the emergence of a magnetic flux rope from the solar interior into a coronal hole. We explore the evolution of the emerging magnetically-dominated plasma dome surmounted by a current sheet and the ensuing pattern of reconnection. A hot and fast coronal jet with inverted-Y shape is produced that shows properties comparable to those frequently observed with EUV and X-Ray detectors. We analyze its 3D shape, its inho…
The structure of electric current and magnetic helicity in the solar corona is closely linked to solar activity over the 11-year cycle, yet is poorly understood. As an alternative to traditional current-free "potential field" extrapolations, we investigate a model for the global coronal magnetic field which is non-potential and time-dependent, following the build-up and transport of magnetic helicity due to flux emergence and large-scale photospheric motions. This helicity concentrates into twisted magnetic flux ropes, which may lose equilibrium and be ejected. Here, we consider how the magnet…
The chemical composition of solar and stellar atmospheres differs from that of their photospheres. Abundances of elements with low first ionization potential (FIP) are enhanced in the corona relative to high FIP elements with respect to the photosphere. This is known as the FIP effect and it is important for understanding the flow of mass and energy through solar and stellar atmospheres. We used spectroscopic observations from the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard the Hinode observatory to investigate the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of coronal plasma compos…
We examine resonantly damped kink modes in straight coronal slabs, paying special attention to the effects of the formulation for the transverse density distribution ("profile"). We work in the framework of pressure-less, gravity-free, resistive magnetohydrodynamics, and we adopt the dissipative-eigenmode perspective. The density profile is restricted to be one-dimensional, but nonetheless allowed to take a generic form characterized by a continuous transition layer connecting a uniform interior to a uniform exterior. A dispersion relation (DR) is derived in the thin-boundary limit, yielding a…
Coronal bright points (BPs) are small-scale luminous features seen in the solar corona. Quasi-periodic brightenings are frequently observed in the BPs and are generally linked with underneath magnetic flux changes. We study the dynamics of a BP seen in the coronal hole using the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) images, the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) magnetogram on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and spectroscopic data from the newly launched Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). The detailed analysis shows that the BP evolves throughout our observing period alo…
Evidence for the presence of ion cyclotron waves, driven by turbulence, at the boundaries of the current sheet is reported in this paper. By exploiting the full potential of the joint observations performed by Parker Solar Probe and the Metis coronagraph on board Solar Orbiter, local measurements of the solar wind can be linked with the large-scale structures of the solar corona. The results suggest that the dynamics of the current sheet layers generates turbulence, which in turn creates a sufficiently strong temperature anisotropy to make the solar-wind plasma unstable to anisotropy-driven in…
We present a 3D simulation of the dynamic emergence of a twisted magnetic flux tube from the top layer of the solar convection zone into the solar atmosphere and corona. It is found that after a brief initial stage of flux emergence during which the two polarities of the bipolar region become separated and the tubes intersecting the photosphere become vertical, significant rotational motion sets in within each polarity. The rotational motions of the two polarities are found to twist up the inner field lines of the emerged fields such that they change their orientation into an inverse configura…

Our aim is to study the photospheric flux distribution of a twisted flux tube that emerges from the solar interior. We also report on the eruption of a new flux rope when the emerging tube rises into a pre-existing magnetic field in the corona. To study the evolution, we use 3D numerical simulations by solving the time-dependent and resistive MHD equations. We qualitatively compare our numerical results with MDI magnetograms of emerging flux at the solar surface. We find that the photospheric magnetic flux distribution consists of two regions of opposite polarities and elongated magnetic tails…
Operating experience from fusion research shows how Spitzer resistivity may render ohmic heating in the chromosphere self limiting and thus serve to define the lower margin of the transition region. Its upper margin is at about 6000 K, where radiative cooling of He:H plasma decelerates sharply. The third and last stage in the proposed scheme is expansion into the tenuous plasma of space, which leads to the acceleration of ions to high energies, long recorded by spacecraft instruments. There is thus dynamic continuity all the way from the solar interior, the energy source for spinning columns i…
We update the SOHO/SWAN H Lyman-alpha brightness analysis to cover the 1996-2008 time interval. A forward model applied to the intensity maps provides the latitude and time dependence of the interstellar Hydrogen ionisation rate over more than a full solar cycle. The hydrogen ionisation, being almost entirely due to charge-exchange with solar wind ions, reflects closely the solar wind flux. Our results show that the solar wind latitudinal structure during the present solar minimum is strikingly different from the previous minimum, with a much wider slow solar wind equatorial belt which persist…
We examine the initiation of 10 coronal jet eruptions in quiet regions on the central disk, thereby avoiding near-limb spicule-forest obscuration of the slow-rise onset of the minifilament eruption. From the SDO/AIA 171A 12-second-cadence movie of each eruption, we (1) find and compare the start times of the minifilament's slow rise, the jet-base bright point, the jet-base interior brightening, and the jet spire, and (2) measure the minifilament's speed at the start and end of its slow rise. From (a) these data, (b) prior observations showing that each eruption was triggered by magnetic flux c…
It is shown that the holographic principle of quantum gravity (in the hologram of the Universe, and therefore in our Galaxy, and of course on the Sun!), in which the conflict between the theory of gravitation and quantum mechanics disappears, gives rise to the Babcock-Leighton holographic mechanism. Unlike the solar dynamo models, it generates a strong toroidal magnetic field by means of the thermomagnetic Ettingshausen-Nernst (EN) effect in the tachocline. Hence, it can be shown that with the help of the thermomagnetic EN effect, a simple estimate of the magnetic pressure of an ideal gas in t…
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and other solar eruptive phenomena can be physically linked by combining data from a multitude of ground-based and space-based instruments alongside models, however this can be challenging for automated operational systems. The EU Framework Package 7 HELCATS project provides catalogues of CME observations and properties from the Helio- spheric Imagers onboard the two NASA/STEREO spacecraft in order to track the evolution of CMEs in the inner heliosphere. From the main HICAT catalogue of over 2,000 CME detections, an automated algorithm has been developed to connec…
Two of the most widely observed and yet most puzzling features of the Sun's magnetic field are coronal loops that are smooth and laminar and prominences/filaments that are strongly sheared. These two features would seem to be quite unrelated in that the loops are near their minimum-energy current-free state, whereas filaments are regions of high magnetic stress and intense electric currents. We argue that, in fact, these two features are inextricably linked in that both are due to a single process: the injection of magnetic helicity into the corona by photospheric motions and the subsequent ev…
We present an analysis of the formation of atmospheric flux ropes in a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) solar flux emergence simulation. The simulation domain ranges from the top of the solar interior to the low corona. A twisted magnetic flux tube emerges from the solar interior and into the atmosphere where it interacts with the ambient magnetic field. By studying the connectivity of the evolving magnetic field, we are able to better understand the process of flux rope formation in the solar atmosphere. In the simulation, two flux ropes are produced as a result of flux emergence. Each has a differe…
Following previous investigations by Giordano and Mancuso [1] and Mancuso and Giordano [2, 3] on the differential rotation of the solar corona as obtained through the analysis of the intensity time series of the O VI 1032 Ang. spectral line observed by the UVCS/SOHO telescope during solar cycle 23, we analysed the possible influence of projection effects of extended coronal structures on the observed differential rotation rate in the ultraviolet corona. Through a simple geometrical model, we found that, especially at higher latitudes, the differential rotation may be less rigid than observed, …
Long-term forcing of Sun's coronal field, open flux and cosmic ray modulation potential during grand minima, maxima and regular activity phases by the solar dynamo mechanism
This review provides an introduction to the generation and evolution of the Sun's magnetic field, summarising both observational evidence and theoretical models. The eleven year solar cycle, which is well known from a variety of observed quantities, strongly supports the idea of a large-scale solar dynamo. Current theoretical ideas on the location and mechanism of this dynamo are presented. The solar cycle influences the behaviour of the global coronal magnetic field and it is the eruptions of this field that can impact on the Earth's environment. These global coronal variations can be modelle…
This Letter capitalizes on a unique set of total solar eclipse observations, acquired between 2006 and 2020, in white light, Fe XI 789.2 nm ($\rm T_{fexi}$ = $1.2 \pm 0.1$ MK) and Fe XIV 530.3 nm ($\rm T_{fexiv}$ = $ 1.8 \pm 0.1$ MK) emission, complemented by in situ Fe charge state and proton speed measurements from ACE/SWEPAM-SWICS, to identify the source regions of different solar wind streams. The eclipse observations reveal the ubiquity of open structures, invariably associated with Fe XI emission from $\rm Fe^{10+}$, hence a constant electron temperature, $\rm T_{c}$ = $\rm T_{fexi}$, in…
Where does solar flare energy come from? More specifically, assuming that the ultimate source of flare energy is mechanical energy in the convection zone, how is this translated into energy dissipated or stored in the corona? This question appears to have been given relatively little thought, as attention has been focussed predominantly on mechanisms for the rapid dissipation of coronal magnetic energy by way of MHD instabilities and plasma micro instabilities. We consider three types of flare theory: the steady state "photospheric dynamo" model in which flare power represents coronal dissipat…

We obtain lower limits on the amplitude of convective velocities in the deep solar convection zone based only on the observed properties of the differential rotation and meridional circulation together with simple and robust dynamical balances obtained from the fundamental MHD equations. The linchpin of the approach is the concept of gyroscopic pumping whereby the meridional circulation across isosurfaces of specific angular momentum is linked to the angular momentum transport by the convective Reynolds stress. We find that the amplitude of the convective velocity must be at least 30 m s$^{-1}…

As part of a joint observing program with NASA's IRIS mission, the NST observed active region NOAA 11810 in photospheric and chromospheric wavelengths. There has been considerable interest in magnetoacoustic waves in static, straight, field-aligned, one-dimensional equilibria where the exteriors of a magnetic slab are different between the two sides. We focus on trapped, transverse fundamental, oblique quasi-kink modes in pressureless setups where the density varies continuously from a uniform interior (with density $ρ_{\rm i}$) to a uniform exterior on either side (with density $ρ_{\rm L}$ or $ρ_{\rm R}$), assuming $ρ_{\rm L}\leρ_{\rm R}\leρ_{\rm i}$. The continuous structuring and oblique propagation make our study new relative to pertinent…
Many natural processes exhibit power-law behavior. The power-law exponent is linked to the underlying physical process and therefore its precise value is of interest. With respect to the energy content of nanoflares, for example, a power-law exponent steeper than 2 is believed to be a necessary condition to solve the enigmatic coronal heating problem. Studying power-law distributions over several orders of magnitudes requires sufficient data and appropriate methodology. In this paper we demonstrate the shortcomings of some popular methods in solar physics that are applied to data of typical sa…
