Adapting the spectral viewpoint suggested in Ledoux (2012) in the context of symmetric Markov diffusion generators and recently exploited in the non-diffusive setup of a Poisson random measure by Döbler and Peccati (2017), we investigate the fourth moment condition for discrete multiple integrals with respect to general, i.e.\ non-symmetric and non-homogeneous, Rademacher sequences and show that, in this situation, the fourth moment alone does not govern the asymptotic normality. Indeed, here one also has to take into consideration the maximal influence of the corresponding kernel functions. In particular, we show that there is no exact fourth moment theorem for discrete multiple integrals of order $m\geq2$ with respect to a symmetric Rademacher sequence. This behavior, which is in contrast to the Gaussian (see Nualart and Peccati (2005)) and Poisson (see Döbler and Peccati (2017)) situation, closely resembles the conditions for asymptotic normality of degenerate, non-symmetric $U$-statistics from the classical paper by de Jong (1990).
We show that complex hypercontractivity gives better constants than real hypercontractivity in comparison inequalities for (low) moments of Rademacher chaoses (homogeneous polynomials on the discrete cube).
In this article, we prove that in the Rademacher setting, a random vector with chaotic components is close in distribution to a centred Gaussian vector, if both the maximal influence of the associated kernel and the fourth cumulant of each component is small. In particular, we recover the univariate case recently established in Döbler and Krokowski (2017). Our main strategy consists in a novel adaption of the exchangeable pairs couplings initiated in Nourdin and Zheng (2017), as well as its combination with estimates via chaos decomposition.
In this work, we study the normal approximation and almost sure central limit theorems for some functionals of an independent sequence of Rademacher random variables. In particular, we provide a new chain rule that improves the one derived by Nourdin, Peccati and Reinert(2010) and then we deduce the bound on Wasserstein distance for normal approximation using the (discrete) Malliavin-Stein approach. Besides, we are able to give the almost sure central limit theorem for a sequence of random variables inside a fixed Rademacher chaos using the Ibragimov-Lifshits criterion.
We analyze from the viewpoint of an abstract Markov operator recent results by Nualart and Peccati, and Nourdin and Peccati, on the fourth moment as a condition on a Wiener chaos to have a distribution close to Gaussian. In particular, we are led to introduce a notion of chaos associated to a Markov operator through its iterated gradients and present conditions on the (pure) point spectrum for a sequence of chaos eigenfunctions to converge to a Gaussian distribution. Convergence to gamma distributions may be examined similarly.
A moderate deviation principle as well as moderate and large deviation inequalities for a sequence of elements living inside a fixed Wiener chaos associated with an isonormal Gaussian process are shown. The conditions under which the results are derived coincide with those of the celebrated fourth moment theorem of Nualart and Peccati. The proofs rely on sharp estimates for cumulants. As applications, explosive integrals of a Brownian sheet, a discretized version of the quadratic variation of a fractional Brownian motion and the sample bispectrum of a spherical Gaussian random field are consid…
In this paper, a product formula of Hermite polynomials is given and then the relation between the real Wiener-Itô chaos and the complex Wiener-Itô chaos (or: multiple integrals) is shown. By this relation and the known multivariate extension of the fourth moment theorem for the real multiple integrals, the fourth moment theorem (or say: the Nualart-Peccati criterion) for the complex Wiener-Itô multiple integrals is obtained.
We prove a bound for the Wasserstein distance between vectors of smooth complex random variables and complex Gaussians in the framework of complex Markov diffusion generators. For the special case of chaotic eigenfunctions, this bound can be expressed in terms of certain fourth moments of the vector, yielding a quantitative Fourth Moment Theorem for complex Gaussian approximation on complex Markov diffusion chaos. This extends results of Azmoodeh, Campese, Poly (2014) and Campese, Nourdin, Peccati (2015) for the real case. Our main ingredients are a complex version of the so called $Γ$-calculu…
We prove that a normalized sequence of multiple Wigner integrals (in a fixed order of free Wigner chaos) converges in law to the standard semicircular distribution if and only if the corresponding sequence of fourth moments converges to 2, the fourth moment of the semicircular law. This extends to the free probabilistic, setting some recent results by Nualart and Peccati on characterizations of central limit theorems in a fixed order of Gaussian Wiener chaos. Our proof is combinatorial, analyzing the relevant noncrossing partitions that control the moments of the integrals. We can also use the…
This paper deals with sequences of random variables belonging to a fixed chaos of order $q$ generated by a Poisson random measure on a Polish space. The problem is investigated whether convergence of the third and fourth moment of such a suitably normalized sequence to the third and fourth moment of a centred Gamma law implies convergence in distribution of the involved random variables. A positive answer is obtained for $q=2$ and $q=4$. The proof of this four moments theorem is based on a number of new estimates for contraction norms. Applications concern homogeneous sums and $U$-statistics o…
We compute the exact rates of convergence in total variation associated with the 'fourth moment theorem' by Nualart and Peccati (2005), stating that a sequence of random variables living in a fixed Wiener chaos verifies a central limit theorem (CLT) if and only if the sequence of the corresponding fourth cumulants converges to zero. We also provide an explicit illustration based on the Breuer-Major CLT for Gaussian-subordinated random sequences.
In 2005, Nualart and Peccati showed the so-called Fourth Moment Theorem asserting that, for a sequence of normalized multiple Wiener-Itô integrals to converge to the standard Gaussian law, it is necessary and sufficient that its fourth moment tends to 3. A few years later, Kemp et al. extended this theorem to a sequence of normalized multiple Wigner integrals, in the context of the free Brownian motion. The q-Brownian motion, q in (-1,1], introduced by the physicists Frisch and Bourret in 1970 and mathematically studied by Bozejko and Speicher in 1991, interpolates between the classical Browni…
We prove a version of the multidimensional Fourth Moment Theorem for chaotic random vectors, in the general context of diffusion Markov generators. In addition to the usual componentwise convergence and unlike the infinite-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck generator case, another moment-type condition is required to imply joint convergence of of a given sequence of vectors.
In [14], Nourdin and Peccati combined the Malliavin calculus and Stein's method of normal approximation to associate a rate of convergence to the celebrated fourth moment theorem [19] of Nualart and Peccati. Their analysis, known as the Malliavin-Stein method nowadays, has found many applications towards stochastic geometry, statistical physics and zeros of random polynomials, to name a few. In this article, we further explore the relation between these two fields of mathematics. In particular, we construct exchangeable pairs of Brownian motions and we discover a natural link between Malliavin…
In [NP09a], Nourdin and Peccati established a neat characterization of Gamma approximation on a fixed Wiener chaos in terms of convergence of only the third and fourth cumulants. In this paper, we investigate the rate of convergence in Gamma approximation on Wiener chaos in terms of the iterated Gamma operators of Malliavin Calculus. On the second Wiener chaos, our upper bound can be further extended to an exact rate of convergence in a suitable probability metric $d_2$ in terms of the maximum of the third and fourth cumulants, analogous to that of normal approximation in [NP15] under one extr…
The fourth moment theorem provides error bounds of the order $\sqrt{{\mathbb E}(F^4) - 3}$ in the central limit theorem for elements $F$ of Wiener chaos of any order such that ${\mathbb E}(F^2) = 1$. It was proved by Nourdin and Peccati (2009) using Stein's method and the Malliavin calculus. It was also proved by Azmoodeh, Campese and Poly (2014) using Stein's method and Dirichlet forms. This paper is an exposition on the connections between Stein's method and the Malliavin calculus and between Stein's method and Dirichlet forms, and on how these connections are exploited in proving the fourth…
For real symmetric matrices that are accessible only through matrix vector products, we present Monte Carlo estimators for computing the diagonal elements. Our probabilistic bounds for normwise absolute and relative errors apply to Monte Carlo estimators based on random Rademacher, sparse Rademacher, normalized and unnormalized Gaussian vectors, and to vectors with bounded fourth moments. The novel use of matrix concentration inequalities in our proofs represents a systematic model for future analyses. Our bounds mostly do not depend on the matrix dimension, target different error measures tha…
A quantitative "fourth moment theorem" is provided for any self-adjoint element in a homogeneous Wigner chaos: the Wasserstein distance is controlled by the distance from the fourth moment to two. The proof uses the free counterpart of the Stein discrepancy. On the way, the free analogue of the WSH inequality is established.
The aim of the present paper is to establish the multidimensional counterpart of the \textit{fourth moment criterion} for homogeneous sums in independent leptokurtic and mesokurtic random variables (that is, having positive and zero fourth cumulant, respectively), recently established in \cite{NPPS} in both the classical and in the free setting. As a consequence, the transfer principle for the Central limit Theorem between Wiener and Wigner chaos can be extended to a multidimensional transfer principle between vectors of homogeneous sums in independent commutative random variables with zero th…
We prove an exact fourth moment bound for the normal approximation of random variables belonging to the Wiener chaos of a general Poisson random measure. Such a result -- that has been elusive for several years -- shows that the so-called `fourth moment phenomenon', first discovered by Nualart and Peccati (2005) in the context of Gaussian fields, also systematically emerges in a Poisson framework. Our main findings are based on Stein's method, Malliavin calculus and Mecke-type formulae, as well as on a methodological breakthrough, consisting in the use of carré-du-champ operators on the Poisso…
In this paper, we consider a target random variable $Y \sim \CVG$ distributed according to a centered Variance--Gamma distribution. For a generic random element $F=I_2(f)$ in the second Wiener chaos with $\E[F^2]= \E[Y^2]$ we establish a non-asymptotic optimal bound on the distance between $F$ and $Y$ in terms of the maximum of difference of the first six cumulants. This six moment theorem extends the celebrated optimal fourth moment theorem of I.\ Nourdin \& G.\ Peccati for normal approximation. The main body of our analysis constitutes a splitting technique for test functions in the Banach s…
In two new papers (Bierme et al., 2013) and (Nourdin and Peccati, 2015), sharp general quantitative bounds \ are given to complement the well-known fourth moment theorem of Nualart and Peccati, by which a sequence in a fixed Wiener chaos converges to a normal law if and only if its fourth cumulant converges to $0$. The bounds show that the speed of convergence is precisely of order the maximum of the fourth cumulant and the absolute value of the third moment (cumulant). Specializing to the case of normalized centered quadratic variations for stationary Gaussian sequences, we show that a third …
We develop a new method for bounding the relative entropy of a random vector in terms of its Stein factors. Our approach is based on a novel representation for the score function of smoothly perturbed random variables, as well as on the de Bruijn's identity of information theory. When applied to sequences of functionals of a general Gaussian field, our results can be combined with the Carbery-Wright inequality in order to yield multidimensional entropic rates of convergence that coincide, up to a logarithmic factor, with those achievable in smooth distances (such as the 1-Wasserstein distance)…
We determine the order of magnitude of $\mathbb{E}|\sum_{n \leq x} f(n)|^{2q}$, where $f(n)$ is a Steinhaus or Rademacher random multiplicative function, and $0 \leq q \leq 1$. In the Steinhaus case, this is equivalent to determining the order of $\lim_{T \rightarrow \infty} \frac{1}{T} \int_{0}^{T} |\sum_{n \leq x} n^{-it}|^{2q} dt$. In particular, we find that $\mathbb{E}|\sum_{n \leq x} f(n)| \asymp \sqrt{x}/(\log\log x)^{1/4}$. This proves a conjecture of Helson that one should have better than squareroot cancellation in the first moment, and disproves counter-conjectures of various other …
Allen-Zhu, Gelashvili, Micali, and Shavit construct a sparse, sign-consistent Johnson-Lindenstrauss distribution, and prove that this distribution yields an essentially optimal dimension for the correct choice of sparsity. However, their analysis of the upper bound on the dimension and sparsity requires a complicated combinatorial graph-based argument similar to Kane and Nelson's analysis of sparse JL. We present a simple, combinatorics-free analysis of sparse, sign-consistent JL that yields the same dimension and sparsity upper bounds as the original analysis. Our analysis also yields dimensi…
Using a representation of the score function by means of the divergence operator we exhibit a sufficient condition, in terms of the negative moments of the norm of the Malliavin derivative, under which convergence in Fisher information to the standard Gaussian of sequences belonging to a given Wiener chaos is actually equivalent to convergence of only the fourth moment. Thus, our result may be considered as a further building block associated to the recent but already rich literature dedicated to the Fourth Moment Theorem of Nualart and Peccati. To illustrate the power of our approach we prove…
Based on recent findings by Bourguin and Peccati, we give a fourth moment type condition for an element of a free Poisson chaos of arbitrary order to converge to a free (centered) Poisson distribution. We also show that free Poisson chaos of order strictly greater than one do not contain any non-zero free Poisson random variables. We are also able to give a sufficient and necessary condition for an element of the first free Poisson chaos to have a free Poisson distribution. Finally, depending on the parity of the considered free Poisson chaos, we provide a general counterexample to the naive u…
"Arithmetic random waves" are the Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the two-dimensional torus (Rudnick and Wigman (2008), Krishnapur, Kurlberg and Wigman (2013)). In this paper we find that their nodal length converges to a non-universal (non-Gaussian) limiting distribution, depending on the angular distribution of lattice points lying on circles. Our argument has two main ingredients. An explicit derivation of the Wiener-Itô chaos expansion for the nodal length shows that it is dominated by its $4$th order chaos component (in particular, somewhat surprisingly, the second order chaos componen…
In a seminal paper of 2005, Nualart and Peccati discovered a surprising central limit theorem (called the "Fourth Moment Theorem" in the sequel) for sequences of multiple stochastic integrals of a fixed order: in this context, convergence in distribution to the standard normal law is equivalent to convergence of just the fourth moment. Shortly afterwards, Peccati and Tudor gave a multidimensional version of this characterization. Since the publication of these two beautiful papers, many improvements and developments on this theme have been considered. Among them is the work by Nualart and Orti…
We combine the notion of free Stein kernel and the free Malliavin calculus to provide quantitative bounds under the free (quadratic) Wasserstein distance in the multivariate semicircular approximations for self-adjoint vector-valued multiple Wigner integrals. On the way, we deduce an HSI inequality for a modified non-microstates free entropy with respect to the potential associated with these semicircular families in the case of non-degeneracy of the covariance matrix. The strategy of the proofs is based on functional inequalities involving the free Stein discrepancy. We obtain a bound which d…
