Caching popular contents at mobile devices, assisted by device-to-device (D2D) communications, is considered as a promising technique for mobile content delivery. It can effectively reduce backhaul traffic and service cost, as well as improving the spectrum efficiency. However, due to the selfishness of mobile users, incentive mechanisms will be needed to motivate device caching. In this paper, we investigate incentive mechanism design in cache-assisted D2D networks, taking advantage of the user mobility information. An inter-contact model is adopted to capture the average time between two consecutive contacts of each device pair. A Stackelberg game is formulated, where each user plays as a follower aiming at maximizing its own utility and the mobile network operator (MNO) plays as a leader aiming at minimizing the cost. Assuming that user responses can be predicted by the MNO, a cost minimization problem is formulated. Since this problem is NP-hard, we reformulate it as a non-negative submodular maximization problem and develop $(\frac{1}{4+ε})$-approximation local search algorithm to solve it. In the simulation, we demonstrate that the local search algorithm provides near optimal performance. By comparing with other caching strategies, we validate the effectiveness of the proposed incentive-based mobility-aware caching strategy.
Caching popular content at mobile devices, accompanied by device-to-device (D2D) communications, is one promising technology for effective mobile content delivery. User mobility is an important factor when investigating such networks, which unfortunately was largely ignored in most previous works. Preliminary studies have been carried out, but the effect of mobility on the caching performance has not been fully understood. In this paper, by explicitly considering users' contact and inter-contact durations via an alternating renewal process, we first investigate the effect of mobility with a gi…
In this paper, an incentive proactive cache mechanism in cache-enabled small cell networks (SCNs) is proposed, in order to motivate the content providers (CPs) to participate in the caching procedure. A network composed of a single mobile network operator (MNO) and multiple CPs is considered. The MNO aims to define the price it charges the CPs to maximize its revenue while the CPs compete to determine the number of files they cache at the MNO's small base stations (SBSs) to improve the quality of service (QoS) of their users. This problem is formulated as a Stackelberg game where a single MNO …
In this paper, the problem of proactive deployment of cache-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for optimizing the quality-of-experience (QoE) of wireless devices in a cloud radio access network (CRAN) is studied. In the considered model, the network can leverage human-centric information such as users' visited locations, requested contents, gender, job, and device type to predict the content request distribution and mobility pattern of each user. Then, given these behavior predictions, the proposed approach seeks to find the user-UAV associations, the optimal UAVs' locations, and the cont…
One of the most promising approaches to overcome the uncertainty and dynamic channel variations of millimeter wave (mmW) communications is to deploy dual-mode base stations that integrate both mmW and microwave ($μ$W) frequencies. If properly designed, such dual-mode base stations can enhance mobility and handover in highly mobile wireless environments. In this paper, a novel approach for analyzing and managing mobility in joint $μ$W-mmW networks is proposed. The proposed approach leverages device-level caching along with the capabilities of dual-mode base stations to minimize handover failure…
We consider a distributed caching device-to-device (D2D) network in which a user's file of interest is cached as several portions in the storage of other devices in the network. Assuming that the user needs to obtain all these file portions, the portions cached farther away naturally become the performance bottleneck. This is due to the fact that dominant interferers may be closer to the receiver than the serving device. Using a simple stochastic geometry model, we concretely demonstrate that this bottleneck can be loosened if the users are mobile. Gains obtained from mobility are quantified i…
Caching at mobile devices can facilitate device-to-device (D2D) communications, which may significantly improve spectrum efficiency and alleviate the heavy burden on backhaul links. However, most previous works ignored user mobility, thus having limited practical applications. In this paper, we take advantage of the user mobility pattern by the inter-contact times between different users, and propose a mobility-aware caching placement strategy to maximize the data offloading ratio, which is defined as the percentage of the requested data that can be delivered via D2D links rather than through …
User mobility has a large effect on optimal content placement in D2D caching networks. Since a typical user can communicate neighboring users who stay in the D2D communication area of the typical user, the optimal content placement should be changed according to the user mobility. Under consideration of randomness of incoming and outgoing users, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the average data load of a BS. It is proved that minimization of the average data load of a BS can be transformed to maximization of a monotonic submodular function with a matroid constraint, for which a…
In this paper, a novel approach for providing incentives for caching in small cell networks (SCNs) is proposed based on the economics framework of contract theory. In this model, a mobile network operator (MNO) designs contracts that will be offered to a number of content providers (CPs) to motivate them to cache their content at the MNO's small base stations (SBSs). A practical model in which information about the traffic generated by the CPs' users is not known to the MNO is considered. Under such asymmetric information, the incentive contract between the MNO and each CP is properly designed…
Content caching at small-cell base stations (SBSs) is a promising method to mitigate the excessive backhaul load and delay, particularly for on-demand video streaming applications. A cache-enabled heterogeneous cellular network architecture is considered in this paper, where mobile users connect to multiple SBSs during a video downloading session, and the SBSs request files, or fragments of files, from the macro-cell base station (MBS) according to the user requests they receive. A novel coded storage and delivery scheme is introduced to reduce the load on the backhaul link from the MBS to the…
User-to-network relaying enabled via Device-to-Device communications (D2D) is a promising technique for improving the performance of cellular networks. Since in practice relays are in mobility, a dynamic relay selection scheme is unavoidable. In this paper, we propose a dynamic relay selection policy that maximizes the performance of cellular networks (e.g. throughput, reliability, coverage) under cost constraints (e.g. transmission power, power budget). We represent the relays' dynamics as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and assume that only the locations of the selected relays are observable…
We consider a service cost minimization problem for resource-constrained small-cell networks with caching, where the challenge mainly stems from (i) the insufficient backhaul capacity and limited network bandwidth and (ii) the limited storing capacity of small-cell base stations (SBSs). Besides, the optimization problem is NP-hard since both the users' mobility patterns and content preferences are unknown. In this paper, we develop a novel mobility-aware joint routing and caching strategy to address the challenges. The designed framework divides the entire geographical area into small sections…
Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been widely adopted in wireless systems due to its flexibility, mobility, and agility. Nevertheless, a limited onboard battery greatly hinders UAV to prolong the serving time from communication tasks that need a high power consumption in active RF communications. Fortunately, caching and backscatter communication (BackCom) are appealing technology for energy efficient communication systems. This motivates us to investigate a wireless communication network with backscatter- and cache-assisted UAV technology. We assume a UAV with a cache memory is deployed as a …
In this paper, the problem of proactive caching is studied for cloud radio access networks (CRANs). In the studied model, the baseband units (BBUs) can predict the content request distribution and mobility pattern of each user, determine which content to cache at remote radio heads and BBUs. This problem is formulated as an optimization problem which jointly incorporates backhaul and fronthaul loads and content caching. To solve this problem, an algorithm that combines the machine learning framework of echo state networks with sublinear algorithms is proposed. Using echo state networks (ESNs),…

Content-centric mobile hybrid Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks consisting of mobile devices and static femto access points (FAPs) are studied, where each device moves according to the random walk mobility model and requests a content object from the library independently at random according to a Zipf popularity distribution. Instead of allowing access to content objects at macro base stations via costly backhaul providing connection to the core network, we consider a more practical scenario where mobile devices and static FAPs, each having a finite-size cache space, are able to cache a subset…
To make better use of file diversity provided by random caching and improve the successful transmission probability (STP) of a file, we consider retransmissions with random discontinuous transmission (DTX) in a large-scale cache-enabled heterogeneous wireless network (HetNet) employing random caching. We analyze and optimize the STP in two mobility scenarios, i.e., the high mobility scenario and the static scenario. First, in each scenario, by using tools from stochastic geometry, we obtain the closed-form expressions for the STP in the general and low signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) thresh…
The deployment of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites with terrestrial networks can potentially increase the efficiency and reduce the cost of relaying content from a data center to a set of edge caches hosted by 6G and beyond enabled macro base stations. In this work, the characteristics of the communication system and the mobility of LEO satellites are thoroughly discussed to describe the channel characteristics of LEO satellites, in terms of their frequency bands, latency, Doppler shifts, fading effects, and satellite access. Three different scenarios are proposed for the relay of data from da…
We consider the caching of content in the mobile devices in a dense wireless network using maximum distance separable (MDS) codes. We focus on an area, served by a base station (BS), where mobile devices move around according to a random mobility model. Users requesting a particular file download coded packets from caching devices within a communication range, using device-to-device communication. If additional packets are required to decode the file, these are downloaded from the BS. We analyze the device mobility and derive a good approximation of the distribution of caching devices within t…
A large-scale content-centric mobile ad hoc network employing subpacketization is studied in which each mobile node having finite-size cache moves according to the reshuffling mobility model and requests a content object from the library independently at random according to the Zipf popularity distribution. Instead of assuming that one content object is transferred in a single time slot, we consider a more challenging scenario where the size of each content object is considerably large and thus only a subpacket of a file can be delivered during one time slot, which is motivated by a fast mobil…
The coded caching scheme originally proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen (MAN) transmits coded multicast messages from a server to users equipped with caches via a capacitated shared-link and was shown to be information theoretically optimal within a constant multiplicative factor. This work extends the MAN scheme to a class of two-hop wired-wireless networks including one server connected via fronthaul links to a layer of $H$ helper nodes (access points/base stations), which in turns communicate via a wireless access network to $K$ users, each equipped with its own cache. Two variants are consid…
In device-to-device (D2D)-enabled caching cellular networks, the user terminals (UTs) collaboratively store and share a large volume of popular contents from the base station (BS) for traffic offloading and delivery delay reduction. In this article, the multi-winner auction based caching placement in D2D-enabled caching cellular networks is investigated for UT edge caching incentive and content caching redundancy reduction. Firstly, a multi-winner once auction for UT edge caching is modeled which auctions multiple contents for multiple UTs. Then the optimization problem for content caching rev…
The fifth generation wireless networks must provide fast and reliable connectivity while coping with the ongoing traffic growth. It is of paramount importance that the required resources, such as energy and bandwidth, do not scale with traffic. While the aggregate network traffic is growing at an unprecedented rate, users tend to request the same popular contents at different time instants. Therefore, caching the most popular contents at the network edge is a promising solution to reduce the traffic and the energy consumption over the backhaul links. In this paper, two scenarios are considered…
Driven by the visions of Internet of Things and 5G communications, recent years have seen a paradigm shift in mobile computing, from the centralized Mobile Cloud Computing towards Mobile Edge Computing (MEC). The main feature of MEC is to push mobile computing, network control and storage to the network edges (e.g., base stations and access points) so as to enable computation-intensive and latency-critical applications at the resource-limited mobile devices. MEC promises dramatic reduction in latency and mobile energy consumption, tackling the key challenges for materializing 5G vision. The pr…
