The different point defects formed by two hydrogen atoms or two helium atoms in tungsten were investigated through first-principles calculation. The energetically favorable site for a hydrogen atom is tetrahedral interstitial site while substitutional site is the most preferred site for a helium atom. The formation energies of two hydrogen or helium atoms are determined by their positions, and there are not a multiple of a single atom's. After relaxation, two adjacent hydrogen atoms are away from each other while helium atoms are close to. The reasons for the interaction between two hydrogen or helium atoms are also discussed.
Helium-ion-induced swelling and blistering of single-crystal tungsten is investigated using a Helium Ion Microscope for site-specific dose-controlled irradiation (at 25 keV) with analysis by Helium Ion Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy (cross-sectioning by Focused Ion Beam milling). Our measurements show that the blister cavity forms at the depth of the helium peak and that nanobubbles coalesce to form nanocracks within the envelope of the ion stopping range, causing swelling of the blister shell. These results provide the first direct experimental eviden…
Tungsten is the main candidate material for plasma-facing armour components in future fusion reactors. Bombardment with energetic fusion neutrons causes collision cascade damage and defect formation. Interaction of defects with helium, produced by transmutation and injected from the plasma, modifies defect retention and behaviour. Here we investigate the residual lattice strains caused by different doses of helium-ion-implantation into tungsten and tungsten-rhenium alloys. Energy and depth-resolved synchrotron X-ray micro-diffraction uniquely permits the measurement of lattice strain with sub-…
Low-energy hydrogen irradiation is known to induce bubble formation in tungsten, while its atomistic mechanisms remain little understood. Using first-principles calculations and statistical models, we studied the self-clustering behavior of hydrogen in tungsten. Unlike previous speculations that hydrogen self-clusters are energetically unstable owing to the general repulsion between two hydrogens, we demonstrated that hydrogen self-cluster becomes more favorable as the cluster size increases. We found that hydrogen atoms would form two-dimensional platelet-like structures along {100} planes. T…
The formation of helium cavities in coarse-grained materials produces hardening proportional to the number density and size of the cavities and due to the interaction of dislocations with intragranular helium defects. In nanostructured metals containing a high density of interfacial sinks, preferential cavity formation on the grain boundaries instead produces softening and often attributed to enhanced interfacial plasticity. Employing two grades of ultrafine-grained tungsten, we explore this effect using targeted implantation studies to map cavity evolution as a function of the irradiation con…
Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the dependence of migration behaviours of single helium atoms near tungsten surfaces on the surface orientation and temperature. For W{100} and W{110} surfaces, He atoms can quickly escape out near the surface without accumulation even at a temperature of 400 K. The behaviours of helium atoms can be well-described by the theory of continuous diffusion of particles in a semi-infinite medium. For a W{111} surface, the situation is complex. Different types of trap mutations occur within the neighbouring region of the W{111} surface. The trap …
Lattice swelling and modulus change in a helium-implanted tungsten alloy: X-ray micro-diffraction, surface acoustic wave measurements, and multiscale modelling
In this work, we combine Density Functional Theory data with a Thermodynamic and a kinetic model to determine the total concentration of hydrogen implanted in the sub-surface of tungsten exposed to a hydrogen flux. The sub-surface hydrogen concentration is calculated given a flux of hydrogen, a temperature of implantation, and the energy of the incoming hydrogen ions as independent variables. This global model is built step by step; an equilibrium between atomic hydrogen within bulk tungsten and a molecular hydrogen gas phase is first considered, and the calculated solubility is compared with …
Tungsten is the main candidate material for plasma-facing armour components in future fusion reactors. In-service, fusion neutron irradiation creates lattice defects through collision cascades. Helium, injected from plasma, aggravates damage by increasing defect retention. Both can be mimicked using helium-ion-implantation. In a recent study on 3000 appm helium-implanted tungsten (W-3000He), we hypothesized helium-induced irradiation hardening, followed by softening during deformation. The hypothesis was founded on observations of large increase in hardness, substantial pile-up and slip-step f…
Based on the in-detail tracking of the movements of atoms in a large number of molecular dynamics simulation boxes, we find that the diffusion of H and He atoms in single-crystal W is composed of non-Markovian jumps. The waiting time distribution of the triggering of jumps is not the usually recognized exponential distribution, but a temperature-dependent power-law distribution. The power-law distribution of the waiting time may lead to clear ergodicity-breaking diffusion, a phenomenon that has formerly been reported to only occur in complex systems such as living biological cells or soft matt…

In this study, we demonstrate sustainable and green nanotechnology for room-temperature synthesis of H$_x$WO$_3$ ($0<x<0.5$) via a novel reaction pathway induced by mechanical energy. A simple mixture of monoclinic WO$_3$ powder and polyolefin (polypropylene) is used to obtain H$_x$WO$_3$ nanoparticles that show high crystallinity even through high-energy ball milling synthesis. The composite of H$_x$WO$_3$ nanoparticles and nanocarbon by-products exhibit unique optoelectronic properties along with outstanding enhancement of photocatalytic performance in the decomposition of azo-dye water poll…
Under low energy and high flux/fluence irradiation of helium (He) atoms, the formation and bursting of He bubbles on tungsten (W) surfaces play important roles in the morphological evolution of component surfaces and impurity production in fusion reactors. Microscopically, the bursting of He bubbles is a stochastic process, and He bubbles have statistically average lifetimes. In the present paper, a molecular dynamics-based method was developed to extract, for the first time, the lifetime of He bubbles near tungsten surfaces. It was found that He bubble bursting can be treated as an activated …
Hydrogen isotopes are retained in materials for fusion power applications, changing both hydrogen embrittlement and tritium inventory as the microstructure undergoes irradiation damage. But modelling of highly damaged materials - exposed to over 0.1 displacements per atom (dpa) - where asymptotic saturation is observed, for example tungsten facing the plasma in a fusion tokamak reactor, is difficult because a highly damaged microstructure cannot be treated as weakly interacting isolated defect traps. In this paper we develop computational techniques to find the defect content in highly irradia…
Here, we propose a two-dimensional tungsten boride (WB4) lattice, with the Gibbs free energy for the adsorption of atomic hydrogen, tending to be the ideal value of 0 eV at 3% strained state, to host a better hydrogen evolution reaction activity. Based on first-principles calculations, it is demonstrated that the multiple d-p-pi and d-p-sigma Dirac conjugations of WB4 lattice ensures its excellent electronic transport characteristics. Meanwhile, coupling with the d-orbitals of W, the p-orbitals of borophene subunits in WB4 lattice can modulate the d band center to get a good HER performance. O…

Properties of point defects resulting from the incorporation of inert-gas atoms in bcc tungsten are investigated systematically using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The most stable configuration for the interstitial neon, argon, krypton and xenon atoms is the tetrahedral site, similarly to what was found earlier for helium in W. The calculated formation energies for single inert-gas atoms at interstitial sites as well as at substitutional sites are much larger for Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe than for He. While the variation of the energy of insertion of inert-gas defects …

Through a series of Raman spectroscopy studies, we investigate the behaviour of hydrogen-helium and hydrogen-nitrogen mixtures at high pressure across wide ranging concentrations. We find that there is no evidence of chemical association, miscibility, nor any demixing of hydrogen and helium in the solid state up to pressures of 250 GPa at 300 K. In contrast, we observe the formation of concentration-dependent N$_2$-H$_2$ van der Waals solids, which react to form N-H bonded compounds above 50 GPa. Through this combined study, we can demonstrate that the recently claimed chemical association of …
We have carried out a series of helium atom scattering measurements in order to characterise the adsorption properties of hydrogen on antimony(111). Molecular hydrogen does not adsorb at temperatures above 110 K in contrast to pre-dissociated atomic hydrogen. Depending on the substrate temperature, two different adlayer phases of atomic hydrogen on Sb(111) occur. At low substrate temperatures ($110~$K), the deposited hydrogen layer does not show any ordering while we observe a perfectly ordered $(1\times 1)$ H/Sb(111) structure for deposition at room temperature. Furthermore, the amorphous hyd…

The rational design of transition metal dichalcogenide electrocatalysts for efficiently catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is believed to lead to the generation of a renewable energy carrier. To this end our work has made three main contributions. At first, we have demonstrated that exfoliation via ionic liquid assisted grinding combined with gradient centrifugation is an efficient method to exfoliate bulk WS2 to nanosheets with a thickness of a few atomic layers and lateral size dimensions in the range of 100 nm to 2 nm. These WS2 nanosheets decorated with scattered nanodots exhibit…
Hydrogen and helium are the most abundant elements in the universe and they constitute the interiors of gas giant planets. Thus, their equations of states, phase, chemical state, and chemical reactivity at extreme conditions are of great interest. Applying Raman spectroscopy, visual observation, and synchrotron X-ray diffraction in diamond anvil cells (DAC), we performed experiments on H2-He 1:1 and D2-He 1:10 compressed gas mixture up to 100 GPa at 300 K. By comparing with the available data on pure bulk materials, we find no sign of miscibility, chemical reactivity, and new compound formatio…
The purpose of this short contribution is to report on the development of a Spectral Neighbor Analysis Potential (SNAP) for tungsten. We have focused on the characterization of elastic and defect properties of the pure material in order to support molecular dynamics simulations of plasma-facing materials in fusion reactors. A parallel genetic algorithm approach was used to efficiently search for fitting parameters optimized against a large number of objective functions. In addition, we have shown that this many-body tungsten potential can be used in conjunction with a simple helium pair potent…

Mechanism of Oxygen Reduction via Chemical Affinity in NiO/SiO2 Interfaces Irradiated with keV Energy Hydrogen and Helium Ions for Heterostructure Fabrication
The vibrational frequency of hydrogen molecules has been observed to increase strongly with He concentration in helium hydrogen fluid mixtures. This has been associated with He-H interactions, either directly through chemical bonding, or indirectly through increased local pressure. Here, we demonstrate that the increase in the Raman frequency of the hydrogen molecule vibron is due to the number of H$_2$ molecules participating in the mode. There is no chemical bonding between He and H$_2$, helium acts only to separate the molecules. The variety of possible environments for H$_2$ gives rise to …
An accurate understanding of the phase diagram of dense hydrogen and helium mixtures is a crucial component in the construction of accurate models of Jupiter, Saturn, and Jovian extrasolar planets. Though DFT based first principles methods have the potential to provide the accuracy and computational efficiency required for this task, recent benchmarking in hydrogen has shown that achieving this accuracy requires a judicious choice of functional, and a quantification of the errors introduced. In this work, we present a quantum Monte Carlo based benchmarking study of a wide range of density func…
We use our newly constructed quantum Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo algorithm to perform computer experiments for the two phase coexistence of a hydrogen-helium mixture. Our results are in quantitative agreement with the experimental results of C. M. Sneed, W. B. Streett, R. E. Sonntag, and G. J. Van Wylen. The difference between our results and the experimental ones is in all cases less than 15% relative to the experiment, reducing to less than 5% in the low helium concentration phase. At the gravitational inversion between the vapor and the liquid phase, at low temperatures and high pressures, t…
The Kubo-Greenwood (KG) formula is often used in conjunction with Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory (DFT) to compute the optical conductivity, particularly for warm dense mater. For applying the KG formula, all KS eigenstates and eigenvalues up to an energy cutoff are required and thus the approach becomes expensive, especially for high temperatures and large systems, scaling cubically with both system size and temperature. Here, we develop an approach to calculate the KS conductivity within the stochastic DFT (sDFT) framework, which requires knowledge only of the KS Hamiltonian but not…
In this study, we use the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the performance of graphenylene--1 membrane for hydrogen ($H_2$) purification and helium ($He$) separation. The stability of this membrane is confirmed by calculating its cohesive energy. Our results show that a surmountable energy barrier for $H_2$ (0.384 eV) and $He$ (0.178 eV) molecules passing through graphenylene-1 membrane. At room temperature, the selectivity of $H_2$/$CO_2$, $H_2$/$N_2$, $H_2$/$CO$ and $H_2$/$CH_4$ are obtained as $3 \times 10^{27}$, $2 \tim…
Three-dimensional (3D) excitonic complexes influence the optoelectronic properties of bulk semiconductors. More generally, correlated few-particle molecules and ions, held together by pairwise Coulomb potentials, play a fundamental role in a variety of fields in physics and chemistry. Based on statistically exact diffusion quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we have studied excitonic three- and four-body complexes (trions and biexcitons) in bulk 3D semiconductors as well as a range of small molecules and ions in which the nuclei are treated as quantum particles on an equal footing with the elect…
