We update the SOHO/SWAN H Lyman-alpha brightness analysis to cover the 1996-2008 time interval. A forward model applied to the intensity maps provides the latitude and time dependence of the interstellar Hydrogen ionisation rate over more than a full solar cycle. The hydrogen ionisation, being almost entirely due to charge-exchange with solar wind ions, reflects closely the solar wind flux. Our results show that the solar wind latitudinal structure during the present solar minimum is strikingly different from the previous minimum, with a much wider slow solar wind equatorial belt which persists until at least the end of 2008. We compute absolute values of the in-ecliptic H ionisation rates using OMNI solar wind data and use them to calibrate our ionisation rates at all heliographic latitudes. We then compare the resulting fluxes with the synoptic LASCO/C2 electron densities at 6 solar radii. The two time-latitude patterns are strikingly similar over all the cycle. This comparison shows that densities at 6 solar radii can be used to infer the solar wind type close to its source, with high (resp. low) densities tracing the slow (resp. fast) solar wind, simply because the density reflects at which altitude occurs the acceleration. The comparison between the two minima suggests that the fast polar wind acceleration occurs at larger distance during the current minimum compared to the previous one. This difference, potentially linked to the magnetic field decrease or(and) the coronal temperature decrease should be reproduced by solar wind expansion models.
We investigate the long-period fluctuations in the brightness of the Sun as a star using the measurements of sunlight reflected from the planets (Jupiter, Mars) when the light hits the field of view of the LASCO C3 coronagraph (Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph Experiment).
Aims. A recent debate on the decade-long stability of the interstellar He flow vector, and in particular the flow longitude, has prompted us to check for any variability in the interstellar H flow vector as observed by the SWAN instrument on board SOHO. Methods. We used a simple model-independent method to determine the interstellar H flow longitude, based on the parallax effects induced on the Lyman-α intensity measured by SWAN following the satellite motion around the Sun. Results. Our results show that the interstellar H flow vector longitude does not vary significantly from an average valu…
We analyse of a set of radio rich (accompanied by type IV or II bursts) solar flares and their association with SOHO/LASCO Coronal Mass Ejections in the period 1998 2000. The intensity, impulsiveness and energetics of these events are investigated. We find that, on the average, flares associated both with type IIs and CMEs are more impulsive and more energetic than flares associated with type IIs only (without CME reported), as well as flares accompanied by type IV continua but not type II shocks. From the last two classes, flares with type II bursts (without CMEs reported) are the shortest in…
Helmet streamers are a prominent manifestation of magnetic structures with current sheets in the solar corona. These large-scale structures are regions with high plasma density, overlying active regions and filament channels. We investigate the three-dimensional (3D) structure of a coronal streamer, observed simultaneously by white-light coronagraphs from two vantage points near quadrature (SOHO/LASCO and STEREO/COR2). We design a forward model based on plausible assumptions about the 3D streamer structure taken from physical models (a plasma slab centered around a current sheet). The streamer…
We update two kinds of results obtained with the SWAN instrument on board SOHO. First, we use H cell data recorded in 2001 and derive the H flow direction in the same way we performed the study at solar minimum. We compare with the Helium flow and doing so we correct for the coordinate system change between the Ulysses and SOHO mission. The deflection plane we obtain is compatible with the previous result within error bars, confirming the predominant role of the interstellar magnetic field. Secondly, we extend the derivation of solar wind ionization temporal evolution as a function of heliolat…
A shower of secondary Cosmic Ray (CR) particles is produced at high altitudes in the Earth's atmosphere, so the primordial Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) are never directly measured outside the Earth magnetosphere and atmosphere. They approach the Earth and other planets in the complex pattern of rigidity's dependence, generally excluded by the magnetosphere. GCRs revealed by images of single nuclear reactions also called spallation events are described here. Such an event was seen on Nov. 29, 2015 using a unique LASCO C3 space coronagraph routine image taken during the Solar and Heliospheric Obs…
The variabile star Delta Scorpii is in conjunction with the Sun at the end of November each year. We studied its magnitude by averaging the observations of 28 Nov - 1 Dec from 1996 to 2013 using the coronograph LASCO C3 on-board the SOHO Satellite and we extended of four years, i.e. 25 % of the total light curve, back to 1996, with respect to the present AAVSO dataset on this star. The 0.2 magnitude scatters of the single measurements have been studied and the sources of such disturbances are vignetting and diffraction patterns from the coronograph. The new data collected on Delta Scorpii show…
Ultraviolet spectra of the extended solar corona have been routinely obtained by SoHO/UVCS since 1996. Sudden variations of spectral parameters are mainly due to the detection of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) crossing the instrumental slit. We present a catalog of CME ultraviolet spectra based upon a systematic search of events in the LASCO CME catalog, and we discuss their statistical properties. Our catalog includes 1059 events through the end of 2005, covering nearly a full solar cycle. It is online available at the URL http://solarweb.oato.inaf.it/UVCS_CME and embedded in the online LASCO …
We report on the properties of halo coronal mass ejections (HCMEs) in solar cycles 23 and 24. We compare the HCMEs properties between the corresponding phases (rise, maximum, and declining) in cycles 23 and 24 in addition to comparing those between the whole cycles. Despite the significant decline in the sunspot number (SSN) in cycle 24, which dropped by 46% with respect to cycle 23, the abundance of HCMEs is similar in the two cycles. The HCME rate per SSN is 44% higher in cycle 24. In the maximum phase, cycle-24 rate normalized to SSN increased by 127% while the SSN dropped by 43%. The sourc…
Observations of the Sun's surface suggest a nonuniform radiated flux as related to the presence of bright active regions and darker coronal holes. The variations of the FUV/EUV source radiation can be expected to affect the Lyman-alpha backscatter glow measured by spaceborne instruments. In particular, inferring the heliolatitudinal structure of the solar wind from helioglow variations in the sky can be quite challenging if the heliolatitudinal structure of the solar FUV/EUV radiation is not properly included in the modeling of the heliospheric glow. We present results of analysis of the helio…
We present a photometrically accurate restitution of the K and F coronae from white-light images obtained over 24 Years [1996--2019] by the Large-Angle Spectrometric COronagraph "LASCO-C2" onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The procedure starts with the data set coming from the polarimetric separation of images of 512 x 512 pixels in which the F-corona and the instrumental stray light are entangled. Disentangling these components proceeds in three stages, each composed of several steps. Stage 1 establishes the distinct variations of the radiance of these components with the…
In observations of diffuse emissions like, e.g., the Lyman-$α$ heliospheric glow, contributions to the observed signal from point sources (e.g., stars) are considered as a contamination. There are relatively few brightest point sources that are usually properly resolved and can be subtracted or masked. We present results of analysis of the distribution of point sources using UV sky-survey maps from the SOHO/SWAN instrument and spectrophotometry data from the IUE satellite. The estimated distribution suggests that the number of these sources increases with decreasing intensity. Below a certain …
The global oscillations of the Sun are investigated on the base of three independent sets of data: 1. Records of Total Solar Irradiance (TSI). 2. The average brightness of the photosphere in MDI (SOHO) and HMI (SDO) images. 3. Records of the time variations of sunlight reflected from the planets during their passage in the field of view of the LASCO C3 coronagraph. It is found that in the low-frequency spectrum of solar oscillations as a star there are modes of 8-10, 36-38 hours and the main stable 9-day mode. The last mode can be regarded as a reflection of oscillatory processes near the fast…
We present an in-depth characterization of the polarimetric channel of the Large-Angle Spectrometric COronagraph/LASCO-C3 onboard SOHO. The polarimetric analysis of the white-light images makes use of polarized sequences composed of three images obtained through three polarizers oriented at +60$^\circ$, 0$^\circ$, and -60$^\circ$, complemented by a neighboring unpolarized image. However, the degradation of the 0$^\circ$ polarizer noticed in 1999 compelled us to reconstruct the corresponding images from the other ones thereafter. The analysis closely follows the method developed for LASCO-C2 (L…
We study the geoeffectiveness of a sample of complex events; each includes a coronal type II burst, accompanied by a GOES SXR flare and LASCO CME. The radio bursts were recorded by the ARTEMIS-IV radio spectrograph, in the 100-650 MHz range; the GOES SXR flares and SOHO/LASCO CMEs, were obtained from the Solar Geophysical Data (SGD) and the LASCO catalogue respectively. These are compared with changes of solar wind parameters and geomagnetic indices in order to establish a relationship between solar energetic events and their effects on geomagnetic activity.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the variation in the line width with height in the inner corona (region above 1.1 Rsun), by using the spectral data from LASCO-C1 aboard SOHO. We used data acquired at activity minimum (August - October 1996) and during the ascending phase of the solar cycle (March 1998). Series of images acquired at different wavelengths across the Fe X 637.6 nm (red) and Fe XIV 530.3 nm (green) coronal lines by LASCO-C1 allowed us to build radiance and width maps of the off-limb solar corona. In 1996, the line width of Fe XIV was roughly constant or increased with heig…
We seek to quantify the relative contributions of Lorentz forces and aerodynamic drag on the propagation of solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs). We use Graduated Cylindrical Shell (GCS) model fits to a representative set of 38 CMEs observed with the SOHO and STEREO spacecraft. We find that the Lorentz forces generally peak between 1.65 and 2.45 Rsun for all CMEs. For fast CMEs, Lorentz forces become negligible in comparison to aerodynamic drag as early as 3.5--4 Rsun. For slow CMEs, however, they become negligible only by 12--50 Rsun. For these slow events, our results suggest that some of the…
We present an in-depth characterization of the polarimetric channel of the Large-Angle Spectrometric COronagraph LASCO-C2 onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO). The polarimetric analysis of the white-light images makes use of polarized sequences composed of three images obtained though three polarizers oriented at +60°, 0° and -60°, complemented by a neighboring unpolarized image, and relies on the formalism of Mueller. The Mueller matrix characterizing the C2 instrument was obtained through extensive ground-based calibrations of the optical components and global laboratory tes…
We study a sample of complex events; each includes a coronal type II burst, accompanied by a GOES SXR flare and LASCO CME. The radio bursts were recorded by the ARTEMIS-IV radio spectrograph (100-650 MHz range); the GOES SXR flares and SOHO/LASCO CMEs, were obtained from the Solar Geophysical Data (SGD) and the LASCO lists respectively. The radio burst-flare-CME characteristics were compared and two groups of events with similar behavior were isolated. In the first the type II shock exciter appears to be a flare blast wave propagating in the wake of a CME. In the second the type II burst appea…
Mark 4, COR1/STEREO and LASCO/SOHO data analysis shows that at least a portion of type II radio bursts observed in the corona occurs in the presence of a CME, but in the absence of a shock ahead of them. A drift current instability in the CME frontal structure is discussed as a possible cause of such bursts.
We investigate the performance of six methods for predicting the CME time of arrival (ToA) and velocity at Earth using a sample of nine Earth-impacting CMEs between May 2010 and June 2011. The CMEs were tracked continuously from the Sun to near Earth in multi-viewpoint imaging data from STEREO SECCHI and SOHO LASCO. We use the Graduate Cylindrical Shell (GCS) model to estimate the three-dimensional direction and height of the CMEs in every image out to $\sim$200 R$_\odot$. We fit the derived three-dimensional (deprojected) height and time data with six different methods to extrapolate the CME …
How to properly understand coronal mass ejections (CMEs) viewed in white-light coronagraphs is crucial to many relative researches in solar and space physics. The issue is now particularly addressed in this paper through studying the source locations of all the 1078 LASCO CMEs listed in CDAW CME catalog during 1997 -- 1998 and their correlation with CMEs' apparent parameters. By manually checking LASCO and EIT movies of these CMEs, we find that, except 231 CMEs whose source locations can not be identified due to poor data, there are 288 CMEs with location identified on the front-side solar dis…
We report radial speed evolution of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) detected by the SOHO/LASCO coronagraph, interplanetary scintillation (IPS) at 327 MHz, and in-situ observations. In this study, we analyze solar wind disturbance factor (g-value) data derived from IPS observations during 1997-2009 covering nearly the whole period of Solar Cycle 23. By comparing observations from the SOHO/LASCO, IPS, and in situ, we then identify 39 ICMEs that could be analyzed carefully. Here, we define two speeds V_SOHO and V_bg, which are initial speed of ICME and the speed of the background so…
The GOLF instrument on board SoHO has been in operation for almost 25 years but aging of the instrument has now strongly affected its performance, especially in the low-frequency p-mode region. At the end of the SoHO mission, the ground-based network BiSON will remain the only facility able to perform Sun-integrated helioseismic observations. Therefore, we want to assess the helioseismic performances of an échelle spectrograph like SONG. Indeed, the high precision of such an instrument and the quality of the data acquired for asteroseismic purpose calls for an evaluation of the instrument abil…
Context. Several physical properties of solar polar plumes have been identified by different published studies, however such studies are rare and sometimes in disagreement. Aims. The purpose of the present work is to analyze a set of SOHO/UVCS data dedicated to the observation of plumes and to obtain a picture of the physical properties of plumes in the intermediate solar corona through a self-consistent analysis. Methods. We applied the Doppler Dimming technique to data acquired by SOHO/UVCS in April 1996, which was during the very early phases of the mission. From this we derived outflow spe…
In this study we refine a CME model presented in an earlier study on the global energetics of solar flares and associated CMEs, and apply it to all (860) GOES M- and X-class flare events observed during the first 7 years (2010-2016) of the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) mission, which doubles the statistics of the earlier study. The model refinements include: (1) the CME geometry in terms of a 3D sphere undergoing self-similar adiabatic expansion; (2) the inclusion of solar gravitational deceleration during the acceleration and propagation of the CME, which discriminates eruptive and confine…
Sunward-flowing voids above post-coronal mass ejection (CME) flare arcades were first discovered using the soft X-ray telescope (SXT) aboard Yohkoh and have since been observed with TRACE (extreme ultra-violet (EUV)), SOHO/LASCO (white light), SOHO/SUMER (EUV spectra), and Hinode/XRT (soft X-rays (SXR)). Supra-arcade downflow (SAD) observations suggest that they are the cross-sections of thin flux tubes retracting from a reconnection site high in the corona. Supra-arcade downflowing loops (SADLs) have also been observed under similar circumstances and are theorized to be SADs viewed from a per…
From the GOES-12/SXI data, we studied the initial stage of motion for six rapid (over 1500 km/s) "halo" coronal mass ejections (HCMEs) and traced the motion of these HCMEs within the SOHO/LASCO C2 and C3 field-of-view. For these HCMEs the time-dependent location, velocity and acceleration of their fronts were revealed. The conclusion was drawn that two types of CME exist depending on their velocity time profile. This profile depends on the properties of the active region where the ejection emerged. CMEs with equal ejection velocity time dependence originate form in the same active region. All …
We investigate the geoeffective events happened from 8 to 20 Sept 2011, analysing the most plausible solar sources of these events, where coronal mass ejections and coronal holes play a fundamental role. The physical properties of the coronal holes, such as area and magnetic field, are studied through the Solar Dynamics Observatory instruments: AIA 193 Å images and HMI longitudinal magnetograms. The active regions which are the origin of the coronal mass ejections are analysed in AIA and SoHO-LASCO data.
We present a statistical study of dynamical and kinetic characteristics of CMEs which show temporal and spatial association with flares and type II radio bursts or complex radio events of type II bursts and type IV continua. This study is based on a set of earth-directed full halo CMEs occurring during the present solar cycle, with data from the Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraphs (LASCO) and Extreme-Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) mission and the Magnetic Fields Investigation (MFI) and 3-D Plasma and Energetic Particle Analyzer Inves…
Tomography of the solar corona can provide cruicial constraints for models of the low corona, unique information on changes in coronal structure and rotation rates, and a valuable boundary condition for models of the heliospheric solar wind. This is the first of a series of three papers which aim to create a set of maps of the coronal density over an extended period (1996-present). The papers will describe the data processing and calibration (this paper), the tomography method (\paperii) and resulting atlas of coronal electron density at a height of 5\Rs\ between years 1996-2014 (\paperiii). The plasma density enhancements recently observed by the Large-Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) instrument onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft have sparked considerable interest. In our previous theoretical study of the formation and initial motion of these density enhancements it is found that beyond the helmet cusp of a coronal streamer the magnetized wake configuration is resistively unstable, that a traveling magnetic island develops at the center of the streamer, and that density enhancements occur within the magnetic islands. As the massive magnetic is…
Analysis of SOHO/LASCO C3 data reveals a discontinuity, interpreted as a shock wave, in plasma density radial profiles in a restricted region ahead of each of ten selected coronal mass ejections (CME) along their travel directions. In various events, shock wave velocity $V\approx$ 800-2500 km s$^{-1}$. Comparing the dependence of Alfvén Mach number $M_A$ on shock wave strength $ρ_2/ρ_1$, measured at $R > 10R_\odot$ from the center of the Sun, to ideal MHD calculations suggests that the effective adiabatic index $γ$, characterizing the processes inside the shock front, is largely between 2 and …
The determination of solar wind outflow velocity is fundamental in order to probe the mechanisms of wind acceleration in the corona. We aim to study, via the Doppler dimming technique, the effects that the chromospheric Lyα line profile shape causes on the determination of the outflow speed of coronal HI atoms. The Doppler dimming technique takes into account the decrease of coronal Lyα radiation in regions where HI atoms flow out in the solar wind. Starting from UV observations (UVCS/SOHO) of the coronal Lyα line and simultaneous measurements of pB (LASCO/SOHO and Mk3/MLSO), we studied the ef…
We report kinematic properties of slow interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) identified by SOHO/LASCO, interplanetary scintillation, and in-situ observations, and propose a modified equation for the ICME motion. We identify seven ICMEs between 2010 and 2011, and examine them with 39 events reported in our previous work. We examine 15 fast (V_SOHO - V_bg > 500 km/s), 25 moderate (0 km/s <= V_SOHO - V_bg <= 500 km/s), and 6 slow (V_SOHO - V_bg < 0 km/s) ICMEs, where V_SOHO and V_bg are the initial speed of ICMEs and the speed of the background solar wind, respectively. For slow ICMEs, we…
We compare estimates of the speed and width of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in several catalogs for the CMEs associated with ~200 solar energetic particle (SEP) events in 2006-2013 that included 25 MeV protons. The catalogs used are: CDAW, CACTUS, SEEDS and CORIMP, all derived from observations by the LASCO coronagraphs on the SOHO spacecraft, the CACTUS catalog derived from the COR2 coronagraphs on the STEREO-A and -B spacecraft, and the DONKI catalog, which uses observations from SOHO and the STEREO spacecraft. We illustrate how, for this set of events, CME parameters can differ considerabl…

Comet C/2002 S2, a member of the Kreutz family of Sungrazing comets, was discovered in white light images of the SOHO/LASCO coronagraph on 2002 September 18 and observed in \hi\, \lya\, emission by the SOHO/UVCS instrument at four different heights as it approached the Sun. The \hi\, \lya\, line profiles detected by UVCS are analyzed to determine the spectral parameters: line intensity, width and Doppler shift with respect to the coronal background. Two dimensional comet images of these parameters are reconstructed at the different heights. A novel aspect of the observations of this sungrazing…
In this work, we focus on the analysis of a CME-driven shock observed by SOHO/LASCO. We show that white-light coronagraphic images can be employed to estimate the compression ratio X = rho_d / rho_u all along the front of CME-driven shocks. X increases from the shock flanks (where X ~ 1.2) to the shock center (where X ~ 3.0 is maximum). From the estimated X values, we infer the Alfvén Mach number for the general case of an oblique shock. It turns out that only a small region around the shock center is supercritical at earlier times, while higher up in the corona the whole shock becomes subcrit…
We study 14 large solar jets observed in polar coronal holes. In EUV movies from SDO/AIA, each jet appears similar to most X-ray jets and EUV jets that erupt in coronal holes, but each is exceptional in that it goes higher than most, so high that it is observed in the outer corona beyond 2.2 RSun in images from the SOHO/LASCO/C2 coronagraph. From AIA He II 304 Å movies and LASCO/C2 running-difference images of these high-reaching jets, we find: (1) the front of the jet transits the corona below 2.2 RSun at a speed typically several times the sound speed; (2) each jet displays an exceptionally …
Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), as they can inject a large amounts of mass and magnetic flux into the interplanetary space, are the primary source of space weather phenomena on the Earth. The present review first briefly introduces the solar surface signatures of the origins of CMEs and then focuses on the attempts to understand the kinematic evolution of CMEs from the Sun to the Earth. CMEs have been observed in the solar corona in white-light from a series of space missions over the last five decades. In particular, LASCO/SOHO has provided almost continuous coverage of CMEs for more than two …
The newly revised sunspot number series allows for placing historical geoeffective storms in the context of several hundred years of solar activity. Using statistical analyses of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) X-ray observations from the past ~30 years and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) catalog (1996-present), we present sunspot-number-dependent flare and CME rates. In particular, we present X-ray flare rates as a function of sunspot number for the past three cycles. We a…
The cluster formed by active regions (ARs) NOAA 11121 and 11123, approximately located on the solar central meridian on 11 November 2010, is of great scientific interest. This complex was the site of violent flux emergence and the source of a series of Earth-directed events on the same day. The onset of the events was nearly simultaneously observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) telescope aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Extreme-Ultraviolet Imagers (EUVI) on the Sun-Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) suite of telescopes onboard the So…
This work consists of two parts: the first devoted to the study of the heating of the magnetically confined Solar Corona, and the second to the acceleration of the Slow Solar Wind. Direct 3D reduced MHD simulations are presented. They model the heating of coronal loops in the solar atmosphere via the tangling of coronal field lines by photospheric footpoints motions within the framework of the "Parker scenario". We have derived scalings of physical quantities with loop length, and the ratio of photospheric to coronal Alfven velocities. The development of a turbulent dynamics makes the dissipat…
In this paper we conduct a data survey searching for well-defined streamer wave events observed by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) on-board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) throughout Solar Cycle 23. As a result, 8 candidate events are found and presented here. We compare different events and find that in most of them the driving CMEs ejecta are characterized by a high speed and a wide angular span, and the CME-streamer interactions occur generally along the flank of the streamer structure at an altitude no higher than the bottom of the field of view of LASCO…
The shear-flow-driven instability can play an important role in energy transfer processes in coronal plasma. We present for the first time the observation of a kink-like oscillation of a streamer probably caused by the streaming kinkmode Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The wave-like behavior of the streamer was observed by Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph Experiment (LASCO) C2 and C3 aboard SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The observed wave had a period of about 70 to 80 minutes, and its wavelength increased from 2 Rsun to 3 Rsun in about 1.5 hours. The phase speeds of its cre…
Measurement of the solar wind speed near the Sun is important for understanding the acceleration mechanism of the solar wind. In this study, we determine 2D solar wind speeds from 6 to 26 solar radii by applying Fourier motion filters to \textit{SOHO}/LASCO C3 movies observed from 1999 to 2010. Our method successfully reproduces the original flow speeds in the artificially generated data as well as streamer blobs. We measure 2D solar wind speeds from 1-day to 1-year timescales and their variation in solar cycle 24. We find that the solar wind speeds at timescales longer than a month in the sol…
It has been known that some solar activity indicators show a double-peak feature in their evolution through a solar cycle, which is not conspicuous in sunspot number. In this letter, we investigate the high solar dynamic activity in the declining phase of the sunspot cycle by examining the evolution of polar and low latitude coronal hole areas and the statistics of splitting and merging events of coronal holes and coronal mass ejections detected by SOHO/LASCO C3 in solar cycle 23. Although the total coronal hole area is at its maximum near the sunspot minimum, in which polar coronal holes prev…
Faraday rotation measures (RMs) of the polarized emission from extragalactic radio sources occulted by the coronal plasma were used to infer the radial profile of the inner heliospheric magnetic field near solar minimum activity. By inverting LASCO/SOHO polarized brightness (pB) data taken during the days of observations on May 1997, we retrieved the electron density distribution along the lines of sight to the sources, thus allowing to disentangle the two plasma properties that contribute to the observed RMs. By comparing the observed RM values to those theoretically predicted by a power-law …
Coronal dimming of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission has the potential to be a useful forecaster of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). As emitting material leaves the corona, a temporary void is left behind which can be observed in spectral images and irradiance measurements. The velocity and mass of the CMEs should impact the character of those observations. However, other physical processes can confuse the observations. We describe these processes and the expected observational signature, with special emphasis placed on the differences. We then apply this understanding to a coronal dimming even…
Solar cycle 23 witnessed the observation of hundreds of halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs), thanks to the high dynamic range and extended field of view of the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) mission. More than two thirds of halo CMEs originating on the front side of the Sun have been found to be geoeffective (Dst =< -50 nT). The delay time between the onset of halo CMEs and the peak of ensuing geomagnetic storms has been found to depend on the solar source location (Gopalswamy et al., 2007). In particular, limb halo CMEs …
Triggering mechanisms of solar eruptions have long been a challenge. A few previous case studies have indicated that preceding gentle filament merging via magnetic reconnection may launch following intense eruption, according with the tether-cutting (TC) model. However, detailed process of TC reconnection between filaments has not been exhibited yet. In this work, we report the high resolution observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer (IRIS) of TC reconnection between two sheared filaments in NOAA active region 12146. The TC reconnection commenced since 15:35 UT on 2014 Augus…
The Wide-field Imager for Solar Probe (WISPR) onboard Parker Solar Probe (PSP), observing in white light, has a fixed angular field of view, extending from 13.5 degree to 108 degree from the Sun and approximately 50 degree in the transverse direction. In January 2021, on its seventh orbit, PSP crossed the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) near perihelion at a distance of 20 solar radii. At this time, WISPR observed a broad band of highly variable solar wind and multiple coronal rays. For six days around perihelion, PSP was moving with an angular velocity exceeding that of the Sun. During this p…
To measure the magnetic field strength in the solar corona, we examined 10 fast (> 1000 km/s) limb CMEs which show clear shock structures in SOHO/LASCO images. By applying piston-shock relationship to the observed CME's standoff distance and electron density compression ratio, we estimated the Mach number, Alfven speed, and magnetic field strength in the height range 3 to 15 solar radii (Rs). Main results from this study are: (1) the standoff distance observed in solar corona is consistent with those from a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model and near-Earth observations; (2) the Mach number as a s…
