Controlling quantum critical phenomena in strongly correlated electron systems, which emerge in the neighborhood of a quantum phase transition, is a major challenge in modern condensed matter physics. Quantum critical phenomena are generated from the delicate balance between long-range order and its quantum fluctuation. So far, the nature of quantum phase transitions has been investigated by changing a limited number of external parameters such as pressure and magnetic field. We propose a new approach for investigating quantum criticality by changing the strength of quantum fluctuation that is controlled by the dimensional crossover in metallic quantum well (QW) structures of strongly correlated oxides. With reducing layer thickness to the critical thickness of metal-insulator transition, crossover from a Fermi liquid to a non-Fermi liquid has clearly been observed in the metallic QW of SrVO$_3$ by \textit{in situ} angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Non-Fermi liquid behavior with the critical exponent $α = 1$ is found to emerge in the two-dimensional limit of the metallic QW states, indicating that a quantum critical point exists in the neighborhood of the thickness-dependent Mott transition. These results suggest that artificial QW structures provide a unique platform for investigating novel quantum phenomena in strongly correlated oxides in a controllable fashion.
A novel metallic and magnetic transition metal oxide Ag2NiO2 is studied by means of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure is characterized by alternating stacking of a Ni3+O2 layer and a (Ag2)+ layer, the former realizing a spin-1/2 triangular lattice with eg orbital degeneracy and the latter providing itinerant electrons. It is found that the NiO2 layer exhibits orbital ordering at Ts = 260 K and antiferromagnetic spin ordering at TN = 56 K. Moreover, a moderately large mass enhancement is found for the itinerant electrons, suggesting…
A new mechanism is proposed to explain the colossal magnetoresistance and related phenomena. Moving electrons accompanied by Jahn-Teller phonon and spin-wave clouds may form composite polarons in ferromagnetic narrow-band manganites. The ground-state and finite-temperature properties of such composite polarons are studied in the present paper. By using a variational method, it is shown that the energy of the system at zero temperature decreases with the formation of composite polaron; the energy spectrum and effective mass of the composite polaron at finite temperature is found to be strongly …
Correlated electrons in transition metal oxides (TMOs) exhibit a variety of emergent phases. When TMOs are confined to a single-atomic-layer thickness, experiments so far have shown that they usually lose diverse properties and become insulators. In an attempt to extend the range of electronic phases of the single-atomic-layer oxide, we search for a metallic phase in a monolayer-thick epitaxial SrRuO$_3$ film. Combining atomic-scale epitaxy and angle-resolved photoemission measurements, we show that the monolayer SrRuO$_3$ is a strongly correlated metal. Systematic investigation reveals that t…
The highly conductive layered metallic oxide \pdcoo{} is a near-perfect analogue to an alkali metal in two dimensions. It is distinguished from other two-dimensional electron systems where the Fermi surface does not reach the Brillouin zone boundary by a high planar electron density exceeding $10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$. The simple single-band quasi-2D electronic structure results in strongly anisotropic transport properties and limits the effectiveness of electron-phonon scattering. Measurements on single crystals in the temperature range from 10-300K show that the thermal conductivity is much more w…
We report on a study of charge transport in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ single crystals with carrier density tuned across several orders of magnitude. Comparing this system with other quasi-cubic perovskites, in particular strontium titanate, we draw a comprehensive picture of metal-insulator transition and dilute metallicity in this $AB$O$_3$ family. Because of a lower electric permittivity, the metal-insulator transition in EuTiO$_{3-δ}$ occurs at higher carrier densities compared to SrTiO$_3$. At low temperature, a distinct $T^2$ resistivity is visible. Its prefactor $A$ smoothly decreases with increasin…
We present a detailed study of the emergence of bulk ferromagnetism in low carrier density samples of undoped indium tin oxide (ITO). We used annealing to increase the density of oxygen vacancies and change sample morphology without introducing impurities through the metal insulator transition (MIT). We utilized a novel and highly sensitive "Corbino-disk torque magnetometry" technique to simultaneously measure the thermodynamic and transport effects of magnetism on the same sample after successive annealing. With increased sample granularity, carrier density increased, the sample became more m…
The interplay of non-local Coulomb repulsion and Hund's coupling in the d-orbital manifold in frustrated triangular lattices is analyzed by a mutliband extended Hubbard model. We find a rich phase diagram with several competing phases, including a robust pinball liquid phase, which is an unconventional metal characterized by threefold charge order, bad metallic behavior and the emergence of high spin local moments. Our results naturally explain the anomalous charge-ordered metallic state observed in the triangular layered compound AgNiO2. The potential relevance to other triangular transition …
The conductance confined at the interface of complex oxide heterostructures provides new opportunities to explore nanoelectronic as well as nanoionic devices. Herein we show that metallic interfaces can be realized in SrTiO3-based heterostructures with various insulating overlayers of amorphous LaAlO3, SrTiO3 and yttria-stabilized zirconia films. On the other hand, samples of amorphous La7/8Sr1/8MnO3 films on SrTiO3 substrates remain insulating. The interfacial conductivity results from the formation of oxygen vacancies near the interface, suggesting that the redox reactions on the surface of …
We investigated current-induced effective magnetic field Heff in half-metallic oxide La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) films with various thicknesses by using the planar Hall effect. Applying in-plane current to the LSMO films exerted an in-plane Heff orthogonal to the current direction on magnetization. The Heff magnitude increased with increasing current magnitude, and the direction reversed when the applied current switched to opposite sign. Assuming that a 6.5-u.c. insulating layer is created in the LSMO, the values of Heff observed in devices with three different LSMO thicknesses were almost scaled…
A compound with metallic electrical conductivity usually has a considerable total thermal conductivity because both electrons and photons contribute to thermal transport. Here, we show an exceptional example of iridium oxide, Bi3Ir3O11, that concurrently displays metallic electrical conductivity and ultralow thermal conductivity approaching 0.61 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K. The compound crystallizes into a cubic structural framework with space group Pn-3. The edge- and corner-sharing IrO6 octahedra with a mixed Ir4.33+ charge state favor metallic electrical transport. Bi3Ir3O11 exhibits an extremely lo…
Magnetic insulators with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) play a key role in exploring pure spin current phenomena and developing ultralow-dissipation spintronic devices, thereby it is highly desirable to develop new material platforms. Here we report epitaxial growth of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO)-SrIrO3 (SIO) composite oxide films (LSMIO) with different crystalline orientations fabricated by sequential two-target ablation process using pulsed laser deposition. The LSMIO films exhibit high crystalline quality with homogeneous mixture of LSMO and SIO at atomic level. Ferrimagnetic and …
Single crystals of KSbO3-type rhenium oxides, La4Re6O$19, Pb6Re6O19, Sr2Re3O9 and Bi3Re3O11, were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Their crystal structures can be regarded as a network of three-dimensional orthogonal-dimer lattice of edge-shared ReO6 octahedra. All of them exhibit small magnitude of Pauli paramagnetism, indicating metallic electronic states without strong electron correlations. The resistivity of these rhenates, except Bi3Re3O11, have a temperature dependence of $rho(T)=ρ_{0}+AT^{n}$ $(n \approx 1.6)$ in a wide temperature range between 5 K and 300 K, which is extraordina…
We report the filling control of the pyrochlore oxide Y2Ir2O7. Metallic ground state appears with increasing substitution content x (x >= 0.3). We have revealed that the density of states at the Fermi level rapidly changes with x by this filling control of Y2Ir2O7.
Interfaces between correlated complex oxides are promising avenues to realize new forms of magnetism that arise as a result of charge transfer, proximity effects and locally broken symmetries. We report upon the discovery of a non-collinear magnetic structure in superlattices of the ferromagnetic metallic oxide La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) and the correlated metal LaNiO3 (LNO). The exchange interaction between LSMO layers is mediated by the intervening LNO, such that the angle between the magnetization of neighboring LSMO layers varies in an oscillatory manner with the thickness of the LNO layer. The…
Heterostructures and crystal interfaces play a major role in state-of-the-art semiconductor devices and play a central role in the field of oxide electronics. In oxides the link between the microscopic properties of the interfaces and bulk properties of the resulting heterostructures challenge our fundamental understanding. Insights on the early growth stage of interfaces and its influence on resulting physical properties are scarce -- typically the information is inferred from post growth characterization. Here, we report on real time measurements of the transport properties of SrTiO3-based h…
We propose and theoretically analyze a novel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect-transistor (MOSFET) type of spin transistor (hereafter referred to as a spin MOSFET) consisting of a MOS gate structure and half-metallic-ferromagnet (HMF) contacts for the source and drain. When the magnetization configuration between the HMF source and drain is parallel (antiparallel), highly spin-polarized carriers injected from the HMF source to the channel are transported into (blocked by) the HMF drain, resulting in the magnetization-configuration-dependent output characteristics. Our two-dimensional nume…
Oxygen vacancies are increasingly recognized to play a role in phenomena observed at transition-metal oxide interfaces. Here we report a study of SrRuO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (SRO/LSMO) interfaces using a combination of quantitative aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and density-functional calculations. Cation displacements are observed at the interface, indicative of a dipole-like electric field even though both materials are nominally metallic. The observed displacements are reproduced by theory if O vacancies are present in the near-i…
In this study, based on the first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of the transition metal-oxide-incorporated 2D g-C3N4 nanosheet (labeled C3N4-TM-O, TM = Sc-Mn). The results suggest that the TM-O binds to g-C3N4 nanosheets strongly for all systems. We found that the 2D C3N4-TM-O framework is ferromagnetic for TM = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, while it is antiferromagnetic for TM = Mn. All the ferromagnetic systems exhibit the half-metallic property. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulations based on the Heisenberg model suggest that the Curie tempera…
We report the first formation of the metallic $p$-$n$ junctions, the ferroelectric (Ba,Sr)TiO$_3$ (BST) switched optimally electron-doped ($n$-type) metallic T'-phase superconductor, (La,Ce)$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCCO), and hole-doped ($p$-type) metallic CMR manganite (La,Sr)MnO$_3$ (LSMO) junctions. In contrast with the previous semiconductor $p$-$n$ ($p$-$I$-$n$) junctions which are switched by the built-in field $V_0$, the present metallic oxides $p$-$I$-$n$ junctions are switched by double barrier fields, the built-in field $V_0$, and the ferroelectric reversed polarized field $V_{rp}$, both take to…
We report an ab-initio comparative study of the electric-field-gradient tensor (EFG) and structural relaxations introduced by acceptor (Cd) and donor (Ta) impurities when they replace cations in a series of binary oxides: TiO2, SnO2, and In2O3. Calculations were performed with the Full-Potential Linearized-Augmented Plane Waves method that allows us to treat the electronic structure and the atomic relaxations in a fully self-consistent way. We considered different charge states for each impurity and studied the dependence on these charge states of the electronic properties and the structural r…
In this paper we report the observation of curent induced change of resistance of thin metallic oxide films. The resistance changes at a very low current (current density $J \geq 10^{3}$ A/cm$^{2}$). We find that the time dependence associated with the processes (increase of resistance) show a streched exponential type dependence at lower temperature, which crosses over to a creep type behavior at $T \geq$ 350 K. The time scale associated shows a drastic drop in the magnitude at $T \approx$ 350 K, where a long range diffusion sets in increasing the conductivity noise. The phenomena is like a "…
In this work, we investigate the correlation between morphology, composition, and the mechanical properties of metallic amorphous tungsten-oxygen and amorphous tungsten-oxide films deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition. This correlation is investigated by the combined use of Brillouin Spectroscopy and the substrate curvature method. The stiffness of the films is strongly affected by both the oxygen content and the mass density. The elastic moduli show a decreasing trend as the mass density decreases and the oxygen-tungsten ratio increases. A plateaux region is detected in correspondence of the …
The existence of approximately 30 noncentrosymmetric metals (NCSM) suggests a contraindication between crystal structures without inversion symmetry and metallic behavior. Those containing oxygen are especially scarce. Here we propose and demonstrate a design framework to remedy this property disparity and accelerate NCSM-oxide discovery: The primary ingredient relies on the removal of inversion symmetry through displacements of atoms whose electronic degrees of freedom are decoupled from the states at the Fermi level. Density functional theory calculations validate this crystal--chemistry str…
In bulk semiconductor materials, the insulator-metal transition (IMT) is governed by the concentration of conduction electrons. Meanwhile, even when fabricated from metallic building blocks, nanocrystal films are often insulating with inter-nanocrystal contacts acting as electron transport bottlenecks. Using a library of transparent conducting tin-doped indium oxide nanocrystal films with varied electron concentration, size, and contact area, we test candidate criteria for the IMT and establish a phase diagram for electron transport behavior. From variable temperature conductivity measurements…
Correlated oxide heterostructures pose a challenging problem in condensed matter research due to their structural complexity interweaved with demanding electron states beyond the effective single-particle picture. By exploring the correlated electronic structure of SmTiO$_3$ doped with few layers of SrO, we provide an insight into the complexity of such systems. Furthermore, it is shown how the advanced combination of band theory on the level of Kohn-Sham density functional theory with explicit many-body theory on the level of dynamical mean-field theory provides an adequate tool to cope with …
The optical/infrared properties of films of vanadium dioxide (VO2) and vanadium sesquioxide (V2O3) have been investigated via ellipsometry and near-normal incidence reflectance measurements from far infrared to ultraviolet frequencies. Significant changes occur in the optical conductivity of both VO2 and V2O3 across the metal-insulator transitions at least up to (and possibly beyond) 6 eV. We argue that such changes in optical conductivity and electronic spectral weight over a broad frequency range is evidence of the important role of electronic correlations to the metal-insulator transitions …
Thermodynamic equilibrium can be sometimes reached at the interaction between metal and oxide melts in high temperature welding and metallurgical processes. Calculation of equilibrium phase composition is also one of the stages (along with kinetics analysis) of building an end-to-end physical and chemical model of real processes. Developing a thermodynamic model of high temperature processes is described in many scientific sources (1-18). Thermodynamic patterns of oxidation-reduction reactions on the metal-slag melt interface are also taken into account when building phenomenological models of…
The two-dimensional metal forming at the interface between an oxide insulator and SrTiO3 provides new opportunities for oxide electronics. However, the quantum Hall effect, one of the most fascinating effects of electrons confined in two dimensions, remains underexplored at these complex oxide heterointerfaces. Here, we report the experimental observation of quantized Hall resistance in a SrTiO3 heterointerface based on the modulation-doped amorphous-LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ heterostructure, which exhibits both high electron mobility exceeding 10000 cm$^{2}$/Vs and low carrier density on the or…
Empowering conventional materials with unexpected magnetoelectric properties is appealing to the multi-functionalization of existing devices and the exploration of future electronics. Recently, owing to its unique effect in modulating a matter's properties, ultra-small dopants, e.g. H, D, and Li, attract enormous attention in creating emergent functionalities, such as superconductivity, and metal-insulator transition. Here, we report an observation of bipolar conduction accompanied by a giant positive magnetoresistance in D-doped metallic Ti oxide (TiOxDy) films. To overcome the challenges in …
Thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters represent atomically well-defined active centers for catalysis with resolved crystal structures, enabling the creation of a homogeneous and defined surface. The correlation of characterization via FT-IR spectroscopy with kinetics studies gives insight into the gold clusters activity and tests their utilization to bridge the gap between organometallic complex-based homogenous catalysis and nanoparticle based heterogeneous catalysis as well as the gap between the bulk crystal structure model catalysis and real-world catalysis.
We report the observation of the intrinsic damping-like spin-orbit torque (SOT) arising from the Berry curvature in metallic-magnet/CuO$_x$ heterostructures. We show that a robust damping-like SOT, an order of magnitude larger than a field-like SOT, is generated in the heterostructure despite the absence of the bulk spin-orbit effect in the CuO$_x$ layer. Furthermore, by tuning the interface oxidation level, we demonstrate that the field-like SOT changes drastically and even switches its sign, which originates from oxygen modulated spin-dependent disorder. These results provide an important in…
We have found Dirac nodal lines (DNLs) in the band structures of metallic rutile oxides IrO$_2$, OsO$_2$, and RuO$_2$ and revealed a large spin Hall conductivity contributed by these nodal lines, which explains a strong spin Hall effect (SHE) of IrO$_2$ discovered recently. Two types of DNLs exist. The first type forms DNL networks that extend in the whole Brillouin zone and appears only in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which induces surface states on the boundary. Because of SOC-induced band anti-crossing, a large intrinsic SHE can be realized in these compounds. The second type a…
A systematic study of (A,A')2FeMoO6 (A,A'=Ca, Sr, Ba) ferromagnetic oxides with double perovskite structure has been performed using 95,97Mo and 57Fe NMR spectroscopy. These oxides are isoelectronic but have substantially different Curie temperatures. The NMR analysis provides clear evidence that the magnetic moment at Mo sites is not constant but varies sensitively with the ionic size of the alkaline ions. The 95,97Mo frequency, and thus the electronic charge at Mo ions, is found to be smaller in Ba and Ca than in Sr-based oxides. The charge release from Mo sites is accompanied by an uptake a…
Electronic properties of the metallic pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 are studied by means of electrical resistivity and Hall measurements. Semimetallic band structures are revealed as expected from band structure calculations. It is found that large changes in carrier density and mass occur at the structural phase transition at Ts1 = 200 K. A large mass enhancement is observed, particularly for the high-temperature phase with the ideal pyrochlore structure, suggesting that an anomalous correlation has an important effect on the itinerant electrons in the pyrochlore lattice.
The interaction of the dye molecule N3 (cis-bis(isothiocyanato)bis(2,2-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylato)-ruthenium(II)) with the ultra-thin oxide layer on a AlNi(110) substrate, has been studied using synchrotron radiation based photoelectron spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). Calibrated X-ray absorption and valence band spectra of the monolayer and multilayer coverages reveal that charge transfer is possible from the molecule to the AlNi(110) substrate via tunnelling through the ultra-thin oxide layer and i…
Contrary to the antiferromagnetic and insulating character of bulk NiO, one-dimensional chains of this material can become half-metallic due to the lower coordination of their atoms. Here we present ab initio electronic structure and quantum transport calculations of ideal infinitely long NiO chains and of more realistic short ones suspended between Ni electrodes. While infinite chains are insulating, short suspended chains are half-metallic minority-spin conductors which display very large magnetoresistance and a spin-valve behaviour controlled by a single atom.
This review is focused on extrinsic magnetotransport effects in ferromagnetic oxides. It consists of two parts; the second part is devoted to an overview of experimental data and theoretical models for extrinsic magnetotransport phenomena. Here a critical discussion of domain-wall scattering is given. Results on surfacial and interfacial magnetism in oxides are presented. Spin-polarized tunnelling in ferromagnetic junctions is reviewed and grain-boundary magnetoresistance is interpreted within a model of spin-polarized tunnelling through natural oxide barriers. The situation in ferromagnetic o…
Micro-solid oxide fuel cells based on thin films have strong potential for use in portable power devices. However, devices based on silicon substrates typically involve thin-film metallic electrodes which are unstable at high temperatures. Devices based on bulk metal substrates overcome these limitations, though performance is hindered by the challenge of growing state-of-the-art epitaxial materials on metals. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the growth of epitaxial cathode materials on metal substrates (stainless steel) commercially supplied with epitaxial electrolyte layers (1.5 {um (…
Nanostrucured Europium oxide and hydroxide films were obtained by pulsed Nd:Yag (532 nm) laser ablation of an Europium metallic target, in the presence of a 1 mbar Helium buffer atmosphere. Both the produced film and the ambient plasma were characterized. The plasma was monitored by an electrostatic probe, for plume expansion in vacuum or in the presence of the buffer atmosphere. The time evolution of the ion saturation current was obtained for several probe to substrate distances. The results show the splitting of the plume into two velocity groups, being the lower velocity profile associated…
We predict through our first-principles calculations that four double perovskite oxides of Bi2ABO6 (AB = FeMo, MnMo, MnOs, CrOs) are half-metallic ferrimagnets. Our calculated results shows that the four optimized structures have negative formation energy, from -0.42 to -0.26 eV per formula unit, which implies that they could probably be realized. In the case of Bi2FeMoO6, the half-metallic gap and Curie temperature are predicted to reach to 0.71 eV and 650 K, respectively, which indicates that high spin polarization could be kept at high temperatures far beyond room temperature. It is believe…
Nickelates are a rich class of materials, ranging from insulating magnets to superconductors. But for stoichiometric materials, insulating behavior is the norm, as for most late transition metal oxides. Notable exceptions are the 3D perovskite LaNiO$_3$, an unconventional paramagnetic metal, and the layered Ruddlesden-Popper phases R$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, (R=La, Pr, Nd). The latter are particularly intriguing because they exhibit an unusual metal-to-metal transition. Here, we demonstrate that this transition results from an incommensurate density wave with both charge and magnetic character that …
Honeycomb layered oxides with monovalent or divalent, monolayered cationic lattices generally exhibit myriad crystalline features encompassing rich electrochemistry, geometries and disorders, which particularly places them as attractive material candidates for next-generation energy storage applications. Herein, we report global honeycomb layered oxide compositions, ${\rm Ag_2}M_2{\rm TeO_6}$ ($M = \rm Ni, Mg, \textit{etc}.$) exhibiting $\rm Ag$ atom bilayers with sub-valent states within Ag-rich crystalline domains of ${\rm Ag_6}M_2{\rm TeO_6}$ and $\rm Ag$-deficient domains of ${\rm Ag}_{2 -…
Understanding the physics of strongly correlated electronic systems has been a central issue in condensed matter physics for decades. In transition metal oxides, strong correlations characteristic of narrow $d$ bands is at the origin of such remarkable properties as the Mott gap opening, enhanced effective mass, and anomalous vibronic coupling, to mention a few. SrVO$_3$, with V$^{4+}$ in a $3d^1$ electronic configuration is the simplest example of a 3D correlated metallic electronic system. Here, we focus on the observation of a (roughly) quadratic temperature dependence of the inverse electr…
We have studied the [100]-[110] anisotropy of the Compton profile in the bilayer manganite. Quantitative agreement is found between theory and experiment with respect to the anisotropy in the two metallic phases (i.e. the low temperature ferromagnetic and the colossal magnetoresistant phase under a magnetic field of 7 T). Robust signatures of the metal-insulator transition are identified in the momentum density for the paramagnetic phase above the Curie temperature. We interpret our results as providing direct evidence for the transition from the metallic-like to the admixed ionic-covalent bon…
We present a systematic study of the electronic structure of several prototypical correlated transition-metal oxides: VO2, V2O3, Ti2O3, LaTiO3, and YTiO3. In all these materials, in the low-temperature insulating phases the local and semilocal density approximations (LDA and GGA) of density-functional theory yield a metallic Kohn-Sham band structure. Here we show that, without invoking strong-correlation effects, the role of non-local exchange is essential to cure the LDA/GGA delocalization error and provide a band-structure description of the electronic properties in qualitative agreement wit…
Based on first-principles calculations we performed a systematic study of the energetic stability, structural characterization, and electronic properties of the fully oxidized $A_{2}B$, electrenes, with the following combinations, (i) $A$=Ca, Sr, and Ba for $B$=N; (ii) $A$=Sr and Ba for $B$=P; and Y$_{2}$C, and Ba$_{2}$As. We have considered one side oxidation of single layer electrenes $(O/A_{2}B)$, and two side oxidation of bilayer electrenes $(O/(A_{2}B)_{2}/O)$. We show that the hexagonal lattice of the pristine host is no longer the ground state structure in the oxidized systems. Our tota…
Wereport the results of a sequence of magnetisation and magneto-optical studies on laser ablated thin films of ZnCoAlO and ZnCoO that contain a small amount of metallic cobalt. The results are compared to those expected when all the magnetization is due to isolated metallic clusters of cobalt and with an oxide sample that is almost free from metallic inclusions. Using a variety of direct magnetic measurements and also magnetic circular dichroism we find that there is ferromagnetism within both the oxide and the metallic inclusions, and furthermore that these magnetic components are exchange-co…
The Pd, and Pt based ABO2 delafossites are a unique class of layered, triangular oxides with 2D electronic structure and a large conductivity that rivals the noble metals. Here, we report successful growth of the metallic delafossite PdCoO2 by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The key challenge is controlling the oxidation of Pd in the MBE environment where phase-segregation is driven by the reduction of PdCoO2 to cobalt oxide and metallic palladium. This is overcome by combining low temperature (300 °C) atomic layer-by-layer MBE growth in the presence of reactive atomic oxygen with a post-growth …
The recent study of oxides led to the discovery of several new fascinating physical phenomena. High-temperature superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, dilute magnetic doping, or multiferroicity were discovered and investigated in transition-metal oxides, representing a prototype class of strongly correlated electronic systems. This development was accompanied by an enormous progress regarding thin film fabrication. Within the past two decades, epitaxial thin films with crystalline quality approaching semiconductor standards became available using laser molecular beam epitaxy. This evol…
Order-disorder processes fundamentally determine the structure and properties of many important oxide systems for energy and computing applications. While these processes have been intensively studied in bulk materials, they are less investigated and understood for nanostructured oxides in highly non-equilibrium conditions. These systems can now be realized through a range of deposition techniques and probed at exceptional spatial and chemical resolution, leading to a greater focus on interface dynamics. Here we survey a selection of recent studies of order-disorder behavior at thin film oxide…
