Standardized benchmarks are crucial for the majority of computer vision applications. Although leaderboards and ranking tables should not be over-claimed, benchmarks often provide the most objective measure of performance and are therefore important guides for research. We present a benchmark for Multiple Object Tracking launched in the late 2014, with the goal of creating a framework for the standardized evaluation of multiple object tracking methods. This paper collects the two releases of the benchmark made so far, and provides an in-depth analysis of almost 50 state-of-the-art trackers that were tested on over 11000 frames. We show the current trends and weaknesses of multiple people tracking methods, and provide pointers of what researchers should be focusing on to push the field forward.

Visual object tracking was generally tackled by reasoning independently on fast processing algorithms, accurate online adaptation methods, and fusion of trackers. In this paper, we unify such goals by proposing a novel tracking methodology that takes advantage of other visual trackers, offline and online. A compact student model is trained via the marriage of knowledge distillation and reinforcement learning. The first allows to transfer and compress tracking knowledge of other trackers. The second enables the learning of evaluation measures which are then exploited online. After learning, the…
This work presents a framework for tracking head movements and capturing the movements of the mouth and both the eyebrows in real-time. We present a head tracker which is a combination of a optical flow and a template based tracker. The estimation of the optical flow head tracker is used as starting point for the template tracker which fine-tunes the head estimation. This approach together with re-updating the optical flow points prevents the head tracker from drifting. This combination together with our switching scheme, makes our tracker very robust against fast movement and motion-blur. We …

CoCoLoT perceives whether the trackers …
Visual tracking algorithms are naturally adopted in various applications, there have been several benchmarks and many tracking algorithms, more expected to appear in the future. In this report, I focus on single object tracking and revisit the details of tracker evaluation based on widely used OTB\cite{otb} benchmark by introducing a simpler, accurate, and extensible method for tracker evaluation and comparison. Experimental results suggest that there may not be an absolute winner among tracking algorithms. We have to perform detailed analysis to select suitable trackers for use cases.

Siamese approaches have achieved promising performance in visual object tracking recently. The key to the success of Siamese trackers is to learn appearance-invariant feature embedding functions via pair-wise offline training on large-scale video datasets. However, the Siamese paradigm uses one-shot learning to model the online tracking task, which impedes online adaptation in the tracking process. Additionally, the uncertainty of an online tracking response is not measured, leading to the problem of ignoring potential failures. In this paper, we advocate online adaptation in the tracking stag…

Object tracking is one of the most challenging task and has secured significant attention of computer vision researchers in the past two decades. Recent deep learning based trackers have shown good performance on various tracking challenges. A tracking method should track objects in sequential frames accurately in challenges such as deformation, low resolution, occlusion, scale and light variations. Most trackers achieve good performance on specific challenges instead of all tracking problems, hence there is a lack of general purpose tracking algorithms that can perform well in all conditions.…

How would you fairly evaluate two multi-object tracking algorithms (i.e. trackers), each one employing a different object detector? Detectors keep improving, thus trackers can make less effort to estimate object states over time. Is it then fair to compare a new tracker employing a new detector with another tracker using an old detector? In this paper, we propose a novel performance measure, named Tracking Effort Measure (TEM), to evaluate trackers that use different detectors. TEM estimates the improvement that the tracker does with respect to its input data (i.e. detections) at frame level (…

In video object tracking, there exist rich temporal contexts among successive frames, which have been largely overlooked in existing trackers. In this work, we bridge the individual video frames and explore the temporal contexts across them via a transformer architecture for robust object tracking. Different from classic usage of the transformer in natural language processing tasks, we separate its encoder and decoder into two parallel branches and carefully design them within the Siamese-like tracking pipelines. The transformer encoder promotes the target templates via attention-based feature…

This paper proposes a novel framework to alleviate the model drift problem in visual tracking, which is based on paced updates and trajectory selection. Given a base tracker, an ensemble of trackers is generated, in which each tracker's update behavior will be paced and then traces the target object forward and backward to generate a pair of trajectories in an interval. Then, we implicitly perform self-examination based on trajectory pair of each tracker and select the most robust tracker. The proposed framework can effectively leverage temporal context of sequential frames and avoid to learn …

Both accuracy and efficiency are of significant importance to the task of visual object tracking. In recent years, as the surge of deep learning, Deep Convolutional NeuralNetwork (DCNN) becomes a very popular choice among the tracking community. However, due to the high computational complexity, end-to-end visual object trackers can hardly achieve an acceptable inference time and therefore can difficult to be utilized in many real-world applications. In this paper, we revisit a hierarchical deep feature-based visual tracker and found that both the performance and efficiency of the deep tracker…
Fully convolutional deep correlation networks are integral components of state-of the-art approaches to single object visual tracking. It is commonly assumed that these networks perform tracking by detection by matching features of the object instance with features of the entire frame. Strong architectural priors and conditioning on the object representation is thought to encourage this tracking strategy. Despite these strong priors, we show that deep trackers often default to tracking by saliency detection - without relying on the object instance representation. Our analysis shows that despit…

The $\ell_1$ tracker obtains robustness by seeking a sparse representation of the tracking object via $\ell_1$ norm minimization \cite{Xue_ICCV_09_Track}. However, the high computational complexity involved in the $ \ell_1 $ tracker restricts its further applications in real time processing scenario. Hence we propose a Real Time Compressed Sensing Tracking (RTCST) by exploiting the signal recovery power of Compressed Sensing (CS). Object tracking is a hot topic in computer vision. Thanks to the booming of the very high resolution (VHR) remote sensing techniques, it is now possible to track targets of interests in satellite videos. However, since the targets in the satellite videos are usually too small compared with the entire image, and too similar with the background, most state-of-the-art algorithms failed to track the target in satellite videos with a satisfactory accuracy. In place of tracking annotations, we first hallucinate videos from images with bounding box annotations using zoom-in/out motion transformations to obtain free tracking labels. We add video simulation augmentations to create a diverse tracking dataset, albeit with simple motion. Next, to tackle harder tracking cases, we mine hard examples across an unlab…

Object tracking is a long standing problem in vision. While great efforts have been spent to improve tracking performance, a simple yet reliable prior knowledge is left unexploited: the target object in tracking must be an object other than non-object. Thus motivated, in this paper we propose to adapt objectness for visual object tracking. Instead of directly applying an existing objectness measure that is generic and handles various objects and environments, we adapt it to b…
