This work presents epitaxial growth and optical spectroscopy of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) in (Cd,Zn,Mg)Te barriers placed on the top of (Cd,Zn,Mg)Te distributed Bragg reflector. The formed photonic mode in our half-cavity structure permits to enhance the local excitation intensity and extraction efficiency of the QD photoluminescence, while suppressing the reflectance within the spectral range covering the QD transitions. This allows to perform coherent, nonlinear, resonant spectroscopy of individual QDs. The coherence dynamics of a charged exciton is measured via four-wave mixing, with the estimated dephasing time $T_2=(210\,\pm\,40)$ ps. The same structure contains QDs doped with single Mn$^{2+}$ ions, as detected in photoluminescence spectra. Our work therefore paves the way toward investigating and controlling an exciton coherence coupled, via $s$,$p$-$d$ exchange interaction, with an individual spin of a magnetic dopant.
We study optical forces acting upon semiconductor quantum dots and the force driven motion of the dots in a colloid. In the spectral range of exciton transitions in uantum dots, when the photon energy is close to the exciton energy, the polarizability of the dots is drastically increased. It leads to a resonant increase of both the gradient and the scattering contributions to the optical force, which enables the efficient manipulation with the dots. We reveal that the optical grating of the colloid leads to the formation of a fluid photonic crystal with spatially periodic circulating fluxes an…
A theory of optical emission of quantum dot arrays in quantum microcavities is developed. The regime of the strong coupling between the quantum dots and photonic mode of the cavity is considered. The quantum dots are modeled as two-level systems. In the low pumping (linear) regime the emission spectra are mainly determined by the superradiant mode where the effective dipoles of the dots oscillate in phase. In the non-linear regime the superradiant mode is destroyed and the emission spectra are sensitive to the parity of quantum dot number. Further increase of the pumping results in the line wi…
We demonstrate a novel method for deterministic charging of InAs quantum dots embedded in photonic crystal nanoresonators using a unique vertical p-n-i-n junction within the photonic crystal membrane. Charging is confirmed by the observation of Zeeman splitting for magnetic fields applied in the Voigt configuration. Spectrally resolved photoluminescence measurements are complemented by polarization resolved studies that show the precise structure of the Zeeman quadruplet. Integration of quantum dots in nanoresonators strongly enhances far-field collection efficiency and paves the way for the e…
We theoretically investigate the magnitude and range of the photon-mediated interaction between two quantum dots embedded in a photonic crystal waveguide, including fabrication disorder both in the crystal and in the dot positioning. We find that disorder-induced light localization has a drastic effect on the excitation transfer rate - as compared to an ideal structure - and that this rate varies widely among different disorder configurations. Nevertheless, we also find that significant rates of 50 micro-eV at a range of 10 micro-meters can be achieved in realistic systems.
We have performed time-resolved spectroscopy on InAs quantum dot ensembles in photonic crystal membranes. The influence of the photonic crystal is investigated by varying the lattice constant systematically. We observe a strong slow down of the quantum dots' spontaneous emission rates as the two-dimensional bandgap is tuned through their emission frequencies. The measured band edges are in full agreement with theoretical predictions. We characterize the multi-exponential decay curves by their mean decay time and find enhancement of the spontaneous emission at the bandgap edges and strong inhib…
We use strain to statically tune the semiconductor band gap of individual InAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a GaAs photonic wire featuring very efficient single photon collection efficiency. Thanks to the geometry of the structure, we are able to shift the QD excitonic transition by more than 20 meV by using nano-manipulators to apply the stress. Moreover, owing to the strong transverse strain gradient generated in the structure, we can relatively tune two QDs located in the wire waveguide and bring them in resonance, opening the way to the observation of collective effects such as superradi…
We introduce a nanowire-based photonic crystal waveguide system capable of controllably mediating the photon coupling between two quantum dots which are macroscopically separated. Using a rigorous Green-function-based master equation approach, our two-dot system is shown to provide a wide range of interesting quantum regimes. In particular, we demonstrate the formation of long-lived entangled states and study the resonance fluorescence spectrum which contains clear signatures of the coupled quantum dot pair. Depending upon the operating frequency, one can obtain a modified Mollow triplet spect…
The main challenge in the development of non-classical light sources remains their brightness that limits the data transmission and processing rates as well as the realization of practical devices operating in the telecommunication range. To overcome this issue, we propose to utilize universal and flexible in-situ electron-beam lithography and hereby, we demonstrate a successful technology transfer to telecom wavelengths. As an example, we fabricate and characterize especially designed photonic structures with strain-engineered single InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots that are deterministically integra…
We demonstrate that the presence of charge around a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) strongly affects its optical properties and produces non-resonant coupling to the modes of a microcavity. We first show that, besides (multi)exciton lines, a QD generates a spectrally broad emission which efficiently couples to cavity modes. Its temporal dynamics shows that it is related to the Coulomb interaction between the QD (multi)excitons and carriers in the adjacent wetting layer. This mechanism can be suppressed by the application of an electric field, making the QD closer to an ideal two-level system.
Systems of photonic crystal cavities coupled to quantum dots are a promising architecture for quantum networking and quantum simulators. The ability to independently tune the frequencies of laterally separated quantum dots is a crucial component of such a scheme. Here, we demonstrate independent tuning of laterally separated quantum dots in photonic crystal cavities coupled by in-plane waveguides by implanting lines of protons which serve to electrically isolate different sections of a diode structure.
This chapter will primarily focus on the studies of quantum optics with semiconductor, epitaxially grown quantum dots embedded in photonic crystal cavities. We will start by giving brief introductions into photonic crystals and quantum dots, then proceed with the introduction to cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects, with a particular emphasis on the demonstration of these effects on the quantum dot-photonic crystal platform. Finally, we will focus on the applications of such cavity QED effects.
The authors investigate the spontaneous emission dynamics of self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots embedded in GaAs photonic crystal waveguides. For an ensemble of dots coupled to guided modes in the waveguide we report spatially, spectrally, and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, detecting normal to the plane of the photonic crystal. For quantum dots emitting in resonance with the waveguide mode, a ~21x enhancement of photoluminescence intensity is observed as compared to dots in the unprocessed region of the wafer. This enhancement can be traced back to the Purcell enhanced emission …
We propose a method to generate a two-dimensional cluster state of polarization encoded photonic qubits from two coupled quantum dot emitters. We combine the recent proposal [N. H. Lindner and T. Rudolph, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 113602 (2009)] for generating 1-dimensional cluster state strings from a single dot, with a new proposal for an optically induced conditional phase (CZ) gate between the two quantum dots. The entanglement between the two quantum dots translates to entanglement between the two photonic cluster state strings. Further inter-pair coupling of the quantum dots using cavities a…
We report a valley photonic crystal (VPhC) waveguide in a GaAs slab with InAs quantum dots (QDs) as an internal light source exploited for experimental characterization of the waveguide. A topological interface state formed at the interface between two topologically-distinct VPhCs is used as the waveguide mode. We demonstrate robust propagation for near-infrared light emitted from the QDs even under the presence of sharp bends as a consequence of the topological protection of the guided mode. Our work will be of importance for developing robust photonic integrated circuits with small footprint…
The exact optical response of quantum few-level systems depends crucially on the exact choice of the incoming pulse areas. We use four-wave mixing (FWM) spectroscopy to infer the coherent response and dynamics of single InAs quantum dots (QDs) and study their pulse area dependence. By combining atomic force microscopy with FWM hyperspectral imaging, we show that the retrieved FWM signals originate from individual QDs enclosed in natural photonic defects. The optimized light-matter coupling in these defects allows us to perform our studies in a wide range of driving field amplitudes. When varyi…
We report on enhanced fluorescence of lead sulfide quantum dots interacting with leaky modes of slab-type silicon photonic crystals. The photonic crystal slabs were fabricated supporting leaky modes in the near infrared wavelength range. Lead sulfite quantum dots which are resonant the same spectral range were prepared in a thin layer above the slab. We selectively excited the leaky modes by tuning wavelength and angle of incidence of the laser source and measured distinct resonances of enhanced fluorescence. By an appropriate experiment design, we ruled out directional light extraction effect…
We report on the site-selected growth of bright single InAsP quantum dots embedded within InP photonic nanowire waveguides emitting at telecom wavelengths. We demonstrate a dramatic dependence of the emission rate on both the emission wavelength and the nanowire diameter. With an appropriately designed waveguide, tailored to the emission wavelength of the dot, an increase in count rate by nearly two orders of magnitude (0.4kcps to 35kcps) is obtained for quantum dots emitting in the telecom O-band. Using emission-wavelength-optimised waveguides, we demonstrate bright, narrow linewidth emission…
We present time-resolved emission experiments of semiconductor quantum dots in silicon 3D inverse-woodpile photonic band gap crystals. A systematic study is made of crystals with a range of pore radii to tune the band gap relative to the emission frequency. The decay rates averaged over all dipole orientations are inhibited by a factor of 10 in the photonic band gap and enhanced up to 2? outside the gap, in agreement with theory. We discuss the effects of spatial inhomogeneity, nonradiative decay, and transition dipole orientations on the observed inhibition in the band gap.
We report a study of the quantum dot emission in short photonic crystal waveguides. We observe that the quantum dot photoluminescence intensity and decay rate are strongly enhanced when the emission energy is in resonance with Fabry-Perot cavity modes in the slow-light regime of the dispersion curve. The experimental results are in agreement with previous theoretical predictions and further supported by three-dimensional finite element simulation. Our results show that the combination of slow group velocity and Fabry-Perot cavity resonance provides an avenue to efficiently channel photons from…
Silicon photonics enables scaling of quantum photonic systems by allowing the creation of extensive, low-loss, reconfigurable networks linking various functional on-chip elements. Inclusion of single quantum emitters onto photonic circuits, acting as on-demand sources of indistinguishable photons or single-photon nonlinearities, may enable large-scale chip-based quantum photonic circuits and networks. Towards this, we use low-temperature $\textit{in situ}$ electron-beam lithography to deterministically produce hybrid GaAs/Si$_3$N$_4$ photonic devices containing single InAs quantum dots precise…
We present measurements of the beta-factor, describing the coupling efficiency of light emitted by single InAs/GaAs semiconductor quantum dots into a photonic crystal waveguide mode. The beta-factor is evaluated by means of time-resolved frequency-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy. The emission wavelength of single quantum dots is temperature tuned across the band edge of a photonic crystal waveguide and the spontaneous emission rate is recorded. Decay rates up to 5.7 ns^(-1), corresponding to a Purcell factor of 5.2, are measured and beta-factors up to 85% are extracted. These results …
We use an optical fiber taper waveguide to probe PbS quantum dots (QDs) dried on Si photonic crystal cavities near 1.55 $μ$m. We demonstrate that a low density ($\lesssim 100 μ$m$^{-2}$) of QDs does not significantly degrade cavity quality factors as high as $\approx3\times10^4$. We also show that the tapered fiber can be used to excite the QDs and collect the subsequent cavity-filtered photoluminescence, and present measurements of reversible photodarkening and QD saturation. This method represents an important step towards spectroscopy of single colloidal QDs in the telecommunications band.
We demonstrate the ability to control the spontaneous emission dynamics of self-assembled quantum dots via the local density of optical modes in 2D-photonic crystals. We show that an incomplete 2D photonic bandgap is sufficient to significantly lengthen the spontaneous emission lifetime ($>2\times$) over a wide bandwidth ($Δλ\geq40$ nm). For dots that are both \textit{spectrally} and \textit{spatially} coupled to strongly localized ($V_{mode}\sim1.5(λ/n)^{3}$), high $Q\sim2700$ optical modes, we have directly measured a strong Purcell enhanced shortening of the emission lifetime $\geq5.6\times…
Interfacing single emitters and photonic nanostructures enables modifying their emission properties, such as enhancing individual decay rates or controlling the emission direction. To achieve full control, the single emitter must be positioned in the nanostructures deterministically. Here, we use spectroscopy to gain spectral and spatial information about individual quantum dots in order to position each emitter in a pre-determined location in a unit cell of a photonic-crystal waveguide. Depending on the spatial and spectral positioning within the structured nanophotonic mode, we observe that …
We introduce a new platform for realizing on-chip quantum electrodynamics using photonic crystal waveguide structures comprised of periodic nanowire arrays with embedded semiconductor quantum dots to act as quantum light sources. These nanowire-based structures, which can now be fabricated with excellent precision, are found to produce waveguide Purcell factors exceeding 100 and on-chip beta factors up to 99%. We investigate the fundamental optical properties of photonic crystal waveguides and finite-size structures using both photonic band structure calculations and rigorous Green function co…
Quantum nanophotonics has become a new research frontier where quantum optics is combined with nanophotonics in order to enhance and control the interaction between strongly confined light and quantum emitters. Such progress provides a promising pathway towards quantum-information processing on an all-solid-state platform. Here we review recent progress on experiments with single quantum dots in nanophotonic structures. Embedding the quantum dots in photonic band-gap structures offers a way of controlling spontaneous emission of single photons to a degree that is determined by the local light-…
Indistinguishable single photons are necessary for quantum information processing applications. Resonant or quasiresonant excitation of single quantum dots provides greater single photon indistinguishability than incoherent pumping, but is also more challenging experimentally. Here, we demonstrate high signal to noise quasiresonant excitation of InP/InGaP quantum dots. The excitation is provided via second harmonic generated from a telecommunications wavelength laser resonant with the fundamental mode of a photonic crystal cavity, fabricated at twice the quantum dot transition wavelength. The …
We show unusual cooperative two-photon resonance between two-modes of field inside a photonic crystal cavity. The two-photon resonance occurs when two off resonant quantum dots emit one photon in each cavity mode and de-excite simultaneously. In the presence of phonon coupling the conditions for two-photon resonance change significantly. Using such two-photon two-mode interaction we propose to generate entangled state of two qutrits. The basis of a qutrit are formed by the state of the cavity mode containing $0$, $1$ and $2$ photons. We also discuss effect of phonon coupling on negativity of t…
Quantum dots are both excellent single-photon sources and hosts for single spins. This combination enables the deterministic generation of Raman-photons -- bandwidth-matched to an atomic quantum-memory -- and the generation of photon cluster states, a resource in quantum communication and measurement-based quantum computing. GaAs quantum dots in AlGaAs can be matched in frequency to a rubidium-based photon memory, and have potentially improved electron spin coherence compared to the widely used InGaAs quantum dots. However, their charge stability and optical linewidths are typically much worse…
We study the mutual interaction between two identical quantum dots coupled to the normal modes of two-site photonic crystal molecules in a planar waveguide geometry, i.e. photonic crystal dimers. We find that the radiative coupling between the two quantum emitters is maximized when they are in resonance with either the bonding or the antibonding modes of the coupled cavity system. Moreover, we find that such effective interdot coupling is sizable, in the meV range, and almost independent from the cavities distance, as long as a normal mode splitting exceeding the radiative linewidth can be est…
Using a polaron master equation approach we investigate the resonance fluorescence spectra from coherently driven quantum dots (QDs) coupled to an acoustic phonon bath and a photonic crystal waveguide with a rich local density of photon states (LDOS). Resonance fluorescence spectra from QDs in semiconductor crystals are known to show strong signatures of electron-phonon interactions, but when coupled to a structured photonic reservoir, the QD emission properties are also determined by the frequency dependence of the LDOS of the photon reservoir. Here, we investigate the simultaneous role of co…
Implementations for quantum computing require fast single- and multi-qubit quantum gate operations. In the case of optically controlled quantum dot qubits theoretical designs for long-range two- or multi-qubit operations satisfying all the requirements in quantum computing are not yet available. We have developed a design for a fast, long-range two-qubit gate mediated by a photonic microcavity mode using excited states of the quantum dot-cavity system that addresses these needs. This design does not require identical qubits, it is compatible with available optically induced single qubit operat…
Photonic nanostructures provide means of tailoring the interaction between light and matter and the past decade has witnessed a tremendous experimental and theoretical progress in this subject. In particular, the combination with semiconductor quantum dots has proven successful. This manuscript reviews quantum optics with excitons in single quantum dots embedded in photonic nanostructures. The ability to engineer the light-matter interaction strength in integrated photonic nanostructures enables a range of fundamental quantum-electrodynamics experiments on, e.g., spontaneous-emission control, …
We develop a general microscopic theory describing the phonon decoherence of quantum dots and indistinguishability of the emitted photons in photonic structures. The coherence is found to depend fundamentally on the dimensionality of the structure resulting in vastly different performance for quantum dots embedded in a nano-cavity (0D), waveguide (1D), slab (2D), or bulk medium (3D). In bulk, we find a striking temperature dependence of the dephasing rate scaling as $T^{11}$ implying that phonons are effectively 'frozen out' for $T \lesssim 4 \mathrm{K}$. The phonon density of states is strong…
We explore the dynamics and directionality of spontaneous emission from self-assembled In(Ga)As quantum dots into TE-polarised guided modes in GaAs two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides. The local group velocity of the guided waveguide mode is probed, with values as low as $\sim 1.5\%\times c$ measured close to the slow-light band edge. By performing complementary continuous wave and time-resolved measurements with detection along, and perpendicular to the waveguide axis we probe the fraction of emission into the waveguide mode ($β$-factor). For dots randomly positioned within the unit c…
We experimentally probe the non-resonant feeding of photons into the optical mode of a two dimensional photonic crystal nanocavity from the discrete emission from a quantum dot. For a strongly coupled system of a single exciton and the cavity mode, we track the detuning-dependent photoluminescence intensity of the polariton peaks at different lattice temperatures. At low temperatures we observe a clear asymmetry in the emission intensity depending on whether the exciton is at higher or lower energy than the cavity mode. At high temperatures this asymmetry vanishes when the probabilities to emi…
We report on a combined photoluminescence imaging and atomic force microscopy study of single, isolated self-assembled InAs quantum dots (density <0.01 um^(-2) capped by a 95 nm GaAs layer, and emitting around 950 nm. By combining optical and scanning probe characterization techniques, we determine the position of single quantum dots with respect to comparatively large (100 nm to 1000 nm in-plane dimension) topographic features. We find that quantum dots often appear (>25% of the time) in the vicinity of these features, but generally do not exhibit significant differences in their non-resonant…
We derive a general formalism to model the polariton states resulting from the radiation-matter interaction between an arbitrary number of excitonic transitions in semiconductor quantum dots and photon modes in a photonic crystal structure in which the quantum dots are embedded. The Maxwell equations, including the linear nonlocal susceptibility of the exciton transitions in the quantum dots, are cast into an eigenvalue problem, which can be applied to any structure whose photon modes can be computed with reliable accuracy, and in addition naturally allows for disorder effects to be taken into…
Electron-phonon coupling in semiconductor quantum dots plays a significant role in determining the optical properties of excited excitons, especially the spectral nature of emitted photons. This paper presents a comprehensive theory and analysis of emission spectra from artificial atoms or quantum dots coupled to structured photon reservoirs and acoustic phonons, when excited with incoherent pump fields. As specific examples of structured reservoirs, we chose a Lorentzian cavity and a coupled cavity waveguide, which are of current experimental interest. For the case of optical cavities, we dir…
We propose a method to generate path-entangled $N00N$-state photons from quantum dots (QDs) and coupled nanocavities. In the systems we considered, cavity mode frequencies are tuned close to the biexciton two-photon resonance. Under appropriate conditions, the system can have the target $N00N$ state in the energy eigenstate, as a consequence of destructive quantum interference. The $N00N$ state can be generated by the resonant laser excitation. This method, first introduced for two-photon $N00N$ state ($N=2$), can be extended toward higher $N00N$ state ($N>2$) based on our recipe, which is app…
Quantum-dot-in-nanowire systems constitute building blocks for advanced photonics and sensing applications. The electronic symmetry of the emitters impacts their function capabilities. Here, we study the fine structure of gallium-rich quantum dots nested in the shell of GaAs-AlGaAs core-shell nanowires. We used optical spectroscopy to resolve the splitting resulting from the exchange terms and extract the main parameters of the emitters. Our results indicate that the quantum dots can host neutral as well as charges excitonic complexes and that the excitons exhibit a slightly elongated footprin…
Highly entangled graph states of photons have applications in universal quantum computing and in quantum communications. In the latter context, they have been proposed as the key ingredient in the establishment of long-distance entanglement across quantum repeater networks. Recently, a general deterministic approach to generate repeater graph states from quantum emitters was given. However, a detailed protocol for the generation of such states from realistic systems is still needed in order to guide experiments. Here, we provide such explicit protocols for the generation of repeater graph stat…
The effective entrapment of Carbon dots (CDs) into a polymer-silica hybrid matrix, formed as free standing transparent flexible films, is presented. CDs of 3 nm mean size with strong photoluminescence are embedded into a silica matrix during the sol-gel procedure, using tetraethylorthosilicate and F127 triblock copolymer as the structure directing agent under acidic conditions. The final hybrid nanostructure forms free standing transparent films that show high flexibility and long term stable CDs luminescence indicating the protective character of the hybrid matrix. It is crucial that the phot…
Semiconductor quantum dots embedded in photonic-crystal nanostructures have been the subject of intense study. In this context, quantum dots are often considered to be simple two-level emitters, i.e., the complexities arising from the internal finestructure are neglected. We show that due to the intricate spatial variations of the electric field polarization found in photonic crystal, the two orthogonal finestructure states of quantum dots in general both couple significantly to a cavity mode, implying that the two-level description is not sufficient. As a consequence the emission dynamics and…
Spontaneous emission from excitonic transitions in InAs/GaAs quantum dots embedded in photonic crystal waveguides at 5K into non-guided and guided modes is determined by direct hyperspectral imaging. This enables measurement of the absolute coupling efficiency into the guided modes, the beta-factor, directly, without assumptions on decay rates used previously. Notably, we found beta-factors above 90% over a wide spectral range of 40meV in the fast light regime, reaching a maximum of (99 $\pm$ 1)%. We measure the directional emission of the circularly polarized transitions in a magnetic field i…
Integrated quantum photonic circuits (IQPCs) with deterministically integrated quantum emitters are critical elements for scalable quantum information applications and have attracted significant attention in recent years. However, scaling up them towards fully functional photonic circuits with multiple deterministically integrated quantum emitters to generate photonic input states remains a great challenge. In this work, we report on a monolithic prototype IQPC consisting of two pre-selected quantum dots deterministically integrated into nanobeam cavities at the input ports of a 2x2 multimode …
We provide a microscopic theory for semiconductor quantum dots that explains the pronounced deviations from the prevalent point-dipole description that were recently observed in spectroscopic experiments on quantum dots in photonic nanostructures. At the microscopic level the deviations originate from structural inhomogeneities generating a large circular quantum current density that flows inside the quantum dot over mesoscopic length scales. The model is supported by the experimental data, where a strong variation of the multipolar moments across the emission spectrum of quantum dots is obser…
Future scalable photonic quantum information processing relies on the ability of integrating multiple interacting quantum emitters into a single chip. Quantum dots provide ideal on-chip quantum light sources. However, achieving quantum interaction between multiple quantum dots on-a-chip is a challenging task due to the randomness in their frequency and position, requiring local tuning technique and long-range quantum interaction. Here, we demonstrate quantum interactions between distant two quantum dots on a nanophotonic waveguide. We achieve a photon-mediated long-range interaction by integra…
The coupling between single photon emitters and integrated photonic circuits is an emerging topic relevant for quantum information science and other nanophotonic applications. We investigate the coupling between a hybrid system of colloidal quantum dots and propagating gap modes of a silicon nitride waveguide system. We furthermore explore the density of optical states of the system by using a scanning probe technique and find that the quantum dots couple significantly to the photonic circuit. Our results indicate that a scalable slot-waveguide might serve as a promising platform in future dev…
We study the optical emission from single semiconductor quantum dots coupled to the optical modes of photonic crystal nanocavities. For dots that are both spectrally and spatially coupled, auto-correlation measurements reveal efficient single photon generation, with a drastically reduced lifetime due to the Purcell-effect. However, the multi-photon emission probability is enhanced compared to the same QD transition when it is detuned from the cavity mode by controlled $N_2$-deposition. This indicates the presence of an emission background that is shown to be related to the dot using photon cro…
Many photonic quantum information processing applications would benefit from a high brightness, fiber-coupled source of triggered single photons. Here, we present a fiber-coupled photonic-crystal waveguide single-photon source relying on evanescent coupling of the light field from a tapered out-coupler to an optical fiber. A two-step approach is taken where the performance of the tapered out-coupler is recorded first on an independent device containing an on-chip reflector. Reflection measurements establish that the chip-to-fiber coupling efficiency exceeds 80 %. The detailed characterization …
