The spontaneous transformations associated with symmetry-breaking phase transitions generate domain structures and defects that may be topological in nature. The formation of these defects can be described according to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, which provides a generic relation that applies from cosmological to interatomic lengthscales. Its verification is challenging, however, in particular at the cosmological scale where experiments are impractical. While it has been demonstrated for selected condensed-matter systems, major questions remain regarding e.g. its degree of universality. Here we develop a global Kibble-Zurek picture from the condensed-matter level. We show theoretically that a transition between two fluctuation regimes (Ginzburg and mean-field) can lead to an intermediate region with reversed scaling, and we verify experimentally this behavior for the structural transition in the series of multiferroic hexagonal manganites. Trends across the series allow us to identify additional intrinsic features of the defect formation beyond the original Kibble-Zurek paradigm.
We have used a shell model to study the phonon dynamics of multiferroic manganites RMnO3 (R= Tb, Dy, Ho). The calculated phonon dynamical properties, crystal structure, Raman frequencies and specific heat are found to be in good agreement with the available experimental data. Besides, the phonon density of states, elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves along high symmetry directions (sigma, delta and lambda) have also been computed. A zone-center imaginary Au mode is revealed in these phonon dispersion curves, which indicates the occurrence of metastability of the perovskite phase. The…
We report a study of magnetic dynamics in multiferroic hexagonal manganite HoMnO3 by far-infrared spectroscopy. Low-temperature magnetic excitation spectrum of HoMnO3 consists of magnetic-dipole transitions of Ho ions within the crystal-field split J=8 manifold and of the triangular antiferromagnetic resonance of Mn ions. We determine the effective spin Hamiltonian for the Ho ion ground state. The magnetic-field splitting of the Mn antiferromagnetic resonance allows us to measure the magnetic exchange coupling between the rare-earth and Mn ions.
Many multiferroic materials, with various chemical compositions and crystal structures, have been discovered in the past years. Among these multiferroics, some perovskite manganites with ferroelectricity driven by magnetic orders are of particular interest. In these multiferroic perovskite manganites, not only their multiferroic properties are quite prominent, but also the involved physical mechanisms are very plenty and representative. In this Brief Review, we will introduce some recent theoretical and experimental progress on multiferroic manganites.
Using first-principles calculations we examine the band structures of ferromagnetic hexagonal manganites $\mathrm{YXO_3}$ (X=V, Cr, Mn, Fe and Co) in the nonpolar nonsymmorphic $P6_3/mmc$ space group. For $\mathrm{YVO_3}$ and $\mathrm{YCrO_3}$ we find a band inversion near the Fermi energy that generates a nodal ring in the $k_z=0$ mirror plane. We perform a more detailed analysis for these compounds and predict the existence of the topological "drumhead" surface states. Finally, we briefly discuss the low-symmetry polar phases (space group $P6_3cm$) of these systems, and show they can undergo…
The phase diagram of quarter-hole-doped perovskite manganites is investigated using the doubleexchange model. An exotic striped type-II multiferroic phase, where 25% of the nearest-neighbor spin couplings are orthogonal to each other, is found in the narrow-bandwidth region. Comparing with the spiral-spin ordering phase of undoped manganites, the multiferroic Curie temperature of the new phase is estimated to be ~4 times higher, while the ferroelectric polarization is similar in magnitude. Our study provides a path for noncollinear spin multiferroics based on electronic self-organization, diff…
Field-induced switching of ferroelectric domains with a topological vortex configuration is studied by atomic imaging and electrical biasing in an electron microscope, revealing the role of topological defects on the topologically-guided change of domain-wall pairs in a hexagonal manganite.
Charge-ordered rare earth manganites Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3, La0.25Nd0.25Ca0.5MnO3, Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3 are found to exhibit dielectric constant anomalies around the charge-ordering or the magnetic transition temperatures. Magnetic fields have a marked effect on the dielectric properties, indicating the presence of coupling between the magnetic and electrical order parameters. The observation of magnetoferroelectricity in these manganites is in accord with the recent theoretical predictions of Khomskii and coworkers.
We use resonant and non-resonant X-ray diffraction measurements in combination with first-principles electronic structure calculations and Monte Carlo simulations to study the relationship between crystal structure and multiferroic orders in the orthorhombic perovskite manganites, o-$R$MnO$_3$ ($R$ is a rare-earth cation or Y). In particular, we focus on how the internal lattice parameters (Mn-O bond lengths and Mn-O-Mn bond angles) evolve under chemical pressure and epitaxial strain, and the effect of these structural variations on the microscopic exchange interactions and long-range magnetic…
We use a combination of symmetry analysis, phenomenological modelling and first-principles density functional theory to explore the interplay between the magnetic ground state and the detailed atomic structure in the hexagonal rare-earth manganites. We find that the magnetic ordering is sensitive to a breathing mode distortion of the Mn and O ions in the $ab$ plane, which is described by the K\textsubscript{1} mode of the high-symmetry structure. Our density functional calculations of the magnetic interactions indicate that this mode particularly affects the single-ion anisotropy and the inter…
Hexagonal ferrites (h-RFeO$_3$, R=Y, Dy-Lu) have recently been identified as a new family of multiferroic complex oxides. The coexisting spontaneous electric and magnetic polarizations make h-RFeO$_3$ rare-case ferroelectric ferromagnets at low temperature. Plus the room-temperature multiferroicity and predicted magnetoelectric effect, h-RFeO$_3$ are promising materials for multiferroic applications. Here we review the structural, ferroelectric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric properties of h-RFeO$_3$. The thin film growth is also discussed because it is critical in making high quality single cr…
An incommensurate phase refers to a solid state in which the period of a superstructure is incommensurable with the primitive unit cell. Recently the incommensurate phase is induced by applying an in-plane strain to hexagonal manganites, which demonstrates single chiral modulation of six domain variants. Here we employ Landau theory in combination with the phase-field method to investigate the incommensurate phase in hexagonal manganites. It is shown that the equilibrium wave length of the incommensurate phase is determined by temperature and the magnitude of the applied strain, and a temperat…
We show that the improper ferroelectric phase transition in the multiferroic hexagonal manganites displays the same symmetry-breaking characteristics as those proposed in early-universe theories. We present an analysis of the Kibble-Zurek theory of topological defect formation applied to the hexagonal manganites, discuss the conditions determining the range of cooling rates in which Kibble-Zurek behavior is expected, and show that recent literature data are consistent with our predictions. We explore experimentally for the first time to our knowledge the cross-over out of the Kibble-Zurek regi…
Complete magnetoelectric (ME) phase diagrams of orthorhombic $R$MnO$_{3}$ with and without magnetic moments on the $R$ ions have been established. Three kinds of multiferroic ground states, the $ab$-cycloidal, the $bc$-cycloidal, and the collinear $E$-type phases, have been identified by the distinct ME responses. The electric polarization of the $E$-type phase dominated by the symmetric spin exchange ($bm{S}_{i} cdot bm{S}_{j}$) is more than 10 times as large as that of the $bc$-cycloidal phase dominated by the antisymmetric one ($bm{S}_{i} times bm{S}_{j}$), and the ME response is enhanced n…
Multiferroic rare earth manganites attracted recent attention because of the coexistence of different types of magnetic and ferroelectric orders resulting in complex phase diagrams and a wealth of physical phenomena. The coupling and mutual interference of the different orders and the large magnetoelectric effect observed in several compounds are of fundamental interest and bear the potential for future applications in which the dielectric (magnetic) properties can be modified by the onset of a magnetic (dielectric) transition or the application of a magnetic (electric) field. The physical mec…
The controversy regarding the ferroelectric behavior of hexagonal InMnO$_3$ is resolved by using a combination of x-ray diffraction (XRD), piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), second harmonic generation (SHG), and density functional theory (DFT). While XRD data show a symmetry-lowering unit-cell tripling, which is also found in the multiferroic hexagonal manganites of $P6_3cm$ symmetry, PFM and SHG do not detect ferroelectricity at ambient or low temperature, in striking contrast to the behavior in the multiferroic counterparts. We propose instead a centrosymmetric $P\bar{3}c$ phase as the gr…
Magnetoelectric phase diagrams of the perovskite manganites, Eu1-xYxMnO3 and Gd1-xTbxMnO3, are theoretically studied. We first construct a microscopic model, and then analyze the model using the Monte-Carlo method. We reproduce the diagrams, which contain two different multiferroic states, i.e., the ab-plane spin cycloid with electric polarization P//a and the bc-plane spin cycloid with P//c. We reveal that their competition originates from a conflict between the single-ion anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction, which is controlled by the second-neighbor spin exchanges enhanced b…
Magnetoelectric (ME) materials are of fundamental interest and show broad potential for technological applications. Commonly the dominant contribution to the ME response is the lattice-mediated one, which is proportional to both the Born electric charge $Z^{\rm e}$ and its analogue, the dynamical magnetic charge $Z^{\rm m}$. Our previous study has shown that exchange striction acting on noncollinear spins induces much larger magnetic charges than those that depend on spin-orbit coupling. The hexagonal manganites $R$MnO$_3$ and ferrites $R$FeO$_3$ ($R$ = Sc, Y, In, Ho-Lu) exhibit strong couplin…
The crystal and magnetic structures of single-crystalline hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ films have been studied using x-ray, electron and neutron diffraction methods. The polar structure of these films are found to persist up to 1050 K; and the switchability of the polar behavior is observed at room temperature, indicating ferroelectricity. An antiferromagnetic order was shown to occur below 440 K, followed by a spin reorientation resulting in a weak ferromagnetic order below 130 K. This observation of coexisting multiple ferroic orders demonstrates that hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ films are room-temperature mu…
Hexagonal RMnO3 manganites are improper ferroelectrics in which the electric polarization is a by-product of the tripling of the unit cell. In YMnO3, there is a second transition at ~ 920K whose nature remains unexplained. We argue that this transition can be seen as a sort of hidden order in which a residual symmetry displayed by the trimerization order parameter is spontaneously broken. This additional order gives rise to twelve structural domains instead of six, and structural domain boundaries that can be either ferroelectric or non-ferroelectric domain walls.
In this contribution to the special issue on multiferroics we focus on multiferroicity driven by different forms of charge ordering. We will present the generic mechanisms by which charge ordering can induce ferroelectricity in magnetic systems. There is a number of specific classes of materials for which this is relevant. We will discuss in some detail $(i)$ perovskite manganites of the type (PrCa)MnO$_3$, $(ii)$ the complex and interesting situation in magnetite Fe$_3$O$_4$, $(iii)$ strongly ferroelectric frustrated LuFe$_2$O$_4$, $(iv)$ an example of a quasi one-dimensional organic system. …
The behavior of the low-frequency electromagnon in multiferroic DyMnO3 has been investigated in external magnetic fields and in a magnetically ordered state. Significant softening of the electromagnon frequency is observed for external magnetic fields parallel to the a-axis (BIIa), revealing a number of similarities to a classical soft mode behavior known for ferroelectric phase transitions. The softening of the electromagnon yields an increase of the static dielectric permittivity which follows a similar dependence as predicted by the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation. Within the geometry BIIb th…
We present the results of detailed dielectric investigations of the relaxation dynamics in DyMnO$_3$ multiferroic manganite. Strong low-frequency relaxation process near the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition is observed. The high frequency mode is directly to the relaxational motion of multiferroic domain walls. We provide an experimental evidence that this relaxation mode corresponds to a chirality switching of the spin cycloid in DyMnO$_3$. We demonstrate that the relaxation dynamics in DyMnO$_3$ is typical for an order-disorder phase transition and may be understood within a simpl…
Hexagonal manganites REMnO3 (RE, rare earths) have attracted significant attention due to their potential applications as multiferroic materials and the intriguing physics associated with the topological defects. The two-dimensional (2D) and 3D domain and vortex structure evolution of REMnO3 is predicted using the phase-field method based on a thermodynamic potential constructed from first-principles calculations. In 3D spaces, vortex lines show three types of topological changes, i.e. shrinking, coalescence, and splitting, with the latter two caused by the interaction and exchange of vortex l…
In the multiferroic hexagonal manganite HoMnO3, inelastic neutron scattering and synchrotron based THz spectroscopy have been used to investigate the spin waves associated to the Mn order together with Ho crystal field excitations. While the Mn order sets in first below 80 K, a spin reorientation occurs below 37 K, a rare feature in the rare earth manganites. We show that severalHo crystal field excitations are present in the same energy range as the magnons, and that they are all affected by the spin reorientation. Moreover, several anomalous features are observed in the excitations at low te…
Orthorhombically distorted perovskite manganites, RMnO3 with R being a trivalent rare-earth ion, exhibit a variety of magnetic and electric phases including multiferroic (i.e. concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric) phases and fascinating magnetoelectric phenomena. We theoretically study the phase diagram of RMnO3 by constructing a microscopic spin model, which includes not only the superexchange interaction but also the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI). Analysis of this model using the Monte-Carlo method reproduces the experimental phase diagrams as …
Structural features of ferroic domains are fundamentally important for the understanding of microstructure and physical properties of ferroic materials, and they are also of technological significance for information storage and electronic switches. There are three well-known forms of ferroic orders in correlation with the spontaneous magnetization, electric polarization, and spontaneous strain, respectively. Ferroelectricity often accompanies ferroelastic strain, so ferroelectric domains tend to form in simple elongated configurations. However, due to strong boundary conditions, ferroelectric…
The improper ferroelectricity in YMnO$_3$ and other related multiferroic hexagonal manganites are known to cause topologically protected ferroelectric domains that give rise to rich and diverse physical phenomena. The local structure and structural coherence across the ferroelectric transition, however, were previously not well understood. Here we reveal the evolution of the local structure with temperature in YMnO$_3$ using neutron total scattering techniques, and interpret them with the help of first-principles calculations. The results show that, at room temperature, the local and average s…
Magnetodielectric materials are characterized by a strong coupling of magnetic and dielectric properties and in rare cases simultaneously exhibit both, magnetic and polar order. Among other multiferroics, TbMnO3 and GdMnO3 reveal a strong magneto-dielectric (ME) coupling and as a consequence fundamentally new spin excitations exist: Electro-active magnons, or electromagnons, i. e. spin waves which can be excited by ac electric fields. Here we show that these excitations appear in the phase with an incommensurate (IC) magnetic structure of the manganese spins. In external magnetic fields this I…
We present a detailed dielectric study of the relaxation effects that occur in several perovskite rare-earth manganites, including the multiferroics TbMnO3 and DyMnO3. We demonstrate that the strong magnetocapacitive effects, observed for electrical fields E||c, are nearly completely governed by magnetic-state induced changes of the relaxation parameters. The multiferroic materials, which undergo a transition into a spiral magnetic state, show qualitatively different relaxation behavior than those compounds transferring into an A-type antiferromagnetic state. We ascribe the relaxations in both…
Manipulate and control of spin wave and spin flip are crucial for future developments of magnonic and spintronic devices. We present that the spin wave in hexagonal LuMnO3 single crystal can be selectively excited with laser polarization perpendicular to the c-axis of hexagonal LuMnO3 and photon energy ~ 1.8 eV. The selective excitation of spin wave also suggests that the spin flip can be selectively controlled in hexagonal manganites. In addition, the physical origin of spin wave correlated with spin flip in hexagonal manganites is discussed.
We fabricated epitaxial thin films of hexagonal DyMnO3, which otherwise form in a bulk perovskite structure, via deposition on Pt(111)//Al2O3 (0001) and YSZ(111) substrates: each of which has in-plane hexagonal symmetry. The polarization hysteresis loop demonstrated the existence of ferroelectricity in our hexagonal DyMnO3 films at least below 70 K. The observed 2.2 uC/cm^2 remnant polarization at 25 K corresponded to a polarization enhancement by a factor of 10 compared to that of the bulk orthorhombic DyMnO3. Interestingly, this system showed an antiferroelectric-like feature in its hysteres…
We present a microscopic first-principles study of the neutral structural domain walls (DWs) in the multiferroic hexagonal manganites, which have been shown to exhibit cross-couplings between ferroelectricity and struc- tural antiphase. We find that, in contradiction with previously proposed models, the interlocked antiphase- ferroelectric domain walls have approximately zero width, and their energy is lower than that of antiphase-only or ferroelectric-only domain walls. Furthermore, we show that the ferroelectric-only and antiphase-only DWs are superpositions of interlocked antiphase ferroele…
Spectra of transmission and reflection coefficients of single crystalline Y-type hexaferrite Ba_(2)Mg_(2)Fe_(12)O_(22) are measured at Terahertz and infrared frequencies, 3 - 4500 c--1, and at temperatures 10 to 300 K, for polarization E prp c. Oscillator parameters of nineteen phonon lines allowed by the R3m crystal lattice symmetry are determined. Absorption lines assignment to vibrational modes of the lattice structural fragments is performed. Below the temperatures of 195 K and 50 K, corresponding to the zero field phase transitions to the proper screw and to the longitudinal-conical spin …
Structural changes in REMnO3 (RE= Y, Ho, Lu) under high pressure were examined by synchrotron x-ray diffraction methods at room temperature. Compression occurs more readily in the ab plane than along the c-axis. Under hydrostatic pressure (~11 GPa), the atoms hold their approximate ambient fractional positions in the unit cell and the spontaneous polarization shows no significant change. With increased pressure, a pressure-induced hexagonal to orthorhombic phase transition was observed starting at ~ 22GPa for Lu(Y)MnO3. A small volume fraction of Lu(Y)MnO3 is converted to the orthorhombic phas…
Improper ferroelectricity (trimerization) in the hexagonal manganites RMnO$_3$ leads to a network of coupled structural and magnetic vortices that induce domain wall magnetoelectricity and magnetization neither of which, however, occurs in the bulk. Here we combined first-principles calculations, group-theoretic techniques, and microscopic spin models to show how the trimerization not only induces a polarization but also a bulk magnetization and bulk magnetoelectric (ME) effect. This results in the existence of a bulk linear ME vortex structure or a bulk ME coupling such that if direction of p…
The magnetic interaction between rare-earth and Fe ions in hexagonal rare-earth ferrites (h-REFeO3), may amplify the weak ferromagnetic moment on Fe, making these materials more appealing as multiferroics. To elucidate the interaction strength between the rare-earth and Fe ions as well as the magnetic moment of the rare-earth ions, element specific magnetic characterization is needed. Using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we have studied the ferrimagnetism in h-YbFeO3 by measuring the magnetization of Fe and Yb separately. The results directly show anti-alignment of magnetization of Yb and …
Ferroelectric materials possess a spontaneous electric polarization and may be utilized in various technological applications ranging from non-volatile memories to solar cells and light polarizers. Recently, hexagonal rare-earth manganites, h-RMnO$_3$ (R is a rare-earth ion) have attracted considerable interest due to their intricate multiferroic properties and improper ferroelectricity characterized by a sizable remnant polarization and high Curie temperature. Here, we demonstrate that these compounds can serve as very efficient photovoltaic materials and, in addition, possess remarkable opti…
Ferroelectric domain walls are attracting broad attention as atomic-scale switches, diodes and mobile wires for next-generation nanoelectronics. Charged domain walls in improper ferroelectrics are particularly interesting as they offer multifunctional properties and an inherent stability not found in proper ferroelectrics. Here we study the energetics and structure of charged walls in improper ferroelectric YMnO$_3$, InMnO$_3$ and YGaO$_3$ by first principles calculations and phenomenological modeling. Positively and negatively charged walls are asymmetric in terms of local structure and width…
Hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ has drawn a lot of research attention due to its contentious room-temperature multiferroicity. Due to the unstability of hexagonal phase in the bulk form, most experimental studies focused on LuFeO$_3$ thin films which can be stabilized by strain using proper substrates. Here we report on the hexagonal phase stabilization, magnetism, and magnetoelectric coupling of bulk LuFeO$_3$ by partial Sc-substitution of Lu. First, our first-principles calculations show that the hexagonal structure can be stabilized by partial Sc substitution, while the multiferroic properties includin…
Conductive and electrostatic atomic force microscopy (cAFM and EFM) are used to investigate the electric conduction at nominally neutral domain walls in hexagonal manganites. The EFM measurements reveal a propensity of mobile charge carriers to accumulate at the nominally neutral domain walls in ErMnO3, which is corroborated by cAFM scans showing locally enhanced d.c. conductance. Our findings are explained based on established segregation enthalpy profiles for oxygen vacancies and interstitials, providing a microscopic model for previous, seemingly disconnected observations ranging from insul…
We have investigated the effects of substituting In for Mn on the antiferromagnetic phase transition in YMnO3 using magnetic, dielectric, and specific heat measurements. We prepared a set of isostructural phase pure hexagonal YMn$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$O$_{3}$ samples having x=0 to x=0.9, which exhibit a systematic decrease of the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature with increasing In content. The multiferroic phase, which develops below TN, appears to be completely suppressed for x$\geq$0.5 in the temperature range investigated, which can be attributed solely to the dilution of magnetic interactio…
We report an investigation of hexagonal Y_(1-x)Eu_xMnO_3 ceramics with x=0, 0.1 and 0.2 using infrared and THz spectroscopies in the temperature range between 5 and 900 K. The temperature dependence of the THz permittivity reveals a kink near the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature T_N ~ 70 K giving evidence of a strong spin-lattice coupling. Below T_N two absorption peaks were revealed in the THz spectra close to 43 and 73 cm-1. While the first peak corresponds to a sharp antiferromagnetic resonance exhibiting softening on heating towards TN, the second one may be attributed to an …
The ferroelectric phase of the multiferroic hexagonal manganites (h-ReMnO3) has been reported to undergo a series of magnetic transitions involving long-range ordering/reorientation of 4fRe3+ and/or 3dMn3+ spins below room temperature. These transitions have attracted a lot of attention in recent years due to the geometrically frustrated nature of magnetic interactions. We have revisited these transitions in high quality single crystals of h-DyMnO3 using dc and ac susceptibility measurements as a function of temperature (T), magnetic field (H) and frequency (w) supplemented by specific heat me…
The origin of the spiral spin-order in perovskite multiferroic manganites $R$MnO$_{3}$ ($RE=$ Tb or Dy) is here investigated using a two $e_{\rm g}$-orbitals double-exchange model. Our main result is that the experimentally observed spiral phase can be stabilized by introducing a relatively weak next-nearest-neighbor superexchange coupling ($\sim10%$ of the nearest-neighbor superexchange). Moreover, the Jahn-Teller lattice distortion is also shown to be essential to obtain a realistic spiral period. Supporting our conclusions, the generic phase diagram of undoped perovskite manganites is obtai…
PbFe12O19 (PFO) powders in hexagonal structure have been synthesized by sol-gel process using lead acetate, glycerin and ferric acetylacetonate as the precursor. PbFe12O19 ceramics were obtained by sintering the PbFe12O19 powders at 1000\degree C for 1 hour. Distorted flaky hexahedron grains are frequently observed in the SEM images of sintered PbFe12O19 ceramics. Large spontaneous polarization was observed in PbFe12O19 ceramic at room temperature, exhibiting a clear ferroelectric hysteresis loop. The remnant polarization of PbFe12O19 ceramic is estimated to be Pr~21μC/cm2. The distortion of h…
Recent spectroscopic studies at terahertz frequencies for a variety of multiferroics endowed with both ferroelectric and magnetic orders have revealed the possible emergence of a new collective excitation, frequently referred to as electromagnon. It is magnetic origin, but becomes active in response to the electric field component of light. Here we give an overview on our recent advance in the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy of electromagnons or electric-dipole active magnetic resonances, focused on perovskite manganites--$R$MnO$_3$ ($R$ denotes rare-earth ions). The respective electric and…
Hexagonal YMnO_3 with space group P63cm is one of the rare examples of multiferroic materials that exhibit co-dependence of a robust ferroelectric phase along with antiferromagnetic ordering. This is primarily ascribed to tilting of the MnO_5 polyhedra driven by magnetoelectric coupling. We report on the effect of magnetic field at the atomic level in YMnO_3 by utilizing magnetic field and temperature dependent neutron diffraction measurements. We show that near the Néel temperature the lattice parameters, effective magnetic moment per site, Mn-O bond lengths and O-Mn-O bond angles show large …
We report on the magnetic structure and ordering of hexagonal LuFeO3 films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) on YSZ (111) and Al2O3 (0001) substrates. Using a set of complementary probes including neutron diffraction, we find that the system magnetically orders into a ferromagnetically-canted antiferromagnetic state via a single transition between 138-155 K, while a paraelectric to ferroelectric transition occurs above 1000 K. The symmetry of the magnetic structure in the ferroelectric state implies that this material is a strong candidate for linear magnetoelectric coupling and control of…
Structural phase transitions described by Mexican hat potentials should in principle exhibit aspects of Higgs and Goldstone physics. Here, we investigate the relationship between the phonons that soften at such structural phase transitions and the Higgs- and Goldstone-boson analogues associated with the crystallographic Mexican hat potential. We show that, with the exception of systems containing only one atom type, the usual Higgs and Goldstone modes are represented by a combination of several phonon modes, with the lowest energy phonons of the relevant symmetry having substantial contributio…
We report on optical studies of the thin films of multiferroic hexagonal (P.G. 6mm) rare-earth orthoferrites RFeO3 (R=Ho, Er, Lu) grown epitaxially on a (111)-surface of ZrO2(Y2O3) substrate. The optical absorption study in the range of 0.6-5.6 eV shows that the films are transparent below 1.9 eV; above this energy four broad intense absorption bands are distinguished. The absorption spectra are analyzed taking into account the unusual fivefold coordination of the Fe(3+) ion. Temperature dependence of the optical absorption at 4.9 eV shows anomaly at 124 K, which we attribute to magnetic order…
Multiferroic hexagonal RMnO3 (R=rare earths) crystals exhibit dense networks of vortex lines at which six domain walls merge. While the domain walls can be readily moved with an applied electric field, the vortex cores were so far impossible to control. Our experiments demonstrate that shear strain induces a Magnus-type force pulling vortices and antivortices in opposite directions and unfolding them into a topological stripe domain state. We discuss the analogy between this effect and the current-driven dynamics of vortices in superconductors and superfluids.
The complex interplay between the 3d and 4f moments in hexagonal ErMnO3 is investigated by magnetization, optical second harmonic generation, and neutron-diffraction measurements. We revise the phase diagram and provide a microscopic model for the emergent spin structures with a special focus on the intermediary phase transitions. Our measurements reveal that the 3d exchange between Mn^{3+} ions dominates the magnetic symmetry at 10 K < T < T_N with Mn^3+ order according to the Gamma_4 representation triggering 4f ordering according to the same representation on the Er^{3+}(4b) site. Below 10 …
