We consider settings for which one needs to perform multiple flow simulations based on the Navier-Stokes equations, each having different values for the physical parameters and/or different initial condition data, boundary conditions data, and/or forcing functions. For such settings, we propose a second-order time accurate ensemble-based method that to simulate the whole set of solutions, requires, at each time step, the solution of only a single linear system with multiple right-hand-side vectors. Rigorous analyses are given proving the conditional stability and error estimates for the proposed algorithm. Numerical experiments are provided that illustrate the analyses.
We devised a first order time stepping ensemble hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method for a group of parameterized convection diffusion PDEs with different initial conditions, body forces, boundary conditions and coefficients in our earlier work [3]. We obtained an optimal convergence rate for the ensemble solutions in $L^\infty(0,T;L^2(Ω))$ on a simplex mesh; and obtained a superconvergent rate for the ensemble solutions in $L^2(0,T;L^2(Ω))$ after an element-by-element postprocessing if polynomials degree $k\ge 1$ and the coefficients of the PDEs are independent of time. In this wo…
In this paper, we propose, analyze, and test an efficient algorithm for computing ensemble average of incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) flows, where instances/members correspond to varying kinematic viscosity, magnetic diffusivity, body forces, and initial conditions. The algorithm is decoupled in Elsässer variables and permits a shared coefficient matrix for all members at each time-step. Thus, the algorithm is much more computationally efficient than separately computing simulations for each member using usual MHD algorithms. We prove the proposed algorithm is unconditionally stable …
We present a novel reduced order model (ROM) approach for parameterized time-dependent PDEs based on modern learning. The ROM is suitable for multi-query problems and is nonintrusive. It is divided into two distinct stages: A nonlinear dimensionality reduction stage that handles the spatially distributed degrees of freedom based on convolutional autoencoders, and a parameterized time-stepping stage based on memory aware neural networks (NNs), specifically causal convolutional and long short-term memory NNs. Strategies to ensure generalization and stability are discussed. The methodology is tes…
Projection-based reduced order models are effective at approximating parameter-dependent differential equations that are parametrically separable. When parametric separability is not satisfied, which occurs in both linear and nonlinear problems, projection-based methods fail to adequately reduce the computational complexity. Devising alternative reduced order models is crucial for obtaining efficient and accurate approximations to expensive high-fidelity models. In this work, we develop a time-stepping procedure for dynamical parameter-dependent problems, in which a neural-network is trained t…
In this paper, an implicit time stepping meshless scheme is proposed to find the numerical solution of high-dimensional sine-Gordon equations (SGEs) by combining the high dimensional model representation (HDMR) and the Fourier hyperbolic cross (HC) approximation. To ensure the sparseness of the relevant coefficient matrices of the implicit time stepping scheme, the whole domain is first divided into a set of subdomains, and the relevant derivatives in high-dimension can be separately approximated by the Fourier HDMR-HC approximation in each subdomain. The proposed method allows for stable larg…
We construct a higher-order adaptive method for strong approximations of exit times of Itô stochastic differential equations (SDE). The method employs a strong Itô--Taylor scheme for simulating SDE paths, and adaptively decreases the step-size in the numerical integration as the solution approaches the boundary of the domain. These techniques turn out to complement each other nicely: adaptive time-stepping improves the accuracy of the exit time by reducing the magnitude of the overshoot of the numerical solution when it exits the domain, and higher-order schemes improve the approximation of th…
Two phase flows that include phase transition, especially phase creation, with a sharp interface remain a challenging task for numerics. We consider the isothermal Euler equations with phase transition between a liquid and a vapor phase. The phase interface is modeled as a sharp interface and the mass transfer across the phase boundary is modeled by a kinetic relation. Existence and uniqueness results were proven in Ref. \cite{Hantke2019a}. Using sharp interfaces for simulating nucleation and cavitation results in the grid containing tiny cells that are several orders of magnitude smaller than…
We present the latest developments of our High-Order Spectral Element Solver (HORSES3D), an open source high-order discontinuous Galerkin framework, capable of solving a variety of flow applications, including compressible flows (with or without shocks), incompressible flows, various RANS and LES turbulence models, particle dynamics, multiphase flows, and aeroacoustics. We provide an overview of the high-order spatial discretisation (including energy/entropy stable schemes) and anisotropic p-adaptation capabilities. The solver is parallelised using MPI and OpenMP showing good scalability for u…
A highly accurate method for simulating surfactant-covered droplets in two-dimensional Stokes flow with solid boundaries is presented. The method handles both periodic channel flows of arbitrary shape and stationary solid constrictions. A boundary integral method together with a special quadrature scheme is applied to solve the Stokes equations to high accuracy, also for closely interacting droplets. The problem is considered in a periodic setting and Ewald decompositions for the Stokeslet and stresslet are derived. Computations are accelerated using the spectral Ewald method. The time evoluti…

Two ocean models are considered for geophysical flow simulations: the multi-layer shallow water equations and the multi-layer primitive equations. For the former, we investigate the parallel performance of exponential time differencing (ETD) methods, including exponential Rosenbrock-Euler, ETD2wave, and B-ETD2wave. For the latter, we take advantage of the splitting of barotropic and baroclinic modes and propose a new two-level method in which an ETD method is applied to solve the fast barotropic mode. These methods could improve the computational efficiency of numerical simulations because ETD…

Parallel-in-time methods, such as multigrid reduction-in-time (MGRIT) and Parareal, provide an attractive option for increasing concurrency when simulating time-dependent PDEs in modern high-performance computing environments. While these techniques have been very successful for parabolic equations, it has often been observed that their performance suffers dramatically when applied to advection-dominated problems or purely hyperbolic PDEs using standard rediscretization approaches on coarse grids. In this paper, we apply MGRIT or Parareal to the constant-coefficient linear advection equation, …

This paper considers numerical discretization of a nonlocal conservation law modeling vehicular traffic flows involving nonlocal inter-vehicle interactions. The nonlocal model involves an integral over the range measured by a horizon parameter and it recovers the local Lighthill-Richards-Whitham model as the nonlocal horizon parameter goes to zero. Good numerical schemes for simulating these parameterized nonlocal traffic flow models should be robust with respect to the change of the model parameters but this has not been systematically investigated in the literature. We fill this gap through …
The paper is devoted to the simulation of maritime two-phase flows of air and water. Emphasis is put on an extension of the classical Volume-of-Fluid (VoF) method by a diffusive contribution derived from a Cahn-Hilliard (CH) model and its benefits for simulating immiscible, incompressible two-phase flows. Such flows are predominantly simulated with implicit VoF schemes, which mostly employ heuristic downwind-biased approximations for the concentration transport to mimic a sharp interface. This strategy introduces a severe time step restriction and requires pseudo time-stepping of steady flows.…

Simulating fluid flows in different virtual scenarios is of key importance in engineering applications. However, high-fidelity, full-order models relying, e.g., on the finite element method, are unaffordable whenever fluid flows must be simulated in almost real-time. Reduced order models (ROMs) relying, e.g., on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) provide reliable approximations to parameter-dependent fluid dynamics problems in rapid times. However, they might require expensive hyper-reduction strategies for handling parameterized nonlinear terms, and enriched reduced spaces (or Petrov-Galer…
